The William and Jemima Brossman Library, located at 237 W. Main St., Ephrata, in the Hamaker House adjacent to the museum, reopened on June 2 with hours from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. During June, visits should be scheduled by calling 717-733-1616. The Theodore Sprecher Museum in the Connell Mansion will open for self-guided tours each Saturday beginning July 10, with hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Groups may visit by appointment. For those who have passed the Italianate 1869 mansion and the 1930s Tudor-style home with the stained glass bank sign in front and wondered about the picturesque buildings (both owned by the historical society), a trove of historical treasure is contained within. “We have three floors of exhibit space,” explained Bender, who noted that each display case has detailed descriptions. “One of the reasons I wanted to start my own organization was to enable and empower volunteers to be involved in the whole process (of raising and training service dogs),” said Linzey Zoccola, who founded Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD) in 2009. Zoccola and assistant director Ashley Bosserman have recently begun working with dogs, volunteer trainers, and clients in the organization’s new Warwick Center offices in Lititz.

PAD has developed a timeline for puppies that matches them with puppy raisers at two months old after they have begun to be housetrained. At 12 months, the dogs undergo an evaluation, and at 14 months, X-rays are taken of hips and elbows, which are then evaluated by orthopedic veterinarians befor the dogs move forward with the program. Because it’s very important to PAD that clients are partnered with dogs that can meet their needs, it can take several rounds of clients meeting puppies before a match is made. “It depends on what the puppy needs to learn to make a final placement,” explained Zoccola, who noted a smaller female dog with an upbeat personality would not be matched with an individual who has weight-bearing mobility issues. “We would look for individuals who need retrieving and door opening (for that dog),” she said, adding that during meetings PAD representatives and puppy raisers examine dog and client interaction. “We are looking at the individual’s body language when they’re working with the dog,” she noted. “We are watching how the dog is interacting with that individual.” Zoccola added that puppy raisers have input into this process. “We help them to learn what we’re looking for, and together we match that dog with someone with a disability,” she said. Readers who would like to learn more may visit http://padcentral.org or search for “Phoenix Assistance Dogs” on Facebook.

During that visit, McCrea found his mother’s collection of old family photographs. “I thought it would be neat to arrange them into a family tree,” said McCrea, who noted that the idea was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with genealogy. McCrea said that the internet has been a boon to searching for one’s ancestry, but he warned would-be researchers to beware of errors. “You have to go back to the original sources and reconfirm,” he stated. “Don’t just accept something as fact.” The number of Germans arriving in Pennsylvania began to increase around
1715, according to McCrea. “By 1727, leaders in Philadelphia noticed (the increase) and started tracking them,” said McCrea, who noted northern parts of Lancaster County may be up to 90% German and Swiss. Because German lineage is common in the area, McCrea offered tips specific to searching that history. “About the 1820s, it became popular for people of German ancestry to translate names (to English),” he said. As an example, McCrea noted that the name Zimmerman was often translated to Carpenter. He also pointed out that many family members have similar names because of the tradition of naming

the first son after his father’s father. “The second son is often named for his mother’s father,” said McCrea, who stated that within a few generations as many as 50 cousins might share the same name. “That really does make genealogy (research) difficult, especially early on,” he said. McCrea said that researching family members who came to America by ship is easier if the ancestor arrived after 1820, when the federal government began keeping lists of passengers for immigration purposes. “You might get an age, occupation, and a country,” shared McCrea, who said that lists created in the 1900s might include the

Puppy Raisers from pg 1 Many of the dogs that become PAD service dogs are goldadors - a mix of golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers. “We work with community breeders, and we breed as well in our program,” said Zoccola, who had 7-week-old Luxor - named for the Pixar office lamp - and Barley at the center during the interview. “Both Sumatra, the mom, and Easton, the dad, are from our program,” explained Zoccola. “Puppy raisers need good communication skills,” explained Zoccola. “Almost any lifestyle and activity level is wonderful as long as the individual is eager to learn.” According to Zoccola, the only other qualifications are that someone in the household be able to drive the puppy to the vet and to the center for training and that the raisers have internet access for training purposes, since the puppy raiser manual is online. “We have had wonderful teenage puppy raisers and wonderful retired puppy raisers,” said Zoccola, who noted that active families with small children are welcome as well. Bosserman noted that puppy raisers are required to attend two lessons a month at the Lititz location to work with PAD trainers. She specified that puppy raisers help dogs learn all the skills they need as service dogs beginning with sit and stay, and, when the dog is older, how to open doors and shut off lights. “We cover a lot (of expenses) for our puppy raisers,” she said, pointing out that food, vet costs, and grooming are included. “(Puppy raisers) need to provide treats, toys, dog beds, and lots of love,” she said.

Calderon added that because the youths are willing to work and grow as performers, he has been able to push and challenge them further. “And they have risen to each occasion,” he noted. Performer Elle Herson, age 14, said that she hopes audiences enjoy the enthusiasm she and other performers put into the show. “It’s fun to work with others who enjoy using the stage as an avenue to connect with other people,” she said. and social media. Now that the campers can visit the stable in person, they will be able to enjoy riding, grooming, and leading the horses, along with learning about the barn operations and helping keep the stable clean. According to Paskoff, there is nothing better than seeing a camper get on a horse. “Whether it’s for the first time or for the 10th time … he or she is riding the horse,” said Paskoff. “For many of our campers, it is also unconditional acceptance from the horses (that is so important).” Paskoff added that the GMTRC staff are patient and kind as they help support each child with the goal of a safe, positive experience. GMTRC program director Stephanie Fleck will be working with Aaron’s Acres campers for the first time this summer, and she is looking forward to the experience. “We are thrilled to have the campers back on the property,” she said. “We look forward to witnessing the physical and emotional interactions the campers will have when they encounter a horse.” Readers who would like to learn about Aaron’s Acres may visit www.aaronsacres.org. Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, is “beyond excited” to be taking Aaron’s Acres campers back to Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) this summer, and staff at GMTRC are happy to be welcoming groups back to the barn at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. Aaron’s Acres provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. GMTRC works to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs through equine-assisted activities.
Paskoff was quick to point out several of the benefits the horseback riding experience offers to campers, including increased self-esteem and confidence, improved flexibility, improved balance and strength, improved coordination, and the sense of independence, even with support staff walking along next to the camper. In 2020, COVID-19 restrictions limited physical interactions between the two organizations, although GMTRC was able to offer some virtual programming to Aaron’s Acres campers through Zoom calls

Cutler explained that the program, which went live on June 11, will run for about 12 weeks. On a regular basis, LCCF will choose random participants to receive $500 to invest in a cause or project that is important to them. “It may be something they shared in their snapshot or something else they care about,” said Spangler. In the future, the organization hopes to make the site even more interactive so that participants can communicate directly with each other. Lancaster Snapshot is an online initiative designed to encourage Lancaster County residents to share photos of people, places, and things they hold dear. “ We are deeply interested in connecting people across any number of demographics,” said Aaron Spangler, communications manager with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). “This idea was hatched in the midst of COVID-19 when we were literally and ideologically separated from each other,” he added, noting the project is focused on people introducing themselves by providing a snapshot as a way to a shared connection. “We wanted to tap into the humanness of each other,” said Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of LCCF. Those who wish to take part may visit www.lancastersnapshot.com, where they will be asked to submit answers to up to five questions using photographs. Spangler noted that participants may answer as few or as many questions as they wish. The questions are: Where do you live? What’s your favorite spot in Lancaster County? What’s one of your favorite things or possessions? What keeps you hopeful? What’s something you want to last forever? “The idea was to keep the questions open to get a varying degree of interpretation,” said Spangler, who noted there is space for a short caption. “There is no one way to answer these questions.” Participants will be able to visit the site, which includes a map of the county, to see their answers along with the answers of

ta, the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley does not limit itself to that area, but rather includes any township or borough that touches the banks of the Cocalico Creek, which includes Akron, Clay Township, and Denver. “Anything in this museum was made by or owned by someone who lived in the Cocalico Valley,” explained Bender. Clocks by well-known area clockmakers, Hibshman family items, and the Ephrata 12 o’clock steam whistle, which was blown from the Ephrata Borough Electric Light Plant on Church Street, are all on display. A children’s room includes a guessing game to help youngsters identify a toaster, a celery vase, a form for knitting stockings, and a boot jack from the past. Another room is dedicated to local industries, including saddle making, printing, dairy processing, and cigar making. One display recalls a radio station that operated on the square in Ephrata into the 1980s. Next door in the William
and Jemima Brossman Library, information is available on area genealogy, deeds, and more. “ We have microfiche available, digital searching, and an old-fashioned card catalog,” said Bender, who noted there is a nominal fee for nonmembers to use the library. Behind the Connell Mansion is a working print shop with the press from the Ephrata Cloister where Christmas cards and coasters are printed. More information about the museum and library may be found at www.cocalico valleyhs.org. The print shop’s website is www.conestoga press.com.

One case is dedicated to the family that built the home. Moore and Rebecca Connell had eight children, with five girls surviving to adulthood. None of the Connell daughters married, and when the last surviving child, Nora, died in the early 1960s, the historical society purchased the home. According to Bender, members of the society have painstakingly decorated and furnished areas of the home to make them look the way a Victorian home would have looked in the period. The parlor furniture is from other homes in the area, but the bedroom suite is original to the Connells, including the bedspread, curtains, and curtain rods with tiny mirrors attached. The bathroom with a commode and copper-lined tub is the same as when Nora lived there. “There is no water supply to the tub,” noted Bender, who said that heated water from the kitchen had to be brought up the back steps to fill the tub. Pathways Hybrid Homeschool students have been working with Brecknock Township to enhance Brubaker Park, a 90acre public use park located in northeastern Lancaster County. The students recently helped the Lancaster Conservation District plant trees and shrubs in the riparian buffer along the newly improved Black Creek section of the park. The stream improvement project began last fall as a joint effort between Lancaster Conservation District, Brecknock Township and the Exelon Corporation, which provided the funds. Students watched and learned as the improvement project progressed through various stages, and then students assisted in
plantings this spring. They will conduct stream studies over the next months and compare the results to stream studies they did prior to the improvement project. Pathways has also been instrumental in securing grants from the Sierra Club and the Schuylkill Highlands Conservancy to establish a native pollinator field on the east side of the park. Phase one was started last fall, the seeds were “snow sown” this winter, and the plants are beginning to grow. Phase two will involve clearing the next section of invasive honeysuckle and multi-flora rose. Community volunteers are welcome to join the students and can express interest

Tthe Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D), 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host youth and pre-college classes this summer. Over three weeks in July, beginning on Monday, July 12, the CCE will host dozens of weeklong, in-person youth art classes. Students in grades one to nine can take morning, noon, and afternoon classes, choosing from a variety of offerings in each timeslot. The daily schedule allows time for supervised lunches and snack breaks on campus between classes. This year, classes will return to an in-person format. Apart from foundational classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, this summer features a number of new classes on more specific topics, such as Animal Specimen Drawing, Urban and Public Art, Tabletop Game Design, Creating Art in Photoshop, and Exploring Cultures Through Craft. To better help parents balance work with their children’s time in camp, CCE has partnered with co-working space The Candy Factory, Warehouse D, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, to offer a discounted weekly
rate for adults with children in art classes. Parents are invited to drop their children off for camp in the morning, walk or drive two blocks to The Candy Factory to work, and then pick their children up when classes end. The pre-college courses are designed for students in ninth through 12th grades, allowing them to earn college credit. The two-week intensive classes with professional artists and faculty will be offered on campus or online or via a hybrid option. Classes will begin on July 12 and will run in two consecutive two-week sessions, finishing by Friday, Aug. 6. Among the pre-college options are foundational classes in figure drawing, observational painting, color theory, 3D modeling in Autodesk Maya, and portfolio preparation. Other pre-college classes focus on graphic design/visual branding, concept art, digital painting in Adobe Photoshop, video production, creative writing, introduction and advanced 2D animation in Adobe Animate, and printmaking. For a complete week-byweek schedule or to register, visit www.pcad.edu/cce.
