Eighth Hope For Haiti Auction Planned BY ANN MEAD ASH

he Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction of Northern Lancaster County has been scheduled for Saturday, May 15, at the Hertzog Homestead Event Venue, 470 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. Organizers have planned a day that will include pony rides, food, and an auction. The auction began several years ago when a group of neighbors centered around the common goal of helping those living in poverty to gain education and employment skills to help them become selfsustainable. According to Kristen Hertzog, organizer of the event, the auction will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the last item is sold. Among the many pieces of merchandise that will go up for bids will be handmade quilts in a variety of sizes, lawn and garden supplies, antiques, collectibles, furniture, gift cards, baskets, and donated gently used items. “We are still accepting donations of new items and financial

T

gifts to offset the cost of the auction,” said Hertzog. Food that will be available for purchase will include chicken barbecue, salads, sub sandwiches, toasted cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, baked goods, and homemade doughnuts. Hertzog noted that extra attention has been paid to safety measures this year. “There’s natural social distancing due to the 23-acre size of the property (where the auction is held),” she explained. “We are taking precautions for safety for both the volunteers and the attendees,” she said, adding that masks are strongly encouraged. All the funds raised at the 2021 event will benefit two organizations that help provide education and business training for Haitian small business owners. Paradigm Shift is the education division of Haiti Transformation, which teaches leadership skills and is led by Nelson and Sue Martin. Hope Library is located in Montrouis, Haiti, a town with a population of about 18,000. See Hope For Haiti pg 4

Theater And Arts Camps Scheduled BY ANN MEAD ASH

“It will be fun having a full summer after last year,” said Bente Weaver, production manager of Cavod Academy. “We had to cut back a little bit last year.” Weaver is referring to the changes that were made in 2020 in order to keep campers and community members safe during COVID-19 restrictions. Singer, author, and New Holland resident Shelleen Weaver runs a thrifty kitchen. “I see a recipe, and I don’t have an ingredient, so I think of what I can use instead,” said Shelleen, who turns to items she bought on sale, harvested from her garden, or purchased at roadside stands to fill the bill. But being thrifty does not keep Shelleen from being an adventurous cook. Shelleen Weaver holds a meal she prepared in her New Holland kitchen. Find the recipe at www.townlively.com/coconut -fried-chicken.

“My cooking is a cross between two motivations - how do I use this up and move it out of the freezer?’ and ‘How do I make it healthy?’” noted Shelleen, who added that during COVID-19 restrictions the motivation to use items already in her freezers took over. “I have a ton of freezers,” said Shelleen, who admitted to at least five filled with everything from flour to a case of chicken drumsticks to items from the trees and vines behind the house she shares with her husband, Tom, and their three children. “We have apples, pears, grapes, blackberries, figs, pawpaws, and persimmons,” said Shelleen.

After disabled United States Air Force veteran Jennifer Cahill was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May of 2020, she was amazed at the number of people who reached out to help her and her husband, Mike, who is also a disabled veteran, with expenses. “I got this diagnosis, and (we) learned we had no burial insurance,” recalled Jennifer. “Some friends took it upon themselves to start fundraisers, and people I don’t know … strangers reached out … even during the pandemic.” The fundraisers were so successful, the Cahills were able to prepay Jennifer’s expenses, and they had money left over. By September of 2020, Jennifer had made up her mind to find a way to aid others in the same situation. “I thought how awesome it would be for others to have that support and help,” she shared. The result is Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which will hold its kickoff event on Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the grounds of the Reinholds Fire Station, 138 W. Main St., Reinholds. The event will include car and motorcycle shows and rides, a Chinese auction, more than 20 product and craft vendors, several food trucks, and live entertainment. Spectators are welcome at 8 a.m., with registrations for cars and bikes held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The ride is scheduled to start at noon. Mike noted that the mission of the charity is twofold. First, the group helps preplan and prepay final expenses and arrangements for female veterans who have terminal cancer and do not have life or burial insurance or other resources. He explained that many people believe that veterans are automatically covered for these expenses, but that is not necessarily the case, and many families have to pay significant out-of-pocket expenses. “We will offset final expenses,” explained Mike, who added that funds could be available up to $16,500. Second, Team Jennifer Cahill wants to raise awareness concerning female

veterans. Mike pointed out that when most people think of veterans, they picture a man in a dress uniform, but there are many female veterans like Jennifer, who served in communications and security in Alaska from 1995 to 1999. Mike said that the rides at the kickoff event will follow a protocol similar to the Make-A-Wish Convoy but with hot rods and motorcycles rather than trucks. “(Cars) will go 20 miles in one direction, and bikes will go 30 miles in another direction,” he explained. In addition to product and craft vendors, there will be a Chinese auction featuring a saddlebag for a 2017 Harley Davidson Breakout. Live entertainment will be provided by Easily Amused, a Southern rock cover band called Buckskin Whiskey, and Dirt Road Redemption. Food items for purchase will be provided by Holy Smoked Meats, Fink’s French Fries, and Auntie Anne’s, among others. Team Jennifer Cahill will sell hot dogs in the pavilion. Jennifer and Mike noted that they would like to raise more than $15,000 from the event. Readers may find more information about the organization by visiting https://teamjennifercahillcharities .org or by searching for “Team Jennifer Cahill Charities” on Facebook.

In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and

Shelleen’s journey to cooking with free-range chicken and carbfree ingredients began several years ago. “I wanted to cook healthier, so it became my practice that every time I went to a health food store, I would find one ingredient I knew nothing about and try to make something from it,” said Shelleen, who recalled bringing home coconut flour with a plan to make muffins. “I called a 1-800 number on the back of the coconut flour, and they said, ‘Don’t make your muffins. They will be like bricks.’” Instead, they recommended a book, “Cooking with Coconut Flour” by Bruce Fife, which has become a staple of her kitchen. Shelleen is also known for her Amish delight fruit salad, so named because of its popularity in the Plain community. The recipe is available to those who register at www.shelleenweaver.com.

During my visit, Shelleen served Coconut Fried Chicken, using a chicken she said rated an 8 out of 10 on her healthy chicken spectrum, which is based on whether the chicken has had organic feed, well water, no antibiotics, and plenty of exercise. “I prefer a chicken that has run around,” said Shelleen, who noted that the recipe also calls for unsweetened coconut flakes, eggs, salt, and a variety of nuts. “Here are some ground almonds I had in my freezer. Pecans would be great, or you can throw in sesame seeds,” she shared, adding that she fries the coated chicken in plenty of coconut oil until it is “nice and toasty.” Find the full recipe for Shelleen’s coconut fried chicken with this article at www.townlively .com/coconut-fried-chicken. Along with the chicken, Shelleen served a healthy romaine salad, a side of peaches, and a moist chocolate sugar-free cookie made with okra that she said has no carbohydrates. “The flour is one part

In May of 2020, Tabor Community Services and Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) began the process of merging. Over the summer, administrators and board members dealt with the legalities of funds transfers and by fall, approvals by local and state agencies had been granted. At the same time, board members were updating bylaws, and the organization was working through setting organizational procedures that would create a single entity working to offer housing advocacy and financial empowerment to area residents. Now, the organization is ready to announce its new name - Tenfold and introduce supporters and those who are less familiar with the work

of the organization to the next chapter in the vision for providing affordable housing. On Tuesday, May 11, at 7 p.m., Tenfold will hold a virtual celebration called “Unlocking Opportunity, Multiplying Our Impact.” The event will be hosted by Brian Roche of WGAL TV. According to Mike McKenna, CEO of Tenfold, the event will include a video that tells what Tenfold brings to the community through the experience of a client who benefited from services from what were once Tabor and LHOP. “We will also be talking about the future of this combined organization and sharing what that vision looks like,” said McKenna, who added that a silent auction and two musical performances will round out the hourlong presentation. “There’s a lot of great content,

more challenging in a virtual environment, but it has forced us to be more intentional,” stated McKenna. The virtual event will have several goals, according to McKenna. “We want to reinforce to everyone that the programs and services that they have known and cared about are continuing (to address) affordable and financial empowerment through the lens of partnership,” he said. “We value all the partners we work with in the community, and … we see all of that as contributing to the idea that there will be a future with greater equitable housing and financial security.” There is no cost to watch the livestreamed event, and Tenfold invites members of the community to hold watch parties with family members and friends. and we are going to keep it moving,” said McKenna. As the merger was happening, COVID-19 restrictions and the resulting impact on clients presented challenges for the organization. “The clients we were serving were really hard hit by the loss of income … which put a lot of households at greater risk of eviction,” said McKenna, who noted that although homeless services were strained, adaptations were made to continue to provide support. In addition, although LHOP personnel had moved into the Tabor building at 308 E. King St., Lancaster, all offices were closed, and employees were working remotely. “We didn’t see clients in person with a few exceptions,” said McKenna. “Most of our counseling and case management was happening through Zoom and phone and text.” Challenges were apparent in bringing the two teams together as well, but regular virtual meetings are addressing those growing pains. “It’s

at PCA&D. “We have a diverse Advisory Committee with members from the local, state, and national arts, education, and health care communities.” PCA&D’s Healing Arts program offers new pathways and opportunities for students to explore connections between art, community, and medicine. Students now have access to someone working in the field who can mentor them and help build their portfolios. As for the community, the Healing Arts program is another way for PCA&D to get involved with a variety of organizations in Lancaster County. When the program was in the works, the COVID-19 pandemic was not on the college’s radar. “This program took off at a time when the entire world was figuring out how to think about what they experienced and the resilience they demonstrated during the pandemic, and a program like this helps them answer these questions,” noted Snovel. PCA&D made it a mission to ensure that everyone would have

Four years ago, Richard Price; his sons, Jacob and Jordan; and their families established the Cynthia E. Price Scholarship for the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D). The scholarship was created to honor Richard’s late wife, artist and craftswoman Cynthia, and to financially assist students determined to improve the world around them through their artwork. The Cynthia E. Price Scholarship served as a catalyst for PCA&D to figure out how a program in the healing arts could bring the community together. The president of PCA&D, Michael Molla, created a new strategic plan concentrating on external relationships that would enable PCA&D to work in conjunction with organizations and institutions around Lancaster County. PCA&D applied for and was awarded a Passion Grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation. “This grant gave us the ability to host an artist in residence and form an advisory committee beyond PCA&D to oversee

the Healing Arts program,” explained Todd Snovel, special assistant to the president and director of strategic initiatives and development at PCA&D. The college did not have to look far for an artist to fill the residency. PCA&D was preparing to distribute a press release when Jennifer Quigley made a cold call to the college. “We scheduled an interview with her to hear about her background, vision, and passion for the healing arts, and from that, it was clear we found our artist in residence,” said Snovel. Quigley’s expertise is not simply art therapy, but expressive arts therapy. It’s a process that incorporates numerous creative approaches such as music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, play therapy, and more, which are blended to fit the needs of the client. The Healing Arts program launched in January at PCA&D. “We’ve received a great response from the Advisory Committee,” noted Deborah Barber, director of the institute for leadership, creative entrepreneurship, and innovation

“We will have different things this year, along with things folks are used to as well,” said Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community. “We decided this year’s theme is ‘Same Run. Different Fun.’” The run Link spoke of is the annual 5K that has been part of the annual Friendship Fest and 5K since 2017. In 2020, the 5K alone was held in September, but this year, the 5K and the Fest will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 8, beginning at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Registration for the 5K is open at www.friendshipcommunity.net. Registration will also be available on site on the day of the event. Free Tshirts will be given to participants

Both cash and a limited-contact card payment option will be available. Link reported that local greenhouses have partnered with Friendship to donate items for sale. In a second tent, also open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friendship Heart Gallery will offer some artwork for sale, including items from the Primitives by Cathy collection. Among these will be water bottles and blocks that sit on shelves and bear

the work of a Friendship artist and sometimes inspirational messages. “(Primitives by Cathy) takes Friendship artwork and puts it on home décor pieces,” said Link, who noted that coasters and notebooks will be among the pieces for sale. “It’s not just a gift; it’s a gift with purpose and meaning,” said Link, who noted that a portion of the sale will go back to the gallery. She said both the plants and the artwork make great Mother’s Day gifts. Link said that she hopes some individuals who are served by Friendship Community will be at the Fest. “Doran has been at previous

Doran, who is legally blind, is known for the woven potholders he sells by donation. “It’s a craft he loves to do, and he donates proceeds back to Friendship,” said Link, who added that the potholders can be used as hotpads and coasters, and that each is colorful and distinctive. “It’s art and function (together),” she noted. Another individual who may attend is Josh Doughty, who fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing a book along with his home-based services team member, Dave, who meets with him regularly. “They’re buddies,” said Link, who explained that Dave encouraged Josh in the writing process. Josh will bring copies of “Josh’s Journey … With Family, Friends & God” to the Fest. A drive-through chicken barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of this year’s Fest. Both individual half-chickens and chicken meals will be sold. Meals will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a roll with butter, and a beverage. Chicken may be purchased by car or as a walk-up. There will be no seating area. Link said organizers are looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the community in a new way. “It will be a fun day at Friendship Community. We are excited to see the smiles behind the masks,” she said.

Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy Scheduled For Mother’s Day scaled-down convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-AWish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with lifethreatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wishconvoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.”

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drivethrough chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website. The public is also invited to participate in an online auction that will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wish convoy.org. “We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch

said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.” People are invited to cheer the convoy along the route, which can be found at https://tinyurl.com /u8ddcvrw. “There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.” The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel a connection.” This is the second time the event will begin at the Manheim Auto Auction. Haley Breslin, a student at the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy in Lancaster, has been chosen to participate in the Kiev Grand Prix Festival, a ballet competition in Ukraine. This competition has a longstanding reputation of including some of the world’s most talented ballerinas. Breslin is a junior at the Commonwealth Charter Academy. She will join other students from the United States in the competition, but she is the only student from Pennsylvania who will participate. Haley has been working toward this goal since September of last year. She dances six days a week and fits in extra lessons between school and her regular dance schedule. This will be the second time that Viktor Yeliohin, the ballet master of the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, will participate in the event, as he has been selected as one of the event’s many judges. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the competition will be an entirely virtual event. Breslin will participate in three categories: a classical variation, a contemporary piece, and improvisation, which is a new category this year. She has already submitted her videos to the committee, and they will be judged at the beginning of May. Final judging will take place on Monday and Tuesday, May 10 and 11, and the contestants’ videos will be posted on the competition’s Facebook page, which may be found by searching for “Grand Prix Kyiv.” Winners will be announced on Wednesday, May 12, followed by a special ballet performance. Yeliohin welcomes all students to his studio. The academy will also host its own ballet competition, Relevé, in early November, with proceeds benefiting children’s health initiatives. More information may be found at www.vyballet.com and www.relevepa.org. Questions may be directed to Yeliohin at 717-4196688 or relevedanceorg@gmail.com.

Parking Lot Opens, Ride Sharing Program Posted The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and South Central Transit Authority (SCTA) opened the Christian Street parking lot on April 1 to assist Amtrak users starting their trip in Lancaster. The lot is located on the corner of Christian Street and McGovern Avenue across from the Amtrak station and has 53 surface spaces, including two handicappedaccessible spaces available for monthly parking with no daily parking options. This project is the first step in expanding parking at the Lancaster Train Station. The total cost for construction was approximately $530,000 in state transportation funds. The lot is owned and was constructed by PennDOT but will be managed by SCTA. Additionally, Pennsylvanians are reminded that Shared Ride programs are available in every county and fixed-route transportation systems statewide offer accessible transportation. Trips can include activities of daily living, but in the midst of the ongoing pandemic, residents can also

use the services for assistance in getting to mass vaccination sites and any site where a vaccine is available to individuals. Free transportation to vaccinations may also be available for qualifying individuals. Additionally, the Senior Shared Ride program enables all individuals age 65 and older to use shared-ride, curb-to-curb services and pay only a small portion of the regular sharedride fare. Individuals with disabilities ages 18 to 64 may access transportation through the Persons with Disabilities Program. Any interested riders in the Lancaster area should note that the Lancaster vaccination center is accepting appointments. Individuals can register for a future appointment online at www.vaccinatelancaster.org. For more information on multimodal transportation at PennDOT, visit the Projects & Programs section of www.penndot.gov. For more information on Red Rose routes or local transportation to and from vaccination sites, visit www.redrosetransit.com or contact 610-406-4517 or vnixdorf@sctapa.com.

Ewell Plaza Survey Posted The next phase of community engagement for Ewell Plaza began recently with a survey to gather input and inspiration for the façade artwork on the future parking garage and public library. This survey is the first step of additional community engagement opportunities taking place this spring and summer. Artists Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt will host listening sessions and workshops with the Lancaster community that, along with the survey, will inform the design concepts of the façade artwork. Members of the Lancaster community will have the opportunity to rank their favorite of at least two concept designs. The Lancaster Parking Authority has contracted Behar and Marquardt to create the façade artwork on its

development in Ewell Plaza, which will be affixed to the new Lancaster Public Library building. The City of Lancaster is facilitating the community engagement for this public art project. The artists are currently coordinating with the city to finalize dates and formats for the upcoming public participation. Readers may visit www.engage.cityoflancaster pa.com and click on the Ewell Plaza Art Explorations project to complete the survey. The survey will be open until Friday, May 14. Nearly two years ago, the public space on the east side of the 100 block of North Queen Street was renamed after Barney Ewell, an Olympian from Lancaster. To learn more about Ewell Plaza, the new home of the Lancaster Public Library, visit www.ewellplaza.com.
