Katie Sina, who serves as choreographer for the production, said that basic costumes with accent pieces will designate different characters. “Another way we are making it fun is by adding pop culture anachronisms (to the timeless tales),” noted cast member Josiah Esch. Masciale-Walmer shared that the biggest challenge is the uncertainty that has surrounded COVID-19 cases and resulting restrictions, but she noted that students are facing the situation with a flexible attitude. “If something happens, we will try to make a way around it,” she said. “But we are putting a ton of hard work in, and if it doesn’t happen, we have to (be prepared) deal with it.” While there is no cost to attend one of the shows, tickets are required. There will be opportunities to donate to the Lancaster Mennonite drama group. To enhance the cultural experience, traditional songs and dances from around the world will be presented between the skits. Cast member Isaac Kraenbring reported that some students will be playing as many as six different characters, since each folktale is its own complete story. He described his part in one tale, noting that Sauder has encouraged students to develop each character they play as a distinct entity. “In the Irish folktale, I am the Great Bear of Orange,” he said, adding that the story is similar to that of “Beauty and the Beast.” “(Instead of objects), the people are transformed to animals, but when a princess loves the bear, he becomes a prince,” explained Kraenbring. Cast member Megan Esch said she enjoys the challenge of playing different characters. “Each skit has a different atmosphere,” she explained, adding that the first one will have a cartoonish feel. Student Sofia Masciale-Walmer noted that among the songs would be those originating in West Africa,

Customer Appreciation Friday, April 30th (1pm-6pm) Saturday, May 1st (10am-3pm)

Volunteers collect and pack food items at Blessings of Hope, a wholesale food bank in Leola.

Although Fisher thought he would only be gone a few days, over the next two weeks, 12 tractor-trailer loads of food boxes containing fruit, vegetables, milk, yogurt, and other food items, along with skids of water, traveled from Leola to Texas. Fisher remained in the Lone Star State to oversee distribution. “Food and water was what they needed,” recalled Fisher, who added that trailers went to Houston and Austin as well. “They had no electric or water, so water was in high demand.” Outreaches like shipping 294,600 pounds of food to Texas are made possible by fundraisers like the iCare event BOH has planned for Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. The outdoor event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 28 and at 6:30 a.m. on May 29. The May 28 fundraiser, which will be designed to appeal to members of the Plain community, will include an a capella concert, a banquet, and guest speaker Daniel Beiler, who spent two years in Iraq working with refugees and local government officials. To become an iCare sponsor or purchase tickets, which are necessary

to attend the May 28 event, email admin@blessingsofhope.com or call 717-824-1227. Organizers described the May 29 event as a cross between a fair and a mud sale. Both 5K and 10K runs will be held beginning at 8 a.m., and a volleyball tournament will take place during the day. More information on registering for these competitions may be found at www.blessingsofhope.com. Four different auctions will take place during the day, and food items will be available for purchase for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a drive-through food option. In the evening, a by-donation concert will be held. Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.

Bike Ride from pg 1 nonriders are invited to donate bikes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. More information about the organization may be found at www.thecommonwheel.com. This year, a Shred Event Fundraiser will be held in the park from 9 to 11 a.m. in conjunction with the ride. Bareuther said that this is an opportunity for community members to clean out their basements and file cabinets and make a donation to the club at the same time. Club president Bill Weik noted that shredding by Marco Technologies will happen on site and that 100% of the donation will go to the club. Beginning in 2019, the club offered a more inclusive sponsorship package for local businesses and individuals involving both the club’s Literacy Ride and the car show that members hold in the Neffsville Park each September. Through fundraisers, the club supports a number of local organizations. Weik noted that recent contributions have included scholarships for Manheim Township students, grants to United Disability Services, and funding for the Lancaster Early Education Center playground area. Those who would like to register to take part in the bicycle ride may do so by searching for “Rotary Ride for the Community 2021” at www.active.com. Questions may be directed to Bareuther at sbareuther@msn.com. Sunrise Rotary welcomes new members. This year’s Ride for the Community will be held at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, May 8, with rolling starts beginning at 7 a.m. Riders must register and checkin between 7 and 9 a.m. The event will follow Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 guidelines, and it will be held rain or shine. Formerly called the Literacy Ride, the event was renamed to better reflect the many community organizations that benefit. The ride is designed to appeal to bicycle enthusiasts at a variety of riding levels, so the club offers four routes - a 10mile family ride; a 21-mile ride through scenic countryside; a 43mile ride showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges; and a metric century ride of 100 kilometers, equivalent to approximately 62 miles. Metric century riders must depart by 8 a.m. On this course, an optional hill stage called the Cat’s Back challenge will be offered near Fairmount in Ephrata. Ride participants will find water and rest stops located along each of the marked routes. Cue sheets, SAG support, sports beverages, snacks, lunch, and comfort stations will also be provided to registered riders. Since 2018, the Rotary Club has partnered with The Common Wheel, an organization that works to encourage a culture of biking for transportation as well as recreation. The park became a drop-off location, with club members accepting quality, gently used bikes throughout the ride. This year, the partnership will continue, and riders and

Girls’ Lacrosse Scores 99 Goals in First 7 Games ited with six saves. Despite the setback, CV continues to rack up the triumphs having netted a staggering 99 goals against their opponents over the first seven contests, while allowing just 42. Twelve different Lady Bucks have contributed to that goal count, with senior Morley leading the charge with 49 goals and nine assists. “Abby Morley only knows how to give 110 percent on the field,” noted head coach Matthew Brubaker of the co-captain. “Her on-field ability and effort are unmatched, and her younger teammates see where hard work and dedication can take them. She encourages her teammates to

take the next step(s) in their development as lacrosse players.” While Morley is setting the offensive pace, she is certainly not the only success story on the team, and in a recent 17-1 win over Muhlenberg, showed just how diversified their attack can be, with goals supplied by 11 different Buckskins. Jessica Chen led the April 10th attack with three goals. Ellie Livingston, Annika Bredeman, Sophia Hess, and Danae Ulrich each added a pair, and Morley, Bella Silvaggio, Olivia Hess, Amanda Yingling, Cassandra Malles, and Bailey Post-Raeburn chipped in with one apiece. In a Friday night showdown against Garden Spot, CV prevailed 18-5 in which Morley notched nine goals, Livingston netted five, Silvaggio two, and one each from Yingling and Bredeman. With steadfast protection of the CV goal, Handwerger has earned a collection of 47 saves this season, with assistance from a tight defensive unit anchored by senior Olivia Hess. “Olivia is the leader of our defensive unit,” credited Brubaker while describing an otherwise young and talented

lineup of defenders. “The seniors learn to trust the underclassmen a little more each day. She can play any position and Jessica Chen added one. Buckskin makes great decision no matter what keeper Jamie Handwerger was credrole she’s playing,” the coach noted of the senior and co-captain. And while things look bright for the current season, there is plenty of potential for subsequent seasons as well, as evidenced in the likes of sophomore Caroline Kulp, playing in her first year of varsity lacrosse and already contributing in big ways. “Caroline is a starting defender and she’s only at a fraction her potential. She brings an understanding of strategy, positioning, and movement that is impossible to teach,” praised Brubaker. Weitzel also pitched three and two-thirds innings, scattering eight hits, eight runs, and three strikeouts. Two days prior, the club celebrated their first win of the season with a 17-0 shutout at Lebanon. Rhiannon Henry picked up the win from the circle, allowing zero runs and only one hit while striking out eight of the 11 batters she faced. Leading the charge at the plate was Olivia Mellinger’s two-for-two performance that included three RBIs. Becca Hartranft also had three RBIs. TENNIS Doubles play was a Buckskin strength in last Wednesday’s 4-3 loss at Lampeter-Strasburg. Yuji Wenger and Henry McQuate Krahnke earned a point with their 9-8 victory. Nolan High and Luke Taylor gained another point with their win by the same score. Wenger garnered the lone singles win with a 7-5, 7-6 triumph at No. 1. On Monday, the squad blanked Warwick 5-0, with wins coming from Wenger, High, and Taylor in singles action.
