Moving “Forward, Together” ccording to Joseph Martin, a member of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band public relations team, this year’s show, dubbed “Forward, Together,” begins as anything but a unified presentation. “I see this show as like a hurricane,” said Martin. “The opening song is loud, aggressive, fast, with competing voices and driving forces. The ballad is calmer. It’s like the eye of the storm. Our closing is the rebuilding from the storm - coming back together and building up to something stronger than before.” The 37 students in the band and 3 color guard, along with a featured twirler, practiced the drill at the school stadium each day from Aug. 16 through 20. “Forward, Together” features “Allegro barbaro,” by Béla Bartók, as the opener; “Wayfaring Stranger,” a traditional tune as the ballad; and “Boléro,” by Maurice Ravel, as the closer.

A

Agreeing with Martin, student director Emma Graybill added that the show reflects current themes of dissonance. “It resonates with all of us,” said Graybill, noting that the opener explores discord. “Within the music for ‘Allegro,’ you hear those competing sounds … where the snares are doing a pattern and the tenors are doing something completely different,” she said, adding that the difficulty of performing that well makes the show challenging, but also “really cool.” Band vice president Joel Olmsted agreed, noting that while the music is significantly more challenging than last year, it is the level of difficulty that makes the music interesting. Joel will have a clarinet solo in the show, and Paige Olmsted will solo on mellophone. The drill includes complicated movements as well. “There are a lot of difficult cross-throughs,” said Graybill, noting that the winds and drums will have to pass each other closely without incident. Sweetness Soft Shoe … And Hard Shoe … And Set CV Student Triumphs At Irish Dance Championships And Laughter BY ANN MEAD ASH

Life Awakening Event Will Feature Comedian

Natalie Raff, who turned 13 in early July, is a veteran of Irish dance competitions. The student of certified teacher Sara Locke of the Hooley School of Irish Dance in Brownstown, which is directed by Crystal Carper, has participated in four national competitions and has traveled to Ireland three times and to Scotland once to take part in contests there as well. But even with that experience, Raff’s family members found themselves “jumping up and down and screaming” when Raff was named as

Coming off the COVID-19 restrictions that marked the last several months, staff at Life Awakening made the decision that the organization’s 13th annual fundraiser should be on the lighter side. With that goal in mind, they gave the event the theme “It’s Time to Laugh Again” and engaged Christian comedian Gordon Douglas to entertain following a fruit and See Life Awakening pg 2

one of the three top champions in the under-13 age group at the U.S. National Irish Dance Championships, held in Phoenix, Ariz., from July 6 through 10. About 300 dancers took part in the under-13 age category, so the group was divided into thirds and a winner named for each group. The grouping is based on the competitor’s age on Jan. 1. Raff is the first Hooley dancer to be named a winner in the competition. Raff said she did not expect to win. “I haven’t won anything that big before,” said the teenager, who uses a meditation program to calm

CVHS Teacher Wins Award Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) science teacher James Hovan received the 2021 North Museum Science and Engineering Fair’s Board of Directors Prize. The Board of Directors Prize was established by the North Museum of Nature and Science in 2009. Each year, educators are nominated by their peers for the award, and one teacher is selected. The winner’s school district receives a prize, including $1,000 to support science education.

Hovan has coordinated and directed the Conestoga Valley Science Expo for nearly 20 years. In addition, in 2016-17, CVHS implemented the Honors Scientific Research Class, which Hovan was recommended to teach. In this class, Hovan has mentored hundreds of science fair students as their adult sponsor. In addition to his teaching duties at CVHS, Hovan supports the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair as a member of

the Governing Scientific Review Committee (SRC). In that role, Hovan attends SRC meetings, project review nights, and new teacher presentations, and he supports the science fair by conducting safety and display inspections, moderating the judges’ deliberation rooms, and distributing the auxiliary and category awards.

dessert bar that will include glutenfree options. Life Awakening will hold the fundraiser on Thursday, Sept. 23, at Springside Barn, 1294 Weaverland Road, East Earl, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Douglas is a pastor and speaker, as well as a comedian, known for weaving life lessons into his programs and sharing what he has learned through tragic deaths, his wife’s recovery from cancer, his dad’s many years in a wheelchair, and other experiences. Douglas has previously performed in the New Holland area and at Life Awakening events. “We have had him two other times, and people really loved him, so we decided to bring him back,” said Life Awakening executive director Linda Ingham. In addition to the wit of Douglas the event will feature, Ingham talking about the Life Awakening Academy (LA Academy), a new training program that will premiere in January 2022 in order to teach people to use the Gospel Process. “God started downloading the Gospel Process to me (in 2007),” recalled Ingham. “The Gospel Process is a way to take people into freedom, healing, and victory beyond salvation and into abundant life.” Ingham began writing books and manuals about the process and training others in how to use it. “I don’t think there’s a wound or a place of sin where the Gospel cannot reach,” said Ingham, who recently completed preparing the Gospel Process materials for use by the LA Academy. Miriam Remington, director of the LA Academy, will speak about turning the Gospel Process into a course that the organization eventually hopes to offer online. The Process has been divided into four phases that each build on each other. Phase one is the lifestyle seminar focused on breaking the damaging power of sin. Phase two begins teaching God’s design for life in union with Christ. Phase three pertains to God’s heart and plan for His children, and phase four explores the facilitator’s role in the Process. In addition, YWAM missionaries Josiah and Kayla Shenk will discuss how they are using the Process in their ministry. Readers who would like to attend the event are asked to make reservations by Wednesday, Sept. 15, by emailing chelsea@lifeawakening 07.org or calling 717-354-2888. There is no charge to attend, but a freewill offering will be received.

To earn the top spot, Raff competed in hard and soft shoe categories and a third category called “set,” which is performed solo in hard shoes. The set competition allows the dancer to choose music and show off his or her best moves. Raff said that she knew she was among the top 12 dancers when her number was called to go up on stage after the competition, but anticipation grew as she waited while all the other contestants in her group were ranked before the judges counted down the top con-

HIGH HORSEPOWER testants starting with number 12. Although COVID-19 restrictions decreased the number of competitions Raff could take part in over the last 18 months, she looks forward to competing in the 13 and over category during the next year. She noted that because most competitions are held on weekends or during the summer, she intends to continue to compete throughout her high school years. With a schedule that includes seven hours of lessons each week, plus practice time, maybe there will be more championships in her future. LCHS from pg 1 The level of difficulty presents special challenges for those who have not taken part in a drill before or who started last year when the drill was abbreviated. Band president Vivian Klemmer pointed out that there are more sets involved in just “Allegro” than in last year’s entire show. Katie Lyle, color guard captain, said that the group will change

props throughout the show. “For the opener, we will use dark purple swing flags,” she said adding that she will perform a solo, along with featured twirler Alixandra Malmus. Six-foot flags will be utilized, and multicolored flags will be used at the end to symbolize unity. Another special feature will include Lyle and Malmus in a call and response with baton and rifle. Klemmer said that the end of the show will represent the possibilities of future unity when band members join together one-by-one. “At the end of the ballad, we are behind the panels that are used as props, and at the beginning of the closer, a drum will come out and then a clarinetist,” she explained. “(The theme) relates to the state of the world. It’s a very good topic,” noted Graybill.

Weis Markets’ Fight Hunger Campaign works with regional food banks throughout its seven-state market area, including the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg and Williamsport; Helping Harvest, Reading; Greater Berks FoodBank, Reading; and Philabundance in Montgomery and Bucks counties.
