A Service To Remember Fairmount Honors Those Who Died Due To COVID-19 BY ANN MEAD ASH
t 6 p.m. on May 12, the temperature was pleasant, and the weather was fair. Jerry Lyle, president at Fairmount, could not help but remark on the evening as he addressed more than 25 others who had gathered on the top of the hill where the Ephrata retirement home is located. “ What a beautiful evening we have as we look over the valley,” said Lyle, before thanking the friends and family of residents who had passed due to COVID-19 for joining him for a brief service in honor of those residents. In his opening remarks, Lyle referenced springtime as a season of optimism and hope, noting, “As Christians, we live our lives centered on hope. We are reminded that God is faithful even in days of uncertainty,” he said. Specifically addressing relatives of those who had passed, he said, “This evening, we remember

each resident. They were fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, and truly loved by all of us.” Before leading the Lord’s Prayer, Lyle pointed out the new redbud tree donated to Fairmount by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health in memory of the residents who succumbed to COVID-19. Chaplain Eugene Weaver also spoke, specifically sharing Scripture verses that he noted had been especially meaningful to many Fairmount patients. “It is the love of God that has helped us through the pandemic and is carrying us to our eternal home,” he said, adding that Psalm 23 is a favorite. “COVID took us through a valley,” he said, referring to verse 4. Weaver also read from John 11:25 and said, “We can look forward to being with our loved ones again. That is the joy and hope we Christians have.” To honor those loved ones individually, Fairmount staff members read names of those who had died, See Fairmount pg 6

Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager at Occupational Development Center (ODC), is just a little biased when he talks about the coffee he and other staff members chose to be ODC’s selection from Wanderlust Coffees. “It’s just a really good coffee - not too strong, not weak,” said Mueller, who now purchases the coffee beans in five-pound bags. “It’s the only coffee I drink now. It is so good.”
Auction Will Aid Centers BY ANN MEAD ASH
Mervin is 22 years old, but his youthful exuberance gives one the impression that he is younger. As a student at Sunny Sunbeam, one of seven centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties that serve members of the Plain community with special needs, Mervin is quick to greet a visitor and talk about the activities he enjoys up to three days a week. He points out the stickers he puts on boxes of clothespins that the students package for Georgetown Sales. He says his favorite job to do outside is to mow the lawn behind the workshop. The other centers - Caring
Hearts, Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow - gives the more than 80 students who attend a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly bring-something, buy-something auction. This year’s auction will be the 15th annual benefit and it will be held on Monday, July 5, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. Items that will be sold at the auction include flowers and plants,

toys, barbecue apparatus, carriages, swing sets, sheds, and quilts made at Caring Hearts, which will be sold at 4 p.m. A garage, which will be built on location for the winner, will also go up for bids. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten onsite or taken out, and a drive-through food pickup will be available.

Placing American flags on graves at the Bareville Cemetery on Brethren Church Road in Leola has become an annual Memorial Day tradition for the family of Bob Zook, Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) president, and his wife, Barbara, who is also a ULTWMA board member. On the afternoon of May 19, Bob and Barb; their son, Jon; daughter-in-law, Michele; and grandchildren Gavin and Joelle worked approximately an hour to place flags on about 40 graves in the cemetery, one of several area cemeteries Bob

Tradition from pg 2 According to Barb, the grandchildren, now Garden Spot High School students, have been helping to plant the flags since they were very young. “They were preschoolers (when they started),” said Michele, as Barb added that the family has photos of the children helping when they were small. “This is our little boy,” said Bob Zook, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Gavin, who will soon be 16. It is important to Bob, who served in the U.S. Marines, to pass the tradition of honoring U.S. veterans at Memorial Day to his children and grandchildren. He has said that the placement of flags honors all deceased veterans who served in any U.S. military branch.

said Sensenig, who described the apparatus as being surrounded by an air cushion, “so you land on something very comfortable.” The bull ride will be one of a few new activities that will be mixed with more traditional fun when Heritage Days are held Friday and Saturday, June 18 and 19, in the Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville. Activities will begin at 5 p.m. on June 18 and at 6:30 a.m. on June 19. Another new event this year will be a cornhole tournament, with registration opening on June 19, the day of the event. “Cornhole is a very popular game,” noted Sensenig. Another popular event is the annual volleyball tournament, which generally fills up quickly with as many as 70 teams playing on 12 nets. “The teams play a lot of games, and they really enjoy that, and (the tournament) draws so much attention and energy,” said Sensenig. Interested teams may call 717-984-0293. The Food Showcase, which lasts from 5 to 9 p.m. on June 18, is designed to feature local eateries,

including the Kling House Restaurant, Olde Mill Restaurant, Amos’ Place, and Immergut Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzels. Sensenig expects to see items such as burgers, pork and sauerkraut, crab cakes, sausage sandwiches, and pretzel dogs, along with french fries and Lapp’s ice cream and milkshakes. Also scheduled for June 18 are children’s activities, including the pedal tractor pull at 6 p.m. and the spelling bee at 7 p.m. Registration for the baking competition, featuring shoofly pies, whoopie pies, and other types of pies, will begin at 5 p.m. Summit Hill Bluegrass will play, and the Heritage Display will be on site to view. A silent auction will be held for a wooden eagle carved during the 2019 Heritage Days celebration, and fireworks will begin at dusk. Sensenig noted that the committee waited until May to make a decision about whether to hold the outdoor event. “We were hopeful. Mueller explained that the coffee is offered through a partnership with Wanderlust, which is run from a roasting facility on North Christian Street in Lancaster, by Timm, Kristina, and Thaniel Wenger. Before COVID-19, Timm was overseeing a business that provided walking tours of ethnic restaurants in the city. “They had to shut (the tours) down due to COVID-19 (restrictions),” recalled Mueller. “They decided to get into coffee roasting, and to partner with area nonprofits,” he added, noting that ODC was among the first nonprofits contacted by Wanderlust. Half a dozen ODC staff members taste-tested three coffee blends provided by Wanderlust. “We chose the one we wanted, and we chose the name,” said Mueller. Grounds for Success became Wanderlust’s ODC signature coffee. “The idea is that we get a blend that is exclusively ours, and we get 20% of the sales from it.” The tagline “It gets the job done.” was added to the name.

According to Mueller, Grounds for Success comes in a 12-ounce size, a five-packet gift size, and the fivepound bag he prefers. The coffee also comes in a variety of grinds. Mueller purchases whole beans because he grinds the beans himself, but choices also include coarse for a French press or cold brew, medium-coarse ground, for pour-over or reusable pods, medium for classic drip coffee, and fine for espresso. Several shipping options are available as well. “We have had (client) family members pick it up at ODC,” said Mueller. He added that the coffee makes a great gift. “It has a really pleasant smooth taste,” he noted. ODC, located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. Yoga In The Park Planned The Lancaster Recreation Commission and AIM to Empower Yoga are partnering this summer to host Yoga in the Park, a series of in-person community yoga classes held weekly at various parks throughout the city. Last year, the two organizations partnered to livestream yoga classes virtually during the pandemic. This year’s in-person experience will aim to get attendees away from technology and experiencing nature, all while becoming more mentally focused and relaxed. The
classes are for people of all ages; they are free of charge, and registration is not required. Classes take place on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. at Buchanan Park, Buchanan and Race avenues; on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at Culliton Park/Farnum Park, Farnum and Water streets; on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Musser Park, North Lime Street; and on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. at Rodney Park, Third and Crystal streets. Brownie Troop 71308, based in Brownstown and consisting of second- and third-graders, worked on the “A World of Girls” Journey on April 17. The goal of the program is to have fun exploring how stories and games can link participants to the wide world of girls and how participants belong to this wide world of girls, too. The program aims to strengthen girls’ confidence and give them opportunities to better the world. Brownies learned that stories con-
tain clues that can be used to make the world a better place. Scouts discussed fictional stories that take Brownie girl characters to diverse places in the world as well as stories of real-life Brownies exploring their world closer to home. Together, members of Troop 71308 cooked foods from other countries, including mango dip, adobo chicken and crepes. Local Magician Receives Prestigious Award Asked how it feels to receive the Merlin Award, known as the most prestigious award in magic, given by the International Magicians Society (IMS), Brett Myers of the Magic and Wonder Theater in Paradise was characteristically modest. “As a kid, I looked up to magicians I saw on television … David Copperfield, Siegfried & Roy, or Penn and Teller and then to have
won an award they have won is extremely humbling.” Myers was quick to credit all those involved in his show, “Worlds of Wonder,” for which he won in the category of Best Magic and Variety Show. “(The award is) something that recognizes the hours of work our team has poured into creating wonder for audiences that visit this theater,” he said. Myers submitted a video to the international competition at the

end of 2020 after being encouraged by friends. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all submissions and awards were done virtually. “After reviewing all the entries, they selected ours as the best,” said Myers, who added that he was notified of the award in February by IMS president and founder Tony Hassini. Myers explained that the show was chosen for manipulation talents. “There is a part of the act where I do sleight of hand,” he said. “It’s very difficult and showcases the magician’s skill. It requires decades of mastery and experience.” The specific part of the act Myers referred to involves silk manipulation with many brightly colored handkerchiefs appearing and disappearing. “The color makes it difficult to conceal (the handkerchiefs),” Myers explained. “Worlds of Wonder,” which is now playing at the theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise, involves the Magic and Wonder cast taking audiences to different worlds, including visiting the circus, adventures with pirates, Alice in Wonderland, and the world of the 1980s. “The show has a patriotic ending where we remember the most wonderful place that we live in a tribute to those who have sacrificed so much to make those freedoms possible,” said Myers. The theater is currently open up to five days per week, and Myers noted that eventually he would like to present up to 10 shows weekly. “We were in the process of

working on launching a second show in Lancaster last year,” said Myers, who said that a comedy, music, and variety show was planned and postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions. “We will have more (entertainment) experiences, including (types of shows) that Lancaster County hasn’t seen,” said Myers, adding that the size and flavor of the show is unique to the area. Myers grew up in Chambersburg, but he and his family have lived in Lancaster for more than a decade. “We call this home,” said Myers, who has also performed in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and put together the details of the current Magic and Wonder show in Branson, Mo. Historical Society Posts Reopening The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) has announced reopening dates for both of its facilities. The library and research center opened on June 2, returning to its normal business hours of Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. HSCV asks that visits during June are scheduled by appointment only by calling the librarian, Cynthia Marquet, at 717-733-1616. Beginning on Saturday, July 10, the Connell Mansion will open for museum tours with its new hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday. The HSCV plans to follow all current CDC guidelines, including proper handwashing and sanitizing, and mask wearing for those who are not fully vaccinated. Individuals who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear masks inside HSCV buildings at this time. However, protocols may change as federal and state guidelines evolve. The HSCV asks all visitors to follow posted recommendations to help protect staff, volunteers, and other visitors. As always, HSCV members may use the William and Jemima Brossman Library at no charge, while nonmembers must pay a nominal fee. The Theodore R. Sprecher Museum in the Connell Mansion is free and open to the public. HSCV is located at 237-249 W. Main St., Ephrata. For additional information, email hscv@cocalicovalleyhs.org or call 717-733-1616.
