Club Sandwich - CVCCS To Provide Lunches BY ANN MEAD ASH
ccording to Johnathan Barrett, executive director of Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Summer Lunch Club program the organization oversees annually in the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) runs like a “well-oiled machine.” The program, under the direction of coordinator Emma Arnold, provides lunches for children to enjoy on-site or take home. It operates at four locations on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CVCCS administers the program by working with partner churches, which each host a lunch site. Breakout Ministries holds the club at its place of worship in Leola, and Faith Church oversees the Flory Park site, with Lancaster Alliance Church delivering lunches to a location at Country Club Apartments and Worship Center hosting the West Earl Community Park lunch club. Meals will be available

CVCCS administers the program by working with partner churches, which each host a lunch site. Efforts have included adding a special Summer Lunch Club graphic to CVCCS’ home page at http://cvccs.org. Clicking on the graphic offers the option of donating a specific number of meals to the cause. “People have been very generous,” said Barrett, who added that he has seen donors share the link to social media.
Barrett explained that meals are designated first for CVSD students age 18 and under. “Parents are very important to us, too,” said Barrett, noting that once all students at a site have received lunches, meals may be distributed to parents. “ We always send extras,” said Barrett, who noted that peanut butter and jelly is sent to each club location and that site supervisors count the number of lunches distributed for food planning and preparation purposes. For 2022, Barrett created a new logo for the club featuring a graphic of the sun and a playground swing. “It now has an inviting image,” he said, noting that the name Summer Lunch Club was chosen for its friendly appeal to children.

Back The Blue Supports Local Police BY ANN MEAD ASH
Nearly two years ago, in 2020, Sue Esh of Gordonville received permission to organize an Adopt-ACop program for the Lancaster Police Department. Tina Edgell in Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) noticed a post about the program on Facebook. In response, Edgell went to work setting up a similar program for the East Lampeter Township and West Earl police officers. See Back The Blue pg 3
Servant Stage is preparing to present “Newsies” featuring a cast of local teens.
Servant Stage, a nonprofit theater serving Lancaster County, will produce “Newsies.” The Tony-award winning Disney musical, based on the 1992 motion picture, was inspired by a true story. The show features a score by Alan Menken, dancing, and a focus on the message to fight for what is right. Producers have gathered a cast of more than 40 local performers, working with a 10-piece orchestra, in an energetic and family-friendly show that audience members of all ages may enjoy. beginning Monday, June 13, through Thursday, Aug. 11. Because the program is no longer government-funded, Barrett is working to raise the funds needed to cover the cost of meals, which run about $5 each. Barrett has raised enough to cover nearly 900 of the approximately 1,500 meals distributed each summer.

Back The Blue from pg 1 cide with holidays, such as giving patriotic-themed items around July 4 and bringing individual meals from Funck’s restaurant to officers who worked on Thanksgiving. In early April, pizzas from Slugger’s Pizzeria in Lancaster were delivered. Officers were treated to whoopie pies as well. Currently, the group serves 40 officers in the two departments. Looking ahead, the organizers said they would like to see more group efforts, such as a monthly sandwich delivery. Edgell reported that she shares the officers’ responses on the group’s Face-
book page. “I try to share how thankful they are,” she said. “Tina and I love the community and the people in it,” said Butler. “We want to serve and give back because they serve us.”

Edgell approached her friend Heather Butler for help because the two had previously worked together on projects in the CV area. “I said, ‘I am in,’” recalled Butler. After Butler agreed to help, Edgell contacted Lampeter Township Police Chief Stephen Zerbe for approval and a list of his officers’ names. Edgell created a Facebook group named “Back the Blue, Adopt A Cop East Lampeter PD.” “We had such an amazing response when we first started,” said Butler, who noted that many officers were adopted by more than one family. Edgell explained that the group asks those who adopt officers to fulfill a few requirements. “First of all, we ask them to pray for (officers) … for (officers’) families, and for protection for (officers),” said Edgell. Those who adopted officers were also encouraged to provide gifts, cards, books, and other items of encouragement and blessing. Both Butler and Edgell recalled that during the early days, a meal program coincided with the search for missing murder victim Linda Stoltzfoos. “The (officers) were working 14- to 16-hour days,” noted Butler. “It worked out perfectly,” added Edgell, who said there was plenty of food for local officers and visiting FBI agents. Since that time, the group has organized efforts to coin-

“Catch The Spirit” At Summer Music Camp Grace Community Church of Willow Street will offer a summer music camp as part of its Outpour Kids program. The weeklong camp, set for Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., will serve children entering first through eighth grades. Children of all experience and ability levels are welcome. “It’s kind of like secular musical theater camp meets VBS (vacation Bible school),” said Katie Wieand, director of Outpour Kids and the children’s music ministry and administrative coordinator for Grace Community Church. “We’re able to help all of them at their
different levels grow in their abilities.” The camp will include devotionals, outdoor games, crafts and music. Students will prepare for the performance of a baseball-themed musical titled “Sermon on the Mound! - Catch the Spirit.” All children in the camp will participate in the musical, but for those wishing to perform special solos or speaking parts, there will be advance auditions on Sunday, June 5. Performers will be asked to learn their parts before the start of camp. “Our goal is to build their confidence, musical abilities and stage presence while gaining a knowledge and love for Jesus Christ,” said Wieand. The entire community is invited to attend the free performance of the musical on July 22 at 7 p.m. at the church.
The summer camp will culminate in a musical performance.
In addition, Wieand announced, the Lancaster Barnstormers have invited the Outpour Kids summer campers to perform “God Bless America” before the Friday, Aug. 5, home game against the Staten Island Ferry Hawks. This is the second year that Wieand has led the summer music camp. She has a Master of Music in opera performance from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and a

Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Belmont University. She has toured internationally, performing operatic and musical theater roles in addition to performing locally at the Fulton Theatre and at Sight & Sound Theatre. Wieand pointed out that the Outpour Kids program is offered year-round. In the fall, there is an eight-week Thursday night worship choir, as well as a winter program. “The last worship choir had 80 singers from 24 different church homes,” Wieand said. “It was really giving them an opportunity to grow their talents and take them back and use them in their own church. They come from all over the community. It’s to equip children who have a love for the Lord to use their gifts.” See Music Camp pg 5

Buckskins Triumph Over Lebanon, 8-2

traveled to Ephrata for a tangle with the first place Mountaineers. The result was a 10-0 loss with Connor Esbenshade taking the hit. He allowed six runs on four hits and four walks before giving way to Preston Fisher and Tucker Hastings. That pair covered the last two-plus innings, and the last four Ephrata runs. SOFTBALL The softball team posted the same 1-1 mark with a loss opposite Ephrata and a win over Lebanon. That also put the Lady Buckskins at 7-11 on the year with the postseason a long shot. Conestoga Valley needed just three innings to dispatch Lebanon on the 9th, using a 10-run third to finish off a 16-0 final. Rhiannon Henry was the star, picking up the win for her work in the circle while also belting out three hits and collecting three RBI. Her big bop was a

May 5th brought Ephrata to town with the Lady Mountaineers posting a 10-3 win. Henry took the loss despite 13 strikeouts thanks to seven CV errors leading to nine unearned runs. Henry also picked up two hits and two RBI for her work at the plate. Alexa Freeburn added a seventh inning RBI to finish the scoring. VOLLEYBALL As the sun sets on the boys’ volleyball season it appears like the Buckskins will fall short of the postseason. CV sits at 7-8 overall or a few spots outside the District 3-3A field while their 6-5 Section One mark has them in third, also outside the L-L playoff field. Conestoga Valley did pick up a 31 win over fourth place Cedar Crest on May 5th with a 25-19 setback in game three keeping the ‘Bucks from a sweep. CV opened with wins of 25-19 and 25-21 before the Falcons stole game three. CV rebounded with a 25-23 match clinching win in game four. Kenji Pha posted a 36

Conestoga Valley was able to find their offense on the 9th but was unable to stop Central York, falling by a 15-13 final. The Lady Buckskins pushed for a second half comeback but the 10-4 first half hole was too much to overcome. Danae Ulrich stepped to the forefront with four scores while Jordyn Hironimus added three. Malles and Culbert each netted two scores while Caroline Kulp and Mikyla Rineer split the remaining two. Handwerger finished with eight saves. TRACK The track teams had their final post-season tune-up on May 9th, battling Hempfield in the regular season finale. The Lady Buckskins enjoyed a 91-58 win while the boy’s dropped a narrow one, 80-70. Christiana Uzoije and Isabella Johnson both collected two wins while CV swept all three relay races. Johnson claimed the 100m and 200m while Uzoije did the same in the shot put and discus.
Johnson also took part in the 400m and 1600m relays as did Alondra Ortiz. Hallie Schnapf and Mae Lindor completed the 400m relay while Grace Lapp and Kylynn Frankford did the same for the 1600m relay. Frankford also took part in the 3200m relay win while adding a solo 800m victory. Sage Haldeman, Bella Alston, and Meagan Kime finished the 3200m relay. Lapp added a 300H win to her relay work while Jessica Koenig finished the hurdle sweep with a win in the 100H. Brooke Denlinger (400m) and Seana Dougherty (3200m) picked up the final two wins. On the boy’s side, Nick Tran was the lone multiple event winner, taking the 100m and 200m. Zach Phy went solo for a 300H win while joining Carson Miller, Joey Castronova and Emmanuel Gitonga for a 1600m relay win. Ben Eberly took the 110H for a hurdle sweep while Timothy Gitonga posted the final win on the track in the 3200m. CV posted three wins in the field with Thomas Ripson (shot put), Aidan Zimmerman (discus) and Cameron Swinton (triple jump) collecting those wins.
