Celebrating Progress anny Millette, director of donor relations, is clear about what The Potter’s House will celebrate when it holds its annual pork roast this summer. “(We will celebrate) the progress we have made so far and the new horizons that are ahead,” said Millette, who pointed to four wooden stakes tied with bright orange plastic ribbons located at one end of the Still Waters campus. “See the stakes? Those are the dimensions of the building, which will hopefully be two stories plus a basement.” Back in 2018, when The Potter’s House held its annual pig roast at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, the organization was dedicating the property with plans to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction. On March 25, 2020, Still Waters Recovery Center opened on the site. The building Millette referred to will be a second group home for up to eight students. The Potter’s House and The House of Ruth are separate

For Wanda Swarr, whose professional educational background includes decades of evaluating homeschoolers, competing with technology to educate youth had become a formidable obstacle. “I could no longer be as entertaining as video games, social media,” recalled Swarr. The solution was to combine learning with hands-on experiences in the great outdoors in a microhybrid educational alternative setting. Swarr started with a steering See Pathways pg 6

Lois Zigrang has written the book “Who, Me?” about her and her husband Walt’s mission experiences.

In the late 1960s, when Lois Zigrang and her husband, Walt, first learned of a missionary opportunity with Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in Angola, Lois thought, “Who me?” She pictured primitive living conditions. “I had never even camped,” she recalled. God’s plans for the couple and their young son did include Angola and later Mozambique, where they were forced to leave so their homes could be overtaken. “Who, Me?” is the title of a book by Lois that begins with her childhood in Pit-

man, N.J., and ends with Walt’s and her retirement to Lancaster. Along the way, Lois details how God changed them both through His faithfulness. Lois met Walt, shortly before he received his degree in citrus at Florida Southern College, where she was studying elementary education. The pair wrote to each other daily during the summer, became engaged in October, and married in December 1958. Lois gave birth to their son the following November, and Walt took his first job as an assistant grove production manager. See Zigrang pg 2

caused the family to flee. “It was getting too dangerous,” recalled Lois. When the United States offered refugee air flights, the family returned to Columbia, but back in Angola, the people they had taught were hoping the couple would return. “They kept ... asking us to come back,” said Lois. The Zigrangs applied to teach Bible classes and were shocked when they were quickly approved. The family remained in the war zone for 13 years before returning to the U.S. to work with AEF, which eventually became part of SIM, a missionary organization with representatives in a number of countries. In 1998, when SIM needed a field leader for Mozambique, the Zigrangs were asked to take the position because they knew Portuguese. The pair was there until the early 2000s, when they returned to the States permanently, eventually settling in Lancaster to be near their son and his children. Lois knew she had to share their story with others. “God kept pushing me to write the book,” she said. “The last two years, I knew if I didn’t get done it wasn’t going to get done.” “Who, Me?” is available at www.amazon.com. Lois is interested in sharing her story live. She can be reached at zigscfh@verizon.net.

“That’s when the Lord got a hold of us,” recalled Lois. She and Walt were attending a Christian Missionary Alliance Church near their home in Gainesville. “I was like a sponge,” said Lois, who had accepted Christ at age 15. “I had been waiting to learn the Word of God.” Walt, however, was miserable, not understanding Lois’ need to learn. Lois began praying about Walt’s relationship with the Lord. One day, the church pastor visited and talked to Walt. While Lois prayed in another room, Walt and the pastor knelt, and Walt accepted Christ. “From that moment on, he was hungry for the word of God,” said Lois. The Zigrangs met missionaries and wondered about God’s plan for them. Encouraged to look at Columbia Bible College, Columbia, S.C., the pair took a risk by attending the college while trying to sell their Gainesville home. “We were (at Bible college) two years. Our house didn’t sell, but we managed,” said Lois. When they finished school and joined AEF, they sold their house for cash, which they needed to begin their mission. The Zigrangs were sent to Catota, Angola, where they taught Bible classes and Walt worked in agriculture. In 1975, a communist uprising

Registration for the 2022 Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest is open. Youths and adults who create with wool are encouraged to enter the state contest. Any youth or adult who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool or other animal fibers is eligible to enter. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, Sept. 6. Several categories are available, including preteens ages 8 to 12, juniors ages 13 to 16,

seniors ages 17 to 24, and made for others, wherein both the model and contestant may be any age. Judging will take place on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex , 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judging will be based on several criteria, including the appropriateness of the garment to the contestant’s lifestyle, the garment’s fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design, the contestant’s presentation, construction quality, creativity in design and use of wool, and how well the garment conveys/promotes the beau-

ty, comfort, and versatility of wool. The winners of the junior and senior categories will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool contest in Fort Worth, Texas, in January 2023. The Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors provide the funding for prizes for the winners in each catego-

ry. All who register will receive a piece of wool yardage. Other prizes will also be awarded. There is a registration fee, plus an additional testing fee per fabric or yarn used. For details and a registration form, contact Linda Siegel at 717-274-1197 or linda@lebaweb.com. For more information, visit www.makeitwithwool.com.

committee of local parents in early 2019, and she opened the doors of Pathways School in late summer. Pathways is located on two campuses. Senior students study at Brubaker Homestead in East Earl and third-through eighth-grade students at Red Run Mennonite Church in Denver. The school offers language, science, math, and history at all grade levels. The 75 students attend in a two-week cycle that has them at school for three days one week and four the next. In between, they do lessons at home. Each school day, mornings focus on math, devotions, and language arts, and afternoons are devoted to history and science, much of which is handson and student-directed. Swarr noted that high school students have an opportunity to complete an independent project on a chosen interest.

“It can be experiential, experimental, entrepreneurial, or exploratory,” said Swarr. One student has restored a Jeep, another trained a therapy dog, and a third started her own business. “We have two focuses outside of our Christ-centered education,” said Swarr, noting that these are environmental stewardship and living history. “Our first job was to take care of God’s creation,” she stated, pointing out that middle-school science teachers have posed questions about the educational and ethical functions of zoos and then allowed children to research the answers. “(Students) had to design a zoo that would be educational and ethical and exhibit four different habitats,” said Swarr. An emphasis on living history could be witnessed at the lower-level campus, where

middle-school teacher Susan Shirk explained that students practiced for an Olympics event based on a social studies unit on ancient civilizations. Chariot races using wheelbarrows and shotput and discus competitions were held to see which students would be the best representatives. At the secondary level, history teacher Rachael Graves works hard to make history come alive by focusing on big picture themes and motives. Students are required to demonstrate early American life skills at Heritage Day in the fall. They also take part in the Lancaster County Long Rifles Rendezvous held at Muddy Run Park, where they live as if it were the early 1800s for several days. “They are in Colonial garb, and there is no running water, no phones, no electricity. They cook over an open fire.

They live history,” said Swarr. Looking ahead, Swarr sees the school as helping students to determine God’s calling for their lives. “We want to prepare our children for whatever path God has for them,” she said. Steve Loewen, chair of the Vintage Sights and Sounds New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show, remembers the exact moment more than 40 years ago when he suggested holding the show to New Holland Band representative George Weaver. “In 1981, we were doing the Memorial Day Pilgrimage,” recalled Loewen. “George was in the New Holland Band, and we were in the cemetery at Bowmansville. I said, ‘George, let’s have a car show in New Holland.’” Loewen explained that a show had been held for two years by a local organization, but he did not think that

would continue. “I wanted to keep the show going,” he said. “It had been extremely successful.” Weaver thought the car show would be a great project for the New Holland Band. “Music and antique cars go together well,” said Weaver, and he suggested the slogan “Vintage Sights and Sounds.” On Sunday, July 10, the 41st annual show will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. According to Loewen, the theme of the show will be “Pickup Trucks.” As in the past, vehicles to be judged must register by noon on Saturday, July 9. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and contains 50 Morgan Silver Dollars and just one coin alone, could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value according to The Official Red Book, A Guide Book of United States Coins. So, there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through all the coins. But you better believe at just $2900 these unsearched Bank Bags are a

Fulton Foundation Supports Education Program

ODC Presents Awards Occupational Development Center (ODC) executive director Gregg Richards presented the 2022 Olivia S. Stoner Awards on March 25, including awards that were originally scheduled to be given in 2020 and 2021. Created in 2019, the awards are given to individuals and businesses that “embody the spirit and mission of the ODC and co-founder Olivia S. Stoner and her commitment to creating a better life for individuals with developmental disabilities.” Awards were presented to Anna Wilson, posthumously; Jennifer Douglas; and Wile Plumbing. In addition to a

plaque, each honoree was given an original painting by one of ODC’s participants through the art program at Friendship Heart Gallery & Studio. The Wilson family has been involved in the ODC for nearly 40 years. Two of Anna’s sons have been participants at ODC - current participant Vince, who accepted the award on his mother’s behalf, and the late Rodney Wilson. Anna died in 2020. At the Stoner Award ceremony, the Wilsons were given a painting by Mary Lou. The Douglases have been involved with the ODC since See ODC pg 12

Participants in the presentation included (from left) Smokey Glover, J.D. LaRock, Curtis Myers and Scott Snyder.

The Fulton Forward Foundation, an independent, nonprofit private foundation funded by Fulton Bank, recently announced a $125,000 commitment to the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a global educational nonprofit focused on bringing the power of entrepreneurship to youths in low-income communities. The funds, which will be provided to the organization over a four-year period, will be used to support NFTE’s Aspiring Entrepreneurs Program. This initiative provides students from under-resourced communities throughout the Mid-Atlantic, which includes the Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Virginia regions, with access to the courses of NFTE’s Entrepreneurship Pathway and several key activities and components

of the NFTE student experience. According to NFTE CEO J.D. LaRock, students in the program will learn how to develop an original business plan for companies that can be launched in their own communities. Fulton’s grant and partnership with NFTE were announced at the Mid-Atlantic: Philadelphia Metro Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge on June 9 in Philadelphia, where student finalists pitched their businesses to a panel of judges. Fulton Bank president and COO Curtis Myers served as a VIP Finals judge and presenter at the event, which was co-sponsored by Fulton Bank. Also participating were Scott Snyder, a member of the Fulton Financial Corporation board of directors, and Smokey Glover, senior vicepresident/retail sales leader at Fulton Bank.
