A Very Good Cause Auction For Ronald McDonald House To Return BY ANN MEAD ASH
hen Michael Leader, a longtime member of the board of directors of Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, wrote to Moses Smucker of Narvon in January of 2008, he was asking for help. Leader knew that Smucker had organized the auction for the Nicholas Stoltzfus House project in Wyomissing, and he was wondering if Smucker would lend his talents to a similar event for “a very good cause.” Ronald McDonald House provides services free of charge to families of children being treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. In 2008, the house required a $4 million expansion, which would add 15 rooms for a total of 35. The Plain community of Lancaster County had utilized the house often, and Smucker responded to Leader’s letter by holding a meeting at his house in March of 2008. The group included ULTWMA members; members of the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans, an organization that makes and donates blankets for veterans in hospice care; representatives of local hospice associations to which the Stitchers contribute blankets; and special guest speakers Liz Ackerman of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, Pennsylvania state Rep. Keith Greiner, and Diane Absher of the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists (NSDAC). with Baker leading the Pledge of Allegiance and offering a prayer and Summers noting that the organization has now donated 1,100 blankets to veterans. Ackerman coordinated a special ribbon-cutting, noting that the organization will now be known as the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans of the War Memorial Association. Mary Lawhead, volunteer coordinator for Caring Hospice Services, shared stories of veterans who have received blankets, noting, “The blankets bring a profound and wonderful security to the veterans.” Carol Vandenburg of Hospice & Community Care described a pinning, a special ceremony of the We Honor Veterans program. She noted that a blanket from the Stitchers is draped over the veteran’s bed. Vandenburg’s associate Jen Horan gave the Patriotic Stitchers a pin and a certificate emblematic of the Starfish Award. “It’s for volunteers that go above and beyond,” she explained. Amy Roth Sandrolini, volunteer coordinator with Amedisys hospice of Lancaster, told the story of a local veteran who received a blanket resembling an American flag made by Darla Carpenter. Sandrolini held up a similar blanket with 13 stars, saying, “This is a work of art … a work of love.” Others who participated in the ceremony are Valerie Jefferson and Marissa Elfawd from Compassus Hospice and Kevin Cross and Cynthia Matthews from Pro-Medica Hospice. Greiner thanked the volunteers for their efforts, recalling that in his capacity as chair of the board of the Ressler Mill Foundation, he had previously been able to help the Stitchers with a grant to purchase blanket-making supplies. He noted that Summers worked with Bob Zook, president of ULTWMA, to become an affiliate. Absher, regent of the Pennsylvania division of the NSDAC, explained that her organization is dedicated to historical, patriotic, and educational causes. Absher chose the Patriotic Stitchers to be recipients of statewide giving in 2020. She

Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are more willing to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to
work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a well-socialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.
Meet Ben! This 6-month-old boy is available for adoption from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center after finding himself at the shelter again. Ben takes some time to warm up to new people, but once he does, he is incredibly loving; his favorite activity is headbutting and begging for scratches. He might be a little spicy at times, but he enjoys the finer things in life, like sunbathing, batting around toys, and harassing his people! If interested in adopting Ben, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-917-6979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.
Meet Eden! This senior lady is available to be adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. She came to the shelter as a stray and now is longing for a new life of luxury. Eden still has plenty of energy and enjoys walks and playing fetch in the yard. This lovely gal doesn’t like other dogs, but she adores every human she meets. Eden is hoping to find her furever home soon because shelter life doesn’t suit her. If interested in adopting Eden, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-917-6979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.

bounce back win over McCaskey after a loss to Hempfield was welcome but most likely not enough to The sign of a true champion is earn the Buckskins a playoff berth. how you bounce back from defeat. CV sits just outside the cutlines for For the boys’ volleyball team, a solid both playoff spots with only a few regular season matches remaining. That bounce back win over McCaskey was via a 3-0 final on May 3rd with CV posting wins of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-16. Kenji Pha piloted the offense with 20 assists with Carson Hoover collecting eight kills. needed that win after falling to Hempfield 3-1 on April 28th. CV opened the match with a 26-24 win, but Hempfield shut down any upset bid with back-to-back 25-10 victories. The Knights closed out the match with a 25-18 game four. Hoover tallied 20 kills while Kyle Hutchinson had 13 digs and Drew Hultstrand 25 assists. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team is holding out hope that the roller coaster season that saw them follow an 8-2 opening run with a 1-4 stretch has one last upswing that pushes the Buckskins into the postseason. CV kicked off that two-game push on May 3rd, topping Garden Spot 10-4 behind Tyson Zwaska’s three goals. and Noah Nolt cleaning up the offense. Ben Nolt turned away eight shots to earn the win. Before the ‘Bucks got to the win they finished that 1-4 stretch with losses to Cocalico and Great Valley. Twenty-three Ben Nolt saves were not enough to keep Cocalico at bay on April 29th, with the Eagles posting a 10-7 win. Fisher (3g-2a) and Silvaggio (2g) led the attack with help from Keller Dillman (1g) and Noah Nolt (1g). CV closed out April on the 30th with a 12-9 loss to Great Valley. Only three players scored led by Fisher’s five. Dillman added two goals while Noah Nolt picked up the final two scores. Ben Nolt turned away 19 shots. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girl’s lacrosse team experienced two kinds of heartbreak in losses to Cedar Crest and Penn Manor. Up first was the setback to Cedar Crest on April 28th where the Lady Buckskins were unable to maintain their halftime lead leading to an 8-7 loss. Danae Ulrich (4g) and Jordyn Hironimus (3g) accounted for the offense while nine Jamie Handwerger saves fell just short. The second round of heartbreak came on May 3rd where a failed second half surge left Penn Manor with a 17-14 victory. CV trailed 12-5 at the break, meaning a 9-5 second half surge was not enough. Handwerger posted another nine save effort while Sophia Hess led the offense with four goals. Ulrich tacked on two more while Annika Bredeman, Cassandra Malles, Bailey Post-Raeburn, Caroline Kulp, Allyson Stauffer, Isabelle Miller, and Mikyla Rineer divvied up the remaining seven goals. BASEBALL The baseball team enjoyed a double sweet win over LampeterStrasburg on April 27th not only snapping a seven-game slide, but also avenging a 13-3 season opening loss. Connor Esbenshade allowed three hits, two runs, and added 10 strikeouts during his nearly six innings on the mound, earning the win with help from Preston
Fisher and his relief work. Abdiel Fernandez, Tucker Hastings, Evan Wilson, and Owen Fisher split the run production with one RBI each. Things turned on the 30th with a 10-7 loss to Elizabethtown. Hastings got the start but exited after five runs and one out. Caden Miller covered the remaining five plus innings with the pair combining for seven strikeouts. Owen Fisher and Evan Lapp covered the offense, each posting a two-hit game. Fisher collected three RBI while Lapp drove in two runs. Up next was Solanco on May 2. CV used three pitchers in the 11-6 loss with Owen Fisher taking the hit after getting the start and covering four innings. Lapp and Jude Thompson split up the remaining three frames and four runs and combined with Fisher for eight strikeouts. Titus York made the most of his one hit, driving in two-fifth inning runs while Miller smacked a one run double in the sixth to highlight his twohit game. TENNIS The boy’s tennis team wrapped their regular and postseason over the last week, posting a 4-1 win over Governor Mifflin on April 27th to close out the regular season. One day later CV welcomed most of the L-L League for the Flight Tournament, but that hospitality did not lead to success. Henry McQuateKrahnke went 2-1 with wins over Justin Weist (Warwick) and Daniele Lerner (McCaskey) before falling to the eventual champion at number four singles, Jack Nyveldt of Elizabethtown. Jason Schlegelmilch picked up the only other singles win, topping Manheim Township’s Luke Welch in the first round before bowing out with a loss to Hempfield’s Andre Hurst. Yuji Wenger, in No. 1 singles and Nolan Miller at No. 2, dropped their first-round matches, falling out of their respective brackets in the process. The going was just as difficult in doubles action with Grady Ray and Ivan Shrom posting the only win, by topping Annville-Cleona’s Henry Waldhausen and Wyatt Alcala. A
quarterfinal loss to Lampeter-Strasburg’s Kyle Pawson and Jack Harnish ended the pair’s No. 3 doubles title run. CV’s two other doubles teams, Wenger and McQuateKrahnke and Miller and Schlegelmilch dropped out of their brackets with opening round losses. SOFTBALL The positive momentum gained by the softball team’s recent threegame run disappeared with a three-game slide. That slide started on April 27th with a 13-5 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. L-S jumped on Rhiannon Henry, scoring 11 of their 13 runs in the first three innings. Henry finished with nine strikeouts but still took the loss. CV plated three of their runs via the long ball with Laken Smith, Becca Hartranft and Henry all connecting on solo home runs. Conestoga Valley lasted just five innings in their 10-0 loss to Elizabethtown on the 29th. Henry covered all five innings with 10 runs and seven hits allowed. Hartranft picked up the lone hit, a third inning single. The May 2nd loss to Solanco went just four innings with the hosts posting a 16-0 win. Henry, Smith, and Alexa Freeburn collected one single each while Henry absorbed the loss after working three-plus innings. TRACK The track team participated in the Schuylkill Invitation on April 30th with both squads enjoying third place team finishes. The Buckskins earned five gold medals with three of them establishing new meet records. Zach Phy (300H) and Zach Stoudt (long jump) handled the boy’s meet records while the 400m relay team of Hallie Schnapf, Isabelle Johnson, Alondra Ortiz, and Mae Linder handled the girls. Nick Tran added a gold with a win in the 100m. Jaz Cintron, Linder, Johnson, and Kylynn Frankford also earned gold winning the 1600m relay. CV returned to dual meet action on May 2nd where the boy’s fell to Manheim Township 95-55 while the girl’s won 76-74.
