The Show Must Go On Area Theaters Reopen In Green Phase By Ann Mead Ash

The Magic and Wonder Theater opened on July 20 with adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

The Bird-in-Hand Stage, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, has several years of presenting live entertainment, including local performers interspersed with original Blue Gate Musicals shows focused on the Plain community. Starting in 2016, Brett and Labrina Myers provided shows for Bird-in-Hand before preparing to open their own Magic and Wonder Theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise. Bird-in-Hand’s 2020 season was slated to start on April 2. Magic and Wonder’s first show ever in the venue, “Worlds of Wonder,” was planned to launch on April 8. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, however, neither theater opened in

April, but Magic and Wonder opened on July 20, and Bird-in-Hand is holding two shows starting in August. To open in accordance with green phase regulations, theaters may be at 50% capacity. “We can seat about 175 people (under green), but we will probably do less than that,” said Terry Ryan and Friends will play at the Bird-in-Hand Stage through Oct. 17. Gifts That Give Hope Fair Moves Online Prayers And Encouragement Local Families Adopt Cops

A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift, especially for those who do not need anything in particular. Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful

Tina Edgell (left) and Sue Esh have both led Adopt A Cop efforts in recent months. Esh helped find families to adopt 133 Lancaster police department officers, and Edgell found families for the East Lampeter and West Earl police officers. The families provide encouragement to their adoptees.

On June 11, Sue Esh of Gordonville was trying to take a nap, but her phone kept beeping. The beeping was alerting Esh to a text from her sister who lives in Tennessee. “She was texting and saying I needed to do something for the Lancaster police,” recalled Esh, whose sister was reacting to a Facebook post from leadership at the Lancaster City Bureau of Police. Esh reposted the item, asking others what could be done to support local officers. “A friend messaged me about a nephew who graduated. (She said that) the school held an adopt-a-graduate program and (she told me) how meaningful that was,” reported Esh. The friend, Verna Fisher, asked if something similar could be done for the police, adding that if Esh would organize the program, she would help. Through friends, Esh was able to connect with Lancaster Chief of Police Jarrad Berkihiser. On June 15, Esh received permission to organize Adopt A Cop in order to support 133 Lancaster police department officers. Using a Facebook event See Local Families pg 4

Back-to-school shoppers, treasure seekers, and bargain hunters are invited to visit CommunityAid, one of Lancaster County’s largest thrift stores, located at 31 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster. The 34,000-square-foot store, formerly a Weis Markets, features new and gently used clothing for men, women, and children; toys and games; housewares and knick-knacks; seasonal items; books, DVDs, and CDs; lamps, lighting fixtures, and small appliances; shoes and accessories for the whole family; jewelry; and collectibles. The store is open on Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and closed on Sundays. All proceeds benefit local charities. “Our mission is to fund local churches, charities, and first responders; to provide affordable or free clothing to families in need; and to provide quality, good-paying jobs in the community, said Bob Hauer, marketing director. Those who visit the Lancaster store will find neat rows of clothing sorted by size and gender as well as color. All clothing has been donated by the community. “When our processing team goes through and selects the clothing that goes out (on the sales floor), we try to keep a high standard, said Hauer. “These are items that people want to buy.

We hang them in a way that presents them attractively, but we are really quality-driven overall. It is good-quality stuff. Repeat visits are encouraged, since new items are put on display daily. “We put out on average 3,500 new-view items on our sales floor every single day. People come in looking for a great deal and they find it, said Hauer. “Our tasks are to replace that item on the rack. It’s a wonderful challenge. It does no good for our charities or our shoppers if it stays back in the processing room. It has to get out there. Every effort is made to keep the store clean and well-organized. “‘Thrift’ has different connotations. Some people hear the word ‘thrift’ and think of a small, musty, dingy presentation, Hauer pointed out. “Our hallmark is that we want to be clean and bright and we want to smell good. When you come into our store, you shop and don’t realize it’s a thrift store until you look at the receipt when you check out. CommunityAid - Lancaster is only one of the organization’s thrift store locations. Other stores are in Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, Hanover, York, and Selinsgrove. “We have given away $15.3 million to 700-plus churches, charities, and first responders since 2009, Hauer reported. “We have the largest thrift store on the East Coast in Selinsgrove, a former

department store, which is about 56,000 square feet of retail. You can spend about three hours shopping. That store is massive. The organization offers both full- and part-time employment for local workers at a competitive wage. “We want to make sure that this should be an employment experience that they always deserved, Hauer said. “Many of our team members Jenna Fisher (left) and Maison Mowery have come from a stack books for sale at CommunityAid in minimum wage envi- Lancaster. Stoltzfus Honored By Woodworking Network Keystone Wood Specialties recently announced that Nick Stoltzfus, vice president of operations, has been named as one of the Wood Industry 40 Under 40 award winners for 2020. The annual award, given by Woodworking Network, celebrates the next generation of industry professionals who are making an impact on wood products manufacturing in North America. Those selected are considered by their peers to be innovators, achievers and even disruptors who demonstrate excellence in the categories of productivity, profitability, social good, ingenuity, peer inspiration, product development,

organizational leadership or another area. More than 140 submissions were received and evaluated by a team of six Woodworking Network editors. Harry Urban, Woodworking Network publisher, noted that this year’s honorees were able to keep their companies moving forward during the COVID-19 pandemic, while dedicating themselves to their communities and public causes. “As the vice president of operations for Keystone Wood Specialties, Nick Stoltzfus is helping to forge the future for his family’s nearly 50-year-old business,” said Stoltzfus’ nominator in the nomination letter. Founded in

1972 by Sam Stoltzfus, company president and CEO and Nick’s father, Keystone Wood Specialties manufacturers custom wood components, backed by personalized customer service. The nominator described Nick as “an intelligent, calm and steadfast leader.” The 32-year-old Nick has worked closely with his father to preserve the Lancasterbased company’s “time-honored craftsmanship and work ethic, while incorporating new technologies and product lines that will lay the groundwork for success in the years ahead,” said his nominator. “Nick’s thorough understanding of all aspects of the business

is invaluable to the woodworking industry, most recently evident during the recent COVID-19 crisis,” the nominator added. “His leadership during this challenging time saved jobs and ensured the company remained viable so that the many contractors, remodelers and cabinetmakers that rely on Keystone Wood Specialties’ products could remain viable as well.” His nominator continued, “Nick’s deep appreciation for the hard work that his family and the many long-term employees have put forth in building and growing Keystone Wood Specialties moti- Keystone Wood Specialties vice president of operations Nick vates him to ensure that this Stoltzfus was named to the Wood Industry 40 Under 40 list created by Woodworking Network. legacy continues.”

page, Esh put the word out to family and friends. Within 48 hours, all 133 officers were adopted. About a week later, a volunteer with Adopt A Cop was looking for gift cards to give to the officers. When the volunteer posted on a group page that both Esh and Tina Edgell belong to, Edgell took notice and messaged Esh. With Esh’s guidance, Edgell set up Adopt A Cop programs for East Lampeter Township and West Earl’s finest. All the officers were adopted the same day Edgell asked for volunteer families, June 22. The date was especially important because it was the day after Linda Stoltzfoos disappeared and members of the East Lampeter Police Department began working 12- to 16-hour shifts. Drawing from the adopting families, she was able to arrange nightly meals for the department for the rest of that week. Esh and Edgell both asked families to take certain actions to support officers. “I stress praying for them as the No. 1 thing and then cards of encouragement, said Edgell, noting that often when families make a snack for their officer, they decide to bring enough for all the police department members to enjoy. Gift cards and movie baskets are another way to offer support. Friends of Esh’s have taken it upon themselves to set up similar programs for the East Earl and New Holland departments. Adoptive families are allowed

to share their email address with their officer, but it is up to the officer to initiate contact. Esh said that often families take items to the police station, and she shared the story of a woman who went to a station to drop off a gift card. When she named the officer it was to be given to, the sergeant standing nearby identified himself as that officer. On July 18, Esh took food to the Lancaster station as part of a large support effort held that day, and she had the opportunity to meet the officer she adopted. “He was so thankful, Esh recalled. “He said, ‘I mean it when I say that the words of encouragement mean as much as the gifts,’ she said. Esh cited COVID-19 restrictions

as part of her inspiration for reaching out to local first responders. “Since I was 16, I planned to take cookies to the police officers, she said. “I thought it would be so much fun, and I never did it. During the quarantine, she was stuck at home, so she made cookies and a cheese platter for the officers at the East Lampeter station and the state police barracks on Lincoln Highway. She has more plans to find ways to support the Lancaster officers in the future. Edgell noted that the effort has been uplifting for her during the restrictive phases of the last several months. “This has been the best thing during COVID, she said, adding that some texts and emails she has received from grateful officers have brought her to tears. “I forward them to (the adoptive) families, she said.

Bird-in-Hand opened with local favorite Ryan and Friends presenting a show called “Comedy and Calamity.” “It’s a very familyfriendly show with ventriloquism and comedy,” said Buda Moser, who noted that Ryan and his five puppet friends made their debut on the Bird-in-Hand stage with this presentation. “We were looking for a family option with comedy that would appeal to a variety of audiences,” added Buda Moser. Ryan and friends opened Aug. 8, with shows running through Saturday, Oct. 17. “The GÜT Life,” starring Nathan Garner as Simon Yoder and Monica DePaul as his wife, Eliza, will run from Thursday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Oct. 23. Buda Moser explained that the show focuses on an Amish couple in their mid-40s looking back over 20 years of marriage. The 90-minute show tells stories from their lives growing up on farms and then veering off when Eliza left the Plain community for a time before returning. “There are some interesting stories there,” said Buda Moser, who called the interactive show “heartfelt, heartwarming, and funny.” To learn more about the offerings at the Bird-in-Hand Stage, readers may visit https://bird-in-hand.com/stage or call 800-790-4069. Magic and Wonder is offering free tickets to firefighters, police officers, EMTs, active-duty and retired military personnel, and health care workers through Saturday, Sept. 5. Those taking advantage of the free tickets may call 717-323-3077 and mention the code “Thank You.” Each worker may receive up to six tickets, including tickets for five guests. GOTR Season Announced Girls on the Run (GOTR) is accepting registrations for the upcoming GOTR and Heart and Sole season, which will begin on Monday, Sept. 21. At GOTR, social-emotional learning is the cornerstone of the award-winning, research-based lessons for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR supports girls in identifying and processing their emotions. The GOTR programming seeks to empower girls to nurture their physical and emotional health, find strength in their connectedness, and build confidence and resiliency. Following current COVID-19 guidelines, GOTR-trained coaches and dedicated staff are ready to adapt program delivery as the school year approaches. GOTR has made several modifications to the program to ensure the health and safety of coaches and participants. In the event of unexpected or planned closures, GOTR will shift in-person programming to virtual practices. Coaches will be provided with specific resources, training, and support to prepare them to seamlessly deliver the program virtually. The virtual program will engage and connect socially and emotionally and will provide physical activity as well. As guidelines allow, GOTR will also plan to meet safely in small groups as it connects at alternate sites such as parks, community centers, churches, and schools. Additional modifications that have been made to the GOTR and Heart and Sole program delivery include reduced team size for safer gathering; reduced duration from 10 weeks to eight weeks to accommodate a later start date; flexibility in times and days of practices; a flexible season start date; and modifications to adhere to social distance guidelines and minimize exposure. Each girl will receive her own bag to hold her individual materials for the season. GOTR coaches will receive updated training and additional modules that include social inclusion, COVID-19 safety, and trauma informed coaching. The season culminating 5K will take place mid-November through smaller site-based events and virtually. For more information and to register, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster.org.
