Runners complete past Leola Lions Country Run/Walk 5Ks. After a two-year absence, the run will return in May.
Running On! areville, Leola, Leacock Lions Club member Ken McCombs has been helping to organize the Leola Lions Country Run/Walk 5K for a number of years, but the event has not been held since 2019. “We had to cancel (in 2021),” said McCombs, who noted that the 2020 race was also not held. Both events were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Now, the race will be back with a few changes. Originally an evening run held in the fall, the 2022 event, which will be the 20th run, will be held on Saturday, May 14, beginning at the upper pavilion at Leola Community Park and Pool, 23 E. Moving Ahead BY ANN MEAD ASH
“This is the first normal year (my wife, Sofie, and I have been pastoring New Life Church),” said Chris Smucker, who is now pastor of New Life, which meets at 10 a.m. on Sundays in the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. Chris became pastor of the church in January of 2020, but with COVID-19 restrictions interrupting regular life, the pastor is only now feeling a normalcy in the position. New Life is part of Dove International. Dave Dienner had served as pastor for many years prior to the transition to Chris and Sofie. Dave’s wife, Connie, noted that by spring of 2018, the Dienners were looking for a younger couple to take over the ministry. “(The church) was growing, and we felt God saying it was time to pass the baton,” said Connie. “Dave’s favorite verse is ‘One generation shall praise His works to another’ from Psalm 145:4,” she said. “(Dave’s) heart was to raise up the next generation.” Chris, who grew up in Churchtown, first met Dave and Connie more than 20 years ago when they were youth pastors at a church he attended. Chris met Sofie when she came to the U.S. from Belgium around 2000 and both of them attended a ministry training program being held in the Pequea Valley area. At the end of the two-year training session, Chris and Sofie were married, and they went to Cape Town, South Africa, to be part of a ministry there. When they

returned in 2008, they began attending New Life and soon became part of the church leadership team. When Connie, Dave, and the church elders formed a succession team, Chris and Sofie were part of the effort. “We asked if any of the elders felt the call (to be pastor),” said Connie, who noted that Chris and Sofie immediately said, “No,” before coming back to say that they should pray about the decision. “God began to work in their hearts,” said Connie, who noted that the church culture resembles a family. “We really wanted to find a pastor from within,” she said. In April 2019, Chris and Sofie began praying about the offer. “In June 2019, we really felt God was calling us,” said Chris, who noted he initially refused because he felt his life was too busy. “Then I

thought, ‘It’s not about what I think but about what the Lord is calling us to do.’” “It was really a change of heart,” added Sofie. With the onset of COVID-19 restrictions, the church did not meet regularly. “Now that we are through that, we feel this is a time to set up for growth and start establishing for the future,” said Chris. “Our vision is to become more extroverted toward the community,” said Sofie. “To create a culture of reaching out.” Chris agreed, saying, “Our goal is to connect people to Jesus and see them experience His power in their lives.” Every third Sunday, the church meets in homes for the purpose of cultivating family relationships in smaller groups. Monica Williams (top photo) and Brenda Coble helped create chocolate-dipped pretzel sticks as part of a celebration of World Down Syndrome Day at Gigi’s Playhouse.

The melted chocolate was colored bright blue and yellow, which are the Down syndrome colors. Christine Hewitt, site coordinator with the Lancaster Gigi’s, explained that the pretzels would be delivered to the Manheim Township Police station later in the day. “A couple of us are about to leave and go hand out some gift cards and put money at vending machines as a few random acts of kindness,” said Hewitt, who was gathering adult participants to join her. According to Hewitt, Gigi’s offers nine different monthly programs, which add up to about 35 hours of programming a week. “This morning we had GiGiFIT Toddlers here,” said Hewitt, who added that 1:1 literacy tutoring is also offered throughout the week. About 200 area families take part in Gigi’s programming. The Playhouse opened in Lancaster in January of 2020, and it is one of more than 50 locations across the U.S. and Mexico. On World Down Syndrome Day, Gigi’s encouraged participants with Down syndrome and their families

to wear mismatched socks to celebrate. World Down Syndrome Day is held on the 21st day of the third month because individuals with Down syndrome have three copies of their 21st chromosome. Because the chromosomes resemble socks, wearing mismatched socks is a way to spread awareness and acceptance of Down Syndrome. “Everything we offer is designed to work in the ways that people with Down syndrome learn best,” explained Hewitt. “But everybody is welcome,” she added, noting that siblings of Gigi’s participants often come to the venue. “We have others with special needs participate in our programs (as well),” she said. Hewitt oversees programs at the Playhouse on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and works in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “This job is the best, and I am thankful to have it,” said Hewitt. Landis Valley Posts Programs, Seed Sale tion focuses on the use of color in objects created or used by Pennsylvania Germans in the 19th and 20th centuries. Although form and need always came first, a splash of color on a saddle, textile, or Conestoga wagon expressed the Pennsylvania Germans’ culture and brought something bright and pleasant into their lives. Most pieces on display are part of Landis Valley’s collection. The items include painted furniture, textiles, clothing, fraktur, and ceramics, and they highlight designs and colors form both the Old World and the New World. There is an admission fee. Landis Valley recently added new content to its YouTube channel, including recordings of most of its virtual lectures from the past year. This content can be accessed for free at www.youtube.com/c/LandisValley VillageFarmMuseum/videos. Landis Valley has released its Heir-
loom Seed Catalog, and community members may purchase seeds for their spring and summer garden. To view the catalog and purchase seeds, visit www.landisvalleymuseum.org/explore /heirloom-seed-project.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, has posted several programs and announcements. A new program about William Chester Ruth will take place on Saturday, May 21, at 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. In this two-hour, first-person interpretive tour, attendees will meet local inventor Ruth as portrayed by actor Keith Henley. Attendees will learn about the inventor’s upbringing as the son of a former slave and a free woman of color and how he helped to solve the problems of local farmers by inventing technology that is still used in farm equipment today. The museum preserves numerous machines of Ruth’s invention in its collection. Space is limited, and reservations are required. The fee will be discounted for children ages 3 to 10. To register, visit https://landis-valley-village-farm -museum.square.site/. Groups rates are available; call 717-569-0401, ext. 276, for more details.
