Together Again: Aaron’s Acres Campers Ready To Get Back In The Saddle R In 2020, COVID-19 restrictions limited physical interactions between the two organizations, although GMTRC was able to offer some virtual programming to Aaron’s Acres campers through Zo o m c a l l s a n d s o c i a l m e d i a .
“We are thrilled to have the campers back on the property.” Now that the campers can visit the stable in person, they will be able to enjoy riding, grooming, and leading the horses, along with learning about the barn operations and helping keep the stable clean. According to Paskoff, there is nothing better than seeing a camper get on a horse. “Whether it’s for the first time or for the 10th time … he or she is riding the horse,” said Paskoff. “For many of our campers, it is also
unconditional acceptance from the horses (that is so important).” Paskoff added that the GMTRC staff are patient and kind as they help support each child with the goal of a safe, positive experience. GMTRC program director Stephanie Fleck will be working with Aaron’s Acres campers for the first time this summer, and she is looking forward to the experience. “ We are thrilled to have the campers back on the property,” she said. “We look forward to witnessing the physical and emotional interactions the campers will have when they encounter a horse.” Readers who would like to learn about Aaron’s Acres may visit www.aaronsacres.org. More information about GMTRC is available at www.greystonemanortrc.org. An Aaron’s Acres camper gets a hand from Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center staff members during a visit to the stables.

isa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, is “beyond excited” to be taking Aaron’s Acres campers back to Greystone Manor Therapuetic Riding Center (GMTRC) this summer, and staff at GMTRC are happy to be welcoming groups back to the barn at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. Aaron’s Acres provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. GMTRC works to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs through equineassisted activities. Paskoff was quick to point out several of the benefits the horseback riding experience offers to campers, including increased self-esteem and confidence, improved flexibility, improved balance and strength, improved coordination, and the sense of independence, even with support staff walking along next to the camper.

More than 40 years ago, Ken McCrea’s father suddenly decided to retire, sell his home, and travel. “I had to rush home that weekend and let (my family) know of anything I wanted to keep,” McCrea recalled, adding that he quickly left graduate school at Purdue University to return to Reamstown. During that visit, McCrea found his mother’s collection of old family photographs. “I thought it would be neat to

McCrea said that researching family members who came to America by ship is easier if the ancestor arrived after 1820, when the federal government began keeping lists of passengers for immigration purposes. “You might get an age, occupation, and a country,” shared McCrea, who said that lists created in the 1900s might include the name of the person the passenger was coming to visit and maybe a birth date. said McCrea, who noted northern parts of Lancaster County may be up to 90% German and Swiss. Because German lineage is common in the area, McCrea offered tips specific to searching that history. “About the 1820s, it became popular for people of German ancestry to translate names (to English),” he said. As an example, McCrea noted that the name Zimmerman was often translated to Carpenter. He also pointed out that many family members have similar names because of the tradition of naming the first son after his father’s father. “The second son is often named for his mother’s

arrange them into a family tree,” said McCrea, who noted that the idea was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with genealogy. McCrea said that the internet has been a boon to searching for one’s ancestry, but he warned would-be researchers to beware of errors. “You have to go back to the original sources and reconfirm,” he stated. “Don’t just accept something as fact.” The number of Germans arriving in Pennsylvania began to increase around 1715, according to McCrea. “By 1727, leaders in Philadelphia noticed (the increase) and started tracking them,”

At 66 Lancaster Ave., Ephrata, just a stone’s throw from Ephrata Hospital, is a small building that holds treasures to make the eyes of most children and many adults grow large with delight. The Seiverling Museum - Car and Pedal Car Museum holds 150 pedal cars from all over the world, plus three full-size classic cars. “This was put together by my great-uncle Richard Seiverling,” said Darren Seiverling, who, along with his family, oversees the museum and gives tours by appointment. Richard, who passed in 2006, began collecting cars - full-size cars - in the mid-1980s. “The building was built in 1991 to house his car collection,” said Darren, noting that between 1991 and 1994, the building was full of classic cars with space to work on some of them. “Around ’95, he got the first pedal car, and he was so proud,” recalled Darren, pointing out the 1947 tan and orange Pontiac that is still in the museum. “He called us over the first day it came because he was so excited.” The first pedal car was the beginning of a trend that would last the rest of Richard’s life. “It felt like every week, I was putting in a new pedal car,” Darren said. “They came in crates from all over the nation.” According to Darren, Richard liked the

Members of the Red Rose Repeater Association will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27, at 773 County Line Road, Gap. This event is open to the public, and the club particularly recommends stopping by on Saturday between 2 and 6 p.m. The event will close by 2 p.m. on Sunday. For more than 100 years, amateur radio - also called ham radio - has allowed persons from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster or emergency, all without needing a cellphone or the internet. Through amateur radio, people can explore electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other areas of science. Field Day demonstrates ham radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks, under adverse conditions from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. In 2019, more than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in Field Day; last year, participants numbered almost 19,000. Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed ham radio operations in the United States ranging in age from 9 to 102. Youths from around the county will take part in the Servant Stage production “Don’t Rock the Jukebox.”
Cavod has posted auditions for two musical theater camps this summer. The camps will allow students ages 10 to 18 to develop their theater skills through master classes from professionals. The final production will feature professional costumes, lighting, and music. Participants should bring a headshot, a resume, and sheet music to their audition. They should prepare a oneminute monologue and 16 to 32 bars of a song. Auditions for an “Into the Woods Jr.” camp will be held at Cavod Theatre on Friday, June 25, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. A read-through and costume fitting will take place at the theater on Saturday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. performers will appear at 11 a.m. at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and that same day at Lancaster County Christian School, 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. On Sunday, June 27, the show will move to the New Holland Park, 498 E. Jackson St., New Holland, at 3 p.m. Wally Calderon, who serves as the Servant Stage artistic director said that he has loved working with this group of teens. “The energy and fun that they bring to each rehearsal has been unbelievable, and it shows in the stories they are telling through each song,” he said. Calderon added that because the youths are willing to work and grow as performers, he has been able to push and challenge them further. “And they have risen to each occasion,” he noted. Performer Elle Herson, age 14, said that she hopes audiences enjoy the enthusiasm she and other performers put into the show. “It’s fun to work with others who enjoy using the stage as an avenue to connect with other people,” she said.
Servant Stage offers performances on a pay-what-youwill basis as part of the organization’s mission to make the arts accessible to all community members. To learn more about the organization or reserve tickets, readers may visit www.servantstage.org or call 717-455-0255. Servant Stage is also offering other youth theater opportunities, including Summer Theatre Camps for students ages 10 to 18 of all levels of experience. Upcoming youth productions set for Mondays through Saturdays, will include “Once Upon a Mattress” from July 5 through 10, “Aladdin” from July 12 through 17, “Moana” from July 26 through 31, and “High School Musical 2” from Aug. 2 through 7. The Servant Stage Teen Company and Apprentice Company, which are intensive training programs for students interested in pursuing musical theater after high school, run June through October. Fairmount Honors Those Who Died Due To COVID-19
At 6 p.m. on May 12, the temperature was pleasant, and the weather was fair. Jerry Lyle, president at Fairmount, could not help but remark on the evening as he addressed more than 25 others who had gathered on the top of the hill where the Ephrata retirement home is located. “What a beautiful evening we have as we look over the valley,” said Lyle, before thanking the friends and family of residents who had passed due to COVID19 for joining him for a brief service in honor of those residents. In his opening remarks, Lyle referenced springtime as a season of optimism and hope, noting, “As Christians, we live our lives centered on hope. We are reminded that God is faithful even in days of uncertainty,” he said. Specifically addressing relatives of those who had passed, he said, “This evening, we remember each resident. They were fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, and truly loved by all of us.” Before leading the Lord’s Prayer, Lyle pointed out the new redbud tree donated to Fairmount by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health in memory of the residents who succumbed to COVID-19. Chaplain Eugene Weaver also spoke, specifically sharing Scripture verses that he noted had been especially meaningful to many Fairmount patients. “It is the love of God that has helped
us through the pandemic and is carrying us to our eternal home,” he said, adding that Psalm 23 is a favorite. “COVID took us through a valley,” he said, referring to verse 4. Weaver also read from John 11:25 and said, “We can look forward to being with our loved ones again. That is the joy and hope we Christians have.” To honor those loved ones individually, Fairmount staff members read names of those who had died, and when family members were present, the staff member read a brief biography of the patient. One of the first names to be announced was Ira L. Herr Jr. Herr was born April 14, 1927, and he grew up in the Willow Street area. In 1950, he married his wife, Nora, and they had five children together. They eventually had seven grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. Ira worked as a truck driver, and he attended Calvary Monument Bible Church. In 2007, he moved to Fairmount. Among Herr’s joys were gospel music, working on cars, nature, and being outdoors. He especially liked to check on the weather and the gardens, and he loved ice cream. He passed on Aug. 4, 2020, at age of 93. Others honored by the service in the order their names were read were Menno Stoltzfus, F. Mervin Buch, Daniel M. Stoltzfus, George D. Eaby, Roseine J. Sensenig, Arline Weidner, Amos W. Eberly,

Mervin is 22 years old, but his youthful exuberance gives one the impression that he is younger. As a student at Sunny Sunbeam, one of seven centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties that serve members of the Plain community with special needs, Mervin is quick to greet a visitor and talk about the activities he enjoys up to three days a week. He points out the stickers he puts on boxes of clothespins that the students package for Georgetown Sales. He says his favorite job to do outside is to mow the lawn behind the workshop. The other centers - Caring Hearts, Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow - gives the more than 80 students who attend a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly bringsomething, buy-something auction. This year’s auction will be the 15th annual benefit and it will be held on Monday, July 5, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m.
Items that will be sold at the auction include flowers and plants, toys, barbecue apparatus, carriages, swing sets, sheds, and quilts made at Caring Hearts, which will be sold at 4 p.m. A garage, which will be built on location for the winner, will also go up for bids. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out, and a drive-through food pickup will be available. The centers offer a variety of activities for students. Sarah Fisher, one of five teachers at Sunny Sunbeam, said that the students gather at 9:30 a.m. for devotions each day the center is open. They also spend time singing and sharing news from their individual homes. During recess, they enjoy a yard next to the center. Students also help to mow the lawn or tend the flower beds. In addition to packaging the clothespins, the students make keychains,

Scouts Learn About Girls Around The World Brownie Troop 71308, based in Brownstown and consisting of second- and third-graders, worked on the “A World of Girls” Journey on April 17. The goal of the program is to have fun exploring how stories and games can link participants to the wide world of girls and how participants belong to this wide world of girls, too. The program aims to strengthen girls’ confidence and give them opportunities to better the world. Brownies learned that stories contain clues that can be used to make the world a better place. Scouts discussed fictional stories that take Brownie girl characters to diverse places in the world as well as stories of real-life Brownies exploring their world closer to home. Together, members of Troop 71308 cooked foods from other countries, including mango dip, adobo chicken and crepes. For more information about Girl Scouting, call 800-692-7816 or email memberservices@gshpa.org.
