Although the 2020 Occupational Development Center (ODC) Food Truck Fest at Stauffer Park had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC, remembers the 2019 event vividly. “We did well,” recalled Mueller. “More than 3,000 people (attended), and many trucks sold out of food. We had perfect weather, and everything fell into place.” See ODC pg 5

When Akron resident Jeff Musser was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1999 at the age of 42, doctors prescribed several months of chemotherapy with the possibility of a bone marrow transplant following remission. “At that time, insurance didn’t cover bone marrow transplants,” recalled Musser. “A bunch of my friends got together, and they Jeff Musser’s experience with cancer inspired him to help families of children battling the disease.

run the race and can submit their times for a chance to win awards. Organizers will email the winners once they have been determined. Tshirts will be included in registration, which is currently open. This will be the fourth year that proceeds benefit Lancaster Central Market. When asked why people should participate in the race, Dani Decker, communications manager at Central Market, said, “Because it allows Central Market to continue operating and to continue to be a source of fresh food for Lancaster city and the surrounding counties.” Although there are for profit businesses within the market, Central Market is run by a nonprofit. Events such as Red Rose Run help Central Market with outreach, employing staff, and maintaining the building. Although the race was
different last year, the proceeds still made a huge impact on Central Market. “It was so important because we used the money to purchase hand sanitizer stations, provide masks to everyone who walked through the doors, and do thorough cleanings,” explained Decker LOOP strives to make Red Rose Run better than the year before. This year, LOOP put together six different course options for those local to Lancaster. “Since the race is virtual, you can run it anywhere, but we put together these options to help guide people,” said Annie Weeks, director of LOOP. “It’s been a hard year for so many people, and this is a chance for everyone to do something together from all around the world. This is a city celebration. We’re celebrating community and we’re celebrating health.”

Mueller added that he is careful not to duplicate a type of food. ODC has partnered with a coffee company to create their own brand, and they will sell coffee at the fest. Local radio personality Dennis Mitchell will provide musical entertainment at the event. “People are less likely to crowd around a (disc jockey) than a band,” said Mueller. “We want to be careful.” Prizes and giveaways will be part of the event, and this year, a mobile automated teller machine will be located on site. In addition, the Lancaster SPCA will bring dogs that are available for adoption to the fest. ODC, located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. During 2020, Mueller said, the organization shut its doors from March 13 until Sept. 14, opening on a smaller scale until close to Thanksgiving and then closing again until early March 2021. This year, the foundation will hold its 20th golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club on Wednesday, June 23. A fundraising Cadillac dinner will be held at the Lancaster Country Club on Friday, Sept. 24. Fries and ice cream were among the many food items offered at the 2019 Occupational Development Center (ODC) Food Truck Fest at Stauffer Park.
Mueller is hoping for a similar experience for this year’s third annual Food Truck Fest, which will be held on Saturday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Mueller noted that the partnership between ODC and the Manheim Township Recreation Commission has worked well. Keeping in mind the safety of all in attendance, he noted that COVID-19 restrictions in place at that time will be observed with regard to masks, social distancing, and crowd size. Mueller noted, however, that with the large outdoor space and the number of hours the event will be held, crowd size should not be an issue. “We will have a sanitation station for handwashing and hand sanitizing,” noted Mueller. Organizers have planned to have up to 15 food trucks offering a variety of ethnic food items to attendees. Among the many genres that will be offered will be Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Mediterranean, and soul food. “We will have barbecued smoked meats, cheesesteak sausage fries, loaded hot dogs, and Nashville hot chicken

Sounds of Strasburg, the annual series of five free concerts at the Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., will begin with a performance by AMFM on Saturday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m. The band’s name, AMFM, stands for Andy Mowatt’s Frequency Movement. He teaches lessons and master classes, writes, produces, records and tours. Mowatt recently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he will

Approximately 100 works of art by Ron Ettelman will be exhibited and auctioned on Thursday, June 3, at 6 p.m. at Boltz Auctions, 3601 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. A preview will be held on Wednesday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The auction is being held in connection with the retirement of Ron and his wife, Virginia. After 45 years of business, the Ettelmans recently closed the doors of Dream Framer and the Ron Ettelman Gallery in Mountville. The building went to auction on May 13. The artworks to be sold in the upcoming auction are those items that remained at the Ettelmans’ building and that they cannot store.
Half of the proceeds of the auction will be donated, with 25% of sales going to the Lancaster Museum of Art and Demuth Museum and 25% going to the Ware Center. Ron described many of his works as whimsical, often with a deeper story lurking under the surface for viewers to interpret in their own way. In 2016, he previously presented a retrospective exhibit of 153 works at the Ware Center. This exhibit’s title, “Down the Rabbit Hole,” described the artist going to the studio in the basement of his farmhouse to work on his art. For more details, call Boltz Auctions at 717-392-4257.

This year’s camp theme is ‘Pursue,’ which comes from 1 Timothy and encourages fleeing from evil to pursue a godly lifestyle. “It’s a fun-filled camp,” Roth remarked, adding that whole-group friendly competitions in things like Minute to Win It games and Dance Dance Revolution are featured, along with guest speakers. The camp also has an outreach component. “We ask the girls and boys to bring in coins, and it’s a competition to see who can bring in the most to raise money for our partnerships in Southeast Asia,” she explained.
