Everyone Wins In Biggest Loser Competition BY ANN MEAD ASH

ave Zuilkoski, superintendent of Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD), and Erik Orndorff, superintendent of Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), are also president and vice president of the Rotary Club of Paradise, respectively. Feeling the weight of having to cancel the club’s usual fundraisers due to COVID-19 restrictions, the pair decided to look inward for motivation. “We thought it would be good to hold ourselves accountable and raise some money via ‘The Biggest Loser’ competition,” explained Orndorff. From February to the end of April, Zuilkoski and Orndorff engaged in a battle not only designed to see which superintendent could lose the most weight, but also pitting CVSD against PVSD to see which could raise the most funds for an organization of the superintendent’s choosing. Zuilkoski raised funds for Conestoga Valley Christian Community

Services (CVCCS), which provides a food pantry and other services for CVSD residents, and Orndorff chose The Factory Ministries, which provides similar services for PVSD residents. The competition invited potential donors to give a chosen amount per pound, make a one-time donation, or donate food to either CVCCS or The Factory. E-mail blasts and other methods of communication were used to provide weekly weigh-in updates to donors. “We kicked off on Feb. 8 (with the) first weigh-in,” recalled Orndorff, who noted that both he and Zuilkoski submitted photos of their scales until the last weigh-in, which was held in person. Each man set a goal of losing 20 pounds. “We were pretty close (in weight) when we started,” recalled Zuilkoski, who planned to work extra hard to lose during the last few weeks. He noted that being more aware of what he eats and walking regularly, along with an elliptical routine and light weight training, were helping him to lose.

Orndorff, who has participated in group bicycling efforts in the past, said that he has been avoiding eating carbohydrates and has been working out on a treadmill in the Pequea Valley High School fitness center. When April 30 arrived, Orndorff had lost 22 pounds, and Zuilkoski had lost 17. As the loser, Zuilkoski had to wear PVSD spirit wear while walking through schools in his own district. Orndorff was able to donate approximately $3,000 to The Factory Ministries, and Zuilkoski donated about the same amount in funds to CVCCS. In addition to the funds, food was donated. Efforts included Fritz Elementary School’s cereal drive, which had a goal of collecting 400 boxes of cereal, and making a domino line with the cereal boxes in the hallway prior to taking them to CVCCS. “They ended up with 1,027 boxes,” said Zuilkoski. “It probably took three or four minutes for all the boxes to fall.” Approximately 500 other food items were also donated to CVCCS as part of the competition.

In the fall of 2019, Steps to Success founder and executive director Michelle Harbaugh learned that the building where the preschool and day care service was located at 56 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, would be sold. The learning center, which accommodates children from 6 weeks to 13 years of age in a variety of programs, would have to move when the building was auctioned.

Team Jennifer Cahill To Hold First Fundraiser

CONESTOGA VALLEY EDITION

BY ANN MEAD ASH

After disabled United States Air Force veteran Jennifer Cahill was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May of 2020, she was amazed at the number of people who reached out to help her and her husband, Mike, who is also a disabled veteran, with expenses. “I got this diagnosis, and (we) learned we had no burial insurance,” recalled Jennifer. “Some friends took it upon themselves to start fundraisers, and people I don’t know … strangers reached out … even during the pandemic.” The fundraisers were so successful, the Cahills were able to prepay Jennifer’s expenses, and they had money left over. By September of 2020, Jennifer had made up her mind to find a way

The result is Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which will hold its kickoff event on Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the grounds of the Reinholds Fire Station, 138 W. Main St., Reinholds. Spectators are welcome at 8 a.m., with registrations for cars and bikes held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The ride is scheduled to start at noon. Mike noted that the mission of the charity is twofold. First, the group helps preplan and prepay final expenses and arrangements for female veterans who have terminal cancer and do not have life or burial insurance or other resources. He explained that many people believe that veterans are automatically covered for these expenses, but that is not necessarily the case, and many families have to pay significant outof-pocket expenses. “We will offset

Eighth Hope For Haiti Auction Planned The Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction of Northern Lancaster County has been scheduled for Saturday, May 15, at the Hertzog Homestead Event Venue, 470 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. Organizers have planned a day that will include pony rides, food, and an auction. The auction began several years ago when a group of neighbors centered around the common goal of helping those living in poverty to gain education and employment skills to help them become self-sustainable. According to Kristen Hertzog, organizer of the event, the auction will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the last item is sold. Among the many pieces of merchandise that will go up for bids will be handmade quilts in a variety of sizes, lawn and garden supplies, antiques, collectibles, furniture, gift cards, baskets, and donated gently used items. “We are still accepting donations of new items and financial gifts to offset the cost of the auction,” said Hertzog. Food that will be available for purchase will include chicken barbecue, salads, sub sandwiches, toasted cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, baked goods, and homemade doughnuts.

Hertzog noted that extra attention has been paid to safety measures this year. “There’s natural social distancing due to the 23-acre size of the property (where the auction is held),” she explained. “We are taking precautions for safety for both the volunteers and the attendees,” she said, adding that masks are strongly encouraged. All the funds raised at the 2021 event will benefit two organizations that help provide education and business training for Haitian small business owners. Paradigm Shift is the education division of Haiti Transformation, which teaches leadership skills and is led by Nelson and Sue Martin. Hope Library is located in Montrouis, Haiti, a town with a population of about 18,000. The library

offers books in French, Creole, and English and education programs in the area. The library, which is a Christian training center, has more than 1,000 volumes of books. Hertzog said auction organizers would like to help the library get to 5,000 volumes. The auction regularly brings together about 100 volunteers from diverse backgrounds who work to help bring education and business training to the people of Haiti. Hertzog estimated that about 1,000 people attend each year. Readers who would like more information may visit www.hope forhaitibenefit.auction. Hertzog noted that those who cannot attend may donate online via the website. Individuals with questions may call 717-201-4893.

Haitians Helping Haitians Plans Chicken Barbecue BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Haitians Helping Haitians for Christ (HHH) will host its second chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 22. The event will take place at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Presales must be picked up by 1 p.m. To prepurchase chicken, visit http://bit.ly/HaitiansBBQ. The event will be held rain or shine. HHH was founded by Elage and Betty Metzler Estime. Elage grew up in

the Haitian communities of Montrouis and Charrier. He was raised in a Christian family of eight children, who were still young when their father died. Through a sponsorship, Elage attended Mission Possible School, where he became involved with outreach efforts by using his small allowance to purchase bananas and bread for neighborhood children. After attending Youth With A Mission, Elage focused on serving in Haiti. Betty, a Lancaster County native, met Elage in 2010 when she was part of a medical mission team. They married in 2012. HHH from pg 3 Elage’s ministry has grown and has become multifaceted. Initially, the Estimes self-funded the ministry, but a board of directors was formed to assist them and broaden the support. HHH provides food support for local schools, orphanages, and prisons and runs a feeding program for children. The organization offers English and music classes taught by local teachers. HHH holds yearly seminars for pastors, and it helped a local church acquire land and construct a building. During the summers, HHH hosts camps for children. Additionally, the organization brings North American medical teams to conduct clinics. “All the proceeds (from the barbecue) support long-term solutions for Haitians,” stated Betty. “The money all goes directly to providing jobs for Haitians and changing their lives. A dollar goes a certain way here, but in Haiti it goes a long way.” “We want to help people, and we believe the greatest help we can give people is to (help them) find Christ,” said board member Joe Sherer. “The chicken barbecue gives us an opportunity to interact with the community so they can learn who we are and what we do.” “Although our organization is called ‘Haitians Helping Haitians,’ I love helping everybody,” Elage said. Darren Seiverling stands in the Seiverling Museum Car and Pedal Car Museum in Ephrata. The museum is home to 150 pedal cars and three classic cars.

For an adult who remembers the age of pedal cars - from about the 1920s to the 1970s, it is interesting to look for cars similar to those they remember, but some rather fancy automobiles are on display as well. Referencing a 1924 Packard, Darren noted that families that could afford $50 to $100 for a child’s toy in that time period owned the cars. By the 1950s, some pedal cars could be purchased for $15, and middle-class families could afford them. “I consider these the Power Wheels of that time,” said Darren. Darren, who still buys and sells pedal cars, identifies them by searching old pedal car advertisements on the internet. But cars are not the only vehicles represented in the museum. A truck that was specially made for the museum, a bulldozer, and a tandem pedal car that could be pedaled by two children at the same time are also featured, along with several pedal planes and a boat on its own trailer. Currently, the museum is open only by appointment, and groups are limited. There is no admission fee, but per-person donations are appreciated. “We let everybody mosey around at their own pace,” said Darren. Readers who would like more information about the museum may visit www.pedalcarmuseum.com or search for “Seiverling Museum, Car and Pedal Car Museum” on Facebook. Before long, a Steps staffer had connected with Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. At first, negotiations to move into what had been church Sunday school rooms moved slowly due to the COVID-19 shutdown in March of 2020, but by June of that same year, plans to move the day care to the church were well underway. In April 2021, Steps to Success moved in. On April 26, Patti Corll, director of faith foundation for Zion, returned from vacation to the sounds of children giggling in the hallways. “It was so wonderful to walk into this building and hear children this morning,” Corll told Harbaugh. “It is fabulous. When God has everything in a plan, it’s just providence.” The front door of Steps to Success’ new home is on the side of the church as one pulls into the drive. The doorbell plays “Under the Sea” from “The Little Mermaid” when rung. Inside, the halls have been painted navy on the lower half and white at the top to match the foyer of the church. Harbaugh was happy to provide a tour of the 1-year-old room, prekindergarten, the beforeand after- school program room, an office, and a staff room, among others. Steps will also utilize the gym and the kitchen, with meals being served in classrooms. Harbaugh said that all the playground equipment has been moved from the previous location and that the Upper Leacock Fire Company donated time, energy,

and trucks to bring nine tons of mulch to the new playground. Harbaugh noted that the new location within the walls of Zion is fitting with the church’s reputation for being involved in multiple projects that benefit the community. “The church is so community minded, when they heard we needed a home, it seemed like a good fit for everybody,” she said, adding that pastor Karen Larson is one of Steps’ biggest supporters. “Child care - how much more community minded can you get? It just makes sense.” As of the fall of 2020, Steps also offers before- and after-school care at each Conestoga Valley School District elementary school. Readers who would like to know more about Steps to Success may visit www.stepstosuccessinc.com or call 717-656-3363.

Both superintendents have decided to encourage healthy habits for their district staff members. “For our faculty, we have made it part of our healthy awareness program to lose weight,” said Zuilkoski. “If you sign up to lose weight, you get points toward our wellness program.” Orndorff is hoping to repeat the fundraiser in the future. “Next year, we might find a more formalized way of doing it with a percentage of weight loss for 20 people from PVSD and 20 people from CVSD, so it’s not only (the two of) us.”

“This was put together by my great-uncle Richard Seiverling,” said Darren Seiverling, who, along with his family, oversees the museum and gives tours by appointment. Richard, who passed in 2006, began collecting cars - full-size cars - in the mid-1980s. “The building was built in 1991 to house his car collection,” said Darren, noting that between 1991 and 1994, the building was full of classic cars with space to work on some of them. “Around ‘95, he got the first pedal car, and he was so proud,” recalled Darren, pointing out the 1947 tan and orange Pontiac that is still in the museum. “He called us over the first day it came because he was so excited.” The first pedal car was the beginning of a trend that would last the rest of Richard’s life. “It felt like every week, I was putting in a new pedal car,” Darren said. “They came in crates from all over the nation.” According to Darren, Richard liked the color schemes and how small and cute they were. “There’s hardly any maintenance,” he noted, adding that Richard’s love for the cars was evident as he showed them off and told the story of each car. Darren shared that most of the cars in the museum are “original restored,” meaning they were bought brand new by somebody and played with, and they went to the attic before being restored close to original condition. “The restorers in the mid-1990s picked them up and restored them and sent Richard a Polaroid (photo),” said Darren. “If he liked the Polaroid, he sent them a check.” By 1996, Richard wanted to share his enjoyment with others, so he opened the museum and began bringing in small groups for tours. Soon he was running out of room. “At that time, he had a 1927 Chevy coupe, and one day, he said, ‘I am selling the Chevy because I need more room for pedal cars,’” recalled Darren, who was 16 at the time and was shocked by the decision. “(Richard) sold the Chevy and (bought) more pedal cars.”

Lori Stahl of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “We have been around since the mid-1800s.” Stahl noted that at one time the organization changed its name to the Lancaster Honey Producers, but in the early 2000s, it was restored to the original name. “It has always been about beekeepers mentoring new beekeepers and being advocates for the honeybees,” she explained. To help give beginning beekeepers a sweet start, the organization normally holds a one-day workshop in late January or early February. According to Stahl, past events attracted about 100 attendees, with another 100 fledgling beekeepers on a waiting list. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but Stahl said that the organization hopes to hold the 2022 event. Another service the organization offers is swarm retrieval. Swarms occur when a hive divides itself. “The queen and a bunch of the bees

noted Stahl, displaying photos of swarms she retrieved during 2020 on her phone. “A typical traditional swarm looks like a big ball of bees.” The organization’s website www.lancasterbeekeepers.org - provides a list of swarm collectors divided by location. “A swarm may sit there for 20 minutes, two hours, or two days,” said Stahl. “When you see a swarm, you want to get a beekeeper there as fast as you can.” Stahl said that beekeepers use a special bee box that smells familiar to bees with an entrance that can be made smaller and even closed to capture bees. The website also offers informational documents under the “Members” tab, including an article on designing a garden for pollinators. Stahl recommends that gardeners plant flowers that bloom in February, March, early April, August, September, October, and November. “When it’s the end of April, bees can find nectar and pollen everywhere,”

Discovering The Healing Arts At PCA&D

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

May 15, 2021

Four years ago, Richard Price; his sons, Jacob and Jordan; and their families established the Cynthia E. Price Scholarship for the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D). The scholarship was created to honor Richard’s late wife, artist and craftswoman Cynthia, and to financially assist students determined to improve the world around them through their artwork. The Cynthia E. Price Scholarship served as a catalyst for PCA&D to figure out how a program in the healing arts could bring the community together.

The president of PCA&D, Michael Molla, created a new strategic plan concentrating on external relationships that would enable PCA&D to work in conjunction with organizations and institutions around Lancaster County. PCA&D applied for and was awarded a Passion Grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation. “This grant gave us the ability to host an artist in residence and form an advisory committee beyond PCA&D to oversee the Healing Arts program,” explained Todd Snovel, special assistant to the president and director of strategic initiatives and develop-

ment at PCA&D. The college did not have to look far for an artist to fill the residency. PCA&D was preparing to distribute a press release when Jennifer Quigley made a cold call to the college. “We scheduled an interview with her to hear about her background, vision, and passion for the healing arts, and from that, it was clear we found our artist in residence,” said Snovel. Quigley’s expertise is not simply art therapy, but expressive arts therapy. It’s a process that incorporates numerous creative approaches such as music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, play therapy, and more, which are blended to fit the needs of the client. The Healing Arts program launched in January at PCA&D. “We’ve received a great response from the Advisory Committee,” noted Deborah Barber, director of the institute for leadership, creative entrepreneurship, and innovation at PCA&D. “We have a diverse Advisory

Committee with members from the local, state, and national arts, education, and health care communities.” PCA&D’s Healing Arts program offers new pathways and opportunities for students to explore connections between art, community, and medicine. Students now have access to someone working in the field who can mentor them and help build their portfolios. As for the community, the Healing Arts program is another way for PCA&D to get involved with a variety of organizations in Lancaster County. When the program was in the works, the COVID-19 pandemic was not on the college’s radar. “This program took off at a time when the entire world was figuring out how to think about what they experienced and the resilience they demonstrated during the pandemic, and a program like this helps them answer these questions,” noted Snovel. PCA&D made it a mission to ensure that everyone would have access to the program. On Friday, June 4, there will be an outdoor exhibition displaying the work of students involved with the Healing Arts program. “In many ways, the exhibition will pay tribute to a wide perspective of diverse individuals so that anyone living and working in Lancaster County can connect to this program,” explained Snovel. Those interested in sponsoring the Healing Arts program may email Snovel at snovel@pcad.edu or call 717-396-7833, ext. 1010.

and teammate Destiny Ellerbe earned second in both the shot put and the discus. Maya Longhi pulled in more CV points with a second-place pole vault and a pair of third place efforts in long and triple jump. Gabby Bamungwa took second in the long jump. “The growth of the team mentally, emotionally, physically has had a significant impact,” reflected girls’ coach Courtney Thomas. “Each person over time has become more confident.” Only two tenths of a second separated the top three in the boys’ 100 meter dash, with CV’s Owen Linder placing first with an 11.3, a Township sprinter took second 11.4, and CV’s Nicholas Tran took third with 11.5. Both Linder and Tran ran a leg of the winning 4x100 relay (43.9), joined by Tarius Jackson and Joshua Rennekamp. Emmanuel Gitonga crossed first in the 800, and Jackson placed first in long jump and second in the triple jump. Loago Snavely took a pair of second place honors in the hurdle events, and Zachary Stoudt was second in the high jump. TENNIS Six CV tennis players earned the opportunity to compete in the LL League post-season tournament, with senior Nolan High advancing the furthest into the tournament, reaching the quarterfinals in Flight Two singles held on May 1st. High, who finished the regular season with a record of 9-6 began his post-season journey with a first round victory over his Cocalico opponent (64, 6-4), leading to a clash against Garrett Muraika of Cedar Crest in which High fell 6-3, 6-1. Joining High in singles play was Yuji Wenger, Luke Taylor, and Grady Ray. All four athletes also qualified for doubles competition, joined by Henry McQuate Krahnke and Jason Schlegelmilch, and while they experienced early round losses, each duo represented the Bucks with excellent play and sportsmanship. The squad will say farewell to five seniors, Luke Taylor, Nolan High, Parker McGaulley, Cooper Tardibuono, and Joseph Williams, all of whom contributed to the success and leadership of this season. “Our seniors will be hard to replace,” commented head coach Dale Gregg, crediting the group for their leadership, stability, and skill. Extending their impact beyond the courts, CV tennis has embarked on a community service project collecting and recycling old tennis balls. Having already double their initial 1k ball goal, the team will pass the torch to the girls’ tennis team to continue the effort in the fall. SOFTBALL A late game rally from Solanco led to a 18-8 loss to the Mules on May 3rd. CV held a 4-1 advantage after three innings, but the Mules started hitting in the fourth driving home seven runs in the frame. CV gathered nine hits in the contest, led at the plate by Lexi Weitzel with three hits, including a solo homer in the first inning.

Olivia Mellinger and Lane Castagna each supplied a pair of hits, while Becca Hartranft, Kyle Metzler, and Lane Castagna each had two RBIs. Rhiannon Henry took the loss in the circle, striking out three batters during her three and a third innings of work. A limited number of tickets for the in-person performances are available to the public. COVID-19 policies that will be in place include limiting the audience capacity to allow for social distancing and wearing face coverings at all times, per state health guidelines. Hoover is a Lancaster-based composer with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music theory and composition from West Chester University. “Prodigal” is the first fulllength musical he has created. The musical is loosely based on the parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15. Hoover said he was looking to find a familiar story that could be retold in an innovative way. The presentation features a cast of 23 local performers, led by Robert Bigley, Zachary Fernback, Caleb Hughes, and Reji Woods in featured roles. The presentations will also include a question-andanswer and talk-back session with Hoover, director Wally Calderon, and cast members after each performance. All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices, and tickets for both the in-person performances and online streaming must be reserved in advance by visiting www.servantstage.org or by calling 717-455-0255.
