Family Farm Days Attract Large Crowds Car Club To Host Annual Cruise By Ann Mead Ash

Michelle Walton, Lancaster County 4-H volunteer, has given her time to as many as four Family Farm Days events, but she was amazed at the number of people who attended on the first day of the three-day event this year. “The line to get on the shuttle is back to the chicken barbecue,” said an astonished Walton that day. In the past, an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people have attended the event, which is held at Oregon Dairy. Children who visited Family Farm Days on June 12, 13, and 14 at Oregon Dairy got the chance to enjoy rides and games while learning about Pennsylvania agriculture and meeting local dairy royalty.

The Lancaster County Cruisers meet at 6 p.m. on the second Sunday of every month to discuss all things related to automobiles. Afterward, the group

age. There is a cost to enter a vehicle, with a discount for those who preregister. The first 150 entries will receive dash plaques. Awards will be given to the top 10 vehicles and the top two cycles. All exhibitors will be eligible to win door prizes; drawings will be held throughout the day. “We have lots and lots of door prizes, and there are some nice cash prizes,” said club member Judy Andrews of Bird-in-Hand. Spectators may attend free of charge, but monetary donations will be accepted. A disc jockey will play oldies music, and vendors will sell a variety of food and other items. Vendor spaces are still available and may be reserved for a small fee. A muffler rap, which measures the loudness of an engine, will be held during the cruise. Burnouts will not be tolerated. New this year, club members will wear “staff” T-shirts. Event attendees will be invited to ask anyone with a staff shirt for assistance or for information about club membership. To register a vehicle, or to reserve a vendor space, call Jack Parke at 717-786-3923 or Pete Parke at 717-575-1494.

Bird-in-Hand. “You get a bunch of people with old cars together and then decide where to go eat.” With dining together inextricably linked with the car club experience, it should be no surprise that reducing hunger is one of the motivations behind the annual cruise that the Lancaster County Cruisers have held for nearly two decades. “The sole purpose is to support the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank,” explained Cruisers vice president Jack Parke of New Providence. “The secondary reason is for camaraderie and the sharing of (a love of) the cars.” The Cruisers typically give at least half of the proceeds from the annual cruise to the food bank; the group retains enough to host the following year’s show. The club also accepts donations of nonperishable food items at the event. The 19th annual cruise will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, at the Willow Street Fireman’s Field, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street. Interesting vehicles - including cars, trucks, and motorcycles - will be welcome for entry, with no restriction on

District, spent time watching over the chicks and then switched to overseeing the goat petting station. Cullen, who belongs to the Spinning Spurs 4H Club, said that goats can actually be very shy, but they also try to do what they want. The goat Cullen was struggling with wanted to eat one volunteer’s lunch. Bringing the goat back under the tent, Cullen continued explaining that goats are prized for their milk, cheese, and meat. Toward the back of the Kids’ Tent, Ashlee Dugan, PA Preferred coordinator with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, passed out a variety of educational materials, many of them designed to teach children about farming. “PA Preferred is the statewide branding program for Pennsylvania-grown products, said Dugan. The Buy Local papers that Dugan handed out included a variety of puzzles, games, and activities that children could complete to learn about mushrooms, healthy meals, and the process of making maple syrup. For adults, Dugan had stocked up on pamphlets on the Choose

nutritional value of milk. Mikayla Davis, Berks County Alternate Dairy Princess, and Berks County Dairy Ambassador Anthony Hix ran the COW-ABUNGA game, which gave players a chance to choose a question and win a prize. The duo asked questions such as “How much water does a cow drink in a day? (The answer is 25 to 50 gallons.) Another station included fitness activities such as jumping rope and kicking a soccer ball, with information about how milk can be used to refuel the body. The third station traced the path of milk from the farmer milking the cow to the supermarket shelf.

Walton volunteered to hand out scavenger hunt forms to children who entered the Kids’ Tent. “We hand them this (questionnaire), and they can (complete) it as a family, said Walton of the form. According to Walton, when children returned with the completed questionnaire, they had the opportunity to spin a wheel and receive a prize. “The goal is for the children to learn something and have more of an appreciation for farmers and what farmers do, explained Walton. Open House from pg 1 broadcast live from the venue. “Cavod is not just a dance class or a music lesson,” explained Dienner. “We’re creating a place where everyone can come and be a part of something. We’re building a community that is safe and family-oriented with excellent training.” Regular performances have been a hallmark of Cavod open houses in the past. This year, Dienner has lined up gymnastics, theater, dance, and handto-hand combat demonstrations every 30 minutes. In addition, characters from a variety of Cavod’s theater shows will be present to meet attendees. Cavod instructors will be present to meet visitors and discuss their teaching approaches. “We will have three new music instructors who will give private lessons in piano, guitar, and voice, as well as a new professional dance instructor,” noted Dienner. Every half hour, attendees will have a chance to win door prizes donated by local businesses, and at the end of the open house a grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away. Hand-to-Hand Combat, which teaches a defensive martial art, is one of Cavod’s newer offerings, along with Intro to Dance, designed for teenagers and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The weekly dance class will include ballet, jazz, modern, and hip-hop with the goal of teaching selfexpression to students with unique abilities. Free food options at the open house will include hot dogs, popcorn, and soda. A local vendor will provide free ice cream cones for those who register for classes that day or who have already registered for the fall session. Additional registration specials will include free popcorn for a performance season at Cavod for those who register by Monday, July 16. For those who register by Wednesday, Aug. 1, and pay for their first month’s tuition, a drawing will be held to win a free month’s tuition at Cavod. “It’s a fun day for the whole family,” noted Dienner. “The parents enjoy coming, and the children usually don’t want to leave.” That makes Dienner happy because it fits in with the academy’s goals. “We want people to feel they can be part of the Cavod community,” she said. Readers who would like to peruse the fall Cavod Academy schedule of classes may visit www.cavodacademy.com. Individuals who have questions may call 717-354-3355.

Wyatt, a golden retriever, was one of five service dogs that graduated from the UDS training program in a ceremony held on June 4. The members of Team Wyatt raised the puppy from 8 weeks to 18 months. Wyatt now lives with Ida Devers (front) and her husband, Gene (not pictured), a counselor who finds Wyatt’s presence helpful to some of his clients. By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The graduates on June 4 did not wear caps and gowns and they did not receive diplomas, but they all had four paws. This ceremony recognized the five canines that have successfully completed the UDS Service Dogs program. The large meeting room on the first floor of the new UDS facility at 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, was filled with UDS clients, sponsors, trainers, and supporters, all of whom were there to cheer on littermates Brodey, Reece, and Renner, as well as Murray and Wyatt. “It is emotional - believing in them and the difference they’ll make in the lives of their people,” commented Linda Rineer, who provided a puppy home for Reece and served as the secondary trainer for Brodey. The crop of graduates serve various functions for their owners. Brodey and Murray interact with students daily in the Northern York School District. Wyatt provides calm and comfort for clients during sessions at a counseling center in Philadelphia. Renner and Reece perform assistive tasks for their owners. Although their work differs, the dogs’ early training was similar. At 8 weeks old, each puppy was placed in a private home or

assigned to an inmate at a Pennsylvania prison. The animals learned dozens of commands and became comfortable with people. At 18 months, the dogs were transferred to secondary trainers, who honed their skills and taught them tasks specific to their work assignments. While there were numerous supporters in the audience at the graduation event, Wyatt’s were the most obvious. Karen Schatz had provided a puppy home for Wyatt, but she was not alone in the effort. Her household also included two elderly people who used walkers and canes, 3-yearold twins, and several other children ranging in age from 4 to 8. Schatz and the children attended the ceremony dressed in bright yellow T-shirts imprinted with the outline of a large dog bone surrounding the words “Team Wyatt.” “It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a team to raise a dog,” Schatz remarked during the ceremony. Ida Devers accompanied Wyatt to the ceremony, as her husband, Gene, was meeting with clients at the counseling center. The Deverses had contacted several service dog organizations after Gene had met with a woman who had experienced a traumatic event. He felt that a therapy dog might help her work through the trauma. The only response came from UDS, and Ida said the folks she spoke with were excited to help. After being matched with Wyatt, Gene and Ida took turns traveling to Lancaster to attend training sessions, and they brought him home full time in October 2017. “That first weekend, Gene said he had breakthroughs with clients he had for two to three years,” Ida marveled. “He’s great.” To express her gratitude to Schatz and Team Wyatt, Ida gave each team member a blue T-shirt commemorating Wyatt’s graduation. While the graduation is the first such event at the new facility, it will not be the last, and UDS Service Dogs staff members are excited for the possibilities. With nearly double the space, there is more room to move and to accommodate more dogs and clients. A dog run and eight kennels are onsite, and five more are scheduled to be installed by September. Staff members can sign out kenneled dogs for walks or to spend time in their offices. Office manager Lori Breece noted that there are plans to convert a room off the training room into a puppy cuddle corner. A ribbon cutting was held on June 6, and an open house is planned for September. “We’re really pleased with this building,” Breece remarked. For more information, readers may visit www.udservices.org or contact Breece at 717-715-8753 or lorib@udservices.org.
