Golf Tournament To Benefit Iron-Leg Corp New Organization Aids Children In Need Of Prosthetics BY ANN MEAD ASH
ight-year-old Parker Millhouse hops ahead of his father, Matt, to a pavilion located in a Lancaster park. Without hesitation, he leaps on a picnic table and from there straddles one of the pavilion poles. Using his powerful arms, his full left leg, and his right stump, Parker climbs up the pole. His prosthetic leg lies on the bench of a nearby picnic table. Parker had asked his dad, Matt, to help him remove the device because it was making his stump itch. Parker’s fifth and current prosthesis sports camo on the material that fits around his stump. Matt said Parker enjoys climbing rock walls as well as playing on the neighbor’s trampoline. “He uses his arms all the time,” said Matt. “He’s very muscular.” “I climbed a giant rope,” Parker said of a recent activity. Parker is the poster child for IronLeg Corp, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has a goal of helping raise funds to help children obtain needed

According to Stephanie Morales, who is making her theatrical directorial debut with Cavod’s “Into the Woods Jr.,” the woods are a metaphor for life. “We have an idea of what life should look like, but let’s look at 2020,” said Morales, pointing out the timeliness of the message. “Life was supposed to look one way, but how do you roll with those punches?”

Quarryville Man Takes Up Heritage Quest
“My story is closely intertwined with my mother’s,” said Jacob Farneth of Quarryville. Jacob took over the mission of his mother, Margo, to research their family history following her death in 2019. “I have been honored and blessed to take up that mantle and try to step into those shoes,” said Jacob.
To raise those funds, Iron-Leg is planning a benefit golf tournament for Saturday, Sept. 11. Matt acknowledged that the event is being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and noted that three of the organizers are veterans. He said that a large flag will be part of the event. The tournament will be held at The Highlands of Donegal, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy, and will include a silent auction and dinner. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., and there will be a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Organizers have invited Shawn to be present at the tournament. More information about the tournament may be found at www.ironleg.org or by emailing info@ironleg.org.

prosthetics and receive therapy to learn to use them. “We want to get the more advanced prosthetics (for children),” explained Matt, who told the story of a youngster named Shawn, who lives in York and is currently being helped by the organization. Matt learned about Shawn when he read an article about him online and was able to contact Shawn’s mother. “(In the) article … his mom was saying insurance wouldn’t cover a better hand,” said Matt, who noted that Shawn was using a strap to hold a bow so he could practice playing the violin. “When I called her, she said he got (a moderately more advanced) hand when she raised money through (crowdsourcing).” Matt explained that insurance will generally cover only the most basic prosthetics for children because they grow so fast. He added that limbs can cost as much as $85,000. The mechanical hand that Iron-Leg hopes to purchase for Shawn will have advanced technology, allowing him to control the hand from his stump. Matt said Iron-Leg will need to raise $10,000 to help make that purchase.

In the last five years, the ministry originally known as House of His Creation (HOHC) and briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), has been through a number of changes. After becoming FORM in 2016, the ministry moved from Lititz Pike to the Brickerville area, but as of late 2019, the name had reverted to HOHC, and in February 2021, the ministry moved to the site of a former bed-and-breakfast at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. Through all the changes, the mission of the ministry has been to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. In its new location, HOHC will continue to provide those services through maternity housing for women age 18 and up especially women leaving abusive situations - who are in the first two trimesters of pregnancy and have been sober for several months. The women must also be willing to consider adoption and parenting plans and to take advantage of growth

opportunities, and be educated toward reaching goals. Client housing for four women is provided on the second floor of the house, where each room has a private bathroom. The family living model includes individualized case management and education about basic life skills, finances, and parenting options, along with recreational activities. Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, noted that a change from former programming models is the aftercare services that are available for one year after the mother is discharged from the program. “That means that I would come and do a home visit and assess how they’re doing,” said Gibbs. “We follow through with things they may have started and provide support so they don’t feel out there and alone.” Mothers who choose to actively parent often need to learn how to do that while working, but according to executive director Matthew Neff, women who make an adoption plan may be especially in need of aftercare. “When a woman makes an adoption plan, it is very emotionally hard,” said HOHC house mom and Matthew’s wife, Callie. “She may need help to navigate the roles and the relationships around that.” Callie noted that when the pregnancy was not the woman’s first, other issues may be involved. “(When a woman has) multiple
children (who are) part of their story, then it becomes reunification or rebuilding relationship with children they haven’t actively been parenting,” said Callie. “Those children wouldn’t necessarily live here, but we would help (the woman) negotiate toward a goal that may include parenting rights in some cases.” Aftercare program goals include education in mindful parenting, empowerment to access community resources, and engaging parents to connect with other parents. HOHC offers parenting classes called “Parenting Journey” and “Parenting Journey for Fathers.” The 12-week experiential programs
include guided discussion to develop knowledge and skills. More information about HOHC may be found at www.hohc.org. Those with specific questions may email mail@hohc.org or call 717-626-0263. Readers who have questions about parenting classes may email Michelle@hohc.org or call 347206-3617.

Jacob inherited all the research his mother had done on their family tree. Before she passed, the two discussed what she had completed, tracing some family members back to the early 1600s, and where he would pick up to move forward. While Jacob and his mother shared an interest in genealogy, he noted that their paths diverge in some areas. “There are different strategies to researching your tree,” he said, noting that his mother wanted to see how far back she could trace her family, while he is more interested in the width of the tree and locating living family members. “We both cared very much about the tree, but we had different priorities,” he explained. He has spent time retracing his mother’s steps in order to connect with her thought process. He specified that the decision on when to add an ancestor to a tree involves a personal philosophy. “The further

It’s easier to go to a living relative and ask them questions. When they’re gone, you lose that.” Jacob said he has used www.ancestry.com intermittently, but he practices social etiquette when approaching possible relatives via social media. “You have to ask permission to dig into family trees,” he said. “You have to ask permission to add data (about someone else to your tree).” He noted that he has sent messages to possible family members asking politely to include them. “You have to be respectful. … You don’t want to bother them, but you want information,” he stated, adding that although Farneth is not a common name, he sometimes comes across potential family members and tries to find a shared ancestor. Jacob encourages others who are interested in finding their own beginnings to follow their curiosity and continue to work to put the
According to Douts, the organization was founded after the location was purchased by the Lancaster Area Sewer Authority in 2002. “A group felt we had lost so much history,” said Douts, who added that the borough was the smallest in Lancaster County prior to becoming part of Manor Township in 1971. The group recognized the unique Native American history of the area and brought in Saylor from Baltimore to bring new life to the historical displays at the center. president of the Lower Susquehanna Archaeology Society Chapter 28, said she saw a real potential gem in the Blue Rock Heritage Center. “Washington Boro is very rich in archaeological history,” she noted. The current exhibit at Blue Rock Heritage Center, “Footprints Through Time,” takes visitors from the Paleo-Indian Period to the present. “When you walk in, you understand the timeline, which is PaleoIndian the first 16,000 years,” she said, explaining that the earliest culture in the area is traced to nomadic people, followed by Shenk’s Ferry people. Among the artifacts on display are stone tools, spear tips, and pottery. Saylor has also created an exhibit of mysterious petroglyphs, which are

Often, he noted, the name will be misspelled. “Sometimes names were never written down because people couldn’t write or read,” he said. Jacob is thankful to have found other family members who are also tracing their roots. “It seems there are one in 20 family members who are really interested, and if enough family members are interested in piecing the little trees together, eventually you can connect them,” he said. While noting that internet technology is helpful in bringing together branches to form a larger picture, Jacob does not discount first-hand research. “If you meet a great-aunt at a reunion, ask questions and advance the tree a little further,” he suggested. “Every day you wait, it gets harder to do this research.

In addition, the collection includes butcher blocks, duck decoys, and information about ice harvesting, a crucial business prior to refrigeration. The organization is associated with the Circle Legacy Center, a Native American heritage group with an emphasis on the arts, crafts, and culture of indigenous people, and with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, which holds regular classes on animals such as bats, owls, and vultures. Saylor noted that part of her job is to identify and catalog area archaeological finds. “Once an item leaves the area, its cultural value is lost,” she explained. “That’s why the heritage center exists: so we can show people … what a wonderful heritage this whole place has.”

Although educational goals, skill building and job attainment are always on the forefront for adult learners entering our program, skilling up after the pandemic takes on a whole new meaning and will be an important step for many workers who lost their jobs during COVID-19 restrictions. For some, it will mean improving basic literacy in reading, math, or English. For others, it will mean career exploration and sharpening skills to move into postsecondary education or training. The Success Centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties are places where adults can get the support they need to build skills so that they can transform their lives, sustain their families and strengthen their communities.*

Concert To Feature Celtic Music, Dancing
Lessons from pg 1 mysterious man, Sheridan MacKenzie as the wolf, Aaliyah Clark as Granny, and Annicka Locke as the steward. Amy Rau will be the musical director. Morales noted that one challenge of staging the show is that the script only calls for about 15 cast members, but the camp attracted 27 attendees. “We are trying to find new and creative ways to implement everyone and make sure each one has a moment on stage,” she said. However, even before camp had begun, Morales stated, she was having fun deciding which direction to take the quirky script and gathering the cast for a read-through. “The kids all were excited,” she said, noting that when she walked into the gathering, she heard children squealing and laughing. “Seeing people hug each other … we are starting off with a positive, loving environment,” she said. Many of the show’s lessons are meant for audience members of all ages. “At some point in life, we are all ‘in the woods,’” said Morales. “You follow the journeys of all these characters who (are seeking) a specific idea of happiness, (but) as they travel into the woods they discover that ideal happy moment is not what they needed, but only what they wanted.” Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.cavod.org.
