A Climb To Remember BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Commemorating And Raising Awareness Pennsylvania Riding Club To Hold Event BY ANN MEAD ASH
“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to
organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020. Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap
between the biker community and the (Plain) community.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will leave at noon and follow a route that will

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our country. Between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that tragic day. Among them were 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters. In 1992, Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which has developed and expanded programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and coworkers. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. The first stair climb was held on Sept. 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each subsequent year, attendance grew, and in

Prior to the summer of 2020, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) offered a summer lunch club for children in the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD). The clubs met at three area locations on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Children could enjoy lunch in the park with other club members or take lunch home. In 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the lunch club morphed into a graband-go service in the same three locations. For 2021, the grab-and-go model remains in place. Jonathan Barrett, who recently became director at CVCCS, reported that three lunches per child are available for pickup in one of three locations from 11 a.m. to noon each Tuesday. Locations are Flory Park, 416 Dohner Drive, Lancaster; Country Club Apartments, 323 Aaron Lane, Lancaster; and Ebenezer Evangelical Congregational Church, 23 S. State St., Brownstown. CVCCS also delivers lunches to a summer camp held at Leola Elementary School. “Meals are free and open to
all children 18 and younger in CVSD,” noted Barrett. CVCCS director of operations Tom Brady said that about 130 people total are served weekly. Barrett shared that Monday is prep day, when about eight volunteers arrive at CVCCS, 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, to help put together the lunches. On Tuesday, four delivery drivers and at least one helper per site distribute the lunches. Summer lunch coordinator Emma Arnold said that the rest of the week is spent planning, shopping, and cooking to prepare for the following week. Arnold aims to provide variety in lunches that meet nutritional requirements. “This is sloppy joes, and this is celery and peanut butter,” she said, pointing out some of the foods waiting to be packaged into lunches. “There are certain requirements as far as what has to be included in every meal, but I try to make it varied and fun for the kids within those constraints.” According to Barrett, Arnold is succeeding. “This smells good and looks good,” he said, referring to the macaroni and cheese with vegeta-

bles being packaged on one table. Arnold uses creativity as she works with the foods that are donated for the lunches. Barrett said that CVCCS receives lunch items from Sheetz, Giant Foods, and Starbucks, which donates ready-to-eat items. Local farmers donate fresh produce, and Arnold makes sure food is stored and prepared in accordance with safety regulations. “We do buy some fresh produce, and I have been using a lot of extra from my garden,” said Arnold, who added that all the meat and prepackaged items, like chips, are
donated. Barrett is excited about the happenings at CVCCS, and he is glad to be part of the organization. Barrett studied journalism prior to coming to know the Lord. After he was called to the ministry, he received his Master of Divinity from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., and then served as a full-time minister for six years before moving to the Lancaster area, where the Lord opened a door at CVCCS. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit https://cvccs.org.

leaves ECC. In addition, the Greencastle American Legion Riders Color Guard will be present. There is no charge to take part, but Jennifer requested that those who plan to participate search for “Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride” on Facebook and indicate their intent to attend. A similar ride last year attracted more than 700 riders. “There were probably 3,000 people (gathered at ECC before we left),” noted Wayne. Organizers anticipate having coffee and possibly doughnuts at ECC prior to the ride. They are hoping to provide volunteer traffic control and to have members of the Bird-inHand Fire Company that organized early searches for Stoltzfoos present. Opportunities to donate to those organizations will be presented. Following the ride, chicken meals and ice cream will be available for purchase at Weaverland.

Veritas Academy Begins Renovations Library System closed the Leola branch and Steps to Success decided to move to a different location, the only two remaining occupants this year were Veritas and the township. In recent years, Veritas had begun to outgrow its allotted space in their building, with a consistently growing student population. Now that Veritas has full ownership of the property, the school can both plan for expansion and better use the space in the current structure. The school’s immediate plans for the building include overhauling the HVAC system and replacing parts of the roof, both of which date back to the building’s beginnings. In the
future, the school plans to enlarge the gymnasium, add classrooms, and expand spaces to accommodate the school’s growing arts, athletics, electives, and other extracurricular programs. For decades, Veritas has generally operated with one class per grade, but the ultimate goal of the school is to expand to two classes per grade. This school year, enrollment has grown to the point that the school is adding a second kindergarten and first-grade class to accommodate students on its waiting list. “We are so thankful that the Lord has provided us with a home where

Veritas Academy recently began renovations on its building, which the school had officially purchased via public auction on April 27. The more than 47,000-square-foot building is located on a 12-acre property at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, where Veritas had been a tenant since 1999. Built in 1955, the facility originally served as the Leola Elementary School. Most recently, the building was home to the offices of Upper Leacock Township, which owned the building and leased space to Veritas, Steps to Success Daycare and the Leola Branch of the Lancaster Public Library. Members of the Lancaster 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb Committee stand beside Manheim Township’s steel beam from the World Trade Center.
2010, the original Denver team partnered with the NFFF to create a template that would enable coordinators to host 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs anywhere in the United States. Eleven years ago, Scott Yuill, a volunteer firefighter at the East Petersburg Fire Company, was surfing the internet and discovered the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Yuill decided to organize a stair climb in Lancaster because he knew someone who had lost his life during the terrorist attacks. The Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has always been held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “The idea is for participants to think about the sacrifice those 343 men made that day,” said Yuill. “With everything else that’s been going on, I think we’ve all forgotten.” The Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Firefighters will have the option of wearing turnout gear and

carrying equipment. All participants will receive a photo badge of one of the fallen firefighters as well as a Tshirt, which is included in registration. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. Although encouraged, preregistration is not required because there will be same-day registration. To preregister, visit https://lancasterstairclimb.org/ registration. Spectators are welcome. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs fund programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development will host its 33rd annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival this year. BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Every year, the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, serves more than 4,000 children. The Schreiber Center provides outpatient and in-home pediatric therapy services, such as occupational, physical, and speech-language therapy, for children from birth to the age of 21. In addition, the Schreiber Center offers early education preschool and child care services, recreational programs, behavioral health services, summer camps, and specialized classes for parents. “The people at Schreiber are amazing,” said Lititz resident Michael Mengel. When Michael’s youngest daughter, Nicole Mengel,
was 2 years old, she received speechlanguage therapy from Schreiber until she began kindergarten. “Nicole would not be where she is now without the help of Schreiber,” stated Michael. Nicole recently graduated from Adelphi University in Long Island with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. On Sunday, Sept. 12, the Schreiber Center will host its 33rd annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival. This rain-or-shine event will take place from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. There will be food, pony rides, face painting, and more. Attendees will see a race between nearly 25,000 ducks as they float down the Conestoga River. When people register for a racing
duckie, they can receive a themed souvenir duckie. Themes include superheroes and ninjas, down on the farm, tech and gaming, foodie, and more. “Schreiber can’t operate without the support of the community,” said Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations at Schreiber. “All of the money we raise from this event will benefit the children of Schreiber.” To purchase a duckie or make a donation, visit https://bit.ly/duckie sale2021. Welcoming A New Day BY ANN MEAD ASH
When St. Peter’s Preschool, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, shut down in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions in March of 2020, teachers left their classrooms and did not return until the summer of 2021. Until the teachers were able to begin to prepare for the school’s reopening on Monday, Sept. 13, calendars, lists of student names, and seasonal classroom decorations remained locked in time. Now, all that is changing, as teachers and Heather Cramer, St. Peter’s Preschool director, work to get ready for the arrival of new students. Cramer anticipates a few changes when the parents line up cars to drop off the children on the first day. “We will be a bit smaller than in the past to give a little more social distance for children,” said Cramer, who has reduced class size from 16 students to 12 with a teacher and assistant. There will be a class for young 3-year-olds meeting three days a week and classes for 4and 5-year-olds that meet five days a week with an option for four days a week. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon each weekday. In addition to classrooms, children will have scheduled access to a courtyard playground outfitted with
a variety of equipment and a material on the ground that facilitates soft landings. A gym area provides bikes, hula hoops, and other types of indoor play equipment. One of the classrooms has been turned into a children’s library that students can visit. It also provides waiting space for parents who visit. Cramer has decorated the area with characters from children’s books such as “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” When some teachers retired at the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, they chose to donate educational resources to St. Peter’s. “They left toys, games, and puzzles,” noted Cramer. “We had what we needed for classes, so we offered gently used toys to Milagro House, (Gaudenzia) Vantage House (and others).” In addition, toys were donated to Miracle Center Fellowship, a nondenominational place of worship in Mount Joy that used the items to set up a Sunday school program and vacation Bible camp. Another change is an extended lunch program, which will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. “(Students) will have the option of signing up for Prayground,” said Cramer, who said that this activity will be led by either herself or Sister Dottie Almoney, director of educa-

Cramer, who has early childhood and elementary education degrees from Millersville University, has contacted her alma mater about helping students with observation experience. “(Millersville) students could read a story, observe, or do a lesson plan,” she said. “They could come in for that experience.” Readers who would like to learn more about the preschool may visit www.stpeterslutheran.org/preschool/ or call 717-569-9211.
