or people who can’t get to the pool or go on vacation, they can enjoy a little water activity,” said Keith Shetter, one of the organizers of the Zion Lutheran Church Water Slide Day, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20. “We are able to bring four hours of oasis to them. It’s all free.” The event, which will include three large water slides, free food, and entertainment, will be held at the church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, from noon to 4 p.m. The event was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but it returned last year. “At first we purchased water slides and kiddie pools,” recalled Shetter of the original summer event. Later, organizers decided to bring in professionals, engaging Big

“We are able to bring four hours of oasis to them. It’s all free.” Entertainment will include a visit by Papa Tater, who will perform his own brand of magic. Music will be provided by church member Kurt Benit, known for original songs as well as playing keyboards, guitar, and harmonica. A juggler will be on site, and Franklin the miniature therapy horse, a volunteer with Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS), will visit. Apparatus from the East Lampeter Township Police Department and the Upper Leacock Fire Company will
also be at the church during the event. Zion Church members will cook up free barbecues and hot dogs and provide snacks for attendees to enjoy. “People who need a break can come into the multipurpose room to sit down and recharge,” said Shetter. Steps to Success, a Leola preschool and day care service that moved into the church in 2021, will partner with Zion Lutheran for the event. Updates on the Water Slide Day may be found by searching for “Zion Lutheran Church Leola” on Facebook. More information about the church is available at www.zionleola.org. church where they can continue to grow spiritually. “We help them blast off, but they have to utilize the resources in the community,” said Santiago. So, for RTCM’s sixth annual fall banquet, the organization is aiming to give attendees the resources to help them blast off by featuring a star of the Christian publishing world Josh McDowell, author of “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” along with about 150 other books. The event will be held at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Call of Grace Band will provide special music for the event, door prizes will be given away, and a freewill offering to benefit the ministry will be received. For McDowell, who has spoken in more than 100 countries, responding positively to RTCM’s request simply lined up with the goals of his nearly 60 years of ministry. “Restart’s mission is where my heart is with young people,” said McDowell, who noted that many of the problems of life begin during youth. “If I am going to have a lasting impact, I have to start with young people,” he said, adding that building confidence and positive relationships can prepare young people to deal with issues they may face later. McDowell noted that developing an honest self-image is especially important. “How you see yourself will determine most relationships,” he explained. “If you cannot accept yourself as you are with your blemishes and your positive points, you cannot trust somebody else to accept you. As a result, you don’t establish close relationships.” Conversely, McDowell added, if we can see ourselves as God sees us, we can trust others to as well. Recalling his passion to write “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” considered a highly influential Christian book, McDowell shared that he was inspired by his student peers. “When I went off to college, I was bitter, hurt, mad, ticked off,” said McDowell, who noticed a group of students who seemed to have a genuine love and care for those around them. “That got my attention,” said McDowell, who asked the students what

returns or exchanges. These are brand-new items,” said Ebersole. Bareville Fire Company has an all-volunteer force of about 40 firefighters. In addition to the engine, the company has a ladder truck and a squad unit for traffic control. LCAA To Hold “Still Super” Yard Sale BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA) will host its “Still Super” yard sale at 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spaces at the sale, measuring 10 by 10 feet, are available to the public for a set price, and vendors will need to bring their own table and display equipment. The deadline to register is Sunday, Aug. 21. Although LCAA has a consistent stream of offerings to the community, this will be the first year the yard sale has been held. “We thought this would be a great way to raise funds for the association,” said Patricia Keller, a member of the art association. “It’s also a nice way for artists to sell their work and get commission. It supports individuals as well as LCAA as a whole.” Donations are also being accepted for LCAA’s table, excluding large items, clothes and electrical appliances and devices. Donations may be dropped off at the LCAA on Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon
to 4 p.m. “The goal is just to raise funds any way we can,” said Keller. “The pandemic hurt us, and we’re trying to get back.” Similarly to LCAA’s Artist’s Attic sale, the yard sale will offer the general public an opportunity to purchase artwork made by local talent at a discounted price, as well as learn more about the art association, which recently celebrated its 85th anniversary. The Artist’s Attic will be held from Aug. 21 to Thursday, Sept. 8, and all LCAA members may contribute framed or unframed work. People’s Choice awards will be given, and 40% of the commission on sales will benefit the LCAA. The LCAA has offered many opportunities for the community throughout the decades since its inception, including art classes, lectures and a new show every six weeks. Keller, a watercolor painter, has been a member for 35 years and has helped hang artwork at shows and volunteered time to help with several other projects. “We have a lot of youth classes,” Keller said. “I want young people to appreci-
ate the arts. It’s important to explore your creativity because it affects so many other areas. Your creative mind affects everything.” The LCAA is always accepting new members and volunteers of any age, with members being granted yearlong access to shows and activities such as art classes. Keller
noted that the best ways to support the art association are to make a contribution and come see a show, all of which are free with an opportunity to donate. To register for the yard sale or for more information on the LCAA, call Keller at 717-687-7061 or visit www.lcaaonline.org.

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic (inherited) condition – it is passed from parents to their children through their genes. Alpha-1 may result in serious lung disease in adults and/or liver disease at any age. For each trait a person inherits, there are usually two genes; one gene comes from each parent. People with Alpha-1 have received two abnormal alpha-1 antitrypsin genes. One of these abnormal genes came from their mother and one from their father. Alpha-1 is a rare disease that is even more rarely diagnosed, with over 90% of patients thought to be undiagnosed. Alpha-1 is the #1 known genetic risk factor for COPD and may be a contributing cause for up to 3% of COPD cases in the United States. Alpha -1 testing is recommended by ATS, CHEST, COPD foundation, WHO and GOLD.

A registration cost is set per person and includes the skate rental and additional equipment for borrowing. “The overall goal for the program is to teach the basic fundamentals of skating in a fun environment,” said Melissa Spittler,
Learn to Skate director. “We will teach any level of skater we have, anyone from children with special needs to advanced adult skaters.” The courses offer a wide range of insight on ice skating, applicable to many different skating related pursuits. Lessons are made to be relevant for those who are looking to enjoy skating recreationally, pursue figure skating or hone their ice hockey skills. Learn to Skate also offers free classes year-round and plans to post additional courses to keep the schedule flexible for families and allow participants to bring a friend who is interested in trying skating. “We really try to make skating fun,” Spittler said. “The adult group is held at the same time as the kids’ group so

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts’ annual name-the-arrangement contest is getting a head start on fall. The new all-around arrangement features a ceramic pumpkin, measures 12 inches high and 10 inches wide and features carnations and daisy poms in fall colors. To view the arrangement and enter the contest, visit www.royers.com/contest. There is a limit of one entry daily per email address through Friday, Aug. 12.
