Friendship Fest Returns BY ANN MEAD ASH

“We will have different things this year, along with things folks are used to as well,” said Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community. “We decided this year’s theme is ‘Same Run. Different Fun.’” The run Link spoke of is the annual 5K that has been part of the annual Friendship Fest and 5K since 2017. In 2020, the 5K alone was held in September, but this

year, the 5K and the Fest will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 8, beginning at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Registration for the 5K is open at www.friendshipcommunity .net. Registration will also be available on site on the day of the event. Free T-shirts will be given to participants while supplies last. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a plant tent will offer a variety of spring flowers, perennials, and hanging baskets for sale. Both cash and a limited-contact card payment option will be available. Link reported that local greenhouses have partnered with Friendship to donate items for sale. In a second tent, also open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friendship Heart Gallery will offer some artwork for sale, including items from the Primitives by Cathy

Still Standing: Township House Has Defied The Odds BY ANN MEAD ASH

On Feb. 3, Benton Webber shared several photos and newspaper articles on the Uncharted Lancaster group on Facebook. The photos showed a beautiful building, originally a farmhouse, located at 2201 Oregon Pike in Manheim Township. Landis House has been a fixture in Lancaster County for nearly 200 years, and its history has included occupants ranging from farm children to insurance executives. See Still Standing pg 3

14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services BY COURTNEY MENGEL

In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen

years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for

women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing.

Among these will be water bottles and blocks that sit on shelves and bear the work of a Friendship artist and sometimes inspirational messages. “(Primitives by Cathy) takes Friendship artwork and puts it on home décor pieces,” said Link, who noted that coasters and notebooks will be among the pieces for sale. “It’s not just a gift; it’s a gift with purpose and meaning,” said Link, who noted that a portion of the sale will go back to the gallery. She said both the plants and the artwork make great Mother’s Day gifts. Link said that she hopes some individuals who are served by Friendship Community will be at the Fest. “Doran has been at previous Fests,” she said. Doran, who is legally blind, is known for the woven potholders he sells by donation. “It’s a craft he loves to do, and he donates proceeds back to Friendship,” said Link, who added that the potholders can be used as hotpads and coasters, and that each is colorful and distinctive. “It’s art and function (together),” she noted.

Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy Scheduled BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drive-through chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is

right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website. The public is also invited to participate in an online auction that will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wishconvoy.org. “We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.” People are invited to cheer the convoy along the route, which can be found at https://tinyurl .com/u8ddcvrw. “There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.”

The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will run through Manheim and Mount Joy on Sunday, May 9. Each star on the Wish Angel trailer represents a Wish child in the area who has passed away in the 32 years of the event.

The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel a connection.” This is the second time the event will begin at the Manheim Auto Auction. Last year’s event was a scaleddown convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with lifethreatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wishconvoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.”

“It was originally built by Hans Snavely or Snabley,” said Webber, who noted that spelling tends to be less fixed as one delves back into the history of a building. “It came into the Landis family by marriage.” A date stone indicates the original house was constructed in 1728, which Webber pointed out is the same year that Lancaster County was formed. “At some point there was either a fire or the house had to be expanded,” said Webber, noting that the house was rebuilt in the 1880s. How much of the present house is original is not clear. Webber’s Facebook post included a number of photos and news articles that traced the history of the building. A circa 1899 photo shows several members of the Landis family in the front yard of the home. A 1930 photo provided by Lewis Bechtold shows two children and a dog in the same location. After the building served as a family home for several generations, one of the Landis family members turned the domicile into a family restaurant. “I found some newspaper articles about it, and it looked very charming,” said Webber of the family restaurant that closed by 1978. Haley Breslin, a student at the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy in Lancaster, has been chosen to participate in the Kiev Grand Prix Festival, a ballet competition in Ukraine. This competition has a longstanding reputation of including some of the world’s most talented ballerinas. Breslin is a junior at the Commonwealth Charter Academy. She will join other students from the United States in the competition, but she is the only student from Pennsylvania who will participate. Haley has been working toward this goal since September of last year. She dances six days a week and fits in extra lessons between school and her regular dance schedule. This will be the second time that Viktor Yeliohin, the ballet master of the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, will participate in the event, as he has been selected as one of the event’s many judges. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the competition will be an entirely virtual event. Breslin will participate in three categories: a classical variation, a contemporary piece, and improvisation, which is a new category this year. She has already submitted her videos to the committee, and they will be judged at the beginning of May.

“Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth.

Chicken may be purchased by car or as a walk-up. There will be no seating area. Link said organizers are looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the community in a new way. “It will be a fun day at Friendship Community. Not so many months ago, Tim Rogers, pastor of Grace Point Church in Paradise, was struggling with a frustration. “I felt like there was a cumulative effect of what I was seeing politically and relative to COVID-19,” he said. “I was feeling that Christians are supposed to be people of truth, (but) if Christians can’t discern truth in what they’re reading and what they’re sharing on social media and the theories they engage or propagate, how can anyone take them seriously when (they are) trying to present Jesus as a truth?” Rogers’ frustration grew into a proposal for a Sunday school series and then into a preview session for a limited audience. Now, Rogers, with help from Scott Feather, pastor of Gateway Church, Parkesburg, will present “True or False - Truth, Deception, Conspiracies, and Why It All Matters” for Christians and nonChristians at the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Saturday, May 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be a nominal fee to attend, and lunch will be included. Rogers has put a great deal of time and effort into researching his subject. As part of his research, he

War Memorial To Host First May Market BY ANN MEAD ASH

Last fall, a few creative friends were talking. They had all taken part in fall vendor events, and they wondered about holding a spring show. “We’re going to have fun,” said Barb Dagen, one of the organizers of the first May Market. Dagen added that the timing of the event just prior to Mother’s Day will provide opportunities to purchase reasonably priced gifts mothers will appreciate. May Market - 2021 will be held at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, on Saturday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The May Market will feature about a dozen vendors specializing in vintage, natural, and artistic items. Among the many items that vendors

will offer for purchase will be baked goods; plants, including succulents; wreaths and other natural arrangements; lavender products; herbal and skin care items; and candles. Items such as handbags, garden aprons, painted slates, and dryer balls will also be offered for sale. Food items that hungry shoppers may purchase will include breakfast foods and coffee, along with hot dogs and hamburgers at lunch time. The event will raise funds for ULTWMA, a nonprofit, volunteer organization that organizes and hosts community events that honor the military service of all local residents. Readers who would like to learn more about the organization may search for “Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association” on Facebook.
