SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Saving The Lives Of Loved Ones BY ANN MEAD ASH

roject Lifesaver is for people who have cognitive impairment that makes them prone to wander,” said Kelly Osborne, community services officer and Project Lifesaver coordinator with the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, Lancaster County. Now that the State Police officers serving in Lancaster are affiliated with Project Lifesaver, the service is available in all areas of the county. Individuals who are enrolled with Project Lifesaver wear a bracelet connected to a transmitter set to a designated radio frequency assigned to that person. If the individual wanders, the battery-operated device emits a signal that can be traced by law enforcement. “Should a (participant) go missing, the caregiver calls a local police department. (Police officers) plug in the frequency to pick up that specific transmitter,” explained Osborne, who noted that the equipment utilizes analog radio frequency because of its reliability. Osborne added that use of the system minimizes time and resources, needed to locate someone, and when it is employed, most participants who wander are found within 30 minutes. In Lancaster County, Project Lifesaver was initiated by The Pilot Club of Lancaster, a service organization, in 2008. Pilot Club members connected with Chief Mark Pugliese of the West Hempfield Township Police Department. In 2012, the project launched from that location. Full membership police agencies that house Project Lifesaver equipment, in addition to West Hempfield, are the Lancaster City Bureau, Elizabethtown Borough, Lititz Borough, Manheim Township, New Holland/Earl Township, Strasburg Borough, and West Lampeter Township. Other areas of Lancaster County are covered by Troop J, located at 2099 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The program is funded by The Pilot Club and Camp Cadet of Lancaster County. Osborne noted that people with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, autism, Down syndrome, or traumantic brain injury are good candidates for this life-saving technology. Noting that many of these individuals are cared for at home, she said, “Because of their conditions, it is imperative that (these individuals) are found quickly. This program is like an additional safety net.” Families of Project Lifesaver participants complete an interview process and sign a contract saying they will abide by obligations, such as testing the bracelet battery daily. There is a cost to cover equipment, but Osborne noted that scholarships are available. “We don’t want to turn anyone away because of finances,” said Osborne. To enroll an individual with Project Lifesaver, Kelly Osborne of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, Lancaster, displays Project Lifesaver equipment. readers may call 443-224-0569 or 717-572-2682.

Book Aims To Empower Families BY ANN MEAD ASH

For more than a decade, Joel Jakubowski, who is now the men’s ministry director with The Potter’s House, has given presentations in Pennsylvania and around the country to help educate family members of those who are ex periencing addiction to drugs or alcohol. A little more than four years ago, Jakubowski started listening to all the people who were encouraging him to write a book on the subject. “One lady squeezed my arm and said, ‘Joel, please write a book,’” Jakubowski recalled. “I went home and looked at my (presentations),” Jakubowski recalled. “I wrote the book in like six hours.” Over the two weeks after writing the draft, Jakubowski edited his writing. “I wanted to make it so people knew they could read it quickly,” he recalled. “It’s a rescue tool.” See The Potter’s House pg 4

The Conestoga Valley (CV) and Manheim Township junior high track and field programs recently teamed up to raise money for Off the Streets. The Off the Streets foundation helps families and individuals in Lancaster get off the streets and into permanent housing. The foundation works with local service agencies to identify those who are in need and then provide a security deposit sent directly to the landlord in addition to providing basic furnishings and household items. The Potter’s House from pg 1 The completed work, “We Didn’t Raise Them This Way! Educating, Equipping, and Empowering Families to Manage Drug-Addicted Behaviors,” was published on Amazon, and Jakubowski has sold about 3,500 copies. “Everyone who reads it contacts me and tells me how it has impacted their life,” said Jakubowski, who noted that the book is geared toward family members who want to know how to manage their own behavior in the situation. “Families don’t know how to respond, so they react,” said Jakubowski. “The reactions are ineffective and generally lock the addiction in deeper.” The other problem Jakubowski noted is that family members shy away from talking about the issue because of the stigma attached to drug addiction. “They think, ‘We are bad family, bad people, bad parents.’ That’s why the book is called ‘We Didn’t Raise Them This Way.’ Of course you didn’t.” Jakubowski said that often the choice to use drugs or alcohol is

tional or social component,” he said, noting that addiction involves spiritual, neurobiological, and emotional aspects. “There’s a spiritual component that looks like idolatry,” he pointed out. “We will all prioritize something as most important in our lives, and we only have two choices: things or God,” he said. “If we worship drugs, we become addicted.” Jakubowski specifically addresses parents in the book, noting that addiction is a family affliction. He encourages parents to own the fact that they cannot cause, control, or cure addiction. “That is the responsibility of the loved one,” he said. Rather, he says they should seek education and support for themselves. “Addiction is a family affliction, (so) everyone is affected,” said Jakubowski. “Everyone has to take a degree of care. Everybody has to make a commitment for wellness.” The Potter’s House, with locations in Leola, Brownstown, and New Holland, began as a program for men dealing with addictions. The Potter’s House of Ruth for women opened in 2020. More information about The Potter’s House and The Potter’s House of Ruth may be found at www.thepottershouselancaster.com.

Conestoga Valley High School Graduation

CVHS Holds Commencement Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) held a commencement ceremony for more than 300 members of the Class of 2022 at Calvary Church, Lancaster, on June 4 at 11 a.m. CVHS principal Michael Smith opened the ceremony with the presentation of the class. Student speaker Gabrielle Rappa spoke on the topic of “Failure.” “No one is immune to failure because of past success,” she noted. “I challenge you (to develop) a will to keep going when it seems like there is no hope.” Student Jayden Stokes spoke on “The Meaning Behind a Buckskin.” Her speech detailed the work she and other students have done to promote inclusivity, and she quoted Angela Davis, saying. “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.” Class of 2022 president Christopher Needham pointed to the difficulties of the past few years, saying, “It has been a trying time for our class. We should be proud of the life and spirit we have brought back into our school environment.” Dave Zuilkoski, superintendent of Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD), addressed the gathering, saying that he was impressed with the members of the Class of 2022. “The word 'potential' has never been more appropriate,” he stated. “They face extremes, but they understand the challenges that await them, and they have a core belief that everyone should feel a sense of belonging.” Idette Groff, CV school board president, asked students to recall their first days of school. “The journey started then was the start of a partnership between you and the school district,” she said, adding, “Parents, we can't let today pass without thanking you for the privi lege of worki ng with your children.” Smith oversaw the presentation of awards. Before introducing the awards, he noted that the Class of 2022 has left its mark on CVHS. “Never accepting the status quo characterized this year's class,” he said. He announced that members of the Class of 2022 will attend 75 colleges, universities, and technical schools. Smith also recognized four members of the class who will serve in the military following high school. The CV Rill Medal of Honor was given to Groff, Needham, and Delaney Castagna. The Conestoga

Students who placed in the top 10% academically were asked to stand and be recognized, as well as students who attended Lancaster C o u n t y C a r e e r a n d Te c h n o l o g y Center. The salutatorian was Annika Bredeman and the valedictorian was Lexie Kauffman. Following the awards, the senior graduation choir performed “The Call.” Smith presented the candidates for graduation, noting that they had met the

requirements, and the students were invited forth to receive their diplomas from Zuilkoski and Groff. When all the diplomas had been presented, Zuilkoski asked students to move their tassels from the right to the left. “ C o n g ra t u l a t i o n s t o t h e
