“I met a bunch of amazing people along the way.” “This is my way of saying thank you to Fairmount,” Nolt pointed out, adding that he specifically remembered what it was like to live there when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place. “I know what it was like being on the inside looking out,” he said. “It’s not fun.” Nolt hoped the parade was an enjoyable experience for residents who had lived through thoseLocalrestrictions.firecompanies that took part, in addition to Bowmansville, which brought a tanker and a rescue vehicle, were Farmersville Fire Company, which brought an engine and an ambulance, and Fivepointville Fire Company, which brought a Fairmounttanker.is a nonprofit retirement community offering a variety of services, including living options, skilled nursing, and short-term and outpatient rehabilitation. I t was nearly 90 degrees in Ephrata on Aug. 20, but at least 100 Fairmount residents and dozens of members of the surrounding community waited patiently for a number of fire trucks and rescue vehicles to arrive and hold a parade around the campus at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. At 1:30 p.m., the sirens could be heard as the emergency vehicles came up the hill and paraded first around the Farm Crest campus. They then proceeded to Wheat Ridge, where the trucks parked along the scenic ridge on the south side of the campus. First responders exited the trucks, pulled out equipment, and prepared to meet with those who had gathered. Fire safety packets were given to the children present.Luke Nolt, who arrived on the Bowmansville Fire Company truck, organized the event. “A few years ago, I was a resident (at Fairmount) after a serious motorcycle accident,” explained Nolt, who spent nearly a year recovering and undergoing therapy at the rehabilitation center. “Now I am doing better than I could ever imagine, and it’s thanks to Fairmount and their great people,” he continued.

When Wally Calderon, director of the Servant Stage production of “Ragtime,” first saw the production in 1999, he knew he wanted to direct it. Now, as the cast of about 50 rehearses, he looks forward to bringing the musical to the local stage. “The challenges of ‘Ragtime’ are in its strong content,” said Calderon, who quickly added, “(The show) leaves you with hope for a future where there can be harmony and unity.”

In 1973, Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, held its first chicken barbecue, an event that would come to be known as Fellowship Days, which now includes a benefit auction, food, presentations, yard and craft sales, a talent show, a parade, and children’s activities. The event now benefits the Caring Fund, which was created in 1983 to help Landis Homes residents who had exhausted their financial resources.

Servant Stage will present “Ragtime” at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on three consecutive weekends, Fridays through Sundays from Sept. 16 to Oct. 2. Shows will be at 7 p.m. on Fridays, 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
The musical follows three groups of people who are in New York state when the story begins in 1902. Coalhouse, a musician played by Josh Green, and Sarah, played by Kylie Jo Smith, are from Harlem. Tateh, a silhouette artist, played by Andrew Zahn, and his Little Girl, played by Kate Zahn and Lauren Watts, have recently arrived from Latvia. The third group is a wealthy New Rochelle family that has made money in fireworks. The family members are known only as Mother, played by Sarah Zahn; Father, played by David Diehl; Little Boy, played by Luke Stone and Julian Ford; and Mother’s sibling, Younger Brother, played by TylerCalderonHoover.noted that the story focuses on a specific moment in time and what lies ahead. “It follows these groups on their journeys when they are starting to intermingle,” said Calderon. “It’s a story about the last moments when these groups were so separate and so foreign to one another. It comes with a lot of sensitive issues, and the biggest challenge is communicating to the audience that it’s not something that only happened 120 yearsCalderonago.” called “Ragtime” “colorful,” noting that the show is mostly sung and includes historical figures such as Harry Houdini, vaudeville entertainer Evelyn Nesbit, and J.P. Morgan. “These characters are woven through the story to tell us these things actually occurred,” he said, pointing out that the Henry Ford character sings a song about conveyor belts that discusses how mass production has begun to speed up manufacturing. Even the ragtime music itself would soon be sped up into jazz. The cast includes several children, and Calderon noted that this is intentional. “(The) children are sort of a representation of the new century in the things they say and the way they act,” he said. Although the groups represent different peoples and experiences, Calderon emphasized what they have in common. “All the parents relate to Tateh and his Little Girl and his fear of losing her, and they find themselves relating to Mother, who is feeling a pull to become something (more),” he said. “In the final picture, it shows members of each of those groups together and hopeful.”Performances are paywhat-you-will, and donations are welcome. Elvin Stoltzfus worked on a number of pieces that will be go up for bids. Stoltzfus was tapped to refurbish a Benjamin Brubaker dollhouse with parquet floors made up of 7,000 individual pieces. Stoltzfus had the skills to work on the house because he began working on segmented bowls and other wooden items in 2015. He is contributing several of his works to the auction. “I cut all these pieces out, and they have to be glued together in layers and put on the lathe,” Stoltzfus explained. “I was fascinated with this (process), and I started turning (pieces) out.”
A tent will be erected in front of the Crossings area of the campus, and on Wednesday, Sept. 7, a by-donation pancake breakfast will be served from 8 to 10 a.m. Later that day, an ice cream social and a hymn sing will be held. Friends of the Woods and Wetlands will give a presentation at 6 p.m., which will be repeated at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8. On Friday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m., a parade featuring the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will be held. The live music that evening will be based on a Liederkrantz theme with songs in German and English. On Saturday, Sept. 10, yard sales and a craft sale will be held, and food items will be sold. Children’s activities will be held, and quilts will go over the block at a live auction from 1 to 2:30 p.m. From 5 to 8 p.m., the Brass Pocket Band will play and there will be a 50th anniversary celebration with cupcakes. frompg 1
Three years ago, organizers began spreading the festivities out over several days. An online auction of items will begin on Sunday, Sept. 4, and end at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. The auction may be accessed by visiting www.landishomes.org and clicking on “Fellowship Days.”
Landis Homes residents have used their talents to create items to be auctioned. Jackie Myers has made several quilt tops. Standing near an orange, blue, and white Wentworth pattern quilt and one with an abstract pattern of Canada geese she completed, Myers told of how she and her family received help in the form of quilts at their home in Belgium following World War II. As a child of 6, she found herself wanting to learn quilting. She came to America in 1961, but she did not learn quilting until she retired. “I started to make them to give back from what we had gotten,” said Myers. Wes Newswanger taught industrial arts at Lancaster Mennonite High School. When he came to Landis Homes, he put his talents to work building benches and coffee tables using live-edge cherry wood. “I would call it a bucket bench or a porch bench,” said Newswanger of one piece he made. A coffee table he calls River of Glass, which features two pieces of live edge cherry held together by metal and covered with glass, will also be auctioned.

“The Covenanters were different in that they brought their pastors directly from Scotland and played a huge role in the Revolutionary War,” said former Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation president Barry Girvin. “They derived their name from the many covenants that were broken by the British to make Presbyterianism the state religion. They came to America fleeing persecution and opposing the monarchy, so it was logical that they would become involved with the revolution.” Girvin curates the school room museum, which is attached to the old church. The museum houses a collection of church materials and artifacts from the early days of the church, as well as a plethora of old documents and photographs from the many one-room schools that used to dot the landscape. Festival attendees will be able to tour the old church and museum, as well as access archived information and research their genealogy. “People who have relatives or ancestors that attended one of the old schools in the area can look up old pictures and information,” said Girvin. “Anyone is Forwelcome.”moreinformation or to purchase tickets, festival.com.www.covenanterscottishvisit
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic (inherited) condition – it is passed from parents to their children through their genes. Alpha-1 may result in serious lung disease in adults and/or liver disease at any age. For each trait a person inherits, there are usually two genes; one gene comes from each parent. People with Alpha-1 have received two abnormal alpha-1 antitrypsin genes. One of these abnormal genes came from their mother and one from their father. Alpha-1 is a rare disease that is even more rarely diagnosed, with over 90% of patients thought to be undiagnosed. Alpha-1 is the #1 known genetic risk factor for COPD and may be a contributing cause for up to 3% of COPD cases in the United States. Alpha -1 testing is recommended by ATS, CHEST, COPD foundation, WHO and GOLD.
Attendees of the festival will have an opportunity to experience games and activities such as the “caber toss”, Scottish dancing and a bagpiping contest, where bagpipers perform before a panel of judges and have a chance to earn medals. The event will also feature a traditional haggis ceremony; information will be provided on the unique dish as it is served with Scotch whiskey. Before the end of the festival, a re-enactment of the Octorara Declaration of 1743 will occur, in which participants portray the day that Covenanters first gathered to deem King George II an unfit and ungodly ruler and take up arms. Each year, multiple descendants of Scottish clans attend the festival and set up stands to hand out information on their background and sell handmade goods. Vendors will offer both Scottish and American cuisine for purchase. The church, which is the known as the oldest Covenanter church in North America, first began hosting the festival nine years ago as a means to raise money for the maintenance and restoration for the historic property. Proceeds benefit the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation and various projects such as reworking old, hazardous wiring in the building and restoring the church to its state in 1880.

A crowd of construction partners, Landis Quality Living board members, donors and newly signed tenants recently enjoyed a morning at Landis Place to participate in a topping-out gathering. Topping out is a builders’ tradition that celebrates a milestone during a construction project.High Construction project superintendent Jim Kline noted the tradition goes back as far as the 700s, when builders in Scandinavian regions would place a sheath of grain on top of the building for good Duringluck.the ceremony held on Aug. 2, all those in attendance signed a steel beam that was then lifted by a construction crane and set in place in the northwest corner of the building, becoming the first of the roof beams to be set. A prayer of thanks and gratitude was offered by the Rev. Elizabeth Soto. The building will contain apartments aimed at the middle market as well as for those with less than the area median income. Landis Quality Living is in the process of raising at least $550,000 to bring down the amount needing to be financed, making it possible for at least eight of the apartments to be available at lower-cost rents. If more funds are raised, the number of low-cost apartments will increase. When finished, Landis Place on King will bring 79 apartments and groundfloor retail space to 239 W. King St., Lancaser. The opening is set for March of 2023 and already has renters for about 30% of the apartments, even without having a model to show. For more information on Landis Place on King, visit www.landisplace.org. hosted take place on Sept. at Church signature of the gathering conwith this year’s festivities a bigger Incredible Ice Cream Celebration.

Earlier this year, the Friendship Heart Studio was offered an opportunity to create a mural on the side of Rachel’s Café and Creperie. Located at 201 W. Walnut St., Lancaster, this bright yellow building will now be the home of the studio’s second mural project. Beginning in September, Friendship Heart Artists and local partnered artists will begin a “Springtime in Paris” inspired design created by seven Heart Artists. Second, attendees at the 2021 picnic painted bricks that became part of a colorful walkway leading to an outdoor altar located in a grove on the east side of the church. Some of the bricks were painted elaborately, and some used a more simple design. Themes ranged from paintings of saints to crosses, rainbows, outdoor scenes, and stained glass. Although most were painted at the picnic, some were finished after. In 2021, Our Lady of Lourdes parish in New Holland rented a tent and held a welcome back picnic at the church for the purpose of gathering together after many months of adhering to COVID-19 restrictions. This year, the event has become a tradition.“Lastyear we rented a huge tent and filled it with people,” said Amy Spina, one of the organizers of the event. “It’s for the parish, but everyone is invited.” Last year, nearly 200 parishioners attended the picnic. This year, everyone is invited to the backyard behind the church, 150 Water St., New Holland, for a parish potluck picnic on Sunday, Sept. 11. Religious education classes for the fall semester will begin that day at 9 a.m., followed by family Mass at 10:30 a.m. and the picnic, which will last until 3 p.m. Food will be served inside. According to organizer Colleen Greer, the church will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, and beverages, and the rest of the food will be potluck. “Everyone brings something,” said Greer, who noted that in 2021, food items brought by attendees ranged from empanadas to pizza. Cotton candy will be available as well. Those who plan to attend are asked to sign up at edvestibule.locatedmentationitblessingsbestowedandwillball.thatandwithgamesparachutepick-a-rubber-duckwillcialoutgiveFireplebeensupplies,”we10Sept.oflourdesNH.comhttp://ourladybySunday,4.“Justsowedon’tgetofthesame(dish)andsoknowwhatweneedforexplainedGreer.Avarietyofactivitieshaveplannedtodelightpeo-ofallages.GardenSpotRescuewillbeon-sitetobucketridesandhelpwithacandydrop.Spe-gamesandrelayracesalsobeheld,includingagame,games,guessinginvolvingjarsfilledcandy,bingo,cornhole,agamecalledcrossnetisplayedwithavolley-“WewillhaveaDJwhokeepthecrowdlaughingentertained,”saidSpina.Lastyear’spicnicgatheringsomepermanentonthechurch.First,coincidedwiththeimple-oftheprayertreeinthechurchAttendeesareinvit-towriteaprayerrequest on a leaf and hang it on the tree. “Every Mass we say a prayer for the intentions on the prayer leaves,” said Greer, who noted the leaves are changed seasonally. Green leaves adorn the tree in summer, orange in fall, snowflakes in winter, and dogwood blossoms in spring.

“It’s a testimony night,” said Linda Ingham, Life Awakening executive director. “We are doing something different.”Ratherthan featuring a speaker, Life Awakening’s 14th annual fundraiser will include several testimonies from those whose lives have been changed by The Gospel Process, which Ingham has described as “a way to take people into freedom, healing, and victory, beyond salvation and into abundant life.” The event will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Springside Barn, 1294 Weaverland Road, East Earl, beginning with a fruit and dessert bar, including gluten-free options, at 6:30 p.m. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Ingham and teacher and trainer Andrea Holder will speak about Life Awakening Academy (LA Academy), which premiered in August. LA Academy teaches The Gospel Process by dividing the program into four phases. Phase one, which will consist of four weeks of evening classes, will focus on the basics of breaking the power of sin. Phase two, a six-week Bible study, will examine God’s plan for life in union with Christ. Phase three, which will take place on a single Saturday morning, will pinpoint God’s plan for His children, and the final phase will be an eight-hour seminar to explore the facilitator’s role. The evening will also feature encouragement from members of The Kingdom Seekers Bible Study, a group of English and Plain community women formed by Ingham in 2006. The group has studied several books of the New Testament based on lessons written by Ingham. There is no cost to attend the event, but reservations are necessary. Those wishing to attend are asked to email chelsea@lifeawakening07.org or call 717-354-2888 by Monday, Sept. 12. A freewill offering will be received.
