CVHS Band Practices Fall Drill This year, the drill has taken a the American division on Saturday more serious turn as the 42 band and Sunday, Nov. 13 and 14. Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions, sees the goals of the RTCM in space mission terms. “Restart is the rocket booster that helps (students) get into the orbit of sobriety and recovery,” said Santiago. Once students are orbiting among the stars, Santiago said, they are sustained by connecting to a local church where they can continue to grow spiritually. “We help them blast off, but they have to utilize the resources in the community,” said Santiago. So, for RTCM’s sixth annual fall banquet, it is only fitting that the organization is featuring Josh McDowell, author of “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” along with about 150 other books, and a star of the Christian publishing See RTCM pg 7
song reflecting on water, and the third celebrating fire. “‘Earth’ is our opener,” said Nase. “‘Water’ is our ballad, which is nice because you have those fluid, curved forms (in the drill).” “Water” will be followed by a percussion break, and the closer, which will focus on fire, will be performed with intensity. Welch will conduct the first two songs into the percussion break, when

Kevin Bedgood will return to Mulberry Art Studios in September to display “Dreams,” his latest collection of sculpted wood art. A First Friday reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 3, and the exhibit will run until Thursday, Sept. 30. “Dreams” is about the future. This show is an exploration of design and relationship concepts, seeking new directions of artistic expression. Bedgood has been experimenting with new tools and processes as well as playing with negative space and how it relates to the shapes around it. He works with new shapes and with ideas and studies the visual impact made by his pieces. Often his pieces will involve turning multiple pieces of wood and then segmenting them and reassembling the pieces. Bedgood has been working with wood since childhood, and the last 25 years have been an exploration of the boundaries of woodturning. The primary tool for his sculpting is a wood lathe. He is also a teacher and demonstrator and has traveled throughout the U.S. and as far away

CHICKEN BBQ musicality is challenging,” she said. “Getting the music to sing and capture the element we are trying to portray (is difficult).” Although Weder agreed that mastering the music can be a challenge, he added that the band membership includes a number of first-timers, who are not familiar with the rigors of marching band. Nase agreed, saying that uniformity is always a goal, but added “We have a younger group this year that is doing a great job.” To keep spirits up as students practiced in the summer heat, band camp Olympics were held each day. Activities included guard pole javelin and an attention game where students had to remain still without blinking or smiling. Students were also divided into teams and asked to perform an original skit on the last day of camp.

Weder will take over and conduct the finish. Original music for the show was purchased from Standing O Marching. Nase noted that the show will begin with a trio - a flute, a trumpet, and a mellophone playing - and that a flute solo will be featured during “Water.” Guard members using 6-foot flags, swing flags, rifles, and sabers will also have solos at various points in the show. “The drill is designed to fit the music,” said Nase, who noted that the band members begin seemingly scattered on the field and performing choreographed moves. As the music flows into “Water,” curved shapes will be created by the marchers. Weder noted that spiral shapes reminiscent of swirling water will be followed by block type forms as the music moves toward the impact of “Fire.” Welch noted that the ballad offers some level of difficulty. “The

Josh McDowell
world. “We reached out to Josh, and he agreed,” said Santiago. “The Lord brought Josh to us.” The event will be held at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. Call of Grace Band will provide special music for the event, and a freewill offering to benefit the ministry will be received. For McDowell, who has spoken in more than 100 countries, responding positively to RTCM’s request simply
lined up with the goals of his nearly 60 years of ministry. “Restart’s mission is where my heart is with young people,” said McDowell, who noted that many of the problems of life begin during youth. “If I am going to have a lasting impact, I have to start with young people,” he said, adding that building confidence and positive relationships can prepare young people to deal with issues they may face later. McDowell noted that developing an honest self-image is especially important. “How you see yourself
will determine most relationships,” he explained. “If you cannot accept yourself as you are with your blemishes and your positive points, you cannot trust somebody else to accept you. As a result, you don’t establish close relationships.” Conversely, McDowell added, if we can see ourselves as God sees us, we can trust others to as well. Recalling his passion to write “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” considered a highly influential Christian book, McDowell, shared that he was inspired by his

student peers. “When I went off to college, I was bitter, hurt, mad, ticked off,” said McDowell, who noticed a group of students who seemed to have a genuine love and care for those around them. “That got my attention,” said McDowell, who asked the students what their secret was. A young woman told him, “Jesus Christ.” McDowell did not want to hear about Jesus. “They challenged me
until they ticked me off,” he said. “I set out to write ‘Evidence That Demands a Verdict’ against Christianity, but I ended up spending 13 years documenting why I thought it was true, and that brought me to where I am today.” Seating at the banquet will be limited.
