Primary Colors CVHS Marchers Prepare Fall Drill By Ann Mead Ash
When Brandon Nase, Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) marching band director, held band camp at the school from 5 to 9 p.m. on July 30 to Aug. 3 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 6 through 10, he introduced band members to the primary colors in a way they had probably never experienced them before. Nase explained, “The show is called ‘Paint It …’ We are trying to convey emotions associated with certain colors through music. Specifically, those colors are cyan, yellow, (and) magenta, and then when those three come together, they are black.” To present those concepts to audience members, Nase said the show See CVHS Marchers pg 7

The Bible2School program will be offered for Smoketown Elementary School students at New Life Church, 1993 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Students will be bused to New Life Church, where trained volunteers will lead them in worship and Bible stories. the light-hearted event. “This year it is more important than ever that we have a successful event because the needs COBYS meets are growing,” said Fitzkee. “Specifically our foster care and adoption care programs are growing rapidly with (the need for these) partly fueled by the opioid epidemic.” In response to the need, COBYS has See COBYS pg 4
Cyclists line up to begin the 2017 Bike Millersville event. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Sept. 15, beginning at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center at Millersville University. By Ann Mead Ash
Clara Ames, executive director of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), knows a bit about the history of the event now called Bike Millersville. “(The ride) is 19 years running, but it hasn’t always had the same name,” noted
Ames. “It used to be called the Dream Ride.” Ames added that the sponsoring organizations of the event have changed over the past two decades since the ride was first held. Bike Millersville will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, See Bike Millersville pg 5
Cyclists, walkers, and motorcycle enthusiasts are all invited to take part in the COBYS Bike and Hike fundraiser to be held at Lititz Church of the Brethren on Sept. 9. The event will help support the organization’s foster care and family service programs.

SRM from pg 1 The Sudan Rebirth Ministry (SRM) will hold its fifth annual fundraiser, From Lancaster With Love, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Gypsy Kitchen, 555 W. James St., Lancaster, on the campus of Lancaster Theological Seminary. SRM was created to provide support for and empower the people of South Sudan through education. The organization is particularly interested in helping students who have been orphaned because of the civil unrest in the country. The purpose of From Lancaster With Love is to raise money to fund educational scholarships for students from
kindergarten through college to prepare them to be citizens, leaders, and Christians in South Sudan. Sudan Rebirth Ministry was founded by Jacob Guot, the Rev. Kent Kroehler, and others from First United Methodist Church and Lancaster. Guot, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, was one of thousands of boys who escaped a Sudanese civil war by walking more than 1,000 miles across east Africa. Guot grew up in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. He was able to immigrate to the U.S., become a citizen, and earn a GED diploma. A chance meeting with Kroehler, then the minister at First United Methodist Church, eventually led Guot to Lancaster, where he lived for four years and graduated from Lancaster

Bible College. He then moved to Wilmore, Ky., where he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary. Guot has been able to serve his hometown people in Bor, South Sudan, through SRM and a separate nonprofit that is overseeing the purchase of land and the building of a civic and religious center in Bor. Guot recently published his story, “The Lost Boy Is Found, A Lost Boy’s Story of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Love.” To purchase tickets to the fundraiser, readers may visit www.SudanRebirth Ministry.org.

4 - PENNYSAVER - Conestoga Valley Edition - August 22, 2018
COBYS from pg 1 recently purchased a new building, called Murray Hill Center. The organization finalized 31 adoptions in the last year, hitting a milestone in May with 500 adoptions finalized over a 20-year time period. In addition, during the past year, COBYS added 24 new families to provide foster care, bringing the total to 116 families that have been trained and approved to care for children. However, the need is still outpacing resources. The 22nd annual Bike and Hike will be held at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Sunday, Sept. 9. The fundraiser includes a 3-mile walk, 10- and 25-mile bicycle rides, and a 65-mile motorcycle ride dubbed the “Dutch Country Motorcycle Ride.” Those who participate may choose which event they wish to take part in and then donate a registration fee or raise money from sponsors. They may also utilize both strategies to help raise funds. Prizes will be offered to participants who raise specific amounts, and junior and senior high church youth groups that raise $1,500 or more may earn a gym and pizza night. Each event will begin at a different time throughout the afternoon, with the motorcycle registration beginning at 12:45 p.m. and the ride starting at 1:30 p.m. Walk and bicycle ride registration will begin immediately after the motorcycles leave, and the 25-mile bike ride will begin at 2 p.m., followed by the walk and the 10-mile bike ride at 2:30 p.m. Each participant in the event will receive a T-shirt, ice cream as well as refreshments following the walk or ride, and a chance to win one of 100 door prizes, including gift cards to area restaurants and attractions, as well as clothing and merchandise donated by area businesses. For the third year in a row, the event will also include a silent auction, and organizers have gathered more than 50 items ranging in value for bidders. Tickets to local theater productions will be featured, along with artwork by local artists and a patio swing with a canopy. COBYS executive director Mark Cunningham, Fitzkee, and their wives will be competing for bids once again for their auction offering of meals for eight in their homes. Each couple hopes that their meal brings the highest price. The event tied a previous attendance record in 2017, when more than 600 area residents participated. “Last year we had a huge jump in participation by walkers,” said Fitzkee, who noted that more than 300 walkers took part. “We have (people who walk with) dogs, older people, and people pushing strollers,” said Lori Zimmerman, marketing and communications coordinator with COBYS. Individuals who register for the event by Wednesday, Sept. 5, will receive a discount. There is a discounted registration fee for motorcycle passengers. Registration for the Bike and Hike may be completed at www.cobys.org/bike-and-hike. For more information email anne@cobys .org or call 717-656-6580.

Lancaster To Host 9/11 Stair Climb
Bike Millersville from pg 1 Millersville University, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The event will open for packet pickup at 6:30 a.m., and the ride will start at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. The ride will be held rain or shine, but delays may be made in the case of fog or other hazardous conditions. The ride will feature 5-, 20-, and 30mile cycling tours and 1-, 2-, and 6.5-mile walking tours throughout the greater Millersville area. Rest stops featuring fruit, water, and snack foods will be located along the routes. The stops will also offer bike support. “There are a number of area bike shops that have partnered with (volunteers from) each of the nonprofits to sponsor the rest stops, explained Ames. The organizations that have partnered to present this year’s ride include NLAM, which is an organization that offers mobile psychiatric rehabilitation services and facilitates faith-based support groups for the purpose of strengthening individuals and families touched by mental illness, and Faith Friendship Ministries of Mountville, which provides residential care and housing, along with shared independent living situations for local individuals. Another sponsor is New Hope Community Life Ministry, located in Quarryville. The organization promotes healing and abundant life through Jesus Christ. Millersville University and the school’s Cy Fritz Foundation, which supports Millersville University’s cross-country and track and field programs, are also sponsors. There is a minimum fee for cyclists and walkers to register for the ride, but participants may also fundraise for a chosen organization. “A lot of people collect
sponsorships, and they ask for so much per mile, explained Ames. She added that many of those riders then combine routes, so that they can collect a per-mile amount for up to 60 miles. According to Ames, the organization wants to encourage those who cannot be present for the ride to complete it on their own by signing up at www.nlam.org. Ames added that NLAM hopes to raise $15,000 for its general budget from the ride. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries, said that her goal is for 10 area residents to participate with the organization to raise $5,000 for Faith Friendship Ministries, and she added that those who cannot participate themselves may sponsor residents of Faith Friendship who have

“(The 9/11 Stair Climb) gives everybody a chance to pause and remember 343 firefighters who died and what they sacrificed that day, explained Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb committee chair Scott Yuill. “It’s our chance to honor those 343, added committee member Joyce Mokros. The eighth annual Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration for participants will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. with a time of calisthenics. Bagpiper Heidi Tywalk will play “Amazing Grace, and East Petersburg Fire Company (EPFC) chaplain Bob Kauffman will give an invocation. Participants will begin climbing the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs at approximately 9:30 a.m. Moments of silence will be observed at the times the Twin Towers fell. The event will conclude in a new manner this year. The first 343 participants will receive a badge representing a firefighter who died in the World Trade Center collapse on Sept. 11, 2001. An additional group of people may receive badges representing police officers, as sup-
plies are available. As individuals complete the climb, they may ring a bell and announce the name of the person whose badge they carry. Yuill explained that this new procedure is based on the method used in New York City to honor first responders who died in the line of duty. Prior to the introduction of two-way radios on fire trucks, a system of bells was used to communicate the location of fires. At firefighters’ funerals, 20 tones were rung in groups of five. The pattern of 55-5-5 will be sounded at the start of the 9/11 Stair Climb. The bell used for the event previously hung on a fire engine used by the EPFC. The 9/11 Stair Climb is typically attended primarily by first responders, but anyone is welcome. “(This is) a chance for firefighters to remember, since we are involved with the same job they did, Yuill said. “Whenever we go out on a call, we run the risk of not coming back. There is a cost to participate in the 9/11 Stair Climb. Event T-shirts will be included in the registration fee for those who sign up by Friday, Aug. 24. After that date, folks may register at the event, but the availability of shirts will not be guaranteed.

CVHS Marchers from pg 1 will begin with hints of the song “Paint It Black” by the Rolling Stones and segue into an exploration of cyan using the song “Blue Shades” by Frank Ticheli. The yellow section will feature the well-known Elton John tune “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” During the segment on magenta, the band will play “Libertango” by Astor Piazzolla. The piece will conclude with “Paint It Black.” According to Nase, each color will be interpreted in a different way by the marchers in the drill. “Blue can have many meanings,” explained Nase. “We have chosen to look at it as a precise and rhythmic color.” Nase added that the drill for yellow will include flowing arcs and that the black drill will bring the three colors together as a whole for a positive conclusion. In addition, the 2018 drill will have an added feature that will be new to CVHS marchers. “What’s really special and unique for us this year is that we are using props and integrating those into the show, and they will play a major design role,” explained Nase, who added that the props will be boxes that will be painted half black and half one of the other colors represented in the show. During the program, the boxes will be manipulated so that by the end of the show, all that audience members will see will be the black side. The 2018 band has 52 members, including 14 color guard members, who will use rifles and flags in the drill. There will also be opportunities for some of the band members to be in the spotlight. “The opener has some features for each section, especially toward the end, where it layers into those sections,” said Nase,

who added that “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” will feature a trumpet duet that will ultimately involve the entire trumpet section. “Libertango” will feature the percussion section in the beginning. Nase noted that there are changes that will make the drill challenging for band members. “There’s an effort on our part to incorporate more visual components,” he said. “That will make up a degree of the difficulty.” Senior Jasmine Yachasz, who is serving as drum major for the second year in a row, said that she is looking forward to making her final year of band the best it can be. She is pleased with the progress toward learning the drill that was made during band camp. “It seems that the students are catching on really fast,” she said. “We are focused and ready to take on the challenges.” The band will take part in several competitions this fall, including a show at Hempfield High School; the CVHS show on Saturday, Sept. 22; a show at Warwick High School; one at Manheim Central High School; and two shows in York and Berks counties. Band members will travel to the Cavalcade of Bands championship competition in Allentown on Saturday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 11.

Community celebrations will be held in Lancaster to kick off and conclude National Recovery Month, which is observed in September. Both events will be held rain or shine at Buchanan Park, located at the corner of Buchanan and Race avenues, Lancaster. Recovery Rocks, a music festival celebrating recovery from addiction, will start things off on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. Live music will be performed by Rick’s One Man Band, Apes of the State, Bad Luck Charms, and Half Past Dead. Admission, along with games and activities for children, will be free of charge. Food trucks will be on-site selling refreshments. The festival was previously hosted at The 521 Club, which is a sober club located in
Manheim Township, but the club opted to move the event to the park so that more people can attend, said event committee member Matt Supplee. “We wanted it to be more visible and overall accessible to the community,” added committee member Shawn “Kate” McNichol. For more information about Recovery Rocks, readers may contact Supplee at 717940-9993 or matt_supplee@yahoo.com or call James Severson at 717-250-8582. Event updates will also be posted on The 521 Club’s Facebook page. Recovery Day Lancaster 2018 will be held at the park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. The event will feature the Walk for Recovery, in which participants will circumnavigate the approximately 1-mile perimeter of the Franklin & Marshall College campus at 11 a.m. A barbecue lunch will be served for a small fee from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Three bands - Apes of the State, A Day Without Love, and Wallace - will perform beginning at noon. Activities for children and adults, including face painting, balloons, crafts, and a traveling magician, will be offered throughout the day, and the event will
conclude with a Serenity Circle. Scott Theurer, an organizer for Recovery Day Lancaster and a person in recovery, explained that the Walk for Recovery is not a fundraising event. “It’s to raise awareness and show that recovery is real in Lancaster. We want to put a face to addiction,” he said. “We want to show people we do recover and come back to being contributing members of the community.” The theme of National Recovery Month this year is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.” Theurer noted that strong communities are important to reduce the number of people developing addictions and to support those in recovery. “Lancaster County is known for having a vibrant and alive recovery community,” he said. “People move here for it.” Theurer reported that in the last quarter, the number of deaths from overdose in Lancaster County had dropped from the previous quarter, and this quarter looks to continue that trend. “To see the numbers coming down is exciting. Recovery is having an effect,” he said. “Hope is a huge part of recovery. That’s See Festivals pg 9

Financial hardship considerations brought to the Laurel Dance Company board of directors will be confidentially considered. Performers of all ages and training levels, as well as those with no training experience, are invited to audition for the classic holiday ballet, which includes parts ranging from angels, Snowflakes, Dewdrop and Sugar Plum Fairies, and divertissements from the Kingdom of Sweets to the Stahlbaum grandparents and guests in the party scene. There is also a need for male actors who move well and for male performers capable of lifting for partner dances. Male roles include Herr Drosselmeyer, Herr Stahlbaum, Grandfather Stahlbaum, and the Butler, as well as dancers in several other scenes. Boys are needed for the parts of Fritz, friends, rats/mice, and soldiers. Female dancers on pointe are needed throughout “The Nutcracker” and should bring their pointe shoes to the audition. The audition will include a ballet warm-up, technique demonstrations, and a short choreography/direction-following exercises. For more information, readers may contact Robin Antkowiak, president of the board of directors and production manager, at laureldancecompany@yahoo.com.

Celtic duo The Launies will play at Emmaus Road CafÊ, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m. London Irishman Jamie O’Brien performs songs from his eclectic repertoire, featuring many from Ireland and from Hawaii. Before moving to Arizona in 2006, he lived in Pennsylvania for almost 20 years, and he currently performs regularly throughout the Mid-Atlantic states, the Southwest and Hawaii and tours frequently in Canada and Europe. O’Brien’s performances include songs he learned from parents, grandparents and other relatives at family gatherings known as hooleys, along with others he picked up from fellow Irish musicians on his journey through Europe and across the Atlantic to the U.S. He also plays music he learned from musicians in Hawaii. O’Brien sings and plays the guitar and ukulele. He is joined by long-time collaborator Henry Koretzky on vocals, mandolin and mandocello. Koretzky, from Harrisburg, performs an eclectic mix, including bluegrass, swing, and country. He sings and plays the mandolin, mandocello and guitar as a solo performer, accompanist and band member. In addition to the Launies, he performs with Sink or Swing, the Harrisburg Mandolin Orchestra and other groups. Admission to the event is free. Coffee beverages, Italian sodas, and baked goods will be offered for purchase. For more details, readers may contact 717-478-3672 or emmausroadcafe@gmail.com.
