A Feeling Of Fulfillment PA MEDI Seeks Volunteers

“After you have been through struggling to understand Medicare yourself, and you’re helping other people to understand … when they say, ‘This is the most anyone has ever done to explain this,’ it makes your day,” said Kim Skinner, volunteer coordinator with Lancaster County Office of Aging. Skinner is hoping to help more Lancaster County residents get that feeling of satisfaction that comes from helping others answer their Medicare questions. Volunteer Medicare counselors are needed for PA MEDI, a program run out of the Office of Aging at 150 N. Queen St., Lancaster. PA MEDI volunteers donate at least four hours weekly in private face-to-face sessions. Counselors answer questions about Medicare eligibility and enrollment, Parts A and B and Medigap benefits, Part D prescription drug plans, PACE and other financial assistance

programs, Medicare Advantage Plans, and more. Skinner noted that volunteers will complete a training course of 10 online modules with testing. “Then there’s another online training (program) with the regional coordinator,” Skinner added. She noted that people who enjoy reading make good volunteers. “There’s a lot to know in Medicare,” she stated, adding that many retired people volunteer for PA MEDI. Computer literacy is a must, according to Skinner, who said that counselors come from all walks of life and that former teachers, nurses, and lawyers are currently volunteering. “These are people who have worked and want to continue doing something that utilizes their brainpower,” she said. “Often people who have retired need to have purpose.” Skinner said she would like to see more men join the volunteer force. Award-Winning Website Spreads Message For SWAN

Sandra Leonard, who formerly lived in New Hanover Township and Bedford County, is a Fairmount resident who is especially interested in genealogy. So interested, in fact, that the former librarian has written two books - “From Sea to Shining Sea,” about her own family history, and “From Bavaria to Brady,” about relatives of her husband, Keith. While researching her own family history, Sandra discovered important information about a Bedford

When the SWAN website created by the team at YDOP - a digital marketing firm located in Lancaster - received a Gold award from the Horizon Interactive Awards, YDOP CEO Steve Wolgemuth was pleased. “It’s a real honor to receive that and be recognized for the good work,” said Wolgemuth. County woman, who came to be known as Indian Eve after being kidnapped by Native Americans. Sandra shared Eve’s story in a multimedia presentation to other Fairmount residents on Feb. 17. Sandra began her presentation by recalling her first day in seventh grade in 1955. Raised on a dairy farm in Bedford County, Sandra was excited to learn that she would be learning about Bedford County history that fall. Another girl in the class shared a story about Indian Eve, who was the girl’s great-grandmother several generations back. See Fairmount pg 2

where she found her eldest son with his wife and children. She was soon reunited with her other children. A year later, she married Conrad Sammel, the father of her eldest son’s wife. She died in 1815, and her tombstone at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dutch Corner tells her story. Eve’s daughter Mary was taken in by a family named Imler following the Native American raid, and the girl came to be called Mary Imler. This led to confusion about Eve’s maiden name, but Sandra’s research uncovered her true origins. In closing, Sandra read 1 Corinthians 13, known as the “love” chapter, and compared Eve’s love for her children to the verses. “When I think of Eve’s life and all she endured, I think of this chapter,” noted Sandra. “Her life was showing that much love for her children by enduring all those things. That was Eve, and I am so honored to be carrying her DNA in my body.” Fairmount is a nonprofit retirement community located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. Sandra forgot about the story until 2007 when she purchased a book about Indian Eve and her descendants. While studying the genealogy section, Sandra realized she too was descended from Indian Eve. “She was my great-grandmother eight generations back,” explained Sandra. Sandra went on to tell the tale of Eve’s life, including her birth as Eva Catherina Hellebart in 1740 near Philadelphia. “Her father’s name was George Adam Hellebart, and he had a large farm in New Hanover Township,” explained Sandra. Eve married Adam Ernst in 1757. The pair had several children and eventually settled on their own farm in Bedford County, where Adam was a weaver. In September 1777, Eve’s homestead was attacked by Shawnee Native Americans, and her husband and two neighbors were killed. Four of Eve’s children escaped, and she and her two youngest boys were captured and made to walk to Fort Detroit, which was held by the British. Eve was detained there until 1776. She and her two boys then traveled back to Bedford County on foot, arriving eventually at their homestead,

LeeP Productions will present “Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns & Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” at locations across central Pennsylvania and beyond throughout 2022. “Then Sings My Soul” is an original musical presentation featuring professional vocalists as well as accompanists from the Lancaster area. Highlighting important moments in the Rev. Billy Graham’s ministry, it includes a look at the history behind over 30 well-known hymns and songs of faith, many of which were made famous by or were written by people who accepted Jesus at Graham’s Crusades. Selections include “How Great Thou Art,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” and “Amazing Grace.” The production also includes an old-fashioned hymn sing. “Then Sings My Soul” features Lancaster locals Daniel Gorham, Sarah Poague, Kat Prickett, and Ric Zimmerman. Katrina King, an 18year-old New Holland-area resident, is the pianist. Now in its fourth year of touring, “Then Sings My Soul” premiered in August 2018 in a barn at writer and

Current volunteers JoAnn Irwin and Janet Foster both noted that their former careers aid them in their work with PA MEDI. Irwin, who worked in IT, said that the training and teaching she did when she explained a complex computer system to people has prepared her. “Medicare has a lot of crazy rules, and it’s intimidating for people, but my job is to break it down and make it understandable,” she said, adding that she loves the challenge of the work. Foster, who worked for an orthopedic surgeon, said that knowing the provider’s side of Medicare helps her help others. She also enjoys the sense of accomplishment. “It’s satisfying because you have people who just appreciate what you do,” she said. “You help

them as best you can, and you see the stress lift.” Skinner noted that the counselors offer a unique perspective to those they help. “We provide objective answers and comparisons of different insurance plans. We never point them in a direction.” The free counseling service has been available for more than 30 years. “(Sites) were established as State Health Insurance Assistance Program - SHIP,” said Skinner, who added that more than 50 SHIPs were offered across the state. She noted that nearly 760 people were served by the PA MEDI program in 2021. Readers who would like to volunteer may email kskinner@co.lancaster .pa.us or call 717-299-7979.

But Wolgemuth was more excited about what the website can do for SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), which offers free music lessons to School District of Lancaster students affected by parental incarceration. “Any visibility we can bring to that organization … to make people aware of these children is a very positive thing for us,” said Wolgemuth. Wolgemuth was first introduced to SWAN by a business coach. “When I heard (SWAN’s) story, I felt a calling to help,” recalled Wolgemuth, who noted that he was spurred to action by hearing that at that time 4,000 school-age children within a short distance of downtown Lancaster were impacted by parental incarceration. “When I learned about the trauma associated with that for children and the negative impact that trauma can have, that raised my level of passion,” he said. Wolgemuth also learned of the positive impact SWAN’s program of music lessons and mentorship can have. He joined the board and got involved.

Wolgemuth was excited to see SWAN grow from offering only private instruction to group lessons, which involved choruses, rhythm bands, and ukuleles. “That enabled (SWAN) to reach and connect with many more children,” said Wolgemuth, who noted that COVID-19 restrictions set the program back, but not for long. “We kept pressing forward, and (SWAN is) ready to open up a new day and get back to where we were,” he said. In 2021, YDOP’s team sought a project that would help it continue to contribute to the Lancaster community that team members care about. “We looked at (SWAN’s) marketing and web presence, and we thought, ‘This is something we know how to do,’” reported Wolgemuth. “That’s how the website rebuild came along.” The site was rebuilt for SWAN by YDOP at no charge. SWAN posted a blog about the effort that read “YDOP’s marketing team excelled at building SWAN’s new site. They created a fresh look that is in perfect harmony with the quality content.”

The award-winning website YDOP created for SWAN

Wolgemuth noted that the awardwinning work was jumpstarted by the importance of helping those who cannot help themselves. “(You are inspired) when you discover a sector of the population that is so under the radar and you realize if you don’t help, no one else is waiting in line to do it,” he said. “(These children) didn’t do anything to bring this into their lives, and if we can’t help this group of children in trauma, what kind of people are we? That attracted my team to get involved and really care.”

TRACK The track and field teams made the trek across Lancaster County to Millersville on April 19th with the Lady Buckskins returning home a 93-53 winner over Penn Manor for their first win of the season. The boy’s side suffered a near miss, falling 80-70, putting both squads at 1-2. The Lady ‘Skins did their heavy lifting on the track where they claimed all but one event. Three of those wins came in the relays with Seana Dougherty, Kylee Antrim, Samantha Herr and Kylynn Frankford taking the 3200m relay. Mae Lindor, Alondra Ortiz-Montijo, Isabella Johnson and Hallie Schnapf took the 400m relay and Grace Lapp, Jazlyn Cintron, Brooke Denlinger and Frankford claimed the 1600m relay. Johnson added wins in the 100m and 200m while Denlinger picked up the final sprint win by taking the 400m. Jessica Koenig (100H) and Lapp (300H) combined to sweep the hurdles with Frankford (800m) and Dougherty (3200m) finishing the winning on the track. CV added two wins in the field, one each by Cintron (high jump) and Christiana Uzoije (discus). The boy’s side totaled seven wins with just one coming via relay. Carson Miller, Joey Castronova, Andrew Hoffner and

Emmanuel Gitonga handled that win with a 3:38.87 in the 1600m relay. Castronova added a solo win in the 400m while Ben Eberly (110H) and Zachary Phy (300H) combined to sweep the hurdles. CV’s remaining three victories came in the field with Zach Stoudt (long jump), Thabo Lautsbaugh (triple jump) and Jordan Sensenig (high jump) handling those wins. GIRLS’ LACROSSE With roughly half of the regular season in the books, the Lady Buckskins are sitting at 1-7 on the season after losses to Eastern York and Cocalico. The Lady Golden Knights came to Witmer on April 13th and handed the home team a 12-8 setback. Jamie Handwerger kept things close with 16 saves but it was not enough to overcome a 7-4 halftime hole. Jordyn Hironimus paced the offense with four goals while Annika Bredeman added three goals and one assist. Cassandra Malles picked up the final score. One day later a trip to Denver resulted in a 17-3 loss to Cocalico. Malles picked up one more score with Caroline Kulp accounting for the remaining two goals. Handwerger finished with nine saves. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team has just two losses on the season, both coming opposite undefeated Lampeter-Strasburg. The second of those losses came on April 13th with L-S posting a 18-5 final for the win. Ben Nolt finished with 15

saves while four Buckskins divided the scoring. Keller Dillman led that quartet with two goals while Hunter Silvaggio, Noah Harrison and Noah Nolt split the remaining three. As with the first loss to L-S, Conestoga Valley was able to bounce back with a win, this time via a 17-5 final over Ephrata on the 19th. Dillman and Jeff Fisher paced the offense with matching five goal and four assist games. Isaiah Sensenig (3g), Tyson Zwaska (2g) and Silvaggio (2g) cleaned up the remaining goals. CV went with a trio of keepers with both Nolt and Jay Stauffer tallying three saves. Zack Bolton added two of his own. BASEBALL The baseball team tripled their loss total over the last week, falling to Warwick and Ephrata by a combined 26-4. The April 13th tilt opposite Warwick went only five innings with the Warriors posting a 10-0 victory. Connor Esbenshade and Kayden Fisher split pitching duties and combined for three strikeouts and five walks and those 10 Warriors runs but just three of them were earned runs as CV committed four errors. Esbenshade’s two singles Photo by Bob Diller and Preston FishBuckskin third baseman Alexa Freeburn er’s lone single turns to put the tag on the Hempfield run- accounted for the ner in Conestoga Valley’s 3-2, sectioncrossover loss to the host Black Knights on Buckskin offense. dropped another five-inning affair, this one by a 16-4 final to Ephrata. Sam Thompson took the brunt of the damage but just four of the 14 runs scored during his time were earned as another six errors doomed CV. Preston Fisher covered the final out in relief. Thompson used a RBI single in the first to help his own cause but single RBIs from Evan Wilson, Owen Fisher and Evan Lapp were not enough to overcome the Mountaineers. BOYS’ TENNIS The boy’s tennis team continues their back-and-forth season, picking up a win over Lebanon that was offset by losses to Cocalico and Manheim Township. CV just missed pulling out the win over Cocalico on April 14th, falling by a 4-3 final. Jason Schlegelmilch and Henry McQuate-Krahnke picked up singles wins while Grady Ray and Ivan Shrom accounted for the lone doubles victory. The Buckskins were not able to keep their April 19th match with Township as close, with the Blue Streaks posting a 5-0 win. Conestoga Valley did post a 7-0 win over Lebanon on the 13th. Schlegelmilch and McQuate-Krahnke were two of the singles winners with McQuate-Krahnke joining Yuji Wenger and Schlegelmilch teaming with Nolan Miller to pick up two doubles wins. Miller and Wenger also claimed their solo matches while Ray and Shrom accounted for the final win at number three doubles.

Rachel Metzinger has been named principal at Gerald G. Huesken Middle School. Her appointment was made official at the March 21 Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) school board meeting. Also at the meeting, the school board approved the hire of Kathleen Hernandez as the next principal of Smoketown Elementary. Metzinger will replace Denis Quirk, who accepted a position as assistant superintendent with Tulpehocken School District. Metzinger will begin her new role on June 6; Quirk’s final day with the district will be June 3. Metzinger has been an employee with the CVSD since August 2009, having held various positions over that time. She has served as the assistant principal at Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) since July 2019. In that role, she established district-wide Student Assistance Program (SAP) procedures and served as the high school’s SAP coordinator. Metzinger also served as the district attendance coordinator and facilitated alternatives to suspension and restorative prac-

tices at the high school level, including the implementation of a de-escalation center. In addition, she supervised and developed a secondary RtII center and implemented the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) model. Metzinger also served as a co-chair administrator for curriculum. Metzinger graduated from Lock Haven University with a Bachelor of Science in special education. She earned her Master of Science in reading from Gwynedd Mercy College and, in the fall of 2021, earned her doctorate in educational leadership and professional practice from Trevecca Nazarene University. Metzinger also holds a Special Educator Supervisor Certification and a Principalship and Administration Certification, both from Penn State University. Metzinger will serve as the first principal of the newly constructed middle school, which will open for the 2022-23 school year and house students in grades six to eight, a shift from the current seventh- and eighthgrade configuration. Hernandez served as George Washington’s assistant principal from 2014 to 2016 and was an elementary teacher in the School District of Lancaster from 2006 to 2014. A Flag-in Day will take place at the Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, and will continue on Sunday, May 1, if needed. The event will honor over 1,200 veterans buried in the Lancaster Cemetery. Volunteers are needed to help at the event. Volunteers will place flags at each veterans grave, place over 500 new grave markers, and reposition older markers to meet cemetery standards for placement. Volunteers will be asked to take photographs of the stone, marker, and flag once placed and to share these digitally with the cemetery. The purpose of this effort is to honor each U.S. veteran interred at the cementary, provide photographic records for families and for future repair projects, and to record exact lot mapping for future Flag-in Flag-out days. All participants will be asked to read and sign a release the day of the event. Volunteers should consider bringing the following items to the event: a clipboard and pen or pencil, sturdy shoes, a camera with an SD card or a cell phone with a camera and Google or Amazon Prime access to share photos, snacks or a lunch and beverages, and a wagon or cart to move and carry markers. For more information, contact Maurene Leary at 717-885-6312 or maurenec@comcast.net. The event is being hosted by Red Rose Blue Star Moms PA202; the Donegal-Witness Tree Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; and the George Ross Society, Children of the American Revolution.
