Passing On A Tradition Conestoga Valley Area Graves Decorated For Memorial Day BY ANN MEAD ASH

lacing American flags on graves at the Bareville Cemetery on Brethren Church Road in Leola has become an annual Memorial Day tradition for the family of Bob Zook, Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) president, and his wife, Barbara, who is also a ULTWMA board member. On the afternoon of May 19, Bob and Barb; their son, Jon; daughter-in-law, Michele; and grandchildren Gavin and Joelle worked approximately an hour to place flags on about 40 graves in the cemetery, one of several area cemeteries Bob said the ULTWMA trustees decorated for Memorial Day. Along with the Zooks, members of the ULTWMA board are vice president Tim Chopp, secretary Nancy George, Donna Bills, Connie and Dean Gross, Harold Hoover, Carl and Lin Pickel, Bob Ranck, Gene and Janet Rodgers, and Jean Summers. Lin oversees the flag placement program.

Bob Zook said that in early May, Lin ordered 450 flags through Veterans Affairs to decorate the graves in area cemeteries. He noted that the flags were picked up at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center in Manheim in production-line style to observe COVID-19 safety measures. Other members of the ULTWMA board oversee the placement of flags at cemeteries at Stumptown Mennonite Church, Zion Lutheran Church, Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church, Eby’s Cemetery at Monterey Chapel, and Trumbauer Memorial Cemetery. According to Barb, the grandchildren, now Garden Spot High School students, have been helping to plant the flags since they were very young. “They were preschoolers (when they started),” said Michele, as Barb added that the family has photos of the children helping when they were small.

Scouts And Wolf Sanctuary Partner For Event BY ANN MEAD ASH

The Pennsylvania Dutch Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Wolf Sanctuary of PA have joined forces to hold virtual 5K and 15K events during the month of June. Horse-Shoe Trail District executive Nicole Welch reports that there is a unique connection between the two organizations. “(The sanctuary) is close enough to (Camp Mack) that we can occasionally hear the wolves howling at night,” reported Welch. “Whenever the wolves howl and our Cubs hear it that is really a special moment for them.” See Scouts pg 7

Local Magician Receives Prestigious Award BY ANN MEAD ASH

Francesca Satiro and Shaylee Daniels took different views toward the presentation they will make to friends, family, classmates, and school staff members. “I am going for a comedic approach to lighten things up,” shared Satiro. “I want to step away from the COVID-19 approach.” Satiro plans to recognize the accomplishments of the class members and to express her pride in the students, but she will also make jokes in the spirit of a roast. “It’s meant to be funny,” she said. “I am proud of you even though (things could have) been better.” In the fall, Satiro plans to attend Juniata College in Huntingdon to major in politics, economics, and philosophy. She said that her years at CVHS have had a profound effect in shaping her future. “I found who I am at CVHS,” said Satiro, who noted that the contributions of teachers and groups she joined changed her view of her future. “I walked in with

a totally different expectation (of what I would do with my life), and I found organizations that brought out what I am meant to do.” Daniels opted for a more traditional approach in her speech. “I talk about the obstacles we faced this year and the adaptations the class was able to make,” she said. “I recognize how (different) groups were able to adapt to new situations.” Daniels noted that although the Class of 2021 did not have a traditional senior year, she felt that her classmates made the most of the situation and developed perseverance

and other skills they will use in the future. In the fall, she plans to attend Lafayette College in Easton, where she will study government and law. Daniels pointed out that she is thankful for the connections she made at CVHS through the organizations she was involved in. “I tried three new sports and a bunch of clubs,” she said. “I made friends (with students) and connections with teachers, and I helped in the community. I don’t know if I would have made those connections anywhere else.”

works to alleviate financial obligations that can become burdensome. “We try to keep (the family) in their home, so we make mortgage payments, rents, utilities, and car payments,” said Musser. Larry Shirk, who helps the organization fundraise, said that the hospital social workers who contact Musser with information about families that need help are crucial to the system. Musser contacts referred families by phone when he is allowed and then sends requests to the organization’s six-member board. Larry’s wife, Judi, acts as administrator, getting checks to families in need. Over the last year or so, communication between Musser, board members, and the Shirks has been done electronically so the work of the foundation could continue. “After this year, we will have given out $2 million,” said Musser, who noted that donations were down significantly in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. “The best way

When Akron resident Jeff Musser was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1999 at the age of 42, doctors prescribed several months of chemotherapy with the possibility of a bone marrow transplant following remission. “At that time, insurance didn’t cover bone marrow transplants,” recalled Musser. “A bunch of my friends got together, and they raised about $35,000 for me.” After Musser underwent 28 months of chemotherapy, doctors at The Johns Hopkins Hospital decided not to perform the bone marrow transplant. “When I got well after two years, I had $35,000,” said Musser, who also had a heightened awareness of the situations faced by the families of children with the same type of cancer he had. “My cancer was a childhood leukemia,” he said. “For kids it’s 80% curable, but for adults it’s 20% curable.”

Although the high cure rate is good news for families whose children are diagnosed with the disease, Musser saw the toll it took on parents. “I was receiving a lot of my chemo with kids and their parents and hearing about how they were trying to make ends meet,” he said, adding that often one parent stops working to care for the child. “A lightbulb went off, and I thought, ‘I will use this $35,000 for that.’” Because the initial funds were raised by friends of Musser who held a golf tournament, he decided to hold another. This year, the foundation will hold its 20th golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club on Wednesday, June 23. A fundraising Cadillac dinner will be held at the Lancaster Country Club on Friday, Sept. 24. In 2001, the Jeff Musser Foundation became an official nonprofit. Working with social workers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn State Hershey, and Nemours in Wilmington, Del., the organization

“This is our little boy,” said Bob Zook, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Gavin, who will soon be 16. It is important to Bob, who served in the U.S. Marines, to pass the tradition of honoring U.S. veterans at Memorial Day to his children and grandchildren. He has said that the placement of flags honors all deceased veterans who served in any U.S. military branch.

Beginning Thursday, June 3, the city of Lancaster Office of Promotion (LOOP) will host its 45th annual Red Rose Run. This year’s race will be virtual, and participants can complete their 5 miles in one continuous route or over the course of four days from June 3 to Sunday, June 6. Participants will have the option to walk or run the race and can submit their times for a chance to win awards. Organizers will email the winners once they have been determined. Tshirts will be included in registration, which is currently open. This will be the fourth year that proceeds benefit Lancaster Central Market. When asked why people should participate in the race, Dani Decker, communications manager at Central Market, said, “Because it allows Central Market to continue operating and to continue to be a source of fresh food for Lancaster city and the surrounding counties.” Although there are for profit businesses within the market, Central Market is run by a nonprofit. Events such as Red Rose Run help Central Market with outreach, employing staff, and maintaining the building. Although the race was different last year, the proceeds still made a huge impact on

Central Market. “It was so important because we used the money to purchase hand sanitizer stations, provide masks to everyone who walked through the doors, and do thorough cleanings,” explained Decker LOOP strives to make Red Rose Run better than the year before. This year, LOOP put together six different course options for those local to Lancaster. “Since the race is virtual, you can run it anywhere, but we put together these options to help guide people,” said Annie Weeks, director of LOOP. “It’s been a hard year for so many people, and this is a chance for everyone to do something together from all around the world.

This is a city celebration. We’re celebrating community and we’re celebrating health.” “As a city, we are all coming back together after a year apart, and traditions like the Red Rose Run are a great way to do that,” noted Decker. “Central Market wouldn’t exist without a community. The support we feel coming from the community is what keeps Central Market going.” For more information about the Red Rose Run, visit http://bit.ly/RedRoseRun2021 or email loop@cityoflancasterpa.com. Due to an increase in the number of local teenagers at risk for anxiety, depression, and suicide in Lancaster County in the last year, as well as the virtual schooling that has occurred during the pandemic, TeenHope is developing a fully digital screening process. The transition to digital has been fueled by the donations of many individual supporters, as well as local organizations such as the High Foundation, which contributed a $15,000 grant, and LOHF, which provided a total of $30,000 in grants. Except for 2020, every year since 1994, Water Street Mission (WSM) has hosted a Drive Away Hunger Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament will occur on Friday, June 18, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Jill Brinser of Hermione Paints has shown her artwork at Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, three consecutive years during the We Love Our Pets Exhibit, but soon she will fill the gallery space with a collection all her own - “Elements and Personalities, Realistic Still Lifes and Portraits by Hermione Paints.” The show will open with a First Friday reception on June 4 from 5 to 9 p.m., and it will be displayed through Wednesday, June 30. After 28 years of working in design and advertising, Brinser decided to reinvent herself as an acrylic painter. In late 2018, she rekindled a longignored passion for fine art. A resident of Elizabethtown, Brinser has shown her work at area shows and businesses and keeps a running list of styles and subjects to explore. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Brinser is an active member of the Hershey Area Art Association. Brinser said she likes to explore details such as reflections, highlights, shadows and textures, and she tries to present her subjects in a new way. The “Elements” portion of her upcoming show consists of 17 still lifes that feature metal items, glass objects, food and objects from nature. The “Personalities” series comprises portraits of six people Brinser knows. For more information and directions to the gallery, visit www .mulberryartstudios.com. Bucks Take On Hempfield in District Opener

The Buckskin volleyball team capped their 9-6 season with a trip to the PIAA District III Tournament, bowing out after a first-round loss to Hempfield 3-0. The showdown was held on May 20th at the fifth seeded Black Knight’s court, with the Bucks challenging for an upset as the 12th seed. Though the contest went to Hempfield after three games (2518, 25-14, 25-9), CV was led on offense by Sawyer Shertzer’s 17 kills and one ace. Dominic Brabant dished 25 assists, Kyle Hutchinson came up with six digs, and defensive duo Charles Janvrin and Jayden Rice each supplied a pair of blocks. Participants are invited to register online for a nominal fee. Registrants will receive an email with a bib they can print out and a link to the Facebook event page where they can share photos and locations from their run. Welch explained that the Scouting program, which includes more than 2,000 young people in the Lancaster-Lebanon area, encourages giving back to the community. “The Wolf Sanctuary gets most of their funding from their tours, so when we found out they couldn’t do that (because of COVID-19 restrictions,

survive. “They don’t want a human out of their sight, and they develop bad behaviors and that becomes a reason for people to seek rescue.” Taking in a new wolf is dependent on a number of factors, including space, resources, and putting together companion wolves at the sanctuary. Although the sanctuary often rescues older wolves, it has also taken in puppies. The sanctuary was founded by Bill and Barbara Darlington when they began rescuing wolves more than 40 years ago. As Welch mentioned, tours are a major source of income for the sanctuary, and the organization has not been able to draw large numbers due to COVID-19 restrictions. “We have been doing tours by reservation only,” explained Mancini, who noted that both daytime and moonlight tours are currently available for small groups. The Wolf Sanctuary currently has 57 wolves according to Michelle Mancini, education coordinator. She shared that a number of them come from domestic situations. “Wolves are very loyal,” noted Mancini. “One of the biggest issues in a household setting is separation anxiety.” She explained that wolves bond fiercely with household members because in the wild, they rely on that bond to

Myers submitted a video to the international competition at the end of 2020 after being encouraged by friends. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all submissions and awards were done virtually. “After reviewing all the entries, they selected ours as the best,” said Myers, who added that he was notified of the award in February by IMS president and founder Tony Hassini. Myers explained that the show was chosen for manipulation talents. “There is a part of the act where I do sleight of hand,” he said. “It’s very difficult and showcases the magician’s skill. It requires decades of mastery and experience.” The specific part of the act Myers referred to involves silk manipulation with many brightly colored handkerchiefs

appearing and disappearing. “The color makes it difficult to conceal (the handkerchiefs),” Myers explained. “Worlds of Wonder,” which is now playing at the theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise, involves the Magic and Wonder cast taking audiences to different worlds, including visiting the circus, adventures with pirates, Alice in Wonderland, and the world of the 1980s. “The show has a patriotic ending where we remember the most wonderful place that we live in a tribute to those who have sacrificed so much to make those freedoms possible,” said Myers. The theater is currently open up to five days per week, and Myers noted that eventually he would like to present up to 10 shows weekly. “We were in the process of working

on launching a second show in Lancaster last year,” said Myers, who said that a comedy, music, and variety show was planned and postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions. “We will have more (entertainment) experiences, including (types of shows) that Lancaster County hasn’t seen,” said Myers, adding that the size and flavor of the show is unique to the area. Myers grew up in Chambersburg, but he and his family have lived in Lancaster for more than a decade. “We call this home,” said Myers, who has also performed in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and put together the details of the current Magic and Wonder show in Branson, Mo. More information about the show is available at www.lancaster magicshow.com. Readers with questions may call 717-323-3077.

Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that emits a tracking signal on FM radio frequency. When a caregiver calls 911 and reports that a participant has wandered, a search team triangulates the area and uses a receiver to locate the individual through his or her transmitter. “People should enroll in the pro-

gram because, although this won’t keep loved ones from wandering, it will serve as a safety net,” explained Cieslinski. “If they wander, this will give us a fighting chance to find them as opposed to finding that needle in a haystack.” Police officers keep profiles on every individual enrolled. “We have these on hand so officers are aware of what the person looks like, what they will possibly wander to, what their disabilities include, and so on,” noted Brubaker. “Sometimes, we will meet individuals enrolled in the program, specifically children, to establish a friendship with them so
