Internship Makes Difference For Dementia Patients By Ann Mead Ash

When Lisa Martin, RN and unit manager for Mountain View at Fairmount, a floor that serves about 80% dementia patients, applied for a grant from Leading Age for an intern, she did not realize how crucial the effects of COVID-19 restrictions would make the position. Leading Age is a trade association for nonprofit organizations that serve the elderly. The organization advocates for quality care and services for seniors. When Martin applied for the grant, she had an employee in mind for the internship. Lainey Mast, a junior at

Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, had worked for Fairmount as a resident care assistant since 2017. Martin knew Mast, now a psychology and social work major with plans to work with the elderly, would be a good fit for the position. What she did not know at the time was that the work she planned for Mast to do would be so necessary for patients who were uncomfortable after being isolated under COVID-19 restrictions. While earning her degree from Millersville University, Martin studied evidence-based research, and she wanted to revisit that area for her patients. “I wanted the most up-to-date research and how could we apply that to taking

The internship was made possible by a Leading Age grant.

Cavod Camp To Stage “Frozen Jr.”

In 2016, House of His Creation (HOHC) became Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM). Shortly thereafter, the ministry moved from its location on Lititz Pike to 541 W. 28th Division Highway, Lititz. At the time, House of His Creation still existed as a maternity home on the new property, serving women age 18 and older. Loving and Caring Resources, which also came under the FORM umbrella, held on-site classes including The Parenting Journey and the Beautiful You events. In December 2019, the ministry decided to make another change. “ We will be back to See HOHC pg 6

care of our residents,” said Martin. Beginning at the end of May, Mast researched interventions for residents with dementia-related behaviors and those struggling with the isolation they experienced under COVID-19 restrictions. “Based on the research, I created individualized interventions for residents and implemented them daily,” said Mast, who observed behavior patterns in specific patients and identified triggers and removed them when possible. In other cases, residents were understimulated. “I looked into their interests and came up with creative activities for them,” said Mast, who incorporated exercises that have been found effective such as using music to aid recall or reminiscence therapy, where she showed a video related to a patient’s past interest

Cavod Academy’s summer musical theater camp for youths ages 10 to 18 has yet to begin, but Alexander Weaver, who will make his first directorial solo effort for the organization, is looking forward to overseeing the camp and producing “Frozen Jr.” at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Camp will be held at the venue from Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 14. “The fun is being able to teach students and interacting with the cast and the production crew,” said Weaver. “I love summer camps, (especially) the feel of being able to put on a show, play games, and just connect.”

Matthew Neff (left), executive director of House of His Creation (HOHC), and Callie Neff, housing support specialist, stand beside the sign at the ministry’s location in northern Lititz. After using the name Family of Restoration Ministries for several years, HOHC is returning to its roots by providing housing for women in certain circumstances.

Four performances of the musical, based on the 2018 Broadway version of the Disney animated film, will be held for the public at The Junction Center on Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug 16, at 2 and 7 p.m.

each day. “Frozen Jr.” brings royal sisters Elsa and Anna, along with the land of Arendelle, where they live, to life on the stage. The junior version includes songs from animated film such as “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” See Cavod Camp pg 4

Cavod Academy’s summer musical theater camp for 2019 presented “Mary Poppins.” This year’s camp, which will be held at The Junction Center in Manheim, will present “Frozen Jr.” with shows at 2 and 7 p.m. on Aug. 15 and 16.

develop. The COVID-19 antibody test used at Patient First tests to see if the blood has antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies may be found in the blood when the body is responding or has responded to an infection, such as COVID-19. Antibodies may give full or partial immunity to the virus to which they develop. However, it is not known at this time how long the body will have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 or whether they actually give immunity to future infections from this virus. Blood samples will be sent to a third-party reference lab for antibody testing. Results will generally be available in about two to five days. Patients may opt to receive their result via text message.

Internship from pg 1 to stimulate conversation. Mast spent time educating Fairmount staff during daily huddles, where she discussed general approaches to working with residents with dementia. She also briefed them on the best ways to work with specific residents. She worked with staff to develop theme weeks that helped add enjoyment to residents’ days as the quarantine progressed. The internship was due to end in mid-July. Reflecting on what she learned, Mast noted that she has discovered how important it is to get to know the individual resident prior to trying to understand the patient’s behaviors. “Going forward this has given me a better understanding of what interactions with people with dementia look like on a daily basis,” she said. “In my previous job, I interacted with the residents, but it was much more task focused and this is much more person focused.” She also noted that the experience had showed

her which approaches and communication are effective and which are not. Martin noted that initially she was concerned about how COVID-19 restrictions would affect the internship, but she soon learned that Mast’s work could have a positive effect on the isolated residents. “Lainey has been great,” said Martin, who noted that Mast had met with caregivers, identified patients who were struggling, and tailored plans to meet their needs. “(Mast) looks at interests and care plans and interviews team members to help improve the quality of life overall with those residents,” shared Martin, who added that when the internship ends staff members will be able to utilize the intervention plans Mast developed. “Knowing a baseline of what (a resident’s) interests are and what they respond to will be good,” she said. “It’s improving quality of life as a whole by giving them meaningful activities that could in turn prevent (issues).” Fairmount is a nonprofit Life Plan community located at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. Cavod Camp from pg 1 and “Let It Go,” along with five new songs, which were written specifically for the Broadway production. The story of sisterhood follows Elsa and Anna from their girlhood in the palace to an encounter with danger where each discovers her inner potential. Cast members will represent Elsa and Anna at different ages, and other well-known characters from the film will include Hans, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, King Agnarr, Oaken, and Queen Iduna. Weaver noted that one challenge of staging the show is related to the familiarity of the movie. “It’s a very popular movie, so there are expectations for some scenes and singing,” said Weaver, who added that the scale of the show is daunting as well. “(We have) to make it feel massive in the space that we have,” he said. “Trying to make the show feel as big as the movie is one of the challenges.” Auditions for the camp were held in mid-July. Weaver said that a cast of 30 to 40 members is preferable, but a larger cast can be accommodated.

When it comes to publishing a book, there are primarily two ways to go: traditional or independent. Former Quarryville resident Lindsay Bandy opted to follow the traditional route for her historical novel, “Nemesis and the Swan,” which will be released in October. Lindsay first realized that she wanted to become a published author while an English major at Millersville University in the mid-2000s. As a teenager, Lindsay had used poetry as a way to process her emotions, but when she began publication, she discovered that it is difficult to get poetry published. Instead, she started writing her first historical novel. “I had no idea what I was doing, but it was really fun for me,” Lindsay recalled. After graduating, Lindsay married Clay Bandy and subsequently had two daughters. Lindsay became intimately acquainted with children’s literature by reading to her girls. As the children grew, Lindsay wrote poetry with them, and she began thinking again about publishing. With a new interest in children’s literature, Lindsay found the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and joined a critique group. She sold several poems to Highlights for Children magazine and volunteered to act as blogmaster for the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of SCBWI. She was later appointed co-regional adviser. Lindsay and her team plan two big conferences for writers every year: one in the spring at the Highlights Foundation retreat center and another in the fall in Philadelphia. Lindsay recommends that aspiring authors attend conferences like those, especially when representatives of major publishing houses participate. “It’s a really nice way to get professional feedback on your work and make personal connections that might get you somewhere,” Lindsay said. The educational opportunities afforded by conferences are also valuable, she asserted. “You meet other people in all different stages of the process. The peer connections are definitely awesome,” Lindsay reflected. “Before I joined SCBWI, I had no idea of what I was doing in publishing. They gave me all the resources to get from where I was to where I wanted to be.” For Lindsay, “getting there” meant pursuing the traditional publishing route. She wanted the support of a publisher, which independently published authors do not have. Lindsay’s publisher is helping to publicize her book, so the marketing does not rest solely on her shoulders. For authors who are seeking traditional publishing, Lindsay offered advice gleaned from personal experience and years of SCBWI membership: - Don’t send your manuscript

Lindsay Bandy to everybody. “Agents are looking for specific things,” Lindsay said. “Research the agents and editors who are interested in what you have.” - Get a lot of feedback and polish your book before you submit it. “You get a lot of rejections, and you have to be stubborn. You have to be hard on yourself,” Lindsay remarked. “People who do it have revised and revised. It’s a long process.” - Don’t be fooled: Picture books have fewer words and See Author pg 5

Weaver said the show was chosen by Connie Dienner, executive director and founder of Cavod, and Monica DePaul, artistic director of theater. “It became available, and it’s very popular with children,” said Weaver of the selection. Show staff will include Ric Weaver as assistant director, Bente Weaver as camp manager, and Cassidy Martin as stage manager. Amy Rau will serve as music director, assisted by Hannah Rau, and Stephanie Morales will be the choreographer. Lights and special effects will be the responsibility of Shannon Seip and Lee Shaeffer will oversee sound. Emily Johnson will provide makeup and hair design, and Tyson Severin will be in charge of props. Area families are invited to make the trip to Manheim to see the show and see where WJTL broadcasts. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.

pages than novels, but that doesn’t make them a breeze to complete. “The words themselves can be easier, but finding a niche and getting those words to work as a 32-page illustrated book can be harder,” Lindsay said, pointing out that the printing process constrains book size. Authors need to have a unique idea and then consider page turns, what words will be on what pages, the intended reading level, and how illustrations will fit. - Be flexible. “Publishers don’t want you to illustrate your own work unless you’re a professional illustrator. You don’t choose,” Lindsay said. “The same works with novels. I try to at least try (the suggested edits) first. Sometimes people can push you to make something better.” Lindsay recently accepted the role of youth services coordinator at Manheim Community Library, and Clay is working in sales for an agricultural publication, so the Bandys have moved to Brownstown to shorten their respective commutes. Lindsay is excited about her new role. “I love working with kids, sharing books with them, and finding books they love,” she said. Currently, the library’s Summer Reading Program is entirely online, but Lindsay is anticipating in-person activities. She would like to offer writing workshops for children and teenagers so they can be creative in a supportive environment. “I would like to see programs that pair up kids with other members of the community - older adults, teenagers with tutoring - to get some intergenerational stuff going on,” she added. Interested individuals may contact Lindsay by visiting www.LindsayBandyBooks.com.

solely operating as HOHC, read a letter from Matthew Neff, executive director. Loving and Caring Resources services will continue to be present and active at the site. Callie Neff, housing support specialist with HOHC, explained the transition. “We had become more of a teaching, training, and equipping kind of ministry (as FORM), she noted. “We wanted to focus back on our primary mission, which is housing. Over the nearly 50 years since HOHC was founded, the ministry mainly offered maternity housing with a mother and child component. The Neffs served at the house on Lititz Pike in that capacity. “We were living with young teen moms, recalled Callie, “(but) who was calling (for help) changed. Women who are in need of help now are usually between the ages of 18 to 24 and come from a variety of backgrounds, but they have a common need - a shortterm safe place to regroup. there are an abundance of services in the Lancaster area, there is also great need. “For a woman to be told we should have an opening in two weeks - that’s too long, said Matthew. “ We can fill in those two weeks, added Callie, who noted that HOHC will function with two different on-site models. First, the stone house will remain available for pregnant women. Bedrooms are available in the house where women can be served in a family model. “They live with our family and we offer case management, transportation, and the whole gamut of social services and support, said Callie. The second model will be apartments located on the property that can fill the gap for women who need a safe place to stay for a few weeks. “The apartments are being shifted so that some of the rooms are designated for ministry purposes for women escaping (exploitation, human trafficking, or abuse),

With the arrival of COVID-19, Landis Valley Museum, Lancaster, had to cancel programs and put special projects on hold. The museum has been closed to the public since mid-March, and all but essential personnel are working from home. All events have been canceled through August, but new online programming ideas are being discussed. The “Thrown, Fired and Glazed: The Redware Tradition From Pennsylvania and Beyond exhibit was originally scheduled to run until December, but it has been extended to June 2021. Landis Valley is also trying to find ways to help engaged couples make their wedding dreams come true in spite of COVID-19. For updates, readers may visit www.landisvalleymuseum.org or follow the museum on Facebook and Instagram. For more information or to submit a program suggestion, readers may contact c-creedy@state.pa.us.

Callie summed up the changes in the ministry, saying, “It has expanded beyond the limitation of calling just because of a pregnancy. A lot of the same factors are at work in the lives of these women, and the path to finding a way out is generally the same. She added that a safe place and healthy supports are available to clients of HOHC. “We have the added bonus of the years of experience walking through pregnancies. That’s been our foundation, she said. Current needs of the ministry include new doors for the apartments. “I would love to have a new door campaign, said Matthew. “Doors cost up to $300 each, and we need 14 for six apartment units. He noted that individuals could sponsor a single door or builders could donate excess inventory. Readers who would like more information about the ministry may visit www.hohc.org.

said Callie. “They need that first stop to work through the crisis and figure out what’s next. Matthew noted that as apartments become available, more will be open to the increased need for women in the Manheim, Ephrata, Warwick, and Manheim Township areas who have been seeking help in the last year. Once the crisis has passed, the ministry can help a woman begin to work toward goals. “It may be finding a program or housing, said Callie. Matthew added that a woman need not have children to turn to the ministry for help, but he noted that children are often a motivating factor in leaving an unsafe situation. “(We can offer a place) for her and the children to sleep safely, and they have the chance to plan the future while being out of the (unsafe) circumstances, Matthew said.

Schreiber’s 32nd annual Rubber Duckie Race will be virtual for the first time in its history. Souvenir duckies with a “Choose Your Own Adventure” theme will accompany ticket sales, which will end on Sept. 12. Ticket proceeds will be matched by a grant from the Stabler Foundation.

According to Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, this is just the second time that Schreiber has received a $250,000 matching grant in its 84-year history, and both times it has come from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. “This one comes at a critical moment for us as we work to navigate a COVID-19 world,” Fink remarked. “Like many nonprofits, we’re facing a challenging period in the next 12 months.” The grant will provide a dollarfor-dollar match for all the money raised by Schreiber starting June 11, when the Stabler Foundation forwarded its approval. Stabler has committed up to $250,000, and Schreiber has one year to raise the matching funds. The initial $250,000 grant combined with what Schreiber hopes to raise from the community would mean $500,000 for the local organization, matching the amount generated from a similar grant by the Stabler Foundation in 2016. That grant was the largest contribution toward adding an infant room to Schreiber’s Circle of Friends Academy child care center. “This grant couldn’t have come at a better time for Schreiber,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “Obviously, with everything happening around COVID19, raising revenue is even more of a concern than usual. The community rallied around us, as it always does, these past three months, but we don’t know what challenges are ahead of us. This grant and the matching dollars it generates will give us a significant boost at a critical time in our fundraising.” Schreiber has gradually phased in services in various departments. It has been open and providing limited therapy and behavioral health services, primarily through telehealth sessions, since early April. Circle of Friends Academy reopened on June 8. Camp Schreiber began operating virtually on June 22.

In addition, some Schreiber fundraising events that were limited, delayed, or postponed are finding new dates. The softball weekend will be held from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 21 to 23, and the Golf Classic will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 21. “We will keep making adjustments as we go,” DeBord said, “and we will keep telling our story. This place has been around for 84 years. I have faith that the staff, our leadership, and this community will do what’s necessary to make sure we’re still here on the other side of COVID.” Additionally, Schreiber has moved its iconic Rubber Duckie Race online. This year’s race would have been the 32nd event, but the tens of thousands of racing ducks will not take their trip down the Conestoga River at Lancaster County Central Park. Instead, a special online duckie event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, to determine prize winners. Tickets went on sale July 1 and will be available at www.schreiberpediatric.org/ events/duckies or in person at Duckie Central, also known as Schreiber’s financial development office, 610 Community Way, Lancaster. Ticket sales will end on Saturday, Sept. 12. Proceeds from ticket sales will be matched by the Stabler grant. COVID-19 prompted the shift to a virtual duckie race, and there will be other ways this year’s event will look different. Schreiber supporters are encouraged to purchase tickets online to limit personal contact during duckie transactions. Fun, new content, particularly contests and biographies of some of this year’s souvenir duckies, will be posted on the aforementioned website. Additionally, Schreiber has a new Duckie Mobile that will travel around Lancaster County selling duckies and bringing other excitement to neighborhoods. This year’s theme is “Choose Your Own Adventure” and features some of the most popular souvenir duckies from recent

What started out as a year of celebration to observe the 20th anniversary of Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, has evolved into an effort to continue providing services during the coronavirus pandemic. Brittany’s Hope, which is based in Elizabethtown, has had to change its focus from celebrating to fundraising. “We were planning all these wonderful things to celebrate and commemorate our work over the past 20 years,” stated Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director. “We’re now basically redefining our efforts and getting creative on how to carry on the work we started. In place of celebration, we are revamping, reworking and restructuring to continue to breathe life into the important work we do at Brittany’s Hope.” Fortunately, the organization was able to hold the first Brittany’s Ball: A Boots & Bow Tie Gala on March 7 at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown. The fundraising gala took place just before the shutdown orders went into place. However, its 20th annual golf tournament at Conestoga Country Club in August has been canceled. Plans call for the Brittany’s Hope 5K to take place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Stone Gables, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, but it will be held with a new socially distant format. More information about the event is available at www.walkoflove.org. Brittany’s Hope was founded in 1999 as part of an effort to facilitate adoptions of special needs children from around the world. Brittany’s Hope is not an adoption agency. Rather, it provides adoption grants to assist families with the costs associated with international adoptions. “The family that started this organization adopted 12 children, including myself, so I am an adoptee,” explained Sahd. “Brittany’s Hope was established as a result of the death of their first adopted daughter, Brittany. Out of that tragedy came the birth of Brittany’s Hope.” In addition to issuing grants, the organization provides humanitarian relief efforts, including food and health care, to benefit the children who remain in orphanages worldwide. “In developing countries many children are stuck in institutional care and there are those left behind because of their special needs,” said Sahd. “We provide direct care to orphaned children who are not eligible for adoption or who are waiting to be adopted.” During the March gala, attendees learned about the success of the organization over the past 20 years and met some of the adopted children. “In 20 years, we have impacted 29,000 families through our humanitarian

GOTR Unveils Activity Kit Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon recently unveiled the Power Up Activity Kit to help keep hundreds of girls active and healthy through the summer while inspiring creativity, encouraging movement, and teaching new skills. Girls on the Run develops and delivers programs for girls at sites in every school district across Lancaster and Lebanon counties, and the organization has served more than 16,000 girls since it was founded in 2009. After the cancellation of schools, implementation of social distancing, and the restrictions around large public events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 11-yearold nonprofit quickly altered its spring season to continue to deliver on its mission. The at-home kit includes 50 activities to fuel a girl’s mind, body and spirit and that emphasize the connection between physical and emotional health. Each activity helps girls learn important skills such as how to cope when things get difficult, demonstrate care for themselves and others, and practice positivity. From the starters to the fun movement games and challenges, the activities were designed to get girls to laugh, create, and grow. The kit includes the Power Up activity book, a “GRL PWR” T-shirt, a physical activity training plan, a completion certificate, and more, delivered directly to the

Ave., Philadelphia. Since 1867, the PSPCA has been dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and rescuing animals from abuse and neglect. The organization’s lifesaving programs for animals include a lowcost veterinary clinic, low-cost spay and neuter services, pet adoption facilities, and the PSPCA Humane Law Enforcement Department. The Lancaster County Community Foundation in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster County awarded the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) Lancaster Center a $2,000 grant to assist pet owners in need throughout the region. The funds have been put into action to provide pet food as families face the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus. The PSPCA Lancaster Center, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, is working to assist pet families in need and has provided hundreds of pounds of dry food and countless pounds of wet food to its clients. With other area resources shuttered, the PSPCA has worked to ensure that anyone who needs assistance feeding their dogs or cats during this time receives it. To ensure safety of the PSPCA Lancaster staff and the public, all pet food pantry pickups are done without physical contact. Families in need of assistance are asked to email lancaster@pspca.org, after which they will be contacted to determine their specific needs. They will then be given a time to pick up food at the center. The food is bundled and left outside the building with the identifying information of its recipients. “There has always been a need for access to pet food, but through this pandemic that need has increased dramatically,” said PSPCA Lancaster Center site director Lindsay High. “It is always our goal to support families and keep pets happy and healthy in their homes. Through this health and economic crisis, we are more dedicated than ever.” A fund has been created to purchase pet food and essential supplies. Donations will be used to continue the PSPCA’s efforts to provide resources for pet owners in need. Those who would like to contribute may visit www.pspca.org /communitypetfund. The PSPCA is a nonprofit organization headquartered at 350 E. Erie
