A Surprising Friendship Pathways Presentation Focuses On World War II Prisoners In America
n early 2020, Donna J. Stoltzfus, author of the young adult book “Captive,” was beginning to make presentations about the fictional tale of a young boy living on a farm in Lancaster County during World War II. The arrival of COVID-19 restrictions in March of 2020 delayed those events, but on March 21, 2022, Stoltzfus addressed more than 30 people gathered at Landis Homes as part of the Pathways Institute of Lifelong Learning program. Donna’s story of John, a young teen who goes to live and work on a Mennonite neighbor’s farm in the 1940s, was inspired by Christmas cards and a poem given to Donna’s grandparents by a former German prisoner of war (POW) named Karl Demmler. Demmler worked for Stoltzfus’ grandfather Reuben G. Stoltzfus at Glick’s Tomato Farm in Smoketown during the summer of 1945.
I
The poem read, in part, “The little piece of home we found here / Keeps our memories forever here / God be with you and keep you from danger / All of you that became precious to us.”
“This story of friendship (during that time) is not that unusual. There are other stories of POWs working on farms who formed friendships.” In her presentation, Donna said that few Americans realize that POWs were housed in the U.S. during World War II. “Eventually more than 500 camps holding more than 425,000 POWs were spread throughout the country,” Donna explained, adding that 370,000 POWs were German, 51,000 were Italian, and about 5,500 were Japanese. According to Donna, the U.S. government hoped if it treated enemy soldiers well, POWs
abroad would be treated fairly, and the government wanted to show the benefits of a strong democracy. Camps followed the Geneva Convention of 1929, an agreement between 47 governments about how POWs should be treated. POWs took part in concerts, sports, and classes. Demmler was held at the Reading Army Airfield, where he and other prisoners were picked up by one of the Glick’s sons and transported, along with a guard, to the farm in Smoketown to work weekdays. Donna’s research also brought her into contact with Ernst Rinder of Lititz, whose friendship with a guard eventually brought him back to Lancaster County to live. Rinder was captured near Florence, Italy, in 1944. He was brought by ship to Norfolk, Va., and moved to Fort Indiantown Gap for safety reasons. Donna explained that about 25% of POWs were hardened Nazis, who could pose a danger to less-loyal POWs. “The U.S. government attempted to separate Nazis,” Donna noted. Donna J. Stoltzfus displays her book “Captive.”

According to Homeless Shelters Directory, there are an estimated 950 homeless individuals in Lancaster and Chester counties. It costs Good Samaritan Services (GSS) $35 to provide a night of shelter, two meals, supplies, and compassionate care to an individual. That is about one-third the cost of a hotel per night. The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club Ride for the Community raises funds for local and international needs.
Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club president Don Holm has a relaxed attitude toward the organization’s annual fundraising ride. “We like to attract as many riders as we can and just have a good time,” said Holm of the ride, which raises funds for a number of community organizations enough for club members to give away $50,000 in scholarships; $25,000 in district grants; and $109,500 in community fund grants in the last five years. who noted that this year, Rotary Club members are each sponsoring a rider from Lifecycles. Lifecycles, based in Wrightsville, is an organization that is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18. Lifecycles offers participants a chance to enjoy friendship, mentoring, and bike riding with a faith focus. Thirty Lifecycles participants will take part in the ride. In addition, the club has partnered with The Common Wheel to accept quality, gently used bikes from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. the day of the ride. More information about the organization may be found at www.thecommonwheel.com. Holm pointed out that funds have been used locally to aid high school students with continuing education. He noted that district grants allow a club president to choose a project to fund and that in 2021, that project was the Lancaster-Lebanon Education Fund to support IU13 students who needed
learning materials to use at home. Other local organizations that have benefited include Aaron’s Acres, Byrnes Health Education Center, Love INC of Lancaster County, and Off the Streets Lancaster. At a March meeting of the club, a special grant was awarded to aid victims of the war in Ukraine. “We are doing a $5,000 grant to an organization in Budapest, Hungary, to help get money to Ukrainian humanitarian relief,” said Holm. The 2021 event attracted nearly 100 riders. Those who would like to take part this year may register online by Wednesday, June 1, by searching for “Rotary Ride for the Community 2022” at www.active.com. Registration will also be open the day of the event. Questions may be directed to Steve Bareuther at sbareuther@msn.com. Sunrise Rotary welcomes new members. Readers who would like to learn more about the organization may visit www.lancastersunriserotaryofpa.com.

Donna reported that Demmler visited the U.S. several times after returning to East Germany following the war. She showed pictures of him playing his accordion at Landis Homes and relayed email messages she had exchanged with him. “He said, ‘My stay in Lancaster County was the event of my life. This friendship without any prejudice was worth all the trouble,’” noted Donna. “I worked diligently at capturing a glimpse of that time on a Mennonite farm in 1944 in Lancaster,” said Donna. “This story of friendship (during that time) is not that unusual. There are other stories of POWs working on farms who formed friendships.” Donna is available to give presentations for other groups. More information about her is available at www.donnastoltzfus.com.

Track Teams Fall Short Against McCaskey
BY ERIC PYLES
In high school track and field, just like life, sometimes you are the hamster and sometimes you are the wheel. For the Conestoga Valley track teams, April 25th saw them being the wheel to McCaskey’s hamster with both sides falling to the Red Tornado. The girls lost 12426 and the boys, 111-39. Wins were hard to come by with just three for the Lady Buckskins and only four for the boys. Joey Castronova was the lone athlete to garner two first place finishes, taking the 400m while teaming up with Carson Miller, Joey Benedict, and Andrew Hoffner to take the 1600m relay. Emmanuel Gitonga (800m) and Zach Phy (300H) accounted for the other two wins. Three different Lady ‘Bucks enjoyed victories starting with Seana Dougherty in the 3200m and

ending with Jazlyn Cintron in the high jump. In between was Jessica Koenig’s 100H win. The track teams spent April 23rd at Wilson High School, competing in the Leonard Stephan Meet. The boy’s, behind a handful of bronze medals, finished 10th out of 21 teams while the girl’s finished 16th. Grace Lapp led the way for the Lady Buckskins, taking third in the 300H while also taking one of the legs of the 1600m relay that finished seventh. Cintron, Brooke Denlinger and Kylynn Frankford rounded out the 1600m relay team. Koenig tacked on a sixth place run in the 100H. Zach Stoudt picked up a bronze medal in the high jump while adding a seventh place in the long jump. Phy (300H) and Gitonga (800m) also earned bronze medals. Castronova helped the cause with a fifth-place finish in the 400m while Aidan Zimmerman settled for eighth place in the javelin. BASEBALL The early season difficulties the baseball team worked through have gone away and have been replaced with a slide that is now seven games long. Hempfield collected a 16-1 win on April 20th with Owen Fisher taking the loss after getting the start. Evan Lapp finished on the mound with the pair combining for five strikeouts. Sam Thompson provided the offense with his third inning home run. One day later the Buckskins went a full seven innings, but the result was a 9-0 loss to Township. Abdiel Fernandez-Colon accounted for the lone hit with his fifth inning single. Connor Esbenshade was on th hook for the loss after covering the opening four innings. Preston Fisher and Tucker Hastings handled the final two frames.
April 22nd brought the Falcons of Cedar Crest to Witmer with the visitors posting a 12-4 win. Thompson got the start and took the loss with Caden Miller covering the final two innings. The pair combined for five strikeouts. CV saw their offense split four ways with Fernandez, Lapp, Evan Wilson, and Jude Thompson all accounting for one RBI. The Buckskins were back at it on the 23rd, falling to Manheim Central by a 9-1 final. Hastings got the start and covered the initial three innings to absorb the loss. Preston Fisher and Wilson combined to cover the final three frames. Hastings broke up the Baron shutout with an RBI single in the sixth. CV finished with a 3-2 setback to McCaskey on April 25th. Luke Landis and Owen Fisher each enjoyed one RBI but neither had a hit. Landis pushed a run across with a fielder’s choice while Fisher went the sac fly route. Owen Fisher, along with Preston Fisher, covered the pitching duties with Owen taking the loss for five innings of work. TENNIS The tennis team finished their regular season on April 20th, topping McCaskey 3-2. Yuji Wenger was the lone singles winner with the double’s tandems of Henry McQuate-Krahnke and Grady Ray as
well as Ivan Shrom and Luke Snader accounting for the two other team points. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team sits at 5-6 after losses to Penn Manor and Exeter. CV fell to Penn Manor by a 30 count on the 21st with the Comets posting wins of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-15. Kenji Pha tallied 20 assists, Camden Clapper six kills and Kyle Hutchinson 12 digs in the loss. Conestoga Valley stepped outside the L-L for their April 25th battle with Exeter with the Eagles posting a 3-1 win (25-17, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-23). Hutchison picked up 16 digs while Pha dished out 22 assists. Carson Hoover added 10 kills. LACROSSE It does not happen often in high school lacrosse, but the Lady Buckskin managed to finish in a deadlock with Elizabethtown on April 25th, posting a 10-10 final. Annika Bredeman, Sophia Hess, Cassandra Malles and Alaina Culbert each lit the lamp twice while Caroline Kulp and Jordyn Hironimus added one score each. Jamie Handwerger finished with 13 saves. One day later CV ran into the force that is Manheim Township. The Lady Streaks collected a 21-2 win with Hess netting both Buckskin goals. Handwerger added another 13 saves to her season tally.

Jazlyn Cintron clears the bar at 4’-6” to win the high jump for the Buckskins in their 124-26, Section One loss at McCaskey on April 25.
On April 20th, CV faced another L-L mainstay in Hempfield with the Knights posting a 13-2 win. Handwerger finished with seven saves while Hess and Danae Ulrich split the two goals. The going was just as rough for the boys with losses to Penn Manor and Lancaster Country Day dropping the Buckskins to 9-4. Ben Nolt tallied 29 saves in the two losses while Jeff Fisher posted nine goals and four assists. Keller Dillman added four goals and two assists while Tyson Zwaska and Hunter Silvaggio picked up two scores each. Noah Nolt picked up the final score. SOFTBALL The softball team erased a fourgame slide and replaced it with a three-game winning streak. Before the Lady Buckskins could kickstart the winning they had to deal with a 3-2 loss to Hempfield on the 20th. Rhiannon Henry struck out 13 but
surrendered three runs on three hits to take the loss. She did help herself with an RBI single, but CV’s only other run came from Hollyn Helsel’s RBI single, making it a 3-2 final. CV rebounded on the 22nd with an 11-0 win over Cedar Crest. Henry covered all five innings, adding nine strikeouts to get the win. Becca Hartranft led with two hits and four RBI while Alexa Freeburn added two hits and two RBI. Up next was a 4-1 win over Manheim Central on the 23rd. Henry, Hartranft, Freeburn and Laken Smith split the offense with one RBI apiece while Henry picked up the win thanks to her 11-strikeout performance. Conestoga Valley finished their three-game run with a 12-0 win over McCaskey on the 25th. Henry needed just five innings to rack up 12 strikeouts while Smith and Tori Rhoads paced the offense with six total RBI.
