Rotary Club Of Lancaster Supports CARE When COVID-19 restrictions threatened a Central American Relief Effort (CARE) project funded by the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the club board held an emergency meeting and
came through with the extra funds needed to complete the effort. The club had been asked to help fund a move of 1,000 chair and desk sets from the Penn Manor School District construction site. The furniture was
headed for schools in a povertystricken area of rural Honduras where they would replace wooden benches. Malcolm MacDougall, co-chair of World Community Service with Rotary Club of Lancaster, said that around the end of 2019 his committee approached the Rotary Club of Lancaster board with a request for $6,000 to help move the furniture into at least four 40-foot shipping containers and on to Honduras. The contribution of $6,000 was approved, and the date of the move was set for June 8 to accommodate a strict construction schedule. See Rotary Club pg 4

When Steps to Success, which provides preschool and day care services for children from 6 weeks to 13 years of age at 56 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, reopened on June 15, the more than 20 children who are cared for at the center each day walked into a place that had changed since the day care closed under COVID-19 restrictions in March. Michelle Harbaugh, founder and executive director of the learning center, and her staff had been at the center during the week prior to prepare the classrooms and to prepare for the changes they would deal with. “It took a week before that to prepare classrooms and get staff members oriented,” said Harbaugh, who noted that the staff members had not worked for three months. Families whose children are cared for
at Steps to Success became aware of the differences when they approached the building. “Our health checks are outside in the (building’s) foyer,” said Harbaugh. “We ask the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) questions and check temperatures,” she noted, adding that she is gowned, masked, and gloved to handle those tasks. Next, the children use hand sanitizer before being walked to their classroom, where they wash their hands with soap and water as soon as they enter the room. Masks are a new requirement, but they do not have to be worn outside, while napping, or when eating. “Parents are responsible for bringing and washing masks, and children are wearing them as much as possible,” said Harbaugh, who noted that the youngest children and children with special needs such as autism have the hardest time wearing the masks. “The needs of the child have to be weighed against the safety See Steps To Success pg 2

Coconut oil is a great source of fat. Consuming fat helps you stay satisfied longer and also gives you a boost of energy. Almost 50% of the fatty acid in coconut oil is lauric acid, which also enhances the immune system. So for those reasons alone, you should try adding coconut oil to your coffee! - 1 cup brewed coffee - 1 tsp. Golden Barrel Coconut Oil - 1/4 tsp. cocoa powder (optional)

needs, she noted. Once the students reach the large classrooms, they are divided into primary care groups, which do not interact with other groups. “We have multiple primary care groups within our four classrooms, explained Harbaugh, who noted that the groups alternate playground times and other activities inside and outside the building. “When one group is in the room, another is outside, she said, adding that the only time all the children are in one room is during nap time, when they must be six feet apart. The new playground that was completed for the center two years ago has aided in executing the primary care concept. “I can have two groups out there at a time, which makes transitioning a lot nicer, she said, adding that playground equipment is disinfected between play groups. Another change is limiting the items that come from home to the center. “(We allow) a change of clothes, a blanket, and the babies have their bottles, said Harbaugh, who noted that items from home are stored in individual front-open plastic totes. Toys children play with must be disinfected between play groups or quarantined for 72 hours. Harbaugh said that bleach and alcohol are the main agents used for disinfecting, which she explained offer a higher potency
than agents used for sanitizing. “Our guidelines say disinfecting, which is done by the staff, she said, noting that after each item is disinfected, staff members rinse it with water. The up to 30 children who attend the center receive two meals and a snack each day. The cook delivers the meals on disposable dishes to each room. Harbaugh said that the center had a number of field trips planned this summer and that staff members are evaluating each trip based on whether the venue offers a safe experience for the children. Because it is summer, the current curriculum is focused on play and social and emotional development. Staff members are reconnecting with students, answering questions about the disease and the pandemic, and looking for safe ways to have fun. Steps to Success is a nonprofit entity, and Harbaugh noted that some of the organization’s fundraisers were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. “I have been very blessed with some very generous donations during the pandemic, said Harbaugh, who added that the center was also able to secure a small business loan. winners, and there will be a putting contest. “One unique contest at French Creek is the ‘pool in the pond’ contest, said Jody Fausnight, director of advancement for HMS. “Golfers purchase three opportunities to drive a golf ball toward a floating pool in the center of the pond from the overlooking patio area. Those landing it in the pool share the prize total. At the 2019 tournament, Russ Akinin, who is an HMS parent and a Lancaster County real estate agent, hit his first hole-inone on Hole 5, a 106-yard par 3 hole with an elevated green. The elevated green prevented him from seeing the hole from the tee box, so he was not aware that his first shot had gone in, but when he arrived at the green, he and his party realized that the ball was in the hole. The presenting sponsor for the tournament is Brubacher Inc., and the dinner sponsor is Zook Interiors. According to Melissa Beidler, director of enrollment and marketing with HMS, the goal for this year’s tournament is $10,000. Funds raised by the event will assist with the school operating budget and help make tuition costs affordable for families desiring admission. HMS, which is located at 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, is now entering its 40th year. The school currently serves more than 240 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade with a Christ-centered, child-focused education. HMS Plans Networking Breakfast Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS), 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, will hold its annual Business Networking Breakfast on Tuesday, July 28, from 6:45 to 9 a.m. in the school gymnasium. Preparations were in place in March to welcome more than 120 Lancaster County business leaders to HMS’ annual networking breakfast, but these plans were changed after the closures of schools and businesses due to COVID-19. The networking breakfast is a way for HMS to thank its community business partners. Now, as businesses and the community begin to reopen, HMS will offer an opportunity for local business leaders to connect and feel supported in challenging times. The breakfast will include a presentation by Forbes Coaches Council speaker Ken Gosnell as well as networking opportunities with other Lancaster County businesses and leaders. The task force was looking for a way to battle childhood obesity in Pennsylvania, and letterboxing was chosen as a way to get children moving. Last year, over 500 children returned etching sheets for the Lancaster County program, during which they walked more than 3,300 miles. The program is funded through WellSpan’s Community Partnership Grant Program. In mid-March, all construction ceased due to COVID-19 restrictions. Although construction was able to resume in a few weeks, another problem arose. “The plan was (to) seek out volunteers to help remove furniture from the classrooms and load the shipping containers,” recalled MacDougall. “ While everything was in (the) red (phase) … people were
understandably reluctant to volunteer, even though Penn Manor assured they would take safety measures.” MacDougall went on to say that Rotary Club members were also not comfortable asking for volunteers to work in close quarters under the circumstances. Club member and World Community Service co-chair Rick Manix suggested the organization
consider hiring professional movers. Jack Treier Moving and Storage, now known as Armstrong Relocation, was contacted. “(The moving company agreed) to absorb some of the expense, but the balance would cost CARE an additional $3,200,” said MacDougall. “We urgently approached our board to help CARE continue with the project.” The Rotary Club of Lancaster board wasted no time. An evening meeting was scheduled for June 4
to consider the matter of extra funding. “They approved the request for a supplemental $3,200 … bringing the Rotary Club of Lancaster share to $9,200,” said MacDougall. “Because of that, CARE was able to contract with (the moving company) to do the project.” Because of the added funds, the furniture was able to be transferred to the shipping containers and on to Honduras in conjunction with the construction schedule. MacDougall pointed out that

The school will continue to offer a Catholic education for all those who seek a faith-based environment for their children. The school looks forward to welcoming new families from the Manheim Township community and other communities in the area. Both Catholic and non-Catholic families looking for a new and different option for their children are invited to

Free Online STEM Camp Slated locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary” on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching. Then families will work together on an animal habitat design project using the materials in the resource bags. The curriculum also includes introductions to STEM careers for young learners, a suggested book list and links to extension STEM games and activities online. The partners hope that participation in the “Summer STEM Adventure!” brings many positive outcomes for children and their families. Educational goals for the program include learning about design principles, engaging in family conversations that help develop social and emotional skills, practicing making inferences, reflecting on content, discussing details and exploring careers.
WITF President and CEO Ron Hetrick helps to assemble the 3,000 resource bags for the “Summer STEM Adventure!” program. IUs will distribute the resource bags and antennas to the following partner school districts and locations: Bermudian Springs, Tuscarora, Lincoln Charter School, West York, Upper Adams, Gettysburg, York Academy Regional Charter School, Chambersburg, School District of the City of York, LIU Early Childhood Classrooms, School District of Lancaster, Penn Manor School
District, Steelton-Highspire Elementary (Salvation Army of Harrisburg), Susquehanna Township School District, Harrisburg School District and Camp Curtin YMCA. Any families that do not receive a resource bag but are interested in participating in “Summer STEM Adventure!” can access the activity sheets, book list and extension activities at www.witf.org/stem.

WITF announced that central Pennsylvania families seeking a fun, educational experience at home can join the free “Summer STEM Adventure!” Based on the “Engineering By Design” curriculum, the summer camp style experience will guide families through a combination of PBS KIDS television programs, discussion questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15, partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to partner

Kavrina Kelly (left), on-site coordinator for Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, recently received a truckload of food from Rhett Hintze, president of the Harrisburg Stake (diocese) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The food donation arrived at the food bank from a church storehouse. The Lancaster Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints recently offered humanitarian aid during the COVID-19 pandemic in three different ways. The effort utilized the centralized structure of the church, which has headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, and local wards or congregations that are aware of needs in their own communities. The first effort was born of a request to Stan Walters, the Pennsylvania Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) director and a member of the Shrewsbury Ward, from Shen Kreiser at York County’s Office of Emergency Management requesting more hygiene kits for quarantine housing for persons experiencing homelessness. A pallet of 500 kits was sent from Salt Lake City on May 7. The rest will be used statewide by Pennsylvania VOAD. Then on May 14 food donations
of $500 each were delivered from the Bishops’ Storehouse in Baltimore, Md., to the York Food Bank, Lancaster County Food Hub, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries from church funds managed by the Stake Communication Council. A shipment of 40,000 pounds of food from Salt Lake City arrived at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg on May 20. Local leaders chose this particular food bank because it in turn supplies more than 1,000 food assistance programs in 27 counties. According to the church, 15 truckloads of commodities from its network of bishop’s storehouses are being delivered to food banks and other charitable organizations weekly across the country. Harrisburg Stake president Rhett Hintze serves as the senior leader of the church in the Harrisburg area.
Reed Named To Dean’s List Nicholas T. Reed was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. A member of the Class of 2021, Reed is a political science major with
plans to attend law school after graduation. Reed is a 2017 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School. He is the son of Harry and Melissa Reed of Lancaster.
Nearly 4,000 policyholder members joined with Lancaster County-based Goodville Mutual to donate more than $210,000 in support of food banks, first responders, health professionals and international organizations responding to COVID-19 through the company’s Safe@home program. The Safe@home program was created by Goodville after leaders in the company recognized that people were driving less as a result of the stay-at-home order. The Lancaster Countybased mutual insurance company issued its auto insurance policyholders a 15% Safe@home credit on April and May auto premiums for a total of $1.75 million in policyholder relief. In addition, members were given the option to donate their credit to frontline COVID-19 responders in the eight states Goodville members live in or internationally. A total of 3,957 credits were donated by members resulting in $110,362 in credits donated, all of which will be distributed to
food banks, first responders and health professionals, as well as international charities providing COVID-19 relief. Goodville will fulfill its commitment to match those donations up to $100,000 to double the impact of its members’ donations. Members who chose to donate their credit could direct their donation to the category of their choice. Forty-eight percent chose regional food banks, 26% chose a “where needed most category, 21% selected first responders and 5% directed their credit toward international relief. Goodville distributed the funds in June to regional food banks, first responders and health care professionals in the states in which contributing members reside. Goodville will work with the Mennonite Central Committee to direct funds to international communities in need. A detailed list of the charities selected is forthcoming. For more information about the program, readers may visit www.goodville.com/covid19.
