Individual attention makes

Aaron’s Acres summer camps something special

There is simply nothing like one-on-one connections, human touch and personal interaction. They can lift spirits and change lives.

Those types of interactions are what Aaron’s Acres is built upon, and collectively they are the driving force behind the local nonprofit’s original program, summer camp.

“We accept participants with all disabilities,” said Elaine Burnett, who’s been a program director at Aaron’s Acres for 12 years. “Their needs vary, from hand over hand to behavior assistance to emotional and communicative assistance. With 1-on-1 or 1-on-2 staffing, we’re able to meet those needs. We’re able to meet those participants where they’re at. It helps us meet the child where their need is right now.”

“The traditional summer camp usually has a 1-to-6 or 1-to-8 counselor-to-participant ratio,” Burnett added. “But we’re able to assist and modify concerns right there and now.”

This year’s edition of Aaron’s Acres summer camps will be held over three two-week sessionsJune 16 to 27, July 7 to 18 and

July 21 to Aug. 1 - at New Holland Community Pool and Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland.

The camps are designed for residents of Lancaster, Lebanon, Berks, Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties, ages 5 through 21 with mental, behavioral or emotional disabilities.

Aaron’s Acres offers half-day summer camps from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or full-day summer camps from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some of the camp activities include games; arts and crafts;

swimming; therapeutic music; therapeutic horseback riding; and interactive entertainment like magicians, petting zoos and ventriloquists.

“The goal is to create a traditional summer camp program,” said Burnett. “All participants should have opportunities to enjoy summer camp regardless of their abilities. Everybody should have the opportunity to participate in programs like these. At Aaron’s Acres, we want to provide that for them.”

In 2024, Aaron’s Acres summer camps served 45 participants.

But a shortage of seasonal staff counselors created a waiting list for participants.

“We can only accept as many participants as we have staff for,” said Burnett. “The more staff we have, the more participants we can have. Last year, we didn’t have enough staff members to accommodate all the participants every two weeks. We’d like to accept 60 participants every two weeks. We need to hire more staff.”

At Zion Lutheran, “Daniel” will inspire reminders about faith

We live what we believe. Sometimes our faith needs a recharging, a little boost, a refreshing.

Bible stories like the Sight & Sound production of “Daniel” can provide that kind of reboot.

“Whether we realize it or not, our faith is kind of tested daily,” said Kurt Brown, who’s been an office administrator at Zion Lutheran Church for two years. “Stuff just comes up in our life. We question why, and then a few months later it becomes evident. We all have our lions’ dens; we’re brought into them. We can back out or rely on a higher power and grow from there. But faith is ultimately rewarded.”

Located at 18 Quarry Road, Leola, Zion Lutheran Church will present a video recording of a Sight & Sound Theatres performance of “Daniel” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. The video will be shown on a large screen within the church’s sanctuary.

“It’s similar to many stories of

faith in the Bible,” said Brown. “It’s a testing of faith. Daniel is given the gift of prophecy with dreams and gets thrown into a den of lions.”

“This was a person God entrusted to carry out a particular mission,” Brown added. “He made sure the mission was carried out and that Daniel was protected. There’s a message that if God wants Daniel to do something, He’s going to protect Daniel. Like Daniel, we go through things, we go through trials, and we’ve got to maintain that faith.”

Zion Lutheran evangelism committee member Pat Kohler displays a poster of “Daniel.”

Zion Lutheran’s presentation of “Daniel” is free to attend, and modest free refreshments will be served. The video recording takes just under two hours to view.

“This is about bringing people together,” said Brown. “It’s a couple of hours when kids won’t be on social media. It’s family time. You’re with other people in the community. It’ll be nice to see people.”

The showing of “Daniel” was made possible through the efforts of the church’s evangelism committee, which is headed by Pat Kohler and Keith Shetter. More than 100 individuals, a mixture of church members, local families and other community members, are expected to attend.

“It’s going to be like the feeling of a Saturday matinee,” said Brown. “It’s a good vibe. We might have two or three songs on the organ to make it a little bit of a fun atmosphere.”

Programs to explore petroglyphs

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) will offer a program, “The Mysterious Petroglyphs of Safe Harbor,” on Wednesday, April 23, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata. Adam Zurn, historian, educator, adventurer, and founder of Uncharted Lancaster, will recount his expeditions down the lower Susquehanna River to explore the mysterious 1,000-year-old Native American petroglyphs hidden in the ancient river rocks at Safe Harbor. The program is free and open to the public. The parking lot and entrance are accessible via the alley behind the church. For more information, visit www.cocalicovalleyhs.org or call 717-733-1616.

Last spring, Zion Lutheran Church held a similar presentation of another Sight & Sound Theatres production, “Moses,” as an outreach program.

“It’s community outreach,” said Brown. “We like doing things several times throughout the year to engage the public.”

“Families can certainly take advantage of it,” Brown continued. “For something in spring on the weekend after Easter, it’s probably open for people. (‘Daniel’ is) a great story, a great message. We want to be relevant to the community.”

Zion Lutheran also hosts community outreach events like a water slide day in August and a Christmas craft show in early December. In addition, the church serves a free community meal on the third Friday of every month.

“We gather to grow; we live to serve,” said Brown. “The people here are so nice and welcoming.”

A member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Zion Lutheran Leola was founded in 1858. Currently, the church counts 250 active members among its worshipers.

A supportive environment

BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support. The ministry, which serves bereaved parents and grandparents, holds a number of area support groups, but once a year a special breakfast is held to give participants from around Lancaster County and others in the surrounding area who have experienced the loss of a child a chance to meet in a supportive environment.

The 2025 BASIS Breakfast will be held at Yoder’s Restaurant & Buffet, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The buffet breakfast is free to attend. A freewill offering will be received near the end of the event. Those wishing to attend the breakfast must register by Monday, April 21, at www.hvmi.org/ upcoming-events/basis-breakfast.

This year’s speaker will be Lynn Eib, whose talk is titled “The Truth About Grief.” Eib’s life as an award-winning reporter was interrupted by a cancer diagnosis in 1990 when she was only 36 years old. Her experience with surgery and chemotherapy inspired her to follow God’s call to begin the Cancer Prayer Support Group in 1991. The purpose of the group, now believed to be the country’s oldest faith-based organization of its kind, was to help grievers experience the closeness of the Lord to the brokenhearted. In April of 1996, Eib became a patient advocate for her oncologist,

The Rev. Jonathan Barrett, CVCCS’ executive director, will outline CVCCS’ core philosophy on holistic charity, offer-

ing both practical and spiritual guidance for those seeking to serve others with compassion, dignity, and long-term impact. Rooted in biblical faith, the organization believes true charity fosters transformation through relationships and accountability.

Staff counselors must be 18 or older, and they are not required to have any specialized training.

“We will do all the training,” said Burnett. “Our counselors are generally made up of college students who are looking to go into special education or becoming social workers. This is an amazing hands-on opportunity for college students.”

Aaron’s Acres, which is located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, was founded in 1998 as a summer camp for 11 participants ages 5 through 9 with disabilities. Today, Aaron’s Acres serves 160 individuals ages 5 through 40 with year-round, recreation-based sports, social and community-ser-

vice programs directed by trained, certified staff members.

“It started when a parent came to our executive director (Risa Paskoff) and said, ‘School is over. Now what?’” said Burnett. “So that parent and our executive director started this summer camp. Over the years, we’ve expanded the ages, and we expanded the programs. Then we started a weekend program. Last year, we expanded our programs to include adults.”

ministering to his patients for nearly 10 years. Eib calls herself a “passionate encourager, but always a truth-teller.” Eib is also the author of several books. Her first book, “When God & Cancer Meet,” has been published in three languages and sold more than 100,000 copies. Eib lives near Philadelphia with her husband, Ralph, who is a pastor.

Eib’s book “When God & Grief Meet: True Stories of Comfort & Courage,” published in 2021, was given to Dan Steinman, BASIS director, by a fellow church member following the 2024 breakfast. Steinman quickly recognized how the content reflected the BASIS support group material. “I prayed about it,” recalled Steinman, who noted that the woman who gave him the book recommended Eib as an “excellent speaker.” “I trusted her judgment,” shared Steinman, who scheduled Eib for this year’s banquet.

Each year, a Wall of Remembrance, which was originally a portable photo display featuring pictures of the children who have died, is available at the breakfast. Last year, the photos from the wall were shown on a screen, but this year Steinman hopes the wall will be available to attendees in a digital format.

“We give attendees plenty of time to converse (before and during breakfast),” said Steinman, who noted breakfast is served at 9:30 a.m. and enjoyed until 11 a.m. Eib will speak at 11, and after she speaks, attendees may ask questions.

Steinman noted that BASIS currently holds support groups within Lancaster County in Akron, Mount Joy, Paradise, and Quarryville. The ministry is considering expanding support to include siblings who are grieving, called Kids in Grief. The program may include grief

BASIS also produces quarterly podcasts on a variety of grief-related topics, which can be found at www.hvmi.org/hopeingrief.

Steinman pointed out that the purpose of the ministry is to be there for those experiencing loss of a loved one and that doing that in a variety of ways helps to spread comfort. “We just want to come beside people,” he said. “However we do that is good.”
