A Tale Of Two Siblings Ressler’s Mill Tour Pays Tribute To Local History BY ANN MEAD ASH
“We are a best-kept secret,” said Linda Taylor, a tour guide at Ressler’s Mill in Mascot, a small village located southeast of Leola. “Anyone who has an interest in Lancaster County history would enjoy a visit here.” There has been a mill on the property at 2900 Stumptown Road, Ronks, since the 1730s. The last family to run a mill there purchased the site in 1865. Three generations of Resslers worked the mill until 1977, when Franklin Ressler and his sister, Anna, ceased operations and moved to Landis Homes, taking one suitcase each. W hat they left behind along with Franklin’s shrewd investments - has allowed the mill property to become a historical treasure in Lancaster County. “I know the mill, and the mill knows me,” said Franklin in a video that was made shortly before his death at age 92 in 1994. The mill - also known as the Mascot Roller Mills which processed both corn and wheat,
“Anyone who has an interest in Lancaster County history would enjoy a visit here.” The name “Mascot” is associated with the post office, approved by John Wanamaker, who was postmaster general when the post office was set up. According to Taylor, the name “Mascot” was based on a dog in a play that Jacob and Annie Ressler - parents of Anna and Franklin - saw when they traveled to New York City to be married by the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. During a tour, Taylor explained the workings of the mill, noting that grain was stored on the second floor. “(Grain) was loaded in a barrel and hoisted up using waterpower,” she
noted, adding that water was channeled to run the water wheels and grinding stones. “In the early 1900s, the water wheels were replaced with water turbines,” explained Taylor. Conveyor belts took the meal upstairs to be sifted, with finer product used for food and coarser meal becoming animal feed. After Anna and Franklin moved out, the home was preserved as they left it for the sake of history. Among the artifacts they left behind is the Conestoga wagon bell Anna used to summon Franklin for lunch. Visitors can also see the summer kitchen where meals were cooked and the root cellar, which can keep eggs and butter at a constant temperature year-round. The children’s ice skates and the wedding flowers that belonged to Annie, Franklin and Anna’s mother, preserved in wax, are also on display. The Ressler Mill is currently open for tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Wednesday through Saturday. More information may be found at www.resslermill.com.

Amphitheater Foundation Plans Concerts BY ANN MEAD ASH
During 2020, the amphitheater at Long’s Park sat empty. For 2021, Dave Wauls, president of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation, is looking forward to filling the venue with eight different bands. “Everybody is excited, and we anticipate bigger crowds,” said Wauls, who noted that the food trucks will be back for hungry concertgoers. CV Archer Is Off To The Olympics
CONESTOGA VALLEY EDITION
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Casey Kaufhold, a rising senior at Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS), is about to have the experience of a lifetime. The 17-year-old will join other members of the 2021 U.S. Olympic Archery Team in Yumenoshima Park in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday, July 23, to take part in the planned competitive events. “(Archery) started as a family thing we would do for fun,” said Kaufhold, whose family owns Lancaster Archery on Old Philadelphia Pike in Smoketown. “We had targets set up in the backyard, and I started shooting when I was 3.” By the time Kaufhold was 8, the fun had turned a little more serious as she began taking part in competitions. “When I was 13, I did my first international competition, and since then I have been on some international teams,” explained Kauf hold, who began going to school online in her freshman year, usually attending in person during the fall semester and virtually in the spring when she was competing. Kaufhold noted that she practices archery about five hours daily, adding that CVHS has been “really

She described the sections of the bow, noting that the riser connects all the pieces together and the stabilizers add weight. A spotting scope allows her to see where arrows are going so she can adjust for conditions, such as wind. “I can look through the scope and fix things,” she said. Looking beyond Tokyo, Kaufhold has plans to focus on her senior year at CVHS. “I will take a lighter competition

After graduation, she is considering a career that involves a pointed instrument reminiscent of an arrow, but much smaller. “I picked up sewing during the lockdown, and I really enjoy it,” shared Kaufhold. “I make my own clothing sometimes, and I have made things for friends and family.” She is considering a future as a seamstress, tailor, or fashion buyer.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the four stages of Olympic trials for archery were divided, with the first two stages being held in 2019 and the last two being held at the end of May in Salt Lake City, Utah. “There’s a qualification round and then eliminations and team rounds,” explained Kauf hold, who noted that the trials are set up to simulate events so that organizers can select team members to compete in certain areas. Kaufhold left for Paris, France, on June 10 to qualify for a team spot. She expected to be in Paris for three weeks and then return home for a little over a week before leaving for Tokyo. Kaufhold explained that at the Olympics, archery competitors shoot from a standard 70 meters. “The qualification round is 72 arrows, and each arrow is worth a possible 10 points,” she said. The 64 archers are divided into brackets based on their scores to compete against each other. “There are also team rounds,” said Kaufhold, noting that a mixed team will include a man

Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swimat-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road. You’ll find links to all the

Part of the fun of owning an antique, vintage, or classic car is having a story to tell about that vehicle. Greg Dyer, who has been a head judge at the New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show for 30 years, has a story about his 1963 Thunderbird, and his grandson Harry Townsend has a story to go with his 1987 Dodge D150 pickup. Both cars will be featured on the dash plaque for the 2021 car show, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 11. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. According to organizer Steve Loewen, the theme of the show will be “1970-71 Muscle Cars.” “Those are the pinnacle years for muscle cars,” said Loewen. “We are calling it the Muscle Car Era.” Dyer and Townsend worked together to restore both the Thunderbird and the truck. Dyer first saw the Thunderbird as a middle school student when it was owned by the father of a classmate. “Years later, I worked with the guy
who owned it. His sons had torn it apart, so when I bought it there was no engine, transmission, or interior,” Dyer explained, adding that the owner had all the parts. “That was 1994,” he recalled, standing proudly by the now-complete white Thunderbird with a black top and red interior. Townsend has been associated with the car show since he was featured in a newspaper photo in a miniature car as a child. He purchased his now brightly painted truck in February 2017 for $800. “It was my first truck,” recalled Townsend, whose grandfather added that in 2017 the then high school student did not yet have a driver’s license. “It barely ran, and it had a lot of rust,” Townsend said. “I am awfully proud of it (now).” Between 9 a.m. and noon on July 11, vintage cars will line up on the show field, while hitand-miss engines and vintage tractors will be on view in the park. Antique tractors and hitand-miss engines that are not being judged may be displayed free of charge. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Judging for the People’s Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m. For a

Brad Zuke (left) and Dave Wauls are looking forward to the Long’s Park Concert Series that will be held on Sunday evenings in July and August.
Concerts are planned beginning Sunday, July 11. Performances will start at 7:30 p.m. each Sunday through Aug. 29. Brad Zuke, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that each year the group endeavors to bring acts that represent a wide range of musical genres. In 2020, many of the bands that were booked to play just happened to be fronted by women. “It looked like it was going to be the year of the woman,” noted Zuke. “When everything was canceled, agents and bands wrote back and said, ‘Can we just move ahead to next year?’ That was our starting point (in creating this year’s schedule).” Indeed, only The Big Takeover, a reggae band scheduled to perform on Aug. 1, was not on the 2020 roster. Zuke noted that contracting bands to play the venue can take several years. He listed scheduling factors for both the performer and the amphitheater, along with travel arrangements and current visas for the performers. “Several years ago, we had Old Blind Dogs from Scotland (play a concert),” he said. “It took us six years to finally have them perform here.” This year, the opening concert on July 11 will feature Bakithi Kumalo, a South African bass player who was one of the top session musicians in his country when Paul Simon went there to develop his album “Graceland” in 1985. “Simon invited
him to America to finish studio sessions,” said Zuke of the Grammy Award-winning Kumalo, who eventually settled in the U.S. Both Maggie Rose, who will perform on July 18, and Thornetta Davis, who will perform on July 25, are award-winning artists. “Maggie is amazing,” stated Zuke, who noted that Rose makes her home in Nashville. “You don’t typically think of funk, soul, blues, and rock in terms of the Grand Ole Opry,” he noted, adding that Rose has appeared there many times. Davis, a recipient of several Detroit Music Association awards, is known as that city’s Queen of the Blues. Additional August concerts will include Southern country singer Paul Thorn on Aug. 8. Vanessa Collier, who will play on Aug. 15, has received blues music awards as an instrumentalist for horn, but Zuke noted that she also plays guitar and sings. He stated that the Kenny Rogers Band, which will appear on Aug. 22, is the real deal. “(These) are the musicians that played with Kenny as opposed to being a cover band. These guys helped write the music and played the original music,” he said. On Aug. 29, a Live Aid Tribute Show will celebrate one of the world’s biggest concerts by featuring talented local musicians. Readers who would like to know more about the concerts, which will follow current health protocols, may visit www.longspark.org.

Touching Lives With Joy Aaron’s Acres Holds Live And Virtual Camps BY ANN MEAD ASH
“It’s so good to be back (at camp) in person,” said Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. During 2020, Aaron’s Acres held virtual camp for 50 campers, but this year, six weeks of weekday summer camp are being held at the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park, along with a two-week virtual camp. The camp has programs for children, adolescents, and adults ages 5 to 21 with developmental disabilities. Camp began June 21, and two-week sessions will be held through Friday, Aug. 6, with the exception of the week that began on July 5 because of the holiday. Paskoff explained that when the organization asked the state for approval to run the camp, COVID-19 restrictions were more stringent, including wearing masks and COVID-19 testing for those who had not been vaccinated. “They are lighter now,” said Paskoff on the second day of camp. She added that the number of campers was limited by restrictions as well. “We would normally have 80 campers at each session, but we had to cut back, so we only have 30,” she said. Calling the in-person camps “basic,” Paskoff explained that sessions are held each weekday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the morning, campers use
the pool in Manheim or take part in therapeutic horseback riding at Greystone Stables in Leola. In addition to swimming, activities include group games, crafts, snacks, and music therapy. Special events will include visits from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, a petting zoo, an entertainer, and more. “(These are) all activities we can have here (at Manheim),” said Paskoff, who noted that the 1-to-2 child-to-staff ratio is still in effect, and a nurse is on site. “Every child who wants to come can come, and we can meet that child’s needs,” Paskoff stated. In the spring of 2020, when parents reported that children were having a hard time adjusting to school being closed, Paskoff and program director Elaine Burnett worked to create meaningful virtual and touch-point experiences for campers. “We had 50 kids on the screen (at virtual camp),” reported Paskoff, who encouraged staff and visitors to wear their Aaron’s Acres yellow T-shirts because she knew the color would comfort campers. “While the activities were going on, staff members would call a name and say, ‘Pick that up to show it. It’s beautiful.’” Virtual activities included cooking, scavenger hunts, bingo, and singing. “It was better than we ever thought,” said Paskoff.
Aaron’s Acres campers enjoy the Manheim Park pool each weekday morning during the six weeks camp is held.
Touch-point activities included surprise fall and spring visits to campers’ homes. Dressed in their Aaron’s Acres blue and yellow gear, the five members of the administrative team used the organization’s van to bring each child a special gift. Parents also received hot chocolate in the fall and the makings of ice cream
sundaes in the spring. Burnett called ahead, asking parents to send the child to the door when the bell rang. “We wanted it to be a surprise,” said Paskoff. “(Each camper was) so excited that Aaron’s Acres was at their house.” More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

Veritas Academy Purchases Building Veritas Academy, a preschool through 12th-grade classical Christian school, has announced that it won the bid
to purchase its building, situated at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola. The school has been the largest tenant in the Hillcrest
Members of the Veritas Academy community celebrated the school’s recent purchase of the building it has occupied for nearly 20 years.
Avenue property for nearly 20 years. Upper Leacock Township sold the facility, which was originally the Leola Elementary School, via public auction on April 27. The school community rallied over the past several months to raise the necessary funds to purchase the property, with hopes to preserve the classroom and outdoor spaces that students, parents, and teachers have grown to love over the years. Hand-painted murals and crafted decor throughout the building have added special touches that enhance the school’s uniquely themed curriculum. The courtyard and expansive back field have provided ideal

spaces for both learning and fun. Parents, staff, alumni, students, and friends of the school not only participated financially in the acquisition of the building, but also contributed in prayer for the school. Over the past two and a half decades, the school has experienced strong growth, including entering the 202122 school year with its highest enrollment ever, and Veritas hopes that owning this building will allow it to better serve current and future students with improved and expanded facilities for learning and extracurricular activities. Veritas hopes to establish a place that connects families with truth, beauty, and goodness for Christ’s calling. To learn more about the school, visit www.veritas academy.com.
According to Rowland, regular meals are available for a nominal fee per day with specials - which are prepared with a specific diet in mind costing a little more. “(Meals are delivered) Monday through Fridays and holidays,” said Rowland, who noted that the number of meals delivered varies. “We have New Holland, Leola, and Terre Hill routes, and the Terre Hill is a very long route,” she noted. Generally, the Leola route has nine or 10 recipients, while New Holland has 14, and Terre Hill has about a dozen. Most recipients receive both lunch and dinner. Lunches usually include a sandwich, such as ham and cheddar, tuna or egg salad, or another variety of meat. A dinner entree may include sesame chicken, peapods, and rice. “The menu varies a lot,” noted Rowland, who
added that soup, meatloaf, or a pasta dish, such as lasagna, may be among the dinner selections. “They have a fish that looks really good for the entree (sometimes),” said Rowland, who added that most recipients receive milk if they do not have a lactose issue. Rowland, who coordinates the deliveries with her friend Judy McKinley, said that drivers are scheduled for certain days and routes. “We like one driver and a helper to run the meals to the door,” she said, adding that students and others sometimes act as runners to fulfill community service requirements. Volunteer drivers and runners are needed to deliver meals. Readers who are interested in volunteering may call 717-354-9150. Individuals in need of receiving meals may call 717-392-4842.

Greystone Manor Honors Volunteers Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), a nonprofit organization with a mission to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs through equine-assisted activities, held an event to honor 18
volunteers on June 5. The Carol Henkel Memorial Winners’ Circle event was sponsored by Primitives by Kathy, which also donated gift bags for the honorees. GMTRC’s volunteers, who
help with lessons, training, special events, and facilities maintenance, were critical in helping GMTRC through the COVID-19 pandemic. The 18 volunteers honored at the event gave a total of more than 150 hours of service in 2020. Located in Upper Leacock
Township, GMTRC has 11 therapeutic horses and six certified instructors who serve people with varying cognitive, physical, emotional, and developmental diagnoses. For information on becoming a volunteer, visit www.greystone manortrc.org.

Giant Expands Flashfood App Availability The Giant Company recently announced that it is rolling out the Flashfood app to all Giant and Martin’s stores following a successful pilot. Designed to reduce food waste and help customers save money on fresh food items nearing their bestbefore date, the Flashfood partnership has helped the Giant Company divert more than 250,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli and bakery products that are nearing their best-before date at significantly reduced prices. First introduced in May at four Giant stores in Lancaster, Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores. The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, with additional stores joining each month. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their best-before dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store. In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners.
