Celebrating A Milestone

When paleontologist Chris Haefner of West Hempfield found a fossil in a church yard in York, he suspected he had uncovered something special. “It was an unusual creature,” said Haefner, who eventually learned the fossil represented an animal previously unknown to mankind. “It was not just a new species. It was a new genus - a new family,” said Haefner.

Discovery from pg 1 The creature is now officially called “Yorkicystis haefneri” - after York, where it was found, and Haefner, who found it. Haefner will have an exhibit about the fossil and speak about his find at the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club’s Christmas in July Extravaganza to be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A nominal fee will be charged to enter. Haefner has been involved with rocks and minerals since the age of 12, when his uncle employed him as a rock cracker in making rock and mineral boxes to be sold at museums, including the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Haefner founded the countywide club with his wife, Cathy, who now serves as treasurer, in 2013. At the May 2014 meeting, the group learned that the Cityview Church in West York had moved rock to a specific area of land when a new build-

ing was constructed. “The rock (in that area) is Kinzers shale,” explained Haefner. “It looked fossiliferous,” he noted, adding that the rock features rare echinoderms -

marine invertebrates. Haefner gained permission to complete pocket-hole digs of about 18 inches deep, and he with help from Cathy, set about searching for fossils. He found the first to two Yorkicystis fossils in May 2017, and posted a

photo on his Facebook page. A “friend” saw the post and alerted Dr. Samuel Zamora, a paleontologist specializing in echinoderms who has worked at the Smithsonian. Haefner surrendered the fossil, and later a second specimen, to be studied by Zamora, along with two researchers from London and one from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The fossil now resides at the Natural History Museum in London. “The only way to get something noted and named is to give it to science,” said Haefner, who said he wishes that York had a museum that could be home to the fossils. “In York there have been profound discoveries,” noted Haefner, citing the

Good’s Store in Ephrata has moved to a new location, 1127 S. State St., where the former Kmart store was located. The building will be shared with Dutch-Way Farm Market, which plans to open in late summer. The portion of the building occupied by Good’s Store has about 34,000 square feet of retail space, which is nearly four times larger than the former store, located at 1686 W. Main St. With the larger retail space, the new Ephrata store offers an expanded selection of merchandise across the board. Clothing and footwear are prominent categories, with brands including Carhartt, Wrangler, Under Armour, Carolina, Muck Boots and Skechers. The selection of work boots has also expanded considerably. Also, men’s suits are available for the first time at the Ephrata store. The new store also features a larger selection of home goods, including kitchen items, canning supplies, cleaning products, bed and bath items and curtains. Among the items for sale are KitchenAid appliances, Ball canning supplies, OXO and Norpro kitchen gadgets, Achim mini blinds and Capitol Earth Rugs. There is also an expanded selection of home décor items, candles, gifts, cards and books, including children’s books, cookbooks and Bibles. The toy department has more games, puzzles and toys from Lego, Melissa & Doug, and Ertl, and now

330 N. Ronks Rd., Bird-In-Hand, PA 17505

offers plush toys for sale. Possibly the greatest changes for the new store are seen in the hardware, sporting goods and lawn and garden categories. For the first time, the Ephrata store offers paint, including Clark+Kensington and RustOleum paints, and Wooster and Purdy paint applicators. There are power tools, including DeWalt tools, electrical and plumbing supplies, National Builders Hardware products and Hillman fasteners. Also for the first time, the Ephrata store is able to cut keys, including high-security auto keys. The selection of lawn and garden products, such as solar-powered outdoor décor and birding supplies, has been greatly expanded, and for the first time, Traeger grills and grilling supplies are available. The new store offers more pet supplies and has added Blue Buffalo pet food to go with Ex-Cell and Taste of the Wild. In the sporting goods department, there are more options from Coleman, Igloo and Franklin Sports,

and, as before, there are Spikeball products, Bell biking accessories and Innova disc golf products. While much has changed with the relocation of the Ephrata store, Good’s Store continues to aim to offer a wide selection of essential goods for the entire family at low prices. Also avail-

Long’s Park Ampitheater from pg 1 In celebration of the organization’s anniversary, a gala and art auction will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Tickets, which will go on sale on Monday, Aug. 1, at www.longspark.org, will be limited. Board member Janice Henry is chairing the event. A segment of the event will be devoted to a presentation by well-

known local architect Gregory Scott, whose firm originally designed the amphitheater. Scott will look back on the history of the iconic building, which began when the Sertoma Club put together a leadership team in 1959 and then built and commissioned the amphitheater before turning it over to the city. The live auction of original art, which will benefit the foundation,

CUSTOM DIMENSION OAK & POPLAR LUMBER • Bark Mulch

will showcase members of the Echo Valley Art Group. A highlight of that portion of the event will be the sale of a commissioned piece created by artist Lisa Madenspacher. Her rendition of the amphitheater pays homage to the concerts and fireworks with which the building is associated. Another auction item will poke fun at the amphitheater’s long association with wild birds. “We have a bird

feeder that was created as a fundraiser,” said Ellis, who noted that the roof of the feeder has the same profile as the amphitheater. “We are calling it an amphi-feeder.” The feeder was fabricated and painted by Viocity Group and donated by Woodstream Corporation. Food for the gala will be created by former White House chef John Moeller, known for owning and preparing cuisine at the Greenfield Restaurant and Bar.

Manheim Township Performing Arts (MTPA) participants past and present are invited to attend a celebrate of the retirement of Mark and Beth Wagner, who directed MTPA from 1987 to 2020. Mark also taught music, choir and music electives at Manheim Township High School during those years. The celebration, “The Final Curtain Call,” will take place at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 6:30 p.m. The program will feature musical numbers from past shows as well as video tributes. Light dessert refreshments will be available. This event was originally planned to occur just before the COVID shutdown and was intended to be centered on the Wagners’ last show, “Mamma Mia!” They were not able to share that show with the public due to the pandemic. The celebration has been reimagined by a group of MTPA alumni spanning decades. MTPA students and alumni are invited to recognize the impact the Wagners have had on their lives. “They helped me to become a good ensemble member,” said Brian Ratcliffe, Class of 2007, who spent several years as a professional actor. “Being part of an ensemble means honoring and valuing the contributions of each

Erin Ritter, Class of 2004, emphasized the Wagners’ influence, as well. “The time, guidance, and wisdom that the Wagners shared with each student produced such a high-caliber show year after year,” she noted. “I want them to close this chapter in their lives knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that it mattered that those moments we all shared in MTPA are not only remembered, but cherished.” “Mark and Beth ... taught me the valuable lesson of how to fail and face rejection with grace,” noted Rebecca Rutt, Class of 2007. “(They) modeled for us that everyone had value and that the group was greater than the

I owe my career in the arts to the two of them,” added Lee, who is now a documentary film editor. “The Wagners taught me how to engage in any creative process with integrity. I’ve used their lessons about passion, honesty, and work ethic on every film I have worked on and ever will work on.” Michael Thatcher, Class of 2005, echoed Lee’s sentiment. “The Wagners are the single greatest reason I’m making a living as an actor in New York City,” he said. “They believed in my talent before anyone else. ...
