New Location, Same Cause Fairmount Barbecue Moves To New Covenant BY ANN MEAD ASH
uring 2020, Fairmount streamlined its annual Sharing Fund benefit by holding chicken barbecue sales off site and moving the annual auction online. For 2021, many of the activities associated with the event will return, but the fundraiser will not be held at Fairmount. Instead, New Covenant Mennonite Church, 529 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland, will host the 32nd annual benefit auction and barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 11. The fun will kick off at 6:30 a.m. with a country breakfast and flea market. Registration for the auction, which will be held live and webcast so that bids may be made in real time, will begin at 8 a.m. Chicken barbecue meals will go on sale at 10 a.m. “We will have all the food and children’s activities,” said Peter Passage, stewardship director with Fairmount. A helicopter candy

drop is planned for 10 a.m. if weather permits. Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator, noted that bidding will start on Saturday, Sept. 4, through a link at www.FairmountHomes.org, where auction items may be viewed. This year’s live auction will begin at 9 a.m., with a variety of items, including theme baskets, indoor and outdoor furniture, and plants. Two items of special interest are a Ford 4000 tractor and a miniature patchwork sampler, comprised of 337 pieces, made by Rebecca Gregory-Smith, granddaughter of Fairmount resident Laura Zimmerman. The tiny hand-stitched quilt is the most recent in a line of donations from Gregory-Smith dating back more than 15 years. A Burkholder trailer and four 10-minute helicopter rides will also go up for bids. A silent auction, which will open at 9 a.m., will feature gift cards and Dining for Dollars meals provided See Fairmount pg 5

Guild Event To Celebrate Getting Back To Nature Herb Festival Moves To Millersville
BY ANN MEAD ASH
It was John Bryant, chief executive officer of Christ’s Home, a ministry to provide care to children in several counties that dates back to 1903, who had the idea of asking Rep. Bryan Cutler, recently re-elected speaker of the house for the Pennsylvania General Assembly, to speak at the organization’s 2021 Legacy Dinner. “(Cutler) is very well respected (by his colleagues),” said See Christ’s Home pg 6

The Herb Festival has been a traditional event for the Conestoga Herb Guild for a number of years. The organization, which has been meeting for about 40 years, did not hold the Herb Festival in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year the event is back with a new location. The festival has been previously held in Leola and at Boettcher House in Manheim Township.

“Milestones give us a chance to pause and reflect on the work that we’ve done and all the services we have been able to provide,” noted Anne Stokes, director of development, with COBYS Family Services. COBYS works to educate, support, and empower children and adults to reach their full potential by providing a range of foster care, adoption, permanency,
family life education, and counseling services to children and families at risk throughout the region. The organization, with offices at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, celebrated 40 years of serving the Lancaster County area in 2020. The annual fundraising Bike & Hike, planned for Sunday, Sept. 12, at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, will be the 25th for the organization. Stokes estimat-
ed that over the years the signature fundraiser has been held, more than $1.8 million has been raised. Over the 40 years that COBYS has existed, more than 61,000 lives including children and their family members - have been touched by the organization. This year, motorcyclists, who will traverse a 65-mile route through eastern Lancaster County, will register at the church at 12:30 p.m., and the ride will begin at 1:30 p.m. Bicyclists, who will travel one of two routes, will register at 1:30 p.m. The 25-mile route riders will leave at 2 p.m., and those riding 10 miles will leave at 2:30 p.m. Walkers will register at 1:30 p.m. and step off on a 3-mile route through Lititz at 2:30 p.m. A virtual Bike & Hike will be offered this year for those who wish to complete the trek on their
own. Stokes noted that this option is not only for individuals who are not comfortable meeting in a large group. “If folks just can’t make it Sept. 12, we want folks who are able to support COBYS in ways that work for them,” she said. In observance of the 25th year of Bike & Hike, COBYS has created Kickstart, a special effort to raise $25,000 prior to the Sept. 12 event. Stokes noted that more than $6,500 of the $25,000 goal had been raised by mid-August. She See COBYS pg 4

Bryant. “We have asked him to speak about what it’s like to be a person in a position of civil leadership who is a Christian.” The Legacy Dinner will be held at Christ’s Home Community Center, 800 York Road, Warminster, on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m. This year’s theme is “What Does It Mean to Be ‘Salt & Light’?” Tickets may be purchased at https://christs home.givecloud.co/legacy -dinner-2021 or by calling 215-956-2260 or emailing info@christshome.org. Cutler has an interest in the mission of Christ’s Home and a personal concern for children, having lost both parents to ALS while still in high school. The community where Cutler lived in Peach Bottom played a significant role at that crucial time. “The community wrapped their arms around his family,” said Vernon Wright, chief development officer with Christ’s Home. “That was a driver for (Cutler) to serve the community.” Cutler eventually pursued a law degree specializing in health care. More than 15 years ago, he ran for the legislature.

Christ’s Home from pg 1
Christ’s Home was founded in Philadelphia by Dr. Albert Oetinger; his wife, Catharine; and Katharina Krausslach. The Lancaster County campus was donated to the organization by Charles F. Leader in 1935. Leader and his wife, Cora, purchased the house in the late 1920s, and Leader donated the house and grounds to Christ’s Home in memory of his wife following her death. Leader also left funds to Christ’s Home. Within a year of the organization’s receiving the bequest, 12 preschool children were living at the house. According to Wright, the home initially helped struggling parents dealing with issues of poverty, but children without parents came to the home as well. “In our first 35 years, it was all preschool kids, but in the 1970s, we started sending children to Pequea Valley schools,” said Wright. Caregivers, often single women called matrons, lived in the cottages. Married couples with their own children also provided care. “It wasn’t shift work. It was a familystyle approach,” noted Wright. Wright noted that by the end of the 1990s, the organization had begun to work with Bucks, Montgomery, and Lancaster counties to provide services to the children and youth agencies through contacts. “It was a blended model initially because we didn’t push out the private placements,” said Wright. Most children remain at the home less than 18 months. Less than five years ago, a program for teenage mothers opened in Paradise. The Teen/Mother/Baby program supports girls who have made a parenting plan and helps teach them parenting skills. Bryant explained that only about $0.75 of every $1 of care Christ’s Home provides is reimbursed by contracts so it is necessary for the organization to hold fundraisers like the banquet to cover the gap.

Recovery Day Lancaster, an annual family-friendly festival that celebrates recovery from addiction, will return this year with an expanded roster of events, along with several pandemic precautions. After offering an online celebration in 2020, organizers have planned an in-person event for Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Buchanan Park, Race and Buchanan avenues, Lancaster. Returning activities will include the Walk for Recovery, children’s games and crafts, music, holistic health demonstrations, speakers, and a large unity circle. New features will include the inaugural 5K Run for Recovery, free books for adults and children, and the involvement of Lancaster County’s special courts for veterans, drug-related cases, and mental health treatment. Box barbecue meals will be available from Hess’s Barbecue, and Upohar World Cuisine will provide a vegan lunch option. Meals may be reserved in advance at https://recovery-day-lancaster .ticketleap.com/lunch-tix/ or purchased at the door. Attendees may bring their own picnic lunch and lawn games. The Lancaster County Recovery Alliance (LCRA) organizes the event in cooperation with the 521 Club, a sober club, which arranges the day’s “Recovery Rocks!” concert. Other musical performers at the event will be Half Past Dead, a Grateful Dead tribute band, and Octavia Blues Band. The event will begin with

“The day itself is a totally free event, and we do it to encourage community participation and help people renew old acquaintances. It’s almost like a reunion,” said Terry Marxen, one of the organizers of Rothsville Community Day, who noted that this year the opportunity to see friends and neighbors is more important than ever. The 2020 Rothsville Day event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. The 19th Rothsville Community Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, at Forney Field on Church Street in Rothsville. This year’s 5K Fun Run/Walk sponsored by WellSpan Family and Pedi-
atric Medicine, Rothsville, will begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration at Forney Field on the day of the event will open at 9 a.m. The 5K raises funds for WellSpan’s Prescription for Caring to help people who cannot afford necessary medications. Registration for free events and activities will begin at 9:30 a.m. Children’s activities, including barrel train rides, are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. A helicopter candy drop, which is open to children age 12 and under, will take place at 10:45 a.m. Other Rothsville Community Day activities will include an egg toss and a pie-eating contest. Participants will be split into two age groups: children and adults. Door
prizes from local businesses will be given away throughout the day. For 2021, two featured live performers will entertain, including Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary and the DKers, also known as Darren Horst and Kevin McCulley, comedic jugglers who grew from school chums to well-known performers. The Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reptile rescue and education. Founder and herpetologist Rothacker gives fun and educational presentations involving a variety of reptiles from both the local area and around the world. The DKers are Christian jugglers who have been throwing things aloft and catching them since they were in seventh grade at Hinkletown Mennonite School. Pairing juggling feats with clean humor, the duo has performed at banquets, talent shows, and various community and church events. In conjunction with the event, nature trails at Millport Conservancy, 737 E. Millport Road, Lititz, will be open from dawn until dusk. Rothsville Community Day is sponsored by area churches, including Jerusalem Lutheran, and Salem United Methodist, St. Paul’s E.C., and Millport Mennonite Church, in conjunction with Rothsville Fire Company and the Rothsville Ambulance Association, along with support from many local businesses. Readers who would like to learn more may search Facebook for “Rothsville Community Day.”
