screen (at virtual camp),” reported Paskoff, who encouraged staff and visitors to wear their Aaron’s Acres yellow T-shirts because she knew the color would comfort campers. “While the activities were going on, staff members would call a name and say, ‘Pick that up to show it. It’s beautiful.’” Virtual activities included cooking, scavenger hunts, bingo, and singing. “It was better than we ever thought,” said Paskoff. Touch-point activities included surprise fall and spring visits to campers’ homes. Dressed in their Aaron’s Acres blue and yellow gear, the five members of the administrative team used the organization’s van to bring each child a special gift. Parents also received hot chocolate in the fall and the makings of ice cream sundaes in the spring. Burnett called ahead, asking parents to send the child to the door when the bell rang. “We wanted it to be a surprise,” said Paskoff. “(Each camper was) so excited that Aaron’s Acres was at their house.” More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

Aaron’s Acres campers enjoy the Manheim Community pool each weekday morning during the six weeks camp is held.

In the last five years, the ministry originally known as House of His Creation (HOHC) and briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), has been through a number of changes. After becoming FORM in 2016, the ministry moved from Lititz Pike to the Brickerville area, but as of late 2019, the name had reverted to HOHC, and in February 2021, the ministry moved to the site of a former bed-andbreakfast at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz.

Debbie Saylor, curator for the Blue Rock Heritage Center, believes that she and Blue Rock president Charlie Douts bring together the expertise needed to preserve Washington Boro area history. “My specialty is Native American (cultures), but Charlie knows local history, so it’s a good partnership,” she said.

“It’s so good to be back (at camp) in person,” said Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. During 2020, Aaron’s Acres held virtual camp for 50 campers, but this year, six weeks of weekday summer camp are being held at the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park, along with a two-week virtual camp. The camp has programs for children, adolescents, and adults ages 5 to 21 with developmental disabilities. Camp began June 21, and twoweek sessions will be held through Friday, Aug. 6, with the exception of the week that began on July 5 because of the holiday. Paskoff explained that when the organization asked the state for approval to run the camp, COVID-19 restrictions were more stringent, including wearing masks and COVID-19 testing for those who had not been vaccinated. “They are lighter now,” said Paskoff on the second day of camp. She added that the number of campers was limited by restrictions as well. “We would normally

have 80 campers at each session, but we had to cut back, so we only have 30,” she said. Calling the in-person camps “basic,” Paskoff explained that sessions are held each weekday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the morning, campers use the pool in Manheim or take part in therapeutic horseback riding at Greystone Stables in Leola. In addition to swimming, activities include group games, crafts, snacks, and music therapy. Special events will include visits from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, a petting zoo, an entertainer, and more. “(These are) all activities we can have here (at Manheim),” said Paskoff, who noted that the 1-to-2 child-to-staff ratio is still in effect, and a nurse is on site. “Every child who wants to come can come, and we can meet that child’s needs,” Paskoff stated. In the spring of 2020, when parents reported that children were having a hard time adjusting to school being closed, Paskoff and program director Elaine Burnett worked to create meaningful virtual and touch-point experiences for campers. “We had 50 kids on the

Parents, staff, alumni, students, and friends of the school not only participated financially in the acquisition of the building, but also contributed in prayer for the school. Over the past two and a half decades, the school has experienced strong growth, including entering the 202122 school year with its highest enrollment ever, and Veritas hopes that owning this building will allow it to better serve current and future students with improved and expanded facilities for learning and extracurricular activities. Veritas hopes to establish a place that connects families with truth, beauty, and goodness for Christ’s calling. To learn more about the school, visit http://www .veritasacademy.com.

Rowland, who coordinates the deliveries with her friend Judy McKinley, said that drivers are scheduled for certain days and routes. “We like one driver and a helper to run the meals to the door,” she said, adding that students and others sometimes act as runners to fulfill community service requirements. When Joy Rowland, a volunteer with ELANCO Meals on Wheels, arrives at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, on Monday mornings between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., usually the first thing she does is begin to unload the insulated box of meals that has been delivered from the Meals on Wheels Lancaster location on Manheim Pike. Rowland divides the bags of lunches and dinner entrees according to the type of meal and the route where it is to be delivered to prepare for the drivers and runners who will arrive between 9 and 9:20 a.m. According to Rowland, regular meals are available for a

nominal fee per day with specials - which are prepared with a specific diet in mind costing a little more. “(Meals are delivered) Monday through Fridays and holidays,” said Rowland, who noted that the number of meals delivered varies. “We have New Holland, Leola, and Terre Hill routes, and the Terre Hill is a very long route,” she noted. Generally, the Leola route has nine or 10 recipients, while New Holland has 14, and Terre Hill has about a dozen. Most recipients receive both lunch and dinner. Lunches usually include a sandwich, such as ham and cheddar, tuna or egg salad, or another variety of meat. A dinner entree may include sesame chicken, peapods, and rice. “The menu varies a lot,” noted Rowland, who added

Congratulations to 2-year-old Lyra and her human, Peggy Buhalo of East Earl. Lyra received the most votes on our 2021 Pawsome Pet contest. According to Buhalo, Lyra is pawsome because she has a unique personality. She is a resident of the University of Pittsburgh as an emotional support cat. She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games. For their win, Lyra and Peggy will receive a $50 gift card to Stoltzfus Feed & Supply in Gap.

Through all the changes, the mission of the ministry has been to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. In its new location, HOHC will continue to provide those services through maternity housing for women age 18 and up - especially women leaving abusive situations - who are in the first two trimesters of pregnancy and have been sober for several months. The women must also be willing to consider adoption and parenting plans and to take advantage of growth opportunities, and be educated toward reaching goals. Client housing for four women is provided on the second floor of the house, where each room has a private bathroom. The family living model includes individualized case management and education about basic life skills, finances, and parenting options, along with recreational activities. Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, noted that a change from former programming models is the aftercare services that are available for one year after the mother is discharged from the program. “That means that I would come and do a home visit and assess how they’re doing,” said Gibbs. “We follow through with things they may have started and provide support so they don’t feel out there and alone.” Mothers who choose to actively parent often need to

learn how to do that while working, but according to executive director Matthew Neff, women who make an adoption plan may be especially in need of aftercare. “When a woman makes an adoption plan, it is very emotionally hard,” said HOHC house mom and Matthew’s wife, Callie. “She may need help to navigate the roles and the relationships around that.” Callie noted that when the pregnancy was not the woman’s first, other issues may be involved. “(When a woman has) multiple children (who are) part of their story, then it becomes reunification or rebuilding relationship with children they haven’t actively been parenting,” said Callie. “Those children wouldn’t necessarily live here, but we would help (the woman) negotiate toward a goal that may include parenting rights in some cases.” Aftercare program goals include education in mindful parenting, empowerment to access community resources, and engaging parents to connect with other parents. HOHC offers parenting classes called “Parenting Journey” and “Parenting Journey for Fathers.” The 12week experiential programs include guided discussion to develop knowledge and skills. More information about HOHC may be found at www.hohc.org. Those with specific questions may email mail@hohc.org or call 717626-0263. Readers who have questions about parenting classes may email Michelle@hohc.org or call 347-206-3617.

“One of the reasons I wanted to start my own organization was to enable and empower volunteers to be involved in the whole process (of raising and training service dogs),” said Linzey Zoccola, who founded Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD) in 2009. Zoccola and assistant director Ashley Bosserman have recently begun working with dogs, volunteer trainers, and clients in the organization’s new Warwick Center offices in Lititz. Many of the dogs that become PAD service dogs are goldadors - a mix of golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers. “ We work with community breeders, and we breed as well in our program,” said Zoccola, who had 7-weekold Luxor - named for the Pixar office lamp - and Barley at the center during the interview. “Both Sumatra, the mom, and Easton, the dad, are from our program,” explained Zoccola.

“Puppy raisers need good communication skills,” explained Zoccola. “Almost any lifestyle and activity level is wonderful as long as the individual is eager to learn.” According to Zoccola, the only other qualifications are that someone in the household be able to drive the puppy to the vet and to the center for training and that the raisers have internet access for training purposes, since the puppy raiser manual is online. “We have had wonderful teenage puppy raisers and wonderful retired puppy raisers,” said Zoccola, who noted that active families with small children are welcome as well. Bosserman noted that puppy raisers are required to attend two lessons a month at the Lititz location to work with PAD trainers. She specified that puppy raisers help dogs learn all the skills they need as service dogs beginning with sit and stay, and, when the dog is older, how to open doors and shut off lights. “We cover a lot (of expenses) for our puppy raisers,” she said, pointing out that food, vet costs, and grooming are included. “(Puppy raisers) need to provide treats, toys, dog beds, and lots of love,” she said. PAD has developed a timeline for puppies that matches

them with puppy raisers at two months old after they have begun to be housetrained. At 12 months, the dogs undergo an evaluation, and at 14 months, X-rays are taken of hips and elbows, which are then evaluated by orthopedic veterinarians befor the dogs move forward with the program. Because it’s very important to PAD that clients are partnered with dogs that can meet their needs, it can take several rounds of clients meeting puppies before a match is made. “It depends on what the puppy needs to learn to make a final placement,” explained Zoccola, who noted a smaller female dog with an upbeat personality would not be matched with an individual who has weight-bearing

mobility issues. “We would look for individuals who need retrieving and door opening (for that dog),” she said, adding that during meetings PAD representatives and puppy raisers examine dog and client interaction. “We are looking at the individual’s body language when they’re working with the dog,” she noted. “We are watching how the dog is interacting with that individual.” Zoccola added that puppy raisers have input into this process. “We help them to learn what we’re looking for, and together we match that dog with someone with a disability,” she said. The Mission Of Mission Church BY COURTNEY MENGEL

For a long time, it had been the vision of Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, to open a food pantry to the community. At the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic, the church shifted staff roles to keep everyone employed, and after receiving a donation of 12,000 pounds of food, the staff decided to act on the vision of opening Mission Food Pantry. On April 9,

2020, the church officially landed the pantry. At first, the staff members were unsure of how to run a food pantry, so they contacted several food pantries across the country for help. Mission Food Pantry operated out of the church’s gymnasium for several months. Knowing the food pantry had to be relocated, the staff renovated four unused classrooms in the facility. By August of 2020, Mission Food Pantry moved into its permanent home.

“In the beginning, it was eye opening to see how much need there was in the community,” said Brian Bitler, director of Mission Food Pantry and director of operations and community impact at Mission Church. “We don’t do income verification. If people say they have a need, we want to make the food available to them.” Mission Food Pantry partners with four different food banks in the area and receives donations from several local businesses. “It’s a community effort,” stated Bitler. “ We have the privilege of housing everything, but we’re all working together to help those in need in our community.” Bitler noted that he and the staff try their best to take the stigma away from accepting help from others. At Mission Food Pantry, Bitler wants everyone to know there is no judgment. “If food is available, we want to help and show the community we love them,”

Director of facility management Jeremiah Miller unloads food for Mission Food Pantry.

he said. “Help is available, so please come.” Currently, Mission Food Pantry is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. One box of nonperishable food is given to each household once a month. Individuals may pick up their box on any day the food pantry is open. Reservations are not necessary. Individuals are strongly encouraged to bring identification. Those wishing to donate items to Mission Food Pantry may visit www.missionfoodpantry.com for a list of items the pantry needs. Items that are always priorities include canned vegetables and fruit, canned chicken, beans, rice, and cereal. For more information, email foodpantry@mission -church.com or call 717 -393-9600.

Charlie Douts (left) and Deb Saylor are working together to preserve the history of Washington Boro at Blue Rock Heritage Center.

“When you walk in, you understand the timeline, which is Paleo-Indian the first 16,000 years,” she said, explaining that the earliest culture in the area is traced to nomadic people, followed by Shenk’s Ferry people. Among the artifacts on display are stone tools, spear tips, and pottery. Saylor has also created an exhibit of mysterious petroglyphs, which are shaped like animals. “ We don’t know the meanings of these,” she said. In addition, the collection includes butcher blocks, duck decoys, and information about ice harvesting, a crucial business prior to refrigeration. The organization is associated with the Circle Legacy Center, a Native American heritage group with an emphasis on the arts, crafts, and culture of indigenous people, and with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, which holds regular classes on animals such as bats, owls, and vultures. Saylor noted that part of her job is to identify and catalog area archaeological finds. “Once an item leaves the area, its cultural value is lost,” she explained. “That’s why the heritage center exists: so we can show people … what a wonderful heritage this whole place has.”

The Heritage Center, located at 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, is open for special occasions, including Sundays, Aug. 22, Sept. 19, and Oct. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. More information about upcoming activities may be found at www.bluerockheritage.org. According to Douts, the organization was founded after the location was purchased by the Lancaster Area Sewer Authority in 2002. “A group felt we had lost so much history,” said Douts, who added that the borough was the smallest in Lancaster County prior to becoming part of Manor Township in 1971. The group recognized the unique Native American history of the area and brought in Saylor from Baltimore to bring new life to the historical displays at the center. Saylor, who is curator of the Indian Steps Museum in Airville and vice president of the Lower Susquehanna Archaeology Society Chapter 28, said she saw a real potential gem in the Blue Rock Heritage Center. “Washington Boro is very rich in archaeological history,” she noted. The current exhibit at Blue Rock Heritage Center, “Footprints Through Time,” takes visitors from the Paleo-Indian Period to the present.

Campers Plan Performance

Local Author Releases Book, Sets Signing

Piercing Word will host a Scripture performance on the book of Esther presented by its summer theater camp attendees. The performance will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, in the auditorium of Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The theme will be “All In: Fully Following God.” For details, contact Aaron House at aaron@piercing word.org.

“Behind Fences: A Prison Chaplain’s Story,” a 284-page book with its roots in Lancaster County, was released in early June by author Esther Zeiset, who resides near Newmanstown. The book is about Esther’s husband, Nelson, and his 33-year career in prison chaplaincy. The Zeisets will hold a book signing event on Friday, July 23, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Tin Roof Cafe n’ Sweets, 108 N. Reading Road, Ephrata. Nelson sensed a call to prison ministry as a 12-yearold Mennonite boy. From that day in 1973, he ordered his life to fulfill the purpose of taking the Gospel message of hope and redemption to prisons. Readers of Esther’s book will learn of God’s faithfulness

through the 1980s AIDS epidemic, the Camp Hill prison riot, lawsuits and an inmate’s calculated scheme against Nelson, and of a prison church’s growth and crumbling racial walls. “Behind Fences” urges the reader to discover and pursue his or her own life calling and to view God’s faithfulness on that journey. The author interspersed her own perspectives as the Zeisets’ family life intersected with Nelson’s ministry. She has published inspirational articles, devotions, and fiction in The Secret Place, The Upper Room, Power for Living, War Cry and varied local publications. “Behind Fences” is available through Masthof Press, on Amazon and at local retailers.

Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will bring “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” back to its stage on Thursday, Aug. 5, after closing its previous run at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The return of the show will also mark the theater’s first show operating at 100% capacity after more than a year of following the state mandates that had been in place from COVID-19. “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” will play at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Aug. 5 through Saturday, Sept. 4. This is a new musical adaptation of the 1993 Warner Bros. film about two aging neighbors who have been feuding most of their lives. The two grumpy retirees, whose verbal and sometimes physical altercations date

back to their high school days, peak in rivalry when a beautiful, eccentric and charming woman moves into the neighborhood. Back to reprise their lead roles is Luther Charkurian as John Gustafson, a retired history teacher and neighbor to retired TV repairman Max Goldman, played by Rob Summers. Ariel Truax, a college professor, is played by Miranda Jane. A range of adult dinner and show ticket prices are currently available. The show is rated PG-13 due to some adult humor. Group pricing is available for groups of 16 or more. Tickets can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900, visiting www.DutchApple.com or stopping at the box office at 510 Centerville Road in Lancaster.

NOW HIRING ASSISTANT MANAGER for our NEW Quarryville store….or our Ephrata store

R073395

Construction of Lancaster’s first new fire station in over 45 years is complete at 425 W. King St. The new 18,000 square-foot station is a milestone for the Fire Bureau and the City of Lancaster. Crews at the roughly $6.5 million station are expected to run 4,000 calls for service each year. The station will house the city’s two specialized fire units - Engine Company 1 and Truck Company 2 - while responding to emergencies 24/7 with a minimum of eight firefighters on duty. The new fire station is a major investment and reflects a commitment to providing for the safety of the public by protecting life, property, and the environment. A key initiative in this station design is controling dangerous contaminants. Because of firefighters’ heightened risk of cancer due to regular exposure to known carcinogens at fire scenes, the station is broken up into three zones: the Hot Zone (dirty) that includes fire apparatus and equipment rooms, the Cold Zone (clean) that includes administrative and living spaces, and the Transition Zone between. The building was designed by architect Bruce Evans. With the West King Street station completed, construction crews have arrived at 333 E. King Street to begin the second new fire station that will complete the $12.7 million dollar infrastructure upgrade for both stations. The East King Street fire station will be under construction for approximately 12 months. To learn more, contact Scott Little, fire chief, at slittle@city oflancasterpa.com.
