Flag Football Fun League Offers Activity For Adults With Disabilities

andy Samuels first heard of flag football for adults with disabilities during halftime of the professional football season championship. Later on, he heard from a parent of an adult with special needs who wanted to start a local league. He and Bev Magee, one of the founders of Aaron’s Acres, began looking into the possibility. The league was ready to kick off when COVID-19 restrictions hit, delaying the start of play. Now, the program, which is named the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League after Bev’s son, has partnered with Aaron’s Acres, and play is due to start on Saturday, Aug. 20. Games and cheerleading will be held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The league is open to participants ages 21 to 40 with varying abilities and disabilities. “We will make sure that everyone gets to kick

R

off and score a touchdown,” said Samuels, co-founder and coach for the league. “We will have buddies for those who can’t catch. (Buddies) can catch (the ball) for (players) and send them to the endzone.” Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, concurred. “Everybody plays no matter what, and everybody can cheerlead,” she said. Chuckie was a camper with Aaron’s Acres when the program was established in 1998. He was known for his happy face and warm embrace throughout the time he camped with Aaron’s Acres. “If you knew Chuckie, you loved him,” said Paskoff. “He was always smiling and always saying hi to everyone.” Chuckie passed away in 2015 at the age of 23. While the league was being organized, Samuels told his wife he wanted to name the program after Chuckie, but he did not tell Bev right away. He said that before connecting with Aaron’s Acres, he and Bev began visiting nonprofits looking for a partner for the league. See Flag Football pg 6

Theater Experience BY ANN MEAD ASH

BY ANN MEAD ASH

When three musical brothers are assigned a summer project, it is only natural that they would decide to hold a concert. In the case of Noah, Lucas, and Marcus Unruh, who live in the Conestoga Valley School District, that concert will benefit SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), which offers free music lessons to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students affected by parental incarceration. EHS Has A New Director

Brothers To Raise Funds For SWAN

Reji Woods is the new director of Ephrata High School theater.

As the new theater director for Ephrata High School (EHS), Reji Woods has a goal to give students a better theater experience than he had growing up in Gainesville, Fla. “I want to make sure students aren’t lacking in things (they could be introduced to),” said Woods, who took over the position in June. Woods hopes to expand how the program is offered. “Instead of just shows in the fall and spring, there will be a drama club and I will be the adviser,” noted Woods, who wants

to register the group in national acting societies. “So there’s (theater) community year round,” he explained. One way he hopes to expand the theater program is to bring in other theater professionals, including writers, to provide a week of summer workshops. “It would culminate in a showcase at the end of the camp,” said Woods. First introduced to EHS theater by former director Irving Gonzales, Woods came on board when he was asked to be a guest artist as the voice of the plant in a production of “Little Shop of Horrors.” See EHS pg 3

“(Gonzales) used it as a tool for me to talk to the kids about professional theater,” recalled Woods. “To teach (students) how a professional actor prepares.” Gonzales then asked Woods to be assistant director for the 2021-22 school year, later letting him know that he intended to retire in the spring of 2022 and encouraging Woods to apply. “I was at a crossroads,” said Woods, who had been balancing a career of acting with teaching his own students. “I wanted to (teach) on a more structured level and to get to see kids progress from freshman year to graduation. (The opportunity) set my heart into motion.” Professional acting was not Woods’ original career goal. “I went to school at first as a political science and economics double major,” said Woods, who served as a congressional intern and had a job offer at a political consulting firm on the table, when he realized it was not his dream. “My heart was in theater,” recalled Woods, who consulted with his mother on how to move forward. With her support, he attended University of Central Florida Conservatory Theater; in his senior year, he auditioned at the United Professional Theater Auditions in Memphis,

Tenn. He was offered a part in the 16-person “Psalms of David” revue playing at Living Waters, then part of Sight & Sound in Lancaster. When Woods finished that contract in 2006, he headed to New York City. He worked out of New York, traveling around the country and eventually around the world until 2010, when he returned to Sight & Sound. He was asked to stay to be part of “Voices of Christmas,” playing a character created for him. In 2013, he was ready to leave when he was offered a part in “Noah.” At that point, he was dating Lancaster County resident Audra Martin. He stayed for “Noah,” and he and Audra were married that year. Woods’ Lancaster County career also includes a solo cabaret at the Ware Center and “Portrait of a Lady,” a show honoring women, at The Trust in 2015. From 2016 to 2017, he served as artistic director at Cavod Academy, and he works with the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship competition. Nationally, he has been seen in television shows, and he was part of a group that appeared on “America’s Got Talent” in 2021. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet creatures native to Pennsylvania, which may include a red-tailed hawk, an Eastern screech owl, a great horned owl, a red rat snake, assorted insects, and a snapping turtle. The museum store, featuring candles, cards, books of historical interest, and the work of local craftspeople, will also be open for browsing and purchases at special discounts. Tickets include ice cream and admission to the property, and there is a discount for members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates. Tickets can be purchased in the Visitor Center on the day of the event. Proceeds from the event will support educational programming at Historic Ephrata Cloister, including the Ephrata Virtual Academy and Com-

Leo and Carol Maynard are the new owners of Zook’s Fabrics and Total Quilting Solutions, located at 3535 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse. Getting closer to retirement, they found that working on the completion and finishing of quilt tops was relaxing compared to the stress of the corporate world. Zook’s carries quilting fabrics, supplies and longarm services and offers beginner, intermediate and advanced sewing classes. The shop also features a Bernina Q-24 long arm sewing machine to help customers after finishing the stitching of their quilt top. The sewing machine can efficiently sew the final three layers together. This service can save a customer six to nine months of additional labor in the last stage of competing the quilt. family discussed the idea of holding a concert to raise funds for SWAN, he responded, “Why not? It sounds like fun.” The fundraiser grew out of Anu’s interest in keeping her sons learning and productive during the months when there is no school. “My mom came up with the idea of doing a project each summer,” explained Noah, who added that he and his brothers interviewed Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN in preparation for the project. “Before (undertaking this project), we knew (SWAN) helped traumatized kids in Lancaster County by teaching them music,” said Noah. “We learned that their parents might be in prison,” he added, noting that Vuolo - the brothers call her “Miss Diana” - shared situations that helped them better understand the mission of SWAN. SWAN offers one-hour afterschool music programs for students ages 6 to 18. Both group and private lessons are now held in 13 SDoL schools. SWAN also has a summer camp, which gives children 120 hours of instruction. Currently, SWAN receives referrals of students whose parents have a history of incarceration from intervention specialists and family counselors who work for the district. The Unruh brothers will display their musical talents with a little help from their mother, Anu, and younger sister, Liesl, when they hold a fundraiser for SWAN to “give music” and “empower dreams,” according to the event flyer, at Gospel of Grace Community Church, 45 N. Kinzer Road, Kinzers, at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11. A mix of music, including gospel tunes, will be played on a variety of instruments. Admission will be charged, and a meal, including a sub sandwich from Pasquale’s, chips, and a beverage, will be offered for a nominal cost. Those wishing to attend are asked to contact Noah at noah.unruh@gmail.com or Lucas at lucas.unruh@gmail.com by Friday, Aug. 5, for reservations. Noah, age 13, will play the saxophone and piano in the concert. “There’s a piece called ‘Irish Wedding,’ and it’s the longest piece I have ever played, and I will be playing that,” said Noah. Lucas, who is 12, plays the piano, violin, ukulele, and guitar. He will play a hymn, and he will play the guitar to accompany Anu, Marcus, and Liesl when they sing “Do-ReMi” from “The Sound of Music.” Marcus, age 8, is a pianist. He reported that his favorite song to play is the “William Tell Overture.” Lucas explained that when the

“The first one (we visited) asked for the name of the league,” Samuels recalled. “When we got outside, I told her, ‘I want to call it the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League,’” said Samuels, who noted that Bev was reduced to tears to have her son honored in such a way. So far, nearly 20 players and several cheerleaders have signed on with the league. Paskoff noted that volunteers age 15 and up are needed to help out and that sponsorship opportunities are available. Information for those wishing to partici-

pate in the league, volunteer, or sponsor the league is available at www.aaronsacres.org. Individuals who have questions about volunteering may email cmffl@ptd.net. Aaron’s Acres provides yearround recreational activities to children and adults in the greater Lancaster area. Paskoff noted that the flag football and cheerleading league is a natural extension of Aaron’s Acres’ programming for adults. “We have the same mission and desire (as the league) to provide these kinds of programs,” she said.
