Woodcrest Prepares For 12th 3D Archery Shoot BY ANN MEAD ASH

Knitting Together meets at Fairmount on Monday evenings to create hats to give away to those in need.

Fairmount Residents Form Knitting Group Thousands Of Hats Donated

hen Ezra “Ez” and Elizabeth Stoltzfus talked about moving from a farmette to Fairmount, Ez was concerned that he might not have enough to do at their new home. To assuage his concerns, Elizabeth taught Ez to make hats on a loom, a craft she had been introduced to by a Farm Crest apartment resident around 2011. “I got an interest in it because it was something to do,” said Ez, but Elizabeth sees her husband, now 92, as doing more than just staving off boredom. “Ez is an artist,” she noted. “I never taught him (to put colored) stripes in, but he does.” “I don’t want to keep it all one color,” said Ez. “When I get so far, I trade off to another color. (I choose) something that will blend

W

together (with the main color).” Ez’s understanding of blending colors goes beyond making hats. He took painting classes in the past, and in 2000 he painted a winter scene from his imagination. The painting hangs on the wall over the chair where Ez works with his hand-held loom, turning out about one adult hat every two days. Elizabeth finishes the tops of the hats for him, and the pair estimates that he has made and donated thousands in the 10 years he has been producing them. Elizabeth did not stop with teaching Ez. In the last year, she has taught several other residents to make hats on the loom, and the group - called Knitting Together meets on Monday evenings in the lobby of the Wheat Ridge apartment building. The hats they

make are distributed to Moldova, orphanages in Romania, and to other places where they are needed. A large number reach their final destinations via the Lamb’s Loom, a Texas-based ministry. Hats are also given to the knitters’ families and friends. Elizabeth happily displayed photos of children and others who have received the hats in locations around the world. Elizabeth explained that the hats can be made in four sizes, ranging from infants to two intermediate sizes for children and then adults. Knitting Together will accept donations of yarn but noted that cotton and wool are not preferred. Ez favors Orlon acrylic by Red Heart. Elizabeth noted that if a special color is needed, she and Ez will purchase it. Those who wish to donate

yarn may call 717-733-2242 to make arrangements. Knitting Together held its first meeting in October of 2020 after a Fairmount activity director challenged members of an exercise class to try something new. Elizabeth recalled that one of the residents said she was frustrated in her attempts to learn to knit on a loom. “My ears perked up,” said Elizabeth. “I made it known to her that I could probably help.” When more residents joined in the conversation, Elizabeth arranged for her and Ez and the others to meet in the lobby, and the group was formed. Members, in addition to Elizabeth, include Ruth Weaver, Elsie Stauffer, Anna Groff, Esther Becker, Ann Rathman, Edie Lausch, Edith Lorah, and Carol Sensenig. “We’re knitting together socially and spiritually,” said Elizabeth.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” is a well-known saying. It is a concept that organizers of the annual Woodcrest 3D Archery Shoot have found to work well. “We pretty much do the same thing over and over, and the guys still keep coming,” said Jason Martin, operations director for Woodcrest Retreat, a camp and conference center located at 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata.

Each Monday, a group of gentlemen gathers at the east end of the New Holland Community Memorial Park in the 400 block of Jackson Street. They are members of the Lancaster County Horseshoe League, a group that has been meeting in the park to play for more than three decades. Don Troupe, former New Holland chief of police, is among their number. “We come down here to have fun,” said Troupe, who has kept careful track of the development of the league since prior to its inception in 1985. Although the first meeting, attended by Paul Caudill Sr., Vernon Shenk, Jim Lafferty, and Harold Becker, was held in February 1985, Troupe said that the group dates back to 1981, when Lafferty first organized a horseshoe throwing contest for the New Holland Farmers Day Fair. In April 1985, Lafferty and Becker met with Warren Peachy at the park with a plan requesting that five courts be established in the area where the swimming pool had been located. The Farmers Day Association helped to cover the cost, and by the summer of 1985, the courts were installed and ready for a Farmers Day Fair team tournament on the first Saturday in October. In 1986, several non-sanctioned tournaments were held at the site, with the first National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) tournament held in August of 1986. By the summer of 1988, the organization was holding league pitching

on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It was decided that more courts were needed to accommodate the club members, and in December, construction began, with four additional courts completed in May of 1989. Because many planing mill employees pitched during lunch, the club approached mill president Jay Weber for assistance. “We went to him and asked him if he would finance the construction of (the four courts),” said

Troupe. “We went back after (the courts) were done and asked how we would pay off the loan, and he said it was a donation,” he recalled. The courts were all installed to NHPA specifications and authorization, so that NHPA competitions among that national group’s members could be held there. “There are national, state, and even world tournaments,” said Troupe, who added that Lancaster falls in the See Pitchin’ pg 7

A Story Of HOPE

GOLD BUYING

BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, an organization that helps create financial solvency in 15 countries through savings and microfinance groups, looks back on the last 18 months, he points out that the organization did something out of the ordinary in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We initially (gave) a lot of aid,” said Rutt, who noted that HOPE spent $1 million to help clients. Rutt praised HOPE CEO Peter Greer for his leadership of the organization through the tumultuous time. “(None of us) knew what we were

facing, but there was a lot of prayer, reliance on God, our board, our team, and the indigenous leaders and clients in the world,” he said. To help offset those expenditures, HOPE is looking for sponsors and golfers for its 21st annual golf tournament, to be held at three different locations on Friday, Sept. 17. The round at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave.,York, will begin at 1 p.m. Two rounds will be held the same day at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Dr., Lebanon, beginning at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. The third location will be Bridgewater Golf Club, 601 Chestnut Hill Road, York, beginning at 9 a.m. More information about the tournaments may be found at www.hopeinternational .org/pagolf. Those who wish to sponsor the event may email asmith@hopeinternational.org or call 717-464-3220, ext. 544. Golfers are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 3. Rutt noted that the pandemic pushed what he calls the “fragile fringe,” of about 100 million people below the poverty line. “But there were bright spots,” added Rutt. “There was resilience, and a lot of our clients have grown.” Rutt went on to tell the story of Marie Ndereyimana, a client in Burundi, East Africa. After Marie’s husband died in 2014, all his property reverted back to his family, as is the custom in that country. Marie was connected to a church that hosts a HOPE Interna-
