Volunteers pack lunches for Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services’ summer lunch program.

Feeding CV’s Children BY ANN MEAD ASH

rior to the summer of 2020, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) offered a summer lunch club for children in the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD). The clubs met at three area locations on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Children could enjoy lunch in the park with other club members or take lunch

P

home. In 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the lunch club morphed into a grab-and-go service in the same three locations. For 2021, the grab-and-go model remains in place. Jonathan Barrett, who recently became director at CVCCS, reported that three lunches per child are available for pickup in one of three locations from 11 a.m. to noon each Tuesday. Locations are Flory Park, 416 Dohner Drive,

Lancaster; Country Club Apartments, 323 Aaron Lane, Lancaster; and Ebenezer Evangelical Congregational Church, 23 S. State St., Brownstown. CVCCS also delivers lunches to a summer camp held at Leola Elementary School. “Meals are free and open to all children 18 and younger in CVSD,” noted Barrett. CVCCS director of operations Tom Brady said that about 130 people total are served weekly.

Barrett shared that Monday is prep day, when about eight volunteers arrive at CVCCS, 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, to help put together the lunches. On Tuesday, four delivery drivers and at least one helper per site distribute the lunches. Summer lunch coordinator Emma Arnold said that the rest of the week is spent planning, shopping, and cooking to prepare for the following week. See CVCCS pg 4

During the period when COVID-19 restrictions were in place, the work of children’s ministry leaders was made especially difficult. Unable to meet with children in person, the children’s pastors were pushed to become more creative than in the past in order to reach youngsters via virtual means. For those who take part in CONNECT Children’s Ministry, a program of Lancaster Bible College (LBC), a resource to help inspire innovations was already in place. CONNECT, which has been bringing together children’s ministry leaders for the purposes of networking, brainstorming, and fellowship for several years, was created by Deb Hinkel, former director of the Children and Family Ministries at LBC. In the spring of 2020, the group began meeting online. In addition to bringing together more than 50 ministry leaders each month, the virtual gatherings featured wellknown speakers from around the world and attracted attendees from up and down the East Coast of the United States. branch and Steps to Success decided to move to a different location, the only two remaining occupants this year were Veritas and the township. In recent years, Veritas had begun to outgrow its allotted space in their building, with a consistently growing student population. Now that Veritas has full ownership of the property, the school can both plan for expansion and better use the space in the current structure. The school’s immediate plans for the building include overhauling the HVAC system and replacing parts of

the roof, both of which date back to the building’s beginnings. In the future, the school plans to enlarge the gymnasium, add classrooms, and expand spaces to accommodate the school’s growing arts, athletics, electives, and other extracurricular programs. For decades, Veritas has generally operated with one class per grade, but the ultimate goal of the school is to expand to two classes per grade. This school year, enrollment has grown to the point that the school is adding a second kindergarten and

first-grade class to accommodate students on its waiting list. “We are so thankful that the Lord has provided us with a home where we can put down our roots and continue to grow,” said Ty Fischer, Veritas head of school. “The generosity of our donors and the faithful prayers of our whole school community helped make this possible, and with the consistent growth in enrollment we’ve seen over the years, it’s great to know we have room to accommodate our expanding programs and student body.”

Veritas Academy recently began renovations on its building, which the school had officially purchased via public auction on April 27. The more than 47,000-square-foot building is located on a 12-acre property at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, where Veritas had been a tenant since 1999. Built in 1955, the facility originally served as the Leola Elementary School. Most recently, the building was home to the offices of Upper Leacock Township, which owned the building and leased space to Veritas, Steps to Success Daycare and the Leola Branch of the Lancaster Public Library. Local farmers donate fresh produce, and Arnold makes sure food is stored and prepared in accordance with safety regulations. “We do buy some fresh produce, and I have been using a lot of extra from my garden,” said Arnold, who added that all the meat and prepackaged items, like chips, are donated. Barrett is excited about the happenings at CVCCS, and he is glad to be part of the organization. Barrett studied journalism prior to coming to know the Lord. After he was called to the ministry, he received his Master of Divinity from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., and then served as a full-time minister for six years before moving to the Lancaster area, where the Lord opened a door at CVCCS. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit https://cvccs.org.

Arnold aims to provide variety in lunches that meet nutritional requirements. “This is sloppy joes, and this is celery and peanut butter,” she said, pointing out some of the foods waiting to be packaged into lunches. “There are certain requirements as far as what has to be included in every meal, but I try to make it varied and fun for the kids within those constraints.” According to Barrett, Arnold is succeeding. “This smells good and looks good,” he said, referring to the macaroni and cheese with vegetables being packaged on one table. Arnold uses creativity as she works with the foods that are donated for the lunches. Barrett said that CVCCS receives lunch items from Sheetz, Giant Foods, and Starbucks, which donates ready-to-eat items.

When St. Peter’s Preschool, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, shut down in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions in March of 2020, teachers left their classrooms and did not return until the summer of 2021. Until the teachers were able to begin to prepare for the school’s reopening on Monday, Sept. 13, calendars, lists of student names, and seasonal classroom decorations remained locked in time. Now, all that is changing, as teachers and Heather Cramer, St. Peter’s Preschool director, work to get ready for the arrival of new students. Cramer anticipates a few changes when the parents line up cars to drop off the children on the first day. “We will be a bit smaller than in the past to give a little more social distance for children,” said Cramer, who has reduced class size from 16 students to 12 with a teacher and assistant. There will be a class for young 3-year-olds meeting three days a week and classes for 4- and 5-year-olds that meet five days a week with an option for four days a

week. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon each weekday. In addition to classrooms, children will have scheduled access to a courtyard playground outfitted with a variety of equipment and a material on the ground that facilitates soft landings. A gym area provides bikes, hula hoops, and other types of indoor play equipment. One of the classrooms has been turned into a children’s library that students can visit. It also provides waiting space for parents who visit. Cramer has decorated the area with characters from children’s books such as “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” When some teachers retired at the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, they chose to donate educational resources to St. Peter’s. “They left toys, games, and puzzles,” noted Cramer. “We had what we needed for classes, so we offered gently used toys to Milagro House, (Gaudenzia) Vantage House (and others).” In addition, toys were donated to Miracle Center Fellowship, a nondenominational place of worship in Mount Joy that used the items to set up a Sunday school program and vacation Bible camp.

International Fun Day Planned Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host an outdoor International Fun Day on Saturday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the case of rain, the event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28. The event will include booths representing various countries, with each one providing an activity. Participants will receive a “passport” to be stamped at each booth, and each person who completes his or her passport will receive a small prize, along with information about the church. Additional activities and free food will also be available. Local musician Stu Huggens will play country music from 10:15 to 11 a.m. and from noon to 12:45 p.m. A dance company from Palo-

ma School of Irish Dance will perform from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. A bike obstacle course with a pedestrian option in the church parking lot will give a nod to the Tour de France, and children may enjoy a bounce house reminiscent of Russian architecture. In addition to those previously mentioned, countries to be represented include the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan, Nigeria, Scotland, and Venezuela. Huggens’

music and the hot dog lunch will represent the United States. To add to the event’s international flavor, the church has invited families with children participating in the Leap Into Language program. Led through a partnership between the School District of Lancaster, IU13 Refugee Center, and Eastern Mennonite Missions, this program seeks to enhance language skills of refugee children whose resettlement was sponsored by Church World Service. Earlier in the summer, as part of a stay-at-home service project, junior and senior high school youths from the congregation participated in afternoon activities at Elizabeth Martin Elementary School with children and youths enrolled in this program.

Awards, now in its 76th year, recognizes achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ephrata Cloister staff re-imagined its holiday program tradition, which has been presented for more than 40 years, as virtual programs. The result was three virtual programs. Candlelight Chat was a Facebook Live conversation with a re-enactor portraying Ephrata householder Michael Miller. A 40-minute recorded version of Christmas at the Cloister featured photo collage images of the Cloister and previously recorded music by the Ephrata Cloister Chorus; this event was presented via Zoom and YouTube. “Witness to History,” a 40-minute film shown via Zoom and YouTube, featured Ephrata’s student historians and explored Ephrata Cloister’s role as a hospital in 1777 and 1778. This year, AASLH conferred 38 national awards honoring people, projects, exhibits, and publications. AASLH chose recipients that it feels represent the best in the field and that provide leadership for the future of state and local history. For more information about the Leadership in History Awards, contact AASLH at 615-320-3203 or visit www.aaslh.org. Kobi Martin, pastor of children’s ministries at Hopewell Church in Elverson, participated, and he appreciated the opportunity to gain perspective. “For me, the most valuable thing … is a space to step out of all the little details of ministry to take a look at the big picture,” he said. “CONNECT provides the time and space to talk about what we are really trying to accomplish and hear the successes, failures, and struggles of other children’s ministries.” Mary Edwards, director of KidMin at Gateway Church, Parkesburg, noted that the timing of the presentation about “Online Children’s Ministry” at a November 2019 gathering well before COVID-19 restrictions were in place, was especially helpful to her. “Dr. Sarah Holmes Zoomed into our time together, (and) she taught us methods to engage children virtually through various teaching styles,” recalled Edwards. Once the pandemic hit, CONNECT became an invaluable resource. “(CONNECT) was super helpful during the pandemic when suddenly all the rules changed, and we all needed to figure out how to redefine success, how to use new resources, and not lose our minds at the same time,” said Martin. He pointed out that CONNECT organizers calling in speakers from across the globe during virtual meetings was “super cool and encouraging.” Edwards said that her involvement in CONNECT has given her tools to strengthen her ministry and that she often returns from meetings with information she can use to train her KidMin leaders at the church. During the pandemic, she was inspired to offer a Remote Learning Center in the church, where students had a safe space

that provided Wi-Fi and allowed students to complete school assignments while parents worked. Esther Zimmerman, interim chair of Church and Ministry Leadership at LBC, who currently heads up the program, said that the group will begin meeting in the Olewine Dining Commons at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on select Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Planned meeting dates include Sept. 16, Oct. 21, and Nov. 18. In 2022, meetings are planned for Jan. 27, Feb. 24, and April 28. A special evening event will be held on March 24. More information about LBC may be found by visiting www.lbc.edu.
