Summer Of Good News BY ANN MEAD ASH

“We reach more children in the summer than during the school year because each week we are in a different location,” said Nadine Welk, children’s ministry specialist coordinator with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), perhaps best known for the Good News Clubs the organization runs after school. Over the summer, CEF organizes Five-Day Clubs, vacation Bible school (VBS) programs, and Good News Camps. This year, summer programs will be held at 17 locations in Lancaster County. Welk explained that the basic ministry curriculum is the same for all programs, which begin with a 90-minute activity period including large group game time, welcome and prayer, a Word Up period with a catchy phrase concerning the main lesson, Bible verses and songs, a Bible lesson, a review, and closing games. FiveDay Clubs, which use the 90minute basic format, are held in host homes. For the summer of 2022, host homes have been See Good News pg 7

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

To Honor And Remember BY ANN MEAD ASH

“By Memorial Day every (veteran’s) grave should have a flag,” said Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) board member Lin Pickel. Pickel, with help from fellow trustees Tim and Donna Bills, Nancy George, and Bob and Barb Zook, makes sure deceased veterans who are interred in the Conestoga Valley area are honored and remembered on the May holiday each year. A few weeks prior to the

placement activities, Pickel picks up the 450 American flags she orders for the graves at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center in Manheim. During COVID-19 restrictions, distributors at the center employed a production-line system, lining up vehicles and placing flags in trunks and hatchbacks to keep the pickup safe. Pickel noted that the streamlined process worked so efficiently that it is still in place. Once the flags are in hand, the ULTWMA members take them to designated cemeteries to be placed.

Pickel places 170 flags at the Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church with help from her grandchildren and neighbors. George oversees the work at the Zion Lutheran Church cemetery and Trumbauer Memorial Cemetery with help from members of local Boy and Girl Scout troops. The Bills place flags at Eby’s Cemetery at Monterey Chapel and the cemetery at Stumptown Mennonite Church. The Zooks, with help from their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, place flags at the Bareville Union Cemetery on Brethren

Church Road. The Zooks have made the task a family ritual, and their grandchildren, Gavin and Joelle, who are now teenagers, have been helping to place flags since they were toddlers. ULTWMA is a nonprofit, volunteer organization located at 54 W. Main St., Leola. ULTWMA organizes and hosts community events that honor the military service of all local residents. Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod, a performing arts school located in New Holland, likes to point out that one of the organization’s missions is to value the Godgiven gifts in each person and then to work to develop those gifts under Cavod’s goal to “Create With Purpose.” Those concepts will be on display when Cavod holds its annual spring dance concert at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Calvin and Janet High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, June 16, and Friday, June 17, at 7 p.m. each evening. “It’s a representation of all we do,” said Dienner, noting that the presentation spans two nights in order to accommodate the 350 students, age 3 through adult, who will take part. “The concert is a celebration of what they have accomplished throughout the year.” Dienner noted that performances in the genres of tap, ballet, modern, jazz, worship Cavod Academy will hold its yearly dance concert on two dance, hip-hop, and creative consecutive nights at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Calvin movement will be featured and Janet High Fine Arts Center. under professional lighting with bright and colorful cosCONESTOGA VALLEY EDITION tumes. Track Teams Compete in L-L League Meet

BY ERIC PYLES

If you are familiar with the high school track and field calendar you know that May brings postseason meets to the forefront. For Conestoga Valley that all starts with a trip to Hempfield for the L-L Championship Meet, held this year on May 13th and 14th. Both sides of the Buckskin contingent finished the twoday affair in 12th place although the boy’s team did have to share their honor with Solanco and Elizabethtown as all three teams finished with 19 team points. Grace Lapp and Emmanuel Gitonga enjoyed silver medal performances with Lapp nabbing her second-place finish in the 300H and Gitonga the 800m. Gitonga also helped the boy’s 1600m relay team finish fourth with help from Zach Phy, Carson Miller, and Joey Castronova. Hallie Schnapf, Isabelle Johnson, Alondra Ortiz, and Mae Linder collected the lone

relay medal for the Lady Buckskins, taking fifth in the 4x100. Jess Koenig matched that fifth place with her work in the 100H while Brooke Denlinger ended up in seventh, a few steps off her teammate’s pace. During their week at camp, they will learn the program and be evaluated on each part that they teach. “So it is older kids teaching younger about Jesus,” said Welk. Space is limited in the camps, and registration for each program is required one week before the program starts. Division of Smoker’s Butchering

The American Revolutionary War, which lasted from 1775 to 1783, was the war by which North America’s 13 colonies won political independence from Great Britain. Ten years after sailing from Ireland to Pennsylvania, Edward Hand joined the Continental Army in 1775 - one year after he moved to Lancaster to practice medicine. Gen. Hand became commanding officer of the First Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment and played a critical role at the Siege of Boston, the Battle of New York, and the First and Second Battles of Trenton. Following the war, Hand returned to Lancaster, where he became involved in politics. He and his family moved to Rock Ford in 1794. Located along the banks of the Conestoga River at 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, Hand’s house became a historic house museum in 1958 after the Rock Ford Foundation was established. Once restorations to the property were completed, the house opened to the public in 1960. Although the current barn on the property is not original, it is situated where Hand’s barn once stood. After more than three years of planning and designing, the John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lan-

caster County Decorative Arts opened on the second floor of the barn in the spring of 2021. From Wednesday, June 1, to Sunday, Oct. 30, the gallery will host a new exhibit titled “Long Rifles of the American Revolution: How Lancaster County Craftsmen Helped Win the War.” Guestcurated by Pennsylvania long-rifle authority John Kolar, the exhibit will include approximately 35 Revolutionary War-era rifles from the collection of Historic Rock Ford as well as loaned rifles and related accoutrements from museums and private collectors from across the nation. “ We’re getting a lot of objects from private donors and other museums, and some of those items have never really been on public display before, so I’m kind of blown away that we have a variety of people lending different things,” stated curator Sarah Alberico. Two significant items that will be featured in the exhibit will be loaned from the National Museum of the United States Army: the Thomas Tileston 1773 rifle as well as the 1776 seal of the 1st Continental Regiment. Hand’s signature is on the only known surviving document bearing the original imprint from the seal. See Rock Ford pg 11

Rock Ford from pg 10 “ We want it to be an exhibit that would appeal to long-rifle aficionados and to the general public and people with an interest in history,” said executive director Samuel C. Slaymaker III. The exhibit will entail far more than a display of Revolutionary War weaponry; rather, it will be presented in a narrative format to tell the story of how Lancaster County and its rifle makers played a pivotal role in supplying American rifle regi-

ments with weapons that provided the accuracy and flexibility to successfully overturn the British. This will be the first occasion that these objects have been brought together in a single exhibition, accented by storyboards, maps, and illustrations from the work of renowned military history artist Don Troiani. For more information, contact Slaymaker at Director @HistoricRockFord.org or Alberico at Curator@Historic RockFord.org.

Dana Ferber placed first in the Ephrata Cloister Toastmasters Club’s portion of the annual International Speech Contest. In her speech, Ferber shared memories of singing her children to sleep with the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and related the song’s history. Bill Rhoat placed second with his speech based on “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson. Rhoat explained how he has applied the book’s message to his life to help him stop fearing what lies ahead in order to thrive in times of change and uncertainty. Founded in 1924, Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that seeks to empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders.

The Ephrata club is one of a worldwide network of more than 15,800 Toastmasters clubs in 149 countries with a total membership that exceeds 300,000. Each year, members compete worldwide in speech contests. Through competition in the area, division, district and semifinal levels, contestants vie for the title of World Champion of Public Speaking. The Ephrata Cloister Toastmasters Club holds hybrid meetings every second and fourth Monday at 6:30 p.m. at DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. Main St., Ephrata, and virtually via Zoom. Interested individuals may attend a complimentary introductory meeting in person or online. For more information, call 717-715-9234.
