Inclement weather interfered with the 22nd annual COBYS Bike and Hike held in 2018. The bicycle and motorcycle rides were canceled, but the 3-mile walk soldiered on with 350 walkers braving the wet weather to help raise funds for the family services the organization provides. Earlier fundraisers had attracted between 400 and 500 attendees. Anne Stokes, director of development with COBYS, would like to see larger crowds at the 2019 Bike and Hike, and she and Doug May, COBYS’ communications and development manager, have planned to open this year’s Bike and Hike up to more area residents when it is held at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Sunday, Sept. 8. The

Participants in past COBYS Bike and Hike fundraisers have taken motorcycle rides or bike rides or just depended on foot power to help raise funds for COBYS, which provides a variety of family services to those in need in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. This year’s event will be held on Sept. 8. 65-mile motorcycle ride registration will begin at 12:45 p.m., and the ride will take off at 1:30 p.m. Registration for the walk and bicycle ride will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the 25-mile bike ride

will begin at 2 p.m. The walk and 10-mile bike ride will begin at 2:30 p.m. At 2 p.m., the COBYS family celebration will begin. “We are adding more family-friendly celebration pieces

throughout the afternoon,” explained Stokes. “We are looking to make sure that folks who might not know about COBYS will feel free to stop by and … learn about us.” The celebration will See Bike And Hike pg 7

A Tournament To Change Lives Weaver’s Store Will Celebrate 60 Years HOPE International Schedules Annual Fundraiser By Ann Mead Ash

Tucked away in an office building in the heart of Lancaster County is a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in all its forms, including spiritual, material, social, and personal. Working toward that end, in 22 years, the organization has loaned out $1.3 billion to 950,000 clients in 16 countries. While those figures are impressive, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, prefers to talk about the people the organization has helped. “It’s not about the numbers, it’s about guys like Nico,” said Rutt, referring to a rice farmer Rutt met in the Philippines during late 2018 and early 2019. Nico, who See HOPE International pg 2

Jeff Rutt (left), founder of HOPE International, stands with Nico, a rice farmer in the Philippines who was able to change his circumstances based on what he learned from a HOPE International savings group. Savings groups are funded by activities like HOPE’s annual golf outing, which will be held at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York on Sept. 13.

Weaver’s Store, with locations in Fivepointville, Leola and Spring Mills, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Staff members shown in the shoe department at the Fivepointville location are (from left) Isaac Zimmerman, Noah Reiff, Keri Weaver, Carolyn Stauffer and Jen Stauffer. In 1957, Ruth Weaver began selling used clothing, toys, footwear and household items from the basement of her home. By the summer of 1959, Irvin and Ruth Weaver opened a new store featuring all new merchandise at

lives on the island of Tacloban, has a dream of sending his sons to college. When his fishing business was wiped out in a 2013 typhoon that hit Tacloban and killed 7,000, Nico learned how to grow rice. “(Nico) got involved in a HOPE International savings group there, (participating in a) welcome, worship, Word, work, and wrap up group program,” explained Rutt. “He is just thriving.” Rutt asked Nico if he had advice for other farmers. “He said three things: ‘Trust God, work hard, and save,’” recalled Rutt. Rutt is offering area residents and businesses a chance to help more people like Nico by sponsoring and registering to attend the organization’s 19th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 13. attend the awards dinner. According to Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE, the tournament can comfortably accommodate a total of 230 golfers. Boycan explained that HOPE will reach even more countries by entering a partnership with Compassion International to train representatives in savings group programs. This year, HOPE will train Compassion staff members in Rwanda, Thailand, Kenya, Indonesia, and Tanzania. “We want to make a big difference. We want to collaborate for the kingdom,” explained Boycan. Rutt noted that it is important to train those who are indigenous to an area to oversee savings groups. He shared the story of Rosalie, a woman in the Philippines who was asked by a HOPE representative about her dreams. “She said she would love a house, but it is too big a dream,” relayed Rutt. “The indigenous leader, Florine, talked to her about big dreams and small steps toward them.” Rutt explained that the leader can relate to those in the groups in a realistic way.

“(Rosalie’s) group leader can say, ‘I grew up here, and I know what you’re going through,’” explained Rutt. Boycan noted that it is the design of the savings groups to give people a way to lift themselves from poverty. “The microfinancing and savings groups restore dignity and help break the cycle of poverty,” said Boycan. “People feel terrible when they are unable to take care of their families, (but) you see their dignity restored when they realize, ‘I am capable. God has given me the gifts that I need, and I can (take care of my family).’” Last year, HOPE exceeded its goal of raising $350,000 from the tournament.

CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health, has announced the expansion of its safe medication disposal program in Pennsylvania, adding disposal units in 80 CVS Pharmacy stores in communities across the state by the end of the year. This is in addition to the existing 26 units already installed, bringing the in state total to 106. Promptly disposing unused medications can help reduce the potential that they will be diverted or misused. Nationwide, the company has installed more than 1,300 in-store safe medication disposal units. The company has also donated more than 970 units to community organizations such as police departments, including 135 units in Pennsylvania. Through this national effort, 408 metric tons, or around 900,000 pounds, of unwanted medication has been collected, including over 41,000 pounds in Pennsylvania alone. CVS Pharmacy plans to roll out additional safe medication disposal units across the country by the end of 2019 as

part of a commitment announced at the end of last year to help provide more disposal options in communities. The company is also partnering with Google Maps to make it easier for consumers to find yearround medication disposal options. CVS Health’s commitment to helping prevent and address prescription drug misuse extends to community education and increasing access to the opioid overdose-

Funds raised through sponsorships and individual participants will aid COBYS’ general budget, which provides family services in several specific areas. “COBYS (offers) foster care, adoption, counseling, and family life education services, which includes workshops, parenting courses, and kinship navigator services,” explained Stokes. A good share of Lancaster County experienced a devastating storm on May 28 and KAUFFMAN’S orchards were not spared. Hail, driven by a strong wind, fell for about ten minutes - plenty of time to permanently mar many, many (most?) of the tiny fruitlets on our trees. It is to be some of the worst damage our Orchard has seen in over 70+ years! So although this year our fruit may look less than perfect on the outside, nothing has changed on the inside. KAUFFMAN’S peaches are just as delicious, and just as nutritious, as ever you experienced in years gone by! So come in and enjoy some delicious, juicy peaches all season long at a great, great price.
