Working To Grant Wishes Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 By Ann Mead Ash

In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. In the meantime, Make-A-Wish needed to raise funds, preparing to

grant more than 450 local wishes when the organization is able. To make those wishes come true, the organization embarked on a virtual giving week, held from April 22 to 29. Area residents responded positively to the effort, and by mid-May nearly $100,000 had been raised mainly by 18 teams and 66 participants. Dennis Heron, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, said that the organization was “blown away” by the support. “On behalf of the children and families we serve, we thank everyone who donated for their dedication to the Make-A-Wish mission, especially during these challenging times,” said Heron.

On May 9, Make-A-Wish announced that the decision to turn the convoy into a virtual event had been made by staff and volunteer

convoy planning committee members, and that the August date had been set. The decision was based on concern for the Make-A-Wish children and the members of the community who visit the event. No carnival will be held; however, a modified small truck convoy featuring the top 30 drivers and key sponsors will leave the auto auction during the day. The convoy will be broadcast live from the Make-AWish Facebook page. In addition, organizers are working to create other ways to share parts of the traditional convoy festivities, such as the food, clowns, and carnival games. Readers who would like to know more about the convoy may search for “Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day

May was National Pet Month, and Mulberry Art Studios had put together an array of artists, vendors, treats for pets and their humans, rescue animals ready for adoption, and more to celebrate. Unfortunately, the second annual “We Love Our Pets” art show had to be pushed back and was rescheduled for July. July is right around the corner and Lancaster County recently moved into the yellow phase, but large gatherings are still not allowed to take place. While most of the studio’s spring and summer art offerings have been postponed to later in the year, owner April Koppenhaver and curator Stephanie Cole were determined to make the show still happen. Koppenhaver and Cole have created an online gallery show - a virtual exhibit that will showcase artwork and hopefully still raise funds for their animal rescue partner, The Sebastian Foundation. The virtual exhibit will be hosted at www.mulber ryartstudios.com and will feature about 150 pieces of art featuring beloved furry friends from more than 80 local artists, half of whom are youths. A variety of media will be represented. See Pet-Themed Art Show pg 4

Opening Date Set For Pet-Themed Art Show

By Ann Mead Ash

In 2018, Aaron’s Acres celebrated 20 years of providing socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, the six-week camp served 220 campers. For the past several years, Aaron’s Acres has been searching for a permanent home. Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, had looked at a number of county locations, but nothing suitable had been found. “We really wanted to be part of an inclusive community,” recalled

Located throughout Lancaster County are seven centers that exist to give adults and children with special needs from the Plain community a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. The workshops also offer the families of these individuals respite. The centers are Sunny Sunbeam, Caring Hearts, Penn Johns Sunbeam, Special Hearts Circle, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow. The more than 80 students who attend the centers range in age from 14 to 76. A staff of 35 caregivers works with the students. All the centers were closed in March under COVID-19 restrictions, but organizers of the centers hope to reopen them in the late summer or fall. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly auction. This year’s auction

Manheim Borough Library to be part of the center, and Paskoff reported that Aaron’s Acres has been invited as well. “Pleasant View will build a building, and we will have a condo relationship, said Paskoff, who noted that Aaron’s Acres hopes to utilize up to 7,000 square feet in the building. Paskoff noted that other plans for the cultural center include housing therapeutic alpacas in a barn area, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. Pleasant View also plans to expand a hydroponics program on the site. The farm property where Aaron’s Acres will be located offers additional possibilities to the organization. “We will have farm land to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers, said Paskoff, who sees the move as an opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began providing activities for 22- to 30year-olds in early 2019. “Aaron’s Acres has been for ages 5 to 21, but we are going to go to age 30, said Paskoff. “We want to have meaningful programs (for individuals in that age group), she noted, adding that farming, and working with animals, will be options along with taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to

Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a cafĂŠ to be manned by its participants. In addition to the benefits offered to Aaron’s Acres, Paskoff is excited about the purpose of the cultural center, noting that Hollinger hopes to bring other nonprofit organizations to the campus. “(It will be) a lot of different organizations coming together to create a strong community with people of all abilities and ages,â€? said Paskoff. “It’s a dream come true.â€? Paskoff said that if the way is clear, the cultural center will be completed by 2022. She noted that an aquatics center is planned for completion in 2023. For Paskoff, the move to the new center will signal an important shift for Aaron’s Acres. “The first 20 years, we just grew,â€? said Paskoff. “Now I feel for the next 20 years, we will launch and take off in a different way.â€? The exhibit will go live on First Friday, July 3. Viewers will be able to vote for People’s Choice in both adult and youth categories. A Best of Show will be chosen by the studio. The idea for “We Love Our Pets” grew from the love of one dog, Milo. Milo was rescued when he was a few years old and adopted by Koppenhaver’s nephew. Eventually, the nephew could no longer care for Milo, so the beagle mix was invited to live at Mulberry Art Studios, where he became the organization’s unofficial mascot. “Milo was an absolute gem,” Koppenhaver recalled. “He greeted all of our guests with his friendly warm tail wag or thump of the tail on the floor, his big brown eyes shining brightly. He would then proceed to go to our office and begin snoring.” Koppenhaver’s late husband, Charles E. Gaul II, enjoyed Milo’s company as well. “I often thought Milo was as much of a blessing to Charlie as Charlie was to Milo,” Koppenhaver recalled.

“Colby,” acrylic on canvas by Jill Brinser Milo died in November 2018, and less than two months later, Gaul passed away at age 93. Koppenhaver created the “We Love Our Pets” art show in memory of Gaul and Milo. “Our pets and our partners make a profound difference in our lives, and we wanted to raise money for an organization dedicated to bringing pets and people together,”

Koppenhaver said. The Sebastian Foundation was founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety and facilitates the adoption of unwanted animals, offering a second chance to pets. The foundation is committed to compassion toward other living beings and aims to create a better world by educating the public about the welfare of animals. Ellen Stark, a volunteer for The Sebastian Foundation, commented, “We hope that by learning about us and how an individual can get involved, we will be able to welcome more volunteers into our group as well as potentially connecting one of our sweet dogs with their forever family.” Stark noted that proceeds from the art show will help The Sebastian Foundation provide food, bedding, and veterinary care to animals that may have been neglected or abused. “We rely on the generosity of donors to give these guys a healthy and happy future,” she said. sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. The centers offer a variety of activities for students. At Sunny Sunbeam, located in Georgetown, the students gather three days a week from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day. Guided by up to five teachers, the students begin their days with devotions and then spend time in song. They make keychains and rolled-candy dolls. They also assemble hygiene kits for Mennonite Central Committee, and newspaper is torn up to create animal bedding. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, and students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they have learned at school. Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher makes lunch, and students are welcome to bring desserts or other courses. On nice days, lunch may be eaten outside in a fenced yard behind the center. Students take turns helping to mow the grass and tending the flower beds in the yard. Presently, organizers of the auction report that the parents and scholars really miss the centers. The closing has made it harder for the parents, and the students miss being out of the home with other people. “The special adults cannot wait until they may go back (to the centers), reported auction organizer Ben Kauffman. Readers who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-768-8497, 717-442-4144, or 717-354-2380. The auction number on the day of the sale will be 717-983-8415.

In the spring, right after COVID-19 restrictions were put in place, Rebecca Branle, owner of the Lititz Bikeworks, located at 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., No. 11, Lititz, and her crew were thinking about things they might do when the quarantine orders were lifted. “It was really quiet here in March,” recalled Branle, who noted that none of the shop employees knew what to expect in the future. “We knew we had time we aren’t always afforded, so we thought, ‘How can we use this time to be prepared for what’s to come?’” Branle said the employees talked about what they would need to do when it was time to reopen and have customers come into the shop again, but they also thought about fellow merchants that were not named essential businesses. “We knew we would bring in income fixing bicycles,” noted Branle. “(But then) we thought about (all the businesses) on Main Street that weren’t able to do anything.” Out of those discussions came an idea. “We thought, ‘Instead of throwing a big (reopening) event, why not work together with everyone else?’” Branle said. The result is the Small Business Slow Ride, which began on June 13 and will run until Tuesday, June 30. The event asks cyclists and others to go into downtown Lititz. “We’d love you to ride your bicycle to town, but this is far less about bicycles and far more about people,” read the invitation Bikeworks posted on Facebook on June 8. Organizers ask those visiting Lititz to eat at a local restaurant or purchase an item from a local business and then take a picture. “Let us know that you went,” said Branle. Participants should take a photo at the merchant’s location and post it to social media.

Rebecca Branle, owner of Bikeworks, located in Lititz, has organized the Small Business Slow Ride, which will run until Tuesday, June 30. The event is designed to bring shoppers to downtown Lititz as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

“Tag that merchant,” said Branle, who noted that participants should also tag Lititz Bikeworks and use the hashtag #smallbusinessslowride. Each posted photo that tags Lititz Bikeworks will be an entry into a contest Bikeworks will hold. “If you shop at Premium Bark Mulch $29.00 per scoop multiple retailers, make sure to take multiple picDyed Mulch (Black or Brown) $29.00 per scoop tures. U-GRO Learning Centres officially opened its Brownstown location on June 15. Located off Routes 222 and 272 at 4170 Barrett Blvd., Ephrata, U-GRO Learning Centres’ newest facility will serve up to 150 infants, toddlers, and preschoolers daily, as well as school age children for summer camp and before-and after-school programming. The 15,000-square-foot center, built by neighboring Benchmark Construction, features 10 modern learning classrooms, an 1,800square-foot indoor play space and a custom-designed 12,000-squarefoot outdoor playground. Children ages six weeks to 8 years old will be served daily through full- and parttime programs. A $3 million investment in the community, the center is expected to employ up to 32 fullor part-time employees. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, U-GRO has launched its COVID-Ready Centers initiative, which includes enhanced cleaning procedures using hospital-grade disinfectant, daily temperature screenings of team members and children, and the wearing of masks by all team members. With COVID-19 safety precautionary measures in place, an open house for interested families is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, from 9 to 11 a.m. Children and families will have the opportunity to see classrooms and indoor and outdoor play areas, and to learn more about enrollment for the summer and fall.
