Herb Guild Schedules Annual Fest By Ann Mead Ash
Last year, the Conestoga Herb Guild moved its annual Herb Fest from Boettcher House in Landis Woods to Leola. Following a successful event in 2018, president Deidre Remollino and her fellow organizers thought it would be a good idea to change things up a bit again this year. “What is new this year is two speakers,” said Remollino, who will speak on the healing benefits of herbs. Jacqueline Bilder will speak on the subject of “Dillightful Herbal Hacks.” Remollino will speak at 10 a.m. and Bilder will speak at noon when the 2019 Herb Fest is held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The War Memorial Building may be
found along Route 23 about 6 miles north of Route 30. The theme for this year’s fest will be “Embrace Nature.” Organizers of the fest celebrate all things herbal with displays and demonstrations, including a makeand-take presentation on how to make a rosemary topiary. As in the past, there will be a Christmas Corner, a Children’s Corner, and a Second-Hand Rose table featuring gently used items. Basket making demonstrations will be held as well. “ T h e r e ’ s a l i t t l e s o m e t h i n g fo r everyone,” noted Remollino. Additional displays will include fresh herbs, succulents, wreaths, bath products, dried herbs, and cat and dog treats. Herbal aromatherapy products, fresh and dried bouquets, potted plants and potted herbs, and herbal vinegars will also be included. See Herb Guild pg 2
Representatives of the Conestoga Herb Guild who are preparing for the organization’s annual Herb Fest on Sept. 14 at the War Memorial Building in Leola include (from left) Marie Walton, Barbara Zook, Phoebe Oellig, guild president Deidre Remollino, and Grace Remollino.
Cavod To Stage Pirate Musical 30th Benefit Auction And Chicken Barbecue Planned By Ann Mead Ash
Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, cannot keep his enthusiasm about the group’s fall show from bubbling over. “‘The Pirates of Penzance’ is such a fun show. It’s hilarious,” gushed Huyard. “Audiences walk away having really enjoyed it (because it’s) such a crowd favorite.” “The Pirates of Penzance” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29. First produced in 1879, the maritime musical by Gilbert and Sullivan is an energetic work focused on Frederic, played by Nolen Petosky, a young man who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate rather than See Cavod pg 6
By Ann Mead Ash
Caleb Zimmerman will play a pirate when Cavod Theatre presents “The Pirates of Penzance” on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29.
To add something extra to the 30th Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue to be held at Fairmount, organizers will auction a limited-edition, specially designed commemorative mug. Only one dozen sunfire red Sunset Hill Stoneware mugs, known as “The Potbelly,” will be available to savvy bidders during the 2019 event. While the mugs will be special for this year, plenty of traditional foods, activities, and items, such as quilts, will be included in the event, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata. Fairmount permanently moved the barbecue and auction to Farm Crest last year See Benefit Auction pg 15
Gathering auction items for the Fairmount 30th Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue are (from left) Peter Passage, Carol Swailes, and Kent Richard. This year’s auction, which will benefit the retirement community’s Sharing Fund, will be held on Sept. 14. In addition to the auction, the day will feature food, children’s activities, and a flea market.

Herb Guild from pg 1 The Herb Fest always seeks to educate attendees about the herb of the year. This year, the herb is anise hyssop. In addition to an educational display board, organizers plan to have tea samples made from anise hyssop. Other food items will include a variety of herbal beverage samples and fresh baked goods. Jellies
and jams will also be available for purchase. This year, the first 100 visitors will each receive a bag of free gifts, including seeds, pens, candy, and door prize tickets. Door prizes will be given away hourly. Other prizes and giveaways will include two herbalthemed gift baskets. The guild uses the funds raised by the event to purchase books on the subject of herbs to donate to local libraries, to engage educational guest
speakers, and to aid local nonprofit organizations. The group, which has been in existence for nearly 40 years, meets on the second Wednesday of the month 10 months of the year at 6:30 p.m. at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association building. “We support the war memorial by having our monthly meetings and our Herb Fest here,” stated Remollino. “We want to bring more attention to the building and the
wonderful veterans who risked their lives for all of us.” Club membership is limited. Readers who are interested in learning about guild membership may call Susan Atkins at 717-725-7451. Parking at the War Memorial Building is free, and there is no charge to attend the Herb Fest. Readers who have questions about the guild or Herb Fest 2019 may search for “Conestoga Herb Guild” on Facebook.

“It’s a dog festival, (but) humans are (allowed) to attend,” said Joanne Pursel, who chairs Paws in the Park along with Sandy Jones. “It’s a fun time for everybody.” Paws in the Park, which raises funds for Leo’s Helping Paws, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registered dogs of all breeds and sizes will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of contests. Organizers hope to hold the popular canine costume contest, which has brought dogs to the event in costumes both homemade and storebought. Other games and contests organizers hope to hold will include musical hoops, a dog treat relay, a shell game, a tennis ball retrieval competition, and dog limbo. Paw painting will be available for an additional fee. The Lancaster City Police K-9 Unit is expected to return for a demonstration during the event, and at least 12 rescue groups will be in attendance with dogs for people to meet and consider for adoption at a later time.
In addition, a vendor fair will be held. The vendor fair will feature a pet photographer, several vet offices, dog day care and boarding facilities, and on-site nail trims for a cost. One vendor will sell clothing for dogs, and another will sell dog treats. A silent auction will feature up to 25 items, including gift cards and gift baskets. Food trucks that will be on-site at the park will offer hamburgers, chicken fingers, hot dogs, and beef jerky for purchase. A cupcake truck will be on-site as well. According to Pursel, more than 500 people attended the 2018 event. She added that the event welcomes well-mannered dogs on non-retractable leashes no longer than six feet. Vaccination certifications should be brought along with the dog. Leo’s Helping Paws was founded by Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter, who set a specific goal when they created the organization: to provide grants to rescue groups. To be eligible for grants, rescue organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with no paid staff. In addition to helping rescues, Leo’s has a pet food and supply bank that

Professor Harold Hill. The beloved musical has been a favorite of Servant Stage executive director Johnathan Bauer’s since he was a child, and he is thrilled to make a return to the stage with this iconic role. “It’s the first show I ever saw and really was the spark that ignited my love for musicals,” Bauer remarked. “It’s the perfect American musical, with such fun characters, a lively story, and one showstopping song after another.” Although it has been several years since Bauer was on stage, he started his theater career as a performer, and he has appeared on many of the theater stages in Lancaster. Servant Stage artistic director Wally Calderon will serve as director and choreographer with Kendra Bigley directing the music and the orchestra. The cast also features Amber Emerson in the role of Marian Paroo, Katherine Rundall as Mrs. Paroo, and Ric Zimmerman, Michael Sole, Daniel Grayberg, and Matthew Wilhelm as the barbershop quartet. Dan Lehning and Renee Markell play the roles of Mayor and Mrs. Shinn, respectively.
“It’s one of our largest and most talented casts ever, and we can’t wait to share this production with our community,” Calderon said. “It’s a familyfriendly show that’s great for all ages, both for the audience and the cast. ‘The Music Man’ seemed like a great fit for our season.” “The Music Man” has been a staple of musical theater since it debuted on Broadway in 1957, and Servant Stage is expecting more than 10,000 people to attend its performances. In keeping with Servant Stage’s mission to make great performances accessible to everyone in the community, all presentations are offered as pay-whatyou-will. The curtain will rise at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 6, 13, and 20; Saturdays, Sept. 7, 14, and 21; and Sundays, Sept. 8, 15, and 22. Matinees will begin at 3 p.m. on Sept. 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, and 22. Although an admission price has not been set, tickets are required and may be reserved by visiting www.servantstagecompany.com or calling 717-455-0255.
Servant Stage Company executive director Johnathan Bauer will appear as Professor Harold Hill in performances of “The Music Man” on select dates from Sept. 6 to 22.
themes appeal to people of all ages. “There is a beautiful love story, but there are moments where you just have to laugh at these characters,” he said. “Who doesn’t love pirates running around on stage making fools of themselves?” Huyard reported that cast members are having fun exploring their parts. “The characters are zany and off the wall, and playing a pirate is so much fun,” he noted, adding that the daughters of the Major-General are fun and quirky characters as well. Cavod’s stage space is limited, but Huyard noted that the show fits the accommodations well. “We will have a beautiful set with a dock of stained wood, fish nets, and other nautical themes,” said Huyard.
Huyard hopes that members of the community of all ages will see the production. “The grandson who loves pirates is going to have a blast watching these pirates being chased by police officers,” Huyard said of the slapstick scenes that should appeal to children. “Adults will love it because of the beautiful music, so it’s a great family outing, but it’s also a great date night show because it’s a romantic comedy,” he added. “If you like pirates or if you love music, you’re going to love this show.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.
Cavod from pg 1 a pilot. The error is the fault of Ruth, Frederic’s hard-of-hearing nursemaid, played by Jennifer Shaffer. To make matters worse, Frederic’s apprenticeship was supposed to end on the day he turns 21; however, it is discovered that the boy was born on Feb. 29 in a leap year, meaning that he still has many years as an apprentice before he reaches his liberation. Frederic has fallen in love with Mabel, played by Katherine Lindsley. Moses Mariscal plays Mabel’s father, Major-General Stanley, who proclaims himself in a well-known song “the very model of a modern Major-General.” Neal Sheaffer will play the Pirate King, with Francisco Ortiz as Samuel, his lieutenant, and James Paxson as the Sergeant of Police. Cavod’s “Pirates” will be directed by Reji Woods, with musical direction by Michael Truitt and choreography by Jessica Rajski. Huyard said that the show represents an important era in entertainment history. “It’s kind of like the transition from operas to modern-day musical theater,” he said, noting that the comedy is technically an opera. “At the time, the term musical theater (didn’t exist).” Calling the music beautiful, Huyard noted that the vocal parts are incredibly difficult. “It’s an operetta, so the female lead is singing stuff similar to what the female lead in the ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ would sing,” he said, noting that he believes the cast has the background and musical ability to make the show a success. “(These cast members are) some of the strongest vocal talents we have had here,” he said. According to Huyard, the script mixes laughs with heartwarming moments and tops it off with the variety of songs. “The hilarity and comedy of the story is encased in this beautiful music,” said Huyard. “It’s hilarious, but it is also heartwarming.” He noted that the timeless

Foundation president Barry Girvin noted that he is especially looking forward to Zahm’s presentation about the Jacobite risings, during which Zahm will tell stories and sing songs. The festival is a celebration of the Scottish birthright of the Covenanters who settled in southern Lancaster and Chester counties. “We have a lot of good heritage events (during the festival), said foundation treasurer Donna McCool. “We’ve got the haggis ceremony, fiddling demonstrations, and sheep herding. We have things for children, too, which is new. Additionally, Scottish clans and organizations will be represented at the festival, and vendors will sell Scottish goods and food. American food will be available for purchase as well. Fiber artists are slated to demonstrate spinning and weaving, and Irish dances will be demonstrated as well. The festival will be held rain or shine. Doris Kreiter of Lititz is not happy that her husband, Dave, is retiring - even though Dave is 83. “I hate to see him retire because we have a good time,” said Doris, referring to her husband giving up calling square dances, which he has been doing since the mid1970s. The pair founded the the Swing Thru Square Dance Club in 1974. Doris is still looking forward to the last two fun nights of calling that Dave has on his schedule. Although Dave is retiring, the club he and Doris founded is still going strong, and members are excited to teach square dancing to the next generation. In fact, the club will offer two free introductory nights for those who are interested in learning a bit about this form of dance. The club invites singles, couples, groups, and families to Luther Acres Wellness Center, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, on Thursdays, Sept. 12 and 19, at 7 p.m. Classes will begin on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. The Kreiters first experienced square dancing at a Lancaster establishment called Worh’s Play Barn, which was located behind the stockyards in Lancaster. “We enjoyed it,” commented Doris. “We decided we wanted to take lessons.” The couple headed to Bob Lintner’s home in Lampeter for lessons, which they took for at least a year. “During class I was fascinated with (Bob’s) calling, and I wanted to get into it,” said Dave. “Toward the end of class, he would let me do a singing call.” After the couple finished taking

Dave, who noted that he once called at events for 27 consecutive evenings, said that most dances are in the Plus category. Dave noted that he has called for groups that danced in swimming pools, on lawns, and on the beach. More than once, a group of dancers would go to a restaurant after a dance and ask if they could dance there. “After a while they would push tables back,” recalled Dave. “There was no music.” “They would just dance what he was calling,” finished Doris. Dave judged the square dancing at the annual Pennsylvania Farm
Show in Harrisburg for about 20 years. “We judged on dancing skills, timing, execution of calls,” he said. Doris remembers when the couple attended a national square dancing convention in Atlantic City in 1976 with about 27,000 other dancers. Although the pair has not danced in a while, they highly recommend dancing for coordination and exercise. “It’s good for your brain,” said Doris. “It’s good for your (heart),” added Dave. Readers who would like to know more about the free lessons may call or text 717-314-7570.

lessons and founded the club, they held a dance class for teenagers at the old Lititz Rec Center, which was located in Lititz Springs Park. “We finally advertised the class and a couple of the guys and girls got together, and we discussed what to name the group and came up with the Swing Thru,” said Dave. They were also involved in dances in the area and around the state. “ We went to a lot of square dances and to the convention at State College,” recalled Doris. By 1976, Dave was ready to crank things up a notch. “I went to callers school in Harrisonburg, Va.,” said Dave. “There were four callers that ran the school, and (students) got up early and went to class morning, afternoon, and evening.” Dave explained that calling came naturally to him, but he sometimes heard other students practicing calls as late as 2 a.m. “There are different types of calling,” Dave noted. Singing calls are done to familiar songs. Dave used “Me and My Shadow” often. Dave also likes to do calling that is referred to as “hash” or “patter.” “That is when I put the needle down (on the record) and the dancers do whatever I call. I tear them apart and put them back together.” Dave is licensed to call through Callerlab, the International Association of Square Dance Callers, and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. Square dances are divided into Mainstream, which are the most basic; Plus, which are a bit beyond basic; and Advanced, for those

Margie, at college in New York; they have been married 41 years and raised several children. After completing his undergraduate studies, Gerlach served as the director of music ministries at Manor Church near Mountville. He then earned a master’s degree in music from West Chester University. Gerlach and his family left Lancaster so he could finish a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He worked as a professor at College of the Ozarks near Branson, Mo., until taking early retirement in 2016 to move back to Pennsylvania. Although retired from his previous position, Gerlach has not left academia. He teaches music theory at Lancaster Bible College (LBC) and conducts the concert choir for grades nine to 12 at the Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts. Gerlach applied for the position at the Lancaster Chorale so that he could get back into conducting at an advanced level. He is also working on composing and arranging a full orchestral score for the show “Ruth,” which will be performed at LBC in January 2020.

The new season of the Lancaster Chorale will begin on Sunday, Sept. 8, with the first rehearsal at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Registration will open at 2 p.m. The group will continue to meet on Sundays thereafter, and every rehearsal is expected to run from 3 to 5 p.m. Anyone is welcome to join the chorale, and auditions are not required. The group was founded in 2000 and typically has had about 100 singers, said Bruce Gerlach, the chorale’s new director. Gerlach succeeds Jonathan Rajaseelan. “As the new conductor of the chorale, I hope to maintain and hopefully expand on the success it has had with its past conductors through the years,” Gerlach remarked. “My goal is to lead a group of highly proficient and trained singers and to have the most fun that they have ever had in singing.” Gerlach noted that with the shift in church music away from choirs and toward contemporary worship bands, talented singers no longer have as many outlets to perform collaboratively. The Lancaster Chorale provides an opportunity for people who may have sung in high school, college, or church choirs to participate in an artistic, choral singing group once again.
“Excellent diction and a healthy approach to singing and good tone will be taught and expected. Great sacred classical literature will be the staple, but we will also sing some modern and secular works,” Gerlach said. The Lancaster Chorale usually gives two performances a year, once each in the fall and the spring. The fall 2019 concert is themed “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” and will be presented at Calvary Church at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. The chorale will sing numerous classically oriented pieces with the emphasis on praising God. The featured work will be John Rutter’s “Gloria,” whose three movements will be accompanied by brass, percussion, and organ. In spring 2020, the chorale is slated to perform the oratorio “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn, accompanied by full orchestra. “I hope that all former members of the chorale come back to the group after being off during the entire spring of 2019,” Gerlach said. “And I hope we can attract a large number of new members. Were you in County or District Chorus in high school? Wasn’t it a grand experience? Join the Lancaster Chorale for another grand experience.” Gerlach comes to the chorale with decades of experience in music education and conducting. He grew up in Washington Boro and graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1974. Gerlach met his wife,

A Burkholder utility trailer will go up for bids at 12:30 p.m. Other donations that will cross the auction block include an adult-size bicycle, a large number of theme baskets, lawn furniture, plants, and more. A silent auction, which will also begin at 9 a.m., is well known for featuring Dining for Dollars meals, many of which are donated by Fairmount staff members. This year a number of meals have been donated, including an Alaskan halibut dinner and a meal in a bouquet, where the food is arranged to look like flowers. In addition, a harvest meal will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 6 p.m. in the Farm Crest Community Room. Tickets are available now at the Wheat Ridge or Crest View front desks. Each year, the event also features a chicken barbecue, including a leg and a thigh, applesauce, a roll and butter, chips, and a chocolate chip cookie.
