Buckskin Pride BY ANN MEAD ASH

hen Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) graduates the Class of 2022 at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, June 4 , at 11 a.m., two seniors will be prepared to address members of the administration, the faculty, and the students’ families. Jayden Stokes, daughter of Keith and Karen Stokes of Leola, has titled her speech “The Meaning Behind a Buckskin.” “My speech covers two valuable lessons I learned during my time at CVHS,” said Stokes. “I also (talk about) how my experiences taught me to be a true Buckskin outside the CV community.” In the fall, Stokes plans to attend The George Washington University to major in political science on a pre-law track in hopes of becoming an attorney. said her time at CVHS has been marked by endless opportunities for growth. Gabrielle Rappa is the daughter of Debbie Folk and Richard Rappa of Lancaster. Rappa titled her speech “Failure.” “Failure is inevitable; however, what will separate those who fail and succeed is how we handle failure and learn from mistakes,” said Rappa, who is sworn into the delayed entry program of the United States Space Force (USSF). “I am the first person ever from Lancaster County to be accepted into the USSF. I will most likely be working space systems operations,” Rappa said. Rappa noted that during her time at CVHS, she was inspired by those around her. “I was surrounded and motivated by some of the most hardworking and selfless people, who led me to become the woman I am today,” she stated.

American Cancer Society Fundraiser Scheduled

When Wesley Moyer moved to Lancaster County several years ago, he had a special reason to look for a place to live in Akron. Moyer specifically chose the borough because he likes Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park, 221 N. 11th St., Akron. Moyer’s connection to the park is not simply due to an affinity for the outdoors, but rather is tied to his interest in disc golf, a sport he first discovered at summer camp in Pottstown as a teenager.

In 2020, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Lancaster Relay For Life event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Last year, Relay For Life of Lancaster County held an abbreviated event. “Everyone was so excited to be in each other’s presence and to be able to be on the track,” recalled Stephanie Delp, ACS senior development manager. “That momentum has carried us forward.” See Relay For Life pg 3

The Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) has been recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) as a 2022 Best Community for Music Education, a designation from the NAMM Foundation for outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 23rd year, the Best Community for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Student musicians have access to the Orff Instrumentarium and ukuleles in the elementary classrooms. In addition to string, band, and choral ensembles, students can also compose, arrange, and perform with guitars and music production software in the high school audio production workspace. Conestoga Valley’s music department staff designs curricula and instruction that are aligned with the unique and changing needs of its students. Its music educators have extensive training in Orff, Kodaly, First Steps, Conversational Solfege, Soundtrap, Noteflight, TI:ME, and VoiceNetwork. In addition, grants from the Conestoga Valley Education Foundation (CVEF) have given students and staff unique opportunities not otherwise available in the district’s regular budget, including the aforementioned audio production lab and ukuleles. Relay For Life from pg 1

Produce Auction Workshops Posted Penn State Extension will host a series of workshops titled “Wholesale Buying and Selling Through Produce Auctions” in June and July. The workshops are designed for buyers and growers with little to no previous auction experience who wish to learn how auctions can support their business’s needs. The workshops will examine the benefits of produce auctions to farmers and wholesale buyers, explain what it takes to be successful, and debunk common myths associated with the market channel. Participants will tour the auction, talk with an auctioneer, and watch a live auction with guidance and commentary from Extension educators. All workshops will be held in person and will run from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Workshops will be held at Leola Produce Auction, 135 Brethren Church Road, Leola, on Tuesday, June 7; Oxford Produce Auction, 190 Union School Road, Oxford, on Tuesday, June 14; and at Kutztown Produce Auction, 209 Oak Haven Road, Fleetwood, on Tuesday, July 5. The workshops are free of charge. New and established fruit and vegetable growers, chefs and restaurant buyers, retail market operators, institutional procurement staff members, food processors and co-packers, farm-toschool buyers, and other wholesale buyers are encouraged to attend one of the workshops. To register, visit www.extension .psu.edu and search for “Wholesale Buying and Selling Through Produce Auctions” or call 877-3450691. The workshops are supported by a Specialty Crop Block Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Participants are welcome to stay and participate in the auction. Cash and check will be accepted forms of payment at the auction. For additional information on the benefits of buying at produce auctions, visit the aforementioned website and search for “4 Benefits of Buying at the Produce Auction”; also, a recap of previous auction programs can be found by searching for “Penn State Extension Leads Produce Auction Tours for Buyers.”

member walking the school track throughout the 24-hour period. The event is presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. In keeping with the carnival theme, planners will have tents, stilt walkers, clowns, a magician, face painters, and balloon artists at the location, and a gap in the center of the tent city will create a sort of midway where relay teams will have carnival games set up. Sharon Groff of the Misfits on a Mission team emphasized that Lancaster County residents are welcome to join in the activities. “We want people to know they don’t have to be on a team or be a cancer survivor (to take part),” she said. “Anyone can come. Bring the kids out.” Indeed, Delp reported that children’s activities will be held during both days. Traditional Relay activities will also

be observed, including the survivor’s ceremony at 4 p.m. on June 10 and the luminaria ceremony at dusk that same evening. At 7 p.m. on June 10, the annual cake auction will be held. Delp noted that the auction, which features James Fishel as auctioneer, is not limited to cakes. “Dotty Moser’s famous fudge has brought over $300 at auction,”she said. On the morning of June 11, all survivors and caregivers are invited to a free breakfast provided by the Breakfast Crew beginning at 8 a.m. KPETs will be on-site to promote the ACS Bark For Life event later this year. The 2022 honorary survivor will be Justin Shiffer, and the honorary caregiver will be the infusion team at Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. Readers who would like to learn more about Relay For Life Lancaster may visit www.relayforlife.org /lancaster or call 800-227-2345.

Eye Drop 2022 To Raise Funds For VisionCorps

“It’s a way for me to give back to VisionCorps and to help other people facing the same challenges that I am,” said Mike Hora, when explaining his motivation to participate in Eye Drop 2022, which is presented by VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the blind and visually impaired. During the event, participants are asked to rappel 120 feet from the roof of the Holiday Inn in Lancaster down 10 stories to the ground. Hora is legally blind and has glaucoma, an eye disease that affects his depth perception and ability to see fine detail. He began working at VisionCorps in 2013, and heard about the fundraiser from Megan Tomsheck, VisionCorps vice president. “I never had a fear of heights, and I was pretty active my entire life. I

wanted to do it. It sounded like fun,” Hora recalled. “Megan Tomsheck provided some videos and literature, and the more I saw and read, the more excited I got. It’s our biggest fundraiser.” He credits VisionCorps’ rehabilitation services with helping him learn to adapt to his vision loss and to find employment again, this time working on a production line at VisionCorps. “Eleven years ago, it got to the point I was not able to do the work that I was trained for. Somebody recommended VisionCorps, and I contacted them. They jumped into action,” he said. “I was assigned a client manager, and they evaluated my needs and provided me with mobility and occupational and vocational rehab.”

“I have never been charged a dime for the services I received,” he added. VisionCorps also provided Hora with technology training that allows him to use his smartphone and a computer. “I suffered significant vision loss two years ago. I lost the ability to read texts, so I got introduced to a software program called JAWS that allows me to use the computer,” he said. “It actually reads what is on the screen and tells me what I am typing in. It’s like learning a whole new language.” Hora is taking part in the Eye Drop fundraiser for the third time. “This year I promised myself to give it more time coming down,” he said. “They do a great job with training. It’s very safe. They take all the safety precautions.” See Eye Drop pg 7

“I got more serious (about disc golf) when I came here,” said Moyer, who is now the secretary of the 75member Lancaster County Disc Golf Club (LCDGC). He also volunteers to help maintain the disc golf course at Akron - a 27-basket course with holes in the open, in the pine forest, and mixed between fairways and woods. Maintenance ranges from working to replace worn-out rubber and concrete tee pads at a cost of up to $20,000 to wading waist-deep into the murky pond once a year in search of lost discs. Disc golf, not unlike traditional golf, involves tees and holes, but the holes are baskets and the balls are flying discs. The goal is to put the disc in the basket in the fewest possible throws. “(Akron) is a par three course, so it’s 54 par, and professionals will shoot 45 or 46, while an average (player) shoots about 56,” explained Moyer, who noted for groups of three players, the course takes about three hours and 30 minutes to complete. He noted that while league members meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, many families and members of the Plain community enjoy the course on Sundays.

Just as with clubs for traditional golf, discs are divided by designation. Fairways, drivers, mids, and putters are chosen by the player based on the distance of the throw and other factors. Moyer has stacks of discs he has collected, but he said that starter packs of three can be purchased at a nominal cost. Moyer pointed out the differences in discs, noting that putters are thicker and other discs may have thinner and sharper edges. LCDGC is a county-wide organization that holds five yearly tournaments, including one on New Year’s Day. The next event will be the Pennsylvania State Championship from Friday, July 22, through Sunday, July 24, at all the Lancaster County disc golf venues, which are Overlook Park in Lancaster, D.F. Buchmiller County Park in Lancaster, Shiprock Disc Golf Course in Willow Street, Muddy Run Park in Holtwood, and Herr Park near Millersville, along with Akron. Readers who would like to know more may visit www.lcdgc.com or search for “Lancaster County Disc Golf ” on Facebook.

Eye Drop from pg 6 Eye Drop 2022, VisionCorps’ signature fundraiser, is set for Friday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. Participants must commit to raising at least $1,000 each to support VisionCorps. A new attraction at this year’s Eye Drop will be an expo. It will include information about services provided by the agency, tips and demonstrations of equipment for those with impaired vision and information about ways to promote healthy eye-

sight. Also scheduled are technology demonstrations and talks by medical professionals, who will discuss healthy diets and how diet impacts eye conditions. To learn more about the event or to register as a participant, visit www.EyeDrop2022.org. Hora, an outdoorsman and fisherman, has created a fundraising team called American Ninja Walleyes. Those who would like to contribute to his fundraising efforts may visit https://give.visioncorps .net/team/411113.

Barbershop Singers Honored At Competition Vocal Harmonix, the Lancaster Chapter of Sweet Adelines (SA) International, attended the Atlantic Bay-Mountain Region 19 competition, which was held at the Marriott Conference Center in Lancaster from April 28 to May 1. This is a yearly competition among groups from a region that spans five surrounding states. Choruses gather, perform, and are adjudicated in their craft of female singing in the barbershop style. Vocal Harmonix won first place in the Small Chorus category and third place overall for the weekend. Vocal Harmonix, a women’s a cappella show chorus providing musical, educational and leadership opportunities, has performed for audiences locally and throughout the

“People know (the IU13) from the lens of special education classrooms, and that is the foundation of who we are, but we have a 50-year history of doing really good work,” said Shannan Guthrie, program director with the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13). “ We take that dedication to other areas.” Among those areas are helping teachers with curriculum development and school districts to maximize funding. A sampling of the IU13’s activities will be highlighted during the group’s 50th anniversary celebration on Thursday, June 9, at the Lancaster offices, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, from 4 to 7 p.m. Organizers will have a plethora of activities ready for attendees to enjoy. Among those will be the Star Lab, a portable planetarium that can hold up to 20 people, which will be set up in the IU’s large conference room. A demonstration of Brailing

services will give attendees an idea of the number of books and flyers the IU transfers into Braille format each year. “ We will showcase our Refugee Center and our cultural navigator services,” said Guthrie, who explained that cultural navigators help families to meet with other families and navigate the system to find babysitters, shelter, education, and health care services. A demonstration of orientation and mobility services will be held, and STEM activities will show how lessons can be adapted for all levels of learning. “It will be in an expo style with examples (of what the IU13 does) all over the place,” said Guthrie, who added that Lisa Sanchez, a representative of Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, will talk about summer camps. Other stops on the visit might include learning about organ tissue donation or meeting Luca, a facility dog that that travels to classrooms within the IU. “We will have free hot dogs,

Although based in Lancaster, Vocal Harmonix draws members from Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin and York counties, as well as Hagerstown, Md. The group rehearses on Mondays at 7 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg. An open rehearsal will be held on June 6, and prospective members are invited to participate. For more information, visit w w w. v o c a l h a r m o n i x . o r g or email vocalharmonix @gmail.com.

Organizers have also prepared a special page that highlights milestones of IU13 history at www.iu13.org/history. “IUs were founded in 1965,” said Guthrie. “The IUs opened their offices in 1971.” Guthrie emphasized that members of the public are welcome at the free event. “The idea is to celebrate (and) learn about the work we do,” she said, noting that she hopes attendees will leave with “an understanding of the breadth of IU13.” “There are so many amazing things happening that people don’t (know about),” she said. repertoire includes music from Ireland, Scotland, and the U.S., also drawing from the traditions of Sweden, Brazil, France, Hungary, and many other countries. The band both creates new arrangements and writes its own material. The Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble will present music on Sunday, June 19. In the case of rain, the concert will take place on Sunday, July 3. The group is inspired by the early 20th-century tradition of the community mandolin orchestra. The quintet consists of Greg Rohrer on mandolin, Kevin Neidig on mandolin and octave mandolin, Tom Cook on mandola, and Henry Koretzky on mandocello and mandolin. Neidig,

Cook, and Koretzky provide vocals. The band’s repertoire has grown to include original tunes and arrangements from both Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble members and local musical colleagues, as well as a wide array of tunes and songs drawing from jazz, swing, bluegrass, old-time, folk, and world music. Concerts will also include Fire in the Glen on July 10, with a rain date of July 17; Swing Street on Aug. 21, with a rain date of Aug. 28; and Ragtime Willi on Sept. 11, with a rain date of Sept. 18. Fire in the Glen is a threepiece band led by Tom Knapp, band founder, fiddler and bodhranist. Knapp is joined onstage by Amanda Wells on guitar, percussion and vocals

and Rod Nevin on Highland bagpipes, Scottish smallpipes, pennywhistle, ukulele and vocals. Swing Street will present fun renditions of mainstream jazz standards and jazz adaptations of popular tunes. Ragtime Willi will play a wide variety of music in the Americana style: old-timey blues songs, traditional fiddle tunes played on the mandolin and originals, plus singersongwriter classics by artists such as Bob Dylan, John Prine, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Credence Clearwater Revival and Woody and Arlo Guthrie. People are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets and pack a picnic supper. The law firm Haggerty & Silverman will sponsor the concerts.

Concert from pg 10 A freewill offering will be received to support scholarships presented by AGO to young people so they may obtain organ lessons. One scholarship winner, Kyle

Bainhauer, will perform J.S. Bach’s Fugue in G minor during the upcoming program. Parking is available in the garage across the street from the church.
