Almost Like Being There PA Family Travel Fair Goes Virtual By Ann Mead Ash
When Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the third PA Family Travel Fair, realized that the 2020 fair, which was scheduled for April 18, would have to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the
fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. The virtual fair can be accessed at www.whereandwhen.com/ virtual-pa-family-travel-fair or by using the QR code found with this article. Where & When Pennsylvania may also be found by searching for “Where & When Pennsylvania” on Facebook or at @whereandwhenpa on Instagram. “Every day, we will feature a different exhibitor,” said Royal. “Each one of them will take over our social media for a day.” The See PA Family Travel Fair pg 7

Bryanna Still has always loved music. “I began my interest in music at a really young age,” said Bryanna. “I grew up listening to soulful old rhythm and blues and a lot of ’70s and ’80s music. Having that start really inspired me to be passionate about music.” In the fall, the Dayspring Christian Academy senior will head to Edinboro University in northern Pennsylvania to begin a double major in art and music therapy, an ambitious eight-year program that will earn her a doctorate in those subject areas. Bryanna’s journey to this point has not been likely, but her talents, love of art and music, and determination to succeed have helped her discover her potential and have influenced others, such as Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), to See SWAN pg 4

“Star Wars” Fans Feed Homeless In Lancaster
By Ann Mead Ash
By Ann Mead Ash
Kaden Stetler of Lancaster, one of the founders of Rebel Cause, an organization that began feeding homeless people in Lancaster on March 19, credits “Star Wars” with the inspiration behind the group’s mission. “‘Star Wars’ has always been my inner mythology,” explained Stetler. “It’s about helping others and hope and inspiring other people to do the right thing.” Rebel Cause, a group made up of about 15 members living in the Lancaster area and beyond, was founded in 2015 with a dedication to uniting “Star

In early April, when Larry Stoner, Region 1 operations coordinator with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), 583 Airport Road, Lititz, learned that Bird-in-Hand Fabric, owned by Sylvan and Loraine Stoltzfus, had been creating masks for anyone who
requested one in response to the COVID-19 crisis, he was moved to involve MDS to help. “They had been making them for about two weeks out of the kindness of their hearts, and they were giving fabric and getting elastic and (wire) for the nose (to others who were making them),” Stoner explained. Looking Forward to Serving You When We Re-Open!
The 2020 New Holland Memorial Day Pilgrimage has been canceled. The Pilgrimage and the ceremony at the New Holland Park were canceled by the United Veterans Council of New Holland because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Considering the large turnouts the event has had at the cemeteries in past years, organizers did not feel the required 6-foot social distancing could be maintained at the event. The members of the United Veterans Council of New Holland are acting with concern for the well-being of the VFW members, New Holland Legion members, New Holland Band members, Boy Scouts and spectators. The Veterans Council has offered to provide flowers to the 13 cemeteries that are usually visited during the Pilgrimage. The flowers will be placed on veterans’ graves. The Bowmansville, Bridgeville, Groffdale, Ranck’s, St. John’s, St. Stephen,
Voganville and Zeltenreich cemeteries have confirmed they will receive flowers and place them on veterans’ graves. The Trinity cemetery has elected not to receive flowers this year, and those flowers will be available for pickup on Saturday, May 23, from noon to 2 p.m. at the New Holland American Legion, 35 S. Hoover Ave., by family members who would like to place a flower on the grave of a family veteran. Information about the availability of flowers at Cedar Grove, Evangelical, Terre Hill and Weaverland cemeteries is forthcoming. The United Veterans Council encourages all Americans to honor veterans by displaying the American flag on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, at their homes. The public is invited to attend next year’s Pilgrimage on Monday, May 31, 2021. For more information, readers may contact Michael Martin at m_martin67@comcast.net.

Wars” fans and doing good in the community. The Rebel Cause mission statement reads in part, “We are committed to helping the homeless in Lancaster County with dignity and compassion.” Until recently, Rebel Cause aided local members of the homeless community with regular events. “We sponsored community meals on the weekends and held fundraisers for needs of the homeless community,” said Stetler. “We would use whatever space was available to us, including churches and community centers.” When Gov. Tom Wolf announced that all non-essential businesses would be closed, Stetler found himself out of work. “I knew Rebel Cause was in a position to do something (for the homeless),” said Stetler. “We started the very next day making food and handing it out to the homeless, and through that I became officially connected with the city to use one area to serve meals.” Rebel Cause volunteers hand out dinners each evening of the week, including weekends, at 6:30 p.m. from the sidewalk on the Beaver Street side of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which is located at 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster. Food for the meals is donated by a large number of area contributors. The dinners are cooked at Rumplebrewskin’s, located at 834 N. Plum St. in Lancaster, a restaurant that has been closed by the COVID-19
restrictions. According to Stetler, about five volunteers arrive at the restaurant daily around 2 p.m. to start cooking. “ We package meals at 5:30 and head to St. Mary’s around 6 p.m.,” reported Stetler. Since the group members began providing meals, they have given out an average of 700 to 1,000 meals weekly. In addition to handing out meals, Rebel Cause has opened a day center at Crossroads Mennonite Church at 401 Church St., Lancaster. The day center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The center offers coffee, snacks, movies, books, art classes and art therapy, yoga classes, and live music. “We have a 20-person limit, and we are close to full each day,” Stetler said. Stetler noted that about 20 volunteers per day take part in the efforts to hand out meals and run the day center. To promote safety and comply with Pennsylvania COVID-19 recommendations, volunteers wear masks reminiscent of “Star Wars” characters and also hand them out to those who need them. The masks are made by MADS Enterprises in Lancaster, and Stetler reported that about 300 masks had been given away by mid-April. Readers who would like to know more about Rebel Cause may visit http://rebelcauselancaster.com or search for “Rebel Cause Lancaster” on Facebook.
Suicide Prevention Event Posted The Lancaster County Suicide Provention Coalition will meet on Thursday, May 28, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Blair Room at the Community Services Building, 630 Janet Ave., Lancaster. Mental Health America of Lancaster County educators Lois Walters and Dennis Walters will present “How to Balance Caring for Our Wounded While Caring for Ourselves.” To learn more about the Walterses and their presentation, readers may visit www.stopsuicidelancaster.org/
awareness-and-events/. The training will help attendees identify warning signs of suicide as well as address simple methods of communicating to hurting individuals and de-escalating heated situations. Additionally, crisis situations or critical incidents can occur within the church, requiring a plan of action to handle such situations. Steps toward selfcare and resiliency will be emphasized along with a review of community resources. Also, attendees will be encouraged to
share their concerns with a panel of experts in the suicide prevention field. The presentation will cater to church pastors, clergy and staff for crisis management of potential critical situations in the church; however, anyone who experiences frequent demands for support and services is welcome to attend. Registration is appreciated but not required. To register, readers may email cleckow@mhalancaster.org by Thursday, May 21.

Together, we can save lives. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together. started taking violin lessons and participating in rhythm classes through SWAN. After completing a SWAN event at DoubleTree by Hilton Resort in Willow Street in 2013, Bryanna was waiting for her ride and singing along to “No Oneâ€? by Alicia Keys as it played over the lobby speaker. According to Bryanna, Vuolo heard the singing and was impressed. “Diana came over and said, ‘ We’re getting you (voice) lessons.’ That’s what started my singing career,â€? said Bryanna. Vuolo recognized Bryanna’s intelligence as well as her talent, and SWAN helped to secure a scholarship for her to attend Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville. Vuolo recalled that Bryanna’s grandmother, with whom she had been living, died in 2013 shortly before Bryanna was scheduled to sing the national anthem on the pitcher’s mound of the Barnstormers’ home stadium. The 11-year-old bravely completed the task and six months later soloed with the Dayspring Honors Choir in front of 2,500 people at the school’s Remember America Speaker Series event featuring Dr. Ben Carson. In the summer of 2018, SWAN held a summer camp, which provided 120 hours of instruction to local children. Bryanna was looking for a productive way to spend her summer, and she became a camp volunteer, assisting the
The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) reminds state residents that its ChildLine, a 24/7 hotline for reporting concerns of child abuse or neglect, is still fully operational and available at 800-932-0313 for Pennsylvanians seeking to report potential cases of child abuse or neglect. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and as scheduled recognition activities and regular life have shifted due to COVID-19, DHS and child welfare advocates implore all Pennsylvanians to learn signs of potential abuse or neglect and, if they suspect abuse, make the call to ChildLine. As the public navigates this public health crisis and the necessary disruptions, it is important to not lose sight of the obligation to keep children safe and prevent child abuse. Whether it is a neighbor, family member, or community member encountered in a store or elsewhere, if someone suspects something is wrong, anyone can call ChildLine and make a report.
teachers. After the SWAN camp ended, the teachers she had worked with suggested she be hired as a teacher for the SWAN team, and she began leading group lessons at Price and Lafayette elementary schools. Vuolo noted that the teachers were acutely aware of Bryanna’s character and skill. “Her ability to work with traumatized children and their behavioral and scholastic failures convinced me she will indeed be a great music and art therapist someday, said Vuolo. Bryanna credits her father, Clifford Still, with helping her to develop her interest in art. Clifford was incarcerated most of Bryanna’s life, and he is now deceased. “My dad would send me letters with drawings, or he would ask me to draw something and send it back. That is how I connected with my father, Bryanna recalled. “I couldn’t sing to my dad, but I could draw for him, and I wanted to practice my art and get better at it. I wanted my art to be an expression of who I was and to really echo my goals in life.
Bryanna Still of Lancaster, a senior at Dayspring Christian Academy, plans to use her musical and artistic talents to help others as she matriculates at Edinboro University in the fall with the goal of becoming an art and music therapist. Looking ahead, Vuolo believes Bryanna’s past will affect her future in positive ways. “She is a woman of faith and has chosen to ‌ direct the pain of her life to help others,â€? Vuolo said. “I have witnessed her tremendous successes such as the many times that she has stepped up ... front of audiences to not only perform, but to be an ambassador and spokesperson for the many children affected by parental incarceration and trauma. Her love for others fuels that bravery.â€?

take notice. SWAN is an afterschool music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org. While it was not always easy for Bryanna to incorporate music into her life, she found ways to exercise her passion. “When I got the opportunity (I took) music in school,â€? recalled Bryanna, who listed violin, viola, and recorder among her first instruments. “(When there was) anything to do with hands-on music or singing or performing (offered), I was the first to sign up,â€? she said. Bryanna attended Price Elementary in SDoL for kindergarten and then moved to Washington Elementary for first grade, where she started playing violin. But from third through fifth grades, Bryanna did not stay in one place for long. “I bounced around in schools. I couldn’t invest myself in a music class, but I started getting instruments of my own,â€? she recalled, noting that her neighbors on Green Street in Lancaster offered her old instruments to try or practice on. first organization to take over Where & When’s social media was the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, which is spotlighting a giveaway in conjunction with the fair consisting of a weekend kayaking getaway for four. “The package includes two nights lodging, a kayaking trip, and $200 toward meals,” said Royal, who noted that a basket of Endless Mountains products will be included. Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. Lining up to take over the Where & When social media are a mix of visitors’ bureaus, historic attractions, amusement parks, museums, and all-inclusive resorts. Among them are the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash, and Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. Fort Roberdeau in Altoona will also have a day manning the social media accounts. Virtual tours of areas will be available on some days as well. “We have 18 different destination marketing organizations involved,” noted Royal. “Some of those will include virtual tour links for their areas.” Among the destination marketing areas that will be part of the virtual fair are the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau and The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. One of the exciting aspects of the travel fair is that the exhibitors bring information about interesting and beautiful parts of Pennsylvania to those who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get away to open spaces,” noted Royal. “Worlds End State Park

(in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County, there are beautiful vistas.” Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages,” Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).”

Stoner is recruiting members of the Plain community to help with the mask effort, and he has also been spreading information about COVID-19 best practices. “We are trying to get the word out about wearing masks, social distancing, and washing of hands … to take this seriously,” he said.
