Just prior to March 19, Svitlana Shekh, living in the Donetsk region of Ukraine with her two young daughters, made the decision to leave. The war was intensifying. “Every night Russian fighter jets flew overhead,” she recalled. “We had spare clothing next to us (as we slept), so we could pick up and leave anyOnminute.”March 19, Svitlana drove the three to the Russian border. Donetsk has been under Russian occupation since 2014. The Shekhs crossed the Russian border and drove more than 1,500 miles north to the Latvian border, where Svitlana was advised to think hard about crossing because she would not be allowed to return. Svitlana’s husband, David, was waiting for her in Latvia, and she chose to go. David had been working in Germany as a ceramic tile installer. From Latvia, the family drove more than 1,200 miles to Germany, and from there they were able to fly to Boston, landing on June 3. The Shekhs came as part of a group of five families, but there are many more who want to leave Ukraine or are internally displaced persons and in need of help, according to Konstantin Reznik, a member of Bethany Slavik Church in Ephrata. The church has organized the Refugee Welcome Fundraising Dinner, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Ephrata Business Center, 400 W. Main St., at 6 p.m. The meal will feature refugees sharing their stories and opportunities for attendees to sponsor families for housing, food, and transportation. Homemade f oods that will be served will include borscht, katleti, and galupsi.

According to Peter Passage, stewardship director at Fairmount, the organization’s annual auction and chicken barbecue, which benefits the community’s Sharing Fund, is a collaborative effort. Asked about the many theme baskets that will be auctioned at the event, Passage noted that they are contributed by staff and a variety of sources from the surrounding community. In fact, contributions to be auctioned have come from as far away as Ireland. Bethany Slavic Church

BY ANN MEAD ASH W hen Todd Capitao, director of financial empowerment at Tenfold, got married, he and his wife realized they were not quite in control of their spending. “I went to the dollar store and got a ledger and started tracking expenses,” said Capitao, who has since graduated to a computer spreadsheet for this purpose. In his role overseeing financial literacy classes for Tenfold’s Ann B. Barshinger Financial Empowerment Center, Capitao knows he has

to practice what he preaches. Using a variety of apps combined with opportunity shopping and his spreadsheet, Capitao is on top of his family budget and happy to teach others how they can achieve that goal. “We have standard workshops,” said Capitao, who noted that before the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, classes were held in person. Now the classes are held virtually on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and Thursdays at 10 a.m. “We do budget, credit, savings, lending, and banking,” said Capitao. “Those are the five cores, and they are very basic.” Capitao tells those considering taking classes that he recommends taking the budgeting class first. “That’s key,” he said. “You can’t properly save unless you are budgeting.”Inaddition, each quarter that classes are held, a few electives are included. “It could be how to be more Earth conscious or how to buy a car or fraud,” Capitao said. “Those are things we try to review outside the standard ones.”

Capitao explained that classes are taught with regard to student understanding. “The terms are defined,” he said, noting that students receive a book and that they may ask questions during classes verbally or via chat. He noted that classes are content driven and that those who are self-motivated can do well in them.According to Capitao, the best action to take following the classes is to sit down with a financial counselor either in person, virtually, or by telephone. “If we have 20 people in a virtual class, we cannot do 20 individual budgets,” he explained. “We will give (students) the tools and ideas and skills, but if (a student) has trouble or concerns doing a budget or handling credit, (they should) see us in person or virtually or by phone.” Before COVID-19, Tenfold personnel had dreamed of holding classes online, but now they would be happy to hold in-person classes again, and they welcome inquiries from organizations such as churches, ministries, businesses, and other that would like to host in-person classes. Pointing out the benefits of working with a counselor, Capitao noted that many people receive an extra paycheck twice a year that they do not always consider. “The counselors here have been able to assist people out of (the start of going into debt) because of that extra paycheck that isn’t on their radar,” he said. In the past, organizations, such as The Factory Ministries in Paradise, have offered rewards in the form of Factory Bucks to be used at The Factory Market, to participant who enroll in a class that effects theirReaderssustainability.whoare interested in taking Tenfold financial literacy classes may register by visiting www.wearetenfold.org and clicking on “events/classes.” Individuals who have questions may call 717-397-5182.

A braided rug handmade and donated by a Fairmount resident will also be sold. The 26-by-54-inch rug is made of all-new wool and features a mixture of colors and patterns, including purple, teal, aqua, red, black, and brown in both plaids and solids.Attendees who are outbid or not in need of any auction items can also help the Sharing Fund with a Make a Difference bid, which will cover a half day or full day of patient care. Both Passage and Swailes enjoyed discussing the many food items that will be available for purchase. In addition to breakfast, Passage noted homemade doughnuts will be made on-site. Swailes added that french fries made on-site and fry pies, which are similar to turnovers, will be sold. Passage pointed out that fresh squeezed lemonade is a perennial favorite and that soft ice cream will be sold. Passage noted organizers expect to sell ground cherry pies at the event. The Sharing Fund covers about $2.8 million yearly in uncompensated resident care. The 2021 auction and barbecue raised $109,950, but this year this year, organizers hope the event will bring in $125,000 for the cause. The Walk for D.E.S. (Detect. Early. Signs.), a suicide awareness and remembrance event, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10. The event, which will include a 5K walk/run, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Manheim Township Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville. The Walk for D.E.S. is one of many ways to honor the life of someone who died by suicide, show support to survivors of suicide, forward the cause of suicide awareness and prevention across Lancaster County, and provide resources and tools aimed at preventing suicide. The goal is to save lives and restore hope through awareness, prevention, and intervention. It was founded by Mark Schantzer, whose son, Desmond, died by suicide. The American Society of Railway Artists, formed in 2013, encourages the depiction of railroading past and present through art. The society counts both noted and emerging railroad artists among its members and presents a variety of opportunities annually for those who love art and railroading to comeAdditionally, together.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host Railroad Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 10, and the public is invited.Theevent will include a Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society educational and historical display, as well as a vintage Ford truck in the Pennsylvania Railroad livery from Ken Briers. At 11 a.m., Marino J. “Joe” Acri III will present on the Pennsylvania Railroad G5’s locomotive and backup service with commuter trains. Retired CSX engineer Dominic “DJ” Arlia will speak at 1 p.m. about his experiences working for the railroad, his model railroading hobby, being a licensed drone pilot, and his YouTube videos. In addition, Frank Crowe will create and exhibit works at the museum on Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11. Crowe is one of four artists-in-residence who will be hosted at the museum in the coming months in cooperation with the American Society of Railway Artists. The other artists are Gil Bennett, Ken Muramoto, and Nadine Charlsen. Crowe began watching trains at an early age, took up drawing and painting them and, as a result, earned a scholarship to the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, Crowe worked briefly for several railroads, and today he is a senior designer for a large carpet manufacturer. His work allows him to travel, shoot railroad photography, and paint. He has photographed trains in the 48 contiguous United States and in all but one Canadian province.Bennett will visit the museum on Saturday, Oct. 22, and Sunday, Oct. 23. He has had a passion for trains since age 2. Classically trained, he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in architecture and fine arts. A selfdescribed “rivet counter,” he makes sure his subjects are rendered as accurately as possible. Bennett’s works in oil and watercolor are collected and commissioned by individuals worldwide and may also be found on calendars, cards, and book Muramotocovers.will also be present at the museum on Oct. 22 and 23. Muramoto blends his fascination with trains with his love of art. Diagnosed with autism at age 3, he showed a gift for drawing early on, and this talent was nurtured by his parents. He has received numerous awards in community shows. Charlsen will visit the museum on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4. She is an urban landscape watercolor artist with a flair for trains and industrial sites. From her extensive background as a theatrical lighting designer, she incorporates light, shadows, scale, colors, and textures into her work. While Charlsen paints all things related to the railroad industry, she said she particularly enjoys the challenge that capturing steam engines presents, as their workings are exposed and need to be portrayed accurately.

Campers Take Part In Community Service Projects

Summer campers at Chesterbrook Academy Preschools recently participated in two community service projects. Campers at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool Lancaster donated more than $350 to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a national childhood cancer foundation dedicated to funding research, raising awareness, supporting families and empowering everyone to help cure childhood cancer. To raise money for the foundation, campers sold lemonade and cookies to their fellow campers, their families, staff members and teachers. Campers at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool at College Hill donated more than $100 to Lancaster County Community Foundation, which supports more than 500 local organizations and works to better the community for generations to come. To raise money for the foundation, campers held a Penny War at the school, where classrooms competed to see who could collect the most pennies. Through both initiatives, campers learned the importance of spreading kindness and helping those in need.
