Donation To Help Fight Addiction BY ANN MEAD ASH Lori Breece, manager with United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs, especially likes coming to work on Wednesdays because that is when Quincy, a UDS ambassador dog, spends the day with her. “(Quincy) is the best dog,” said Breece. “This morning, I dropped a paper towel, and he picked it up and gave it to me.” Quincy was trained to be a full-service dog, but health issues kept him from that role.

A Chance To Tell A Story
Both drum major Jayka Weder and assistant drum major Cassie Mockler reacted positively when they learned that this year’s Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) fall band show would be called “Alice” and based on “Alice in Wonderland.” Mockler was excited to do a show that tells a story. Weder added, “I am very hopeful for the potential for the show.” Band director Brandon Nase said that the original composition is meant to emulate the various aspects of “Alice in Wonderland,” beginning when Alice falls down the rabbit hole. The show is constructed in several parts with a 30-second introduction called the Prologue, which moves into Chapter 1, where Alice begins to explore Wonderland. The ballad is called Chapter 2, and it focuses on a metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly. Chapter 3 represents a battle between Alice and the Queen of Hearts, and the Epilogue focuses on Alice searching for an opportunity to escape Wonderland.
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Three props will aid band members in telling the story. One will resemble a book and will indicate to audience members which chapter is being represented. Another will be a door that will move to expand the area of Wonderland on the field, and a third will have a side that represents the scenery of Wonderland, with the opposite side resembling a topColorhat. guard and band members will also represent different themes with uniforms and equipment. A flag with the face of the Cheshire Cat will be used, and butterfly swing flags will enhance the message of the ballad. The color guards will use rifles while the band members in uniform represent the queen’s army in Chapter 3. “In the Epilogue, there will be a flag that is red with a crown wrapped in a heart for the queen’s army,” said Nase. “That flag will be torn off and under will be a blue flag to give the homage back to Alice.” In addition, one color guard’s uniform will represent Alice.
According to Cliff Sweigart with the Weaver Insurance Group of Elizabethtown, located in Mount Joy, the Westfield Insurance Foundation’s Legacy of Caring Fund is available to a select number of insurance agents. These agents are given the opportunity to nominate a nonprofit organization to receive a donation.Sweigart is friends with John Wagner, a member of the board of The Potter’s House, a nonprofit organization that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release The Potter’s House pg

help the canines learn the specific skills for that role. In addition to full-service dogs, UDS trains companion dogs that work with clients at home. Breece explained that these dogs do not wear a vest or have the same public access rights as service dogs, but they make significant contributions to an individual’s independence. Barley pointed out that Oliver is a service dog that was placed in the home of a woman with mobility issues. “Oliver can open a sliding glass door for her and close it again, and he can fetch anything she has dropped,” she explained. The need for facility dogs has “exploded” since 2016, according to Breece. Secondary trainer Susan Vollmar works with puppy trainer and breeder Kristy Conrad to place facility dogs, mostly in schools. “For our last fiscal year, we added 18 schools to our waiting list,” said Breece. “(Facility dogs) have a lot of the same training (as service dogs),” she said. Vollmar noted that dogs work with handlers from the facility, who receive training at UDS and at the school. She noted that dogs can mediate a student crisis, often helping to de-escalate a student who might otherwise have to be sent home. Facility dogs also serve as nonjudgmental “read” dogs, helping students who struggle with reading to practice and gain confidence. Breece explained that UDS trains Labradors because the dogs learn quickly and will change allegiance easily. The organization is always seeking funding for the care and training of puppies. “We are bringing in 14 to 18 new puppies each year, and our current waiting list for facility dogs working in Lancaster and York counties has reached 20 as well as our having a healthy waiting list for mobility service dogs,” she explained, noting that puppies may be sponsored by businesses, employees of businesses, churches, or other groups. More information about the services the organization provides may be found at www.udservices.org. person inherits, there are usually two genes; one gene comes from each parent. An alto saxophone solo will be featured in the beginning of the show, followed by a trumpet solo, with another trumpet solo in the ballad. The 52 members of the band, including 12 color guards, met from Aug. 1 through 5 and 8 through 12 to work on mastering first the music and then the drill, which they will perform at football games as well as at a show at Hempfield High School on Saturday, Sept. 10; at their own show on Saturday, Sept. 17; and at a Cavalcade of Bands competition in Hershey on Saturday, Nov. 12. To help band members get to know each other and raise morale, band camp Olympics were held daily. Nase divided the band into teams that incorporate members from different sections. “The first day is drumhead discus, and we see who can throw it the farthest,” said Mockler, who noted that other activities included dresslike-a-staff-member day. “It’s a way to help band members get to know each other more and have a lot of fun and give us a break during the day as well to relax and enjoy ourselves,” she explained.Mockler noted that she was proud of what marchers had accomplished during camp, stating that the music is not easy to learn. Weder is looking forward to seeing the show on the field. “I think it will be a fun and successful show,” Weder said.

The EPA-approved restoration plan, developed by Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) watershed coordinator Brian Gish in Pennsylvania, is now eligible for federal funding through Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. Section 319 funding addresses non-point source pollution from agriculture, stormwater, and acid mine drainage. To qualify for the federal dollars, the water body must be impaired and have an approved plan to make it unimpaired. Portions of the Pequea Creek Watershed began appearing on the state’s list of impaired waters in 1996, 1998, and 2000, due to excessive nutrient and sedimentWithinloading.the 153-square-mile Pequea Creek watershed, Section 319 funding will be used to keep soils and nutrients on the land instead of in the water with practices such as cover crops, no-till agriculture, nutrient management, animal waste management, riparian buffers, streambank fencing, streambank stabilization, and reducing legacy sediment.
