Unleashing The Power Of Music Fairmount Brings Concert To Residents By Ann Mead Ash
On March 19, Mitchell Hanna, director of marketing, and other members of the Fairmount team were brainstorming ways to make life at the retirement community easier for residents who were affected by COVID-19 restrictions. “We had been talking about what we could do to meet emotional, spiritual, and social wellness (needs) of our residents,” said Hanna. “ We had our chaplain doing small group sessions inside, but we were feeling bad about all the activities and group events (that had been canceled).” Cedric Steiner, who had been shadowing team members at Fairmount in order to complete his training in See Power Of Music pg 8

On April 18, the Lafayette Volunteer Fire Company of East Lampeter Township held a Porch Parade. The parade, which included fire engines and trucks with lights and sirens winding through the community streets of Lafayette Fire Company’s primary area of coverage, began at 9 a.m. and concluded at 3 p.m.

Lafayette Fire Company volunteers invited area residents who were staying safe at home to come outside to celebrate the community, wave a flag, share a sign they had made, or simply share their smiles from the porch, front stoop, or yard. The annual GOTR spring 5K, which is normally held at Franklin & Marshall College in mid-May, will be a virtual event this year. “We are calling it the Virtual GOTR 5K Your Way presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster,â€? said West, who added that the 5K will be available to complete from Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, and will include various options in addition to running and walking. “We have a bingo card sheet of activities,â€? explained West. “If (a participant) wants to run the 5K distance over those three days, they can, (but) if they can’t or don’t want to, they can do the different activities on the bingo sheet.â€? This year’s 5K will be free for those who sign up, but donations will be accepted. “We will email a 5K bib (to those who register) that can be printed out and colored and made their own to wear while doing the activities,â€? said West. Interested individuals may register at www.gotrlan caster.org/5k-detail. #GOTRGotYourBack is an effort that GOTR has undertaken to engage the broader community during this time. “It’s our social media piece, which is all about planting positive messages in the homes of anyone who follows us,â€? said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “There are challenges (to complete) ‌ and encouraging words. It’s all about bringing our mission to life.â€? Johnson noted that the organization feels it is especially important to spread a message of kindness. “Just as our 5K is like opening a bottle of sunshine, that’s what we want to be able to do during this time,â€? said Johnson.

GOTR this spring have not been living in normal circumstances. Since they are not attending school due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are not able to meet with their coaches and teams regularly after school. GOTR has responded to this situation with two new virtual lessons released each Tuesday as part of the GOTR At Home curriculum. The first lesson, which was released the week of March 16, is called “We Are Unique; We Are Similar. The lessons can be completed by a girl alone, but they are designed for all household members. “This is a family, at-home, shared experience, said GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. “We want to lift up the community and bring everyone together to share in the GOTR experience. Each lesson includes a main concept called a big idea and an explanation of why that idea matters. Games and discussion questions based on ways to explore the theme are included, along with physical activities. “What we have are called Movement Mixes, explained West, who said that suggestions might include skipping, running in place, or doing star jumps for a certain amount of time. “Not everybody can get outside (to exercise), West explained. “(The lessons) are encouraging whatever activity you can do at home. West said that the lessons are sent via email and text to all the families and coaches each week. “We encourage the coaches to reach out to the families and see how the girls are enjoying the lessons and keep them involved in whatever capacity they can, said West, who noted that she realizes many of the coaches, who are often teachers or parents of the girls who take part,

Gardening from pg 1 and it just might produce a harvest that is both valuable and delicious. “Planting vegetables can be fun and rewarding for the whole family,” pointed out Dan Funk, owner of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses in Washington Boro. “Some spring vegetables such as lettuce, radishes, and spinach can be planted in April and harvested in May. You can follow up with a second planting in the same soil with another crop such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants that will be ready to enjoy later in July,” Funk elaborated. Isolation and stress can be countered by an intentional effort to focus on something positive, and many have found such value in horticulture. “Flowers around the house can brighten your spirit after being inside during this time,” added Funk, suggesting that some area residents may like to try their hand at ornamental plants. For those who wish to add a pop of floral color outdoors but may not have ample yard space, window boxes are one way to dress up a home’s exterior. If produce is the goal, Funk advised picking a location with ample sunlight. “Too much shade and you will just get plant growth without getting any edible product,” Funk advised. For those who are new to gardening, just getting started can be an intimidating endeavor. Or perhaps space is at a premium, causing some to give up before they even begin. However, area experts can provide valuable
12th Annual Lancaster County Community Auction Cancelled for May 19, 2020 Benefiting Hershey Ronald McDonald House® It is with a heavy heart that we share due to the most recent CDC recommendations on group gatherings, we are canceling Lancaster County Community Auction originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at White Horse Fire Company.
Raised bed gardens, such as these, shown in early stages of preparation, are one option for local residents seeking to try their hand at gardening.
insight to these issues. More than happy to provide guidance, Norma Zimmerman from Zimmerman’s Greenhouse of Ephrata supplied ideas for someone hoping to grow vegetables but lacking yard space. “Healthy homegrown vegetables (can be grown) from your own garden or patio,” she encouraged. “Grape or cherry tomatoes are the easiest tomato to grow for new gardeners, and herbs are also easy to grow in containers.” For the past six years, Community Bible Church in Marietta has offered a creative solution for those who do not have space for a garden but would like to develop a green thumb, offering rototilled plots to interested community members upon completion of an application. Bonnie Kleinhans is in her second year overseeing the 32 plots, each measuring 30 by 20 feet. “We are blessed with the land and wanted to share it with others
and to interact with the community,” explained Kleinhans. A raised bed garden can also be a beneficial option, as it can confine the garden to a small location, allowing cultivators to concentrate their efforts. Other benefits of raised beds include a natural barrier that deters weeds and pests while at the same time holding nutrients, improving drainage, and avoiding compaction. Joshua Wenger of Wenger’s Greenhouse in Lititz emphasized the value of a family gardening project and offered helpful tips for those daunted by the thought of getting started. “Start small, keep it simple the first year, then branch out with experience,” Wenger suggested. “Imported vegetables cannot equal the freshness, taste, and nutritional value of homegrown fruits and vegetables.” As with any worthwhile endeavor, there are sure to be challenges along the way, but a
little effort goes a long way. Taking care of weeds before they get out of control and seeking advice from a seasoned gardener will provide a head start for success. “The Lord has a lot of life lessons to teach us from plants, and the best botany classes are hands-on digging in the dirt and tending growing plants,” Wenger shared. “Dedicate time daily or weekly to weeding, watering, and pruning and you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers and a bountiful harvest.” Lancaster and Chester counties are known for their farms and family-owned operations. Whether the goal is organic, homegrown produce or a refreshing array of blooms, the answers to getting started on a gardening adventure can be found right within the local community.

Clear Water For Heroes Fishing Tournament Planned By Ann Mead Ash
Bucher Elementary thirdgrade student and Cub Scout Pack 93 member Case Baccio likes to fish, and so do his friends. “A lot of people I know love to fish,” said Case. After attending a Warrior Weekend to Remember in Milltown, Ohio, in July of 2019, Case had an idea. The gathering, which is sponsored by Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals (BS3G), the nonprofit arm of the Fastrax sky diving team, is held to honor veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes. The event includes enriching experiences that facilitate friendships and encourage
emotional healing. Inspired by the gathering, Case decided to combine his love of fishing with a goal of raising $8,000 in scholarships to send two participants to the 2020 Warrior Weekend, scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, to Sunday, July 12. Case is working with others to organize the Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament, which will be held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, more commonly known as Camp Mack, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, on Sunday, May 17. The tournament will be open to both children and adults. The adult tournament will be held from 7 to 11 a.m., followed by a barbecue lunch, and the children’s tournament will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. According to Eric McCullough, who is helping

Case to organize the event, scoring of the competition will be based on each participant’s heaviest catches. “(Contestants) will be scored on their top five (fish),” explained McCullough, who noted that the Camp Mack lake is home to fish in a variety of sizes. Case attended the 2019 Warrior Weekend with his mother, Ali Bucher, and McCullough, who is Bucher’s boyfriend. “My mother’s boyfriend is a professional skydiver with Team Fastrax,” explained Case. Team Fastrax is a professional skydiving team that supports the Warrior Weekend. “They bring together veterans and family members of veterans who were killed,” added Case. McCullough, who was a new member to the team in early 2019, wanted Case and Bucher to learn about the Weekend to Remember. Shortly after arriving, Bucher met a woman named Diana Wiener, who had journeyed from Kentucky to the event. Case explained that Wiener is a member of a Gold Star Family, meaning that she is an immediate family member of a service member who died while serving in a time of conflict. “We are now friends with her,” said Baccio. McCullough explained that Wiener lost her son, Jeffery, who was serving in the Navy in 2014,

but Bucher added that the pain of losing Jeffery was still fresh when the two women met. The experience of meeting Wiener and learning her story made such an impression on Case that he returned to Pennsylvania eager to talk to his Scout troop about ways to help out. “A lot of (members of) my den like to fish,” said Case. “We thought, ‘Why not hold a fishing tournament?’” Bucher explained that the family has been working with Matthew Adams, an executive at the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America. “I asked if he could help, and he suggested we hold it at Camp Mack, and the Boy Scouts would help promote it,” said Bucher. She added that she is especially grateful to friends and family taking part in the effort. The City of Lancaster Office of Promotion and the Lancaster City Alliance recently released a bingo game to promote a safe and fun way to continue shopping and dining in Lancaster city amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The first of four bingo cards will feature city restaurants that offer takeout; cards are available on the @visitlanccity Instagram account or by emailing LOOP@cityoflancasterpa.com. Participants who want to play bingo and compete for a prize will order takeout or delivery from the eateries listed on the card to complete a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line across the card to achieve bingo. Participants should photograph themselves enjoying the food or just the food itself. Once they complete a line on the bingo card, participants may submit their completed card and photographs by emailing their photos to LOOP@cityoflancasterpa.com or sending a direct message on Instagram to @visitlanccity with the photos and the marked card attached. Each bingo submitted will be entered into a drawing to receive Downtown Dollars for a dining experience. More than one entry may be submitted. If there are two bingos on one card, that counts as two entries. One winner will be drawn every two weeks. The first two bingo cards will feature restaurants, and the next two cards will feature city retail shops. The bingo idea came from Provo City, Utah. To plan a visit or for event information, readers may visit www.VisitLancasterCity.com. For more information about Lancaster City Alliance, readers may visit www.lancastercityalliance.org.

Power Of Music from pg 1 nursing home administration, made a suggestion. “I know somebody who can sing,” noted Steiner, who taught at Lancaster Mennonite High School for 18 years. The singer Steiner had in mind was Manheim resident Mackenzie Brubaker, currently a junior at Messiah College studying praise and worship. Hanna and Steiner took the idea to the Fairmount COVID-19 task force, a group of Fairmount leaders that meets daily to discuss how to implement COVID19 updates from local, state, and federal entities. With permission from the task force, Brubaker arrived at the campus on March 21 with her guitar and some sound equipment to give residents socially distant concerts of hymns. Beginning at 1 p.m., Brubaker held five mini concerts, making her way around the Fairmount campus at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. Brubaker first set up on the south side of the Crest View building. After completing a 25-minute concert, she moved to the north side of Crest View. By 2 p.m., Brubaker was singing classic hymns and taking a few requests at the Wheat Ridge building. Hanna noted that residents responded positively, with many of them singing along from their windows, balconies, or patios. “(Brubaker) probably sang eight songs and took two or three requests (per concert),” recalled Hanna, who added that at the last concert, Brubaker sang an
original song. Hanna said that video of Brubaker’s concert was also posted to Facebook and received positive responses. One resident emailed Hanna about the concert, saying in part, “I wanted to let you know (that the music) is something we miss. We enjoyed the variety; that is a blessing in these challenging times. We pray often for insight and understanding for wisdom for our leadership to keep the virus from coming here.” “Our residents are being very patient,” noted Hanna. “It can be frustrating when you’re used to getting out and about and socializing.” Looking ahead, he said that community leaders are moving forward one day at a time, being careful to review Fairmount’s policies to be sure they align with the health restrictions. “It’s an unprecedented time, and we’re trying to do our best,” said Hanna. “We know it will be a long haul.” Fairmount is located on 55 acres in West Earl Township. The community consists of two adjoing campuses presently offering 114 licensed Health Care beds, 74 licensed personal care beds, 12 residential living residences, 103 apartments, and 52 cottages. The organization is governed by a nine-member board of directors. More information about the organization may be found at www.Fairmount Homes.org or by calling 717354-1800.
Fairmount nurse Lisa Martin (left) recently received a scholarship check from Fairmount president and CEO Jerry D. Lile. Fairmount nurse Lisa Martin was recently awarded a Pennsylvania Association of Directors of Nursing Administration (PADONA) Nursing Education Scholarship. Martin is currently working toward her Bachelor of Science in Nursing through Millersville University. To qualify for the scholarship, she needed two letters of recommendation, one from a PADONA member and one from one of her professors. She also needed to be in good standing academically and
to submit an essay. Martin has spent the last 10 years working at Fairmount in Ephrata. She worked for the first nine years as a certified nursing assistant, then enrolled in a nursing program to become a registered nurse (RN). After graduating in 2018, she moved into the position of RN unit supervisor. Fairmount, a nonprofit Life Plan community, is located at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata.

Students from the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) attended a broadcast of an episode of WITF’s “Smart Talk” on Feb. 27 at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. The program was a remote broadcast of the station’s daily public affairs radio program. The day’s topic was career and technical education (CTE). Students from CTE institutions from all over the region attended the broadcast. Keith Yohn, assistant administrative director of the LCCTC, was one of the chaperones for the LCCTC students attending the broadcast. He said that the radio show was an opportunity to share information and insight on CTE and on the role that career and technology centers have in preparing their students to further their education. The broadcast featured interviews and panel discussions with questions from the students in the audience. According to the Smart Talk website, interviewees and panelists included Gene Barr, president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. Barr spoke about the demand for a technically skilled workforce.

Mission Church Launches Community Food Pantry might have moved up the timeline on the food pantry, the leaders hope to keep it going indefinitely. “In this climate, we are not entirely sure how it will be resourced, but the Lord has already shown us He will provide,” Lingenfelter remarked. “We will keep pursuing food resources, and we will continue to give it away as we have it.” Bethesda Mission Outreach in Mechanicsburg helped Mission Church get its food pantry started by donating 14 pallets of nonperishable food and household items, and it is continuing to support the new food pantry. Mission Church has also been able to purchase food from Blessings of Hope in Ephrata, and it aims to buy supplies from Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) as well. Local businesses have contributed to the food pantry with donations and planned food drives. Blessings of Hope and CPFB have also provided advice as Mission Church gets the pantry started. Local and regional nonprofits have been helpful, said Brian Bitler, Mission Church director of operations and strategic advancement. The Lancaster Food Hub, Mission Central, several local churches, and larger church-based food pantries in Ontario and Arizona have lent their expertise. “They have all been extremely helpful and willing to share information as we all work together to meet real needs in our communi-
When Mission Church bought the former Lancaster County Christian School building at 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, in April 2018, the congregation had more than enough room for a sanctuary, children’s ministry classrooms, and staff offices. Launching a food pantry was one of the visions that had been created when looking at the abundant space. When the current crisis hit, church leaders spent time in prayer and determined that now was the right time to turn the vision into a reality. “We stepped out in faith, and things fell into place quickly,” remarked Mission Church senior pastor Jerry Lingenfelter. “The Lord has brought great partners to help us with supplies and the logistical infrastructure to get things moving. While we are thrilled to house the pantry, it is really a full community effort. There are a lot of great organizations in this region and around the country and even in Canada who have helped us.” Lingenfelter noted that Mission Church exists to make disciples who are loved and sent to the glory of God. “We believe we are called to preach the Gospel and then live what we preach. Right now, the food pantry is a great way to offer the love of Christ to those in need,” Lingenfelter said. While the state shutdown
