Most Rewarding GOTR Bestows Ellen Award, Seeks Coaches BY ANN MEAD ASH
hen Cara Scudner’s young cousin asked her to help with the Girls on Track team she had joined at Sacred Heart in Lancaster in 2013, Scudner was prepared. Having taken 5:30 a.m. jaunts with Back on My Feet - a running program for members of the homeless community - during her last year of college, Scudner signed on as assistant coach. Following the end of that season, Scudner contacted Jen West, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director, to ask where the program might use her as a coach. Since then, Scudner, who is a competitive adult figure skater with the Red Rose Figure Skating Club, has coached 17 seasons with GOTR, including stints at Fritz and Nitrauer elementary schools and even organizing a community team made up of girls from public, private, and homeschool situations in
W
Leola during 2020. Scudner also set up a decorated 5K course for participants who lived near her home when GOTR’s spring 2020 event was canceled. In June of 2021, Scudner was presented with the Ellen Award, which is named for Ellen McCabe, who was West’s stepmother. GOTR coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, parents, and girls who make up the GOTR teams, among others. Scudner was nominated by parents and participants, with several lauding her positive outlook, caring attitude, availability to the girls, and passion to help them develop self-confidence. Scudner sees coaching as an opportunity to give back while reaping satisfaction from the participants’ accomplishments. “The most rewarding thing is seeing the girls gain confidence and seeing how much they change over the season,” said Scudner, who added that everything about coaching is fun, but
that the culminating 5K, which the girls run at the end of the season, is “magical.” The winner of the Ellen Award receives a special bracelet and $500 to donate to the nonprofit of her choice. Scudner chose Patients R Waiting, an organization focused on eliminating health disparities by increasing diversity in medicine. While Scudner organized a community GOTR team at a church near her home during COVID-19 restrictions, the organization is returning to meeting at many Lancaster schools for the fall season. The program will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 6, with a 5K at Millersville University, 40 Dilworth Road, Millersville, at 8:30 a.m. About 20 teams and as many as 400 participants are expected for the fall season, but West would like to see more girls be able to take part in the spring of 2022. To increase the number of participants, more volunteer coaches are needed. “Many See GOTR pg 7

“I think Stan Deen was a remarkable man in the way he encouraged and helped other people,” said Dale Bradley of Inspiring Films. “He defined his life with that.” Dale has moved to Lancaster to make “Brave the Dark,” the story of the late Garden Spot High School (GSHS) teacher Stan Deen and the troubled young man he took in during the 1980s, Nate Busko, now Nate Deen. “But there are lots of men and women like that, so this is an everyman story,” continued Dale, who See Stan pg 4
Organizers of the annual Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show include (from left) John Beaumont, Lisa Madenspacher, Paris Llanso, Roy Baldwin, and Irene Miller.
Former Manheim Township supervisor and former Pennsylvania state Rep. Roy Baldwin remembers when Boettcher House Museum in Landis Woods became a township facility in 1996. “We had three objectives for the museum,” recalled Baldwin, who listed preserving natural history, renting the facility, and holding events. In 1999, one of those events, an annual art show, kicked off. “I promoted that because I had good relationships with local artists,” said Baldwin, who mentioned Lisa Madenspacher,

Asked about her inspiration for holding an outdoor concert, St. John’s Center Lutheran Church director of music and organist Vickie Kissinger responded simply, “We love to sing.” A concert in the grove will be held at St. John’s Center Lutheran Church, 599 Reading Road, East Earl, on Sunday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. The concert will feature Pennsylvania State Senior Idol winner Kissinger and Dr. Jun Chon. AHAVA band from Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schoeneck will also perform. The concert will feature traditional Christian music/hymns, gospel, and contemporary Christian music. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be held on Friday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. Kissinger is a mezzo-soprano and classically trained pianist and organist with a concentration in jazz piano studies. She studied under master voice teacher Thomas Houser. She holds a degree in music education from Millersville University. Chon, who is a tenor, is an avid vocalist, performing at weddings and events, and singing at local churches. Chon is a graduate of Tulane University. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Chon is known for improvement initiatives he has championed at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. “This is our third attempt to sing a concert since Nov. 2, 2013,” noted Kissinger. That first concert was a fundraiser for Relay For Life. A second concert was planned for Nov. 2, 2019, but it was canceled when Chon’s family had a pressing conflict. The concert was rescheduled for May 2020, but it was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Kissinger is director of music at Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shoeneck, where she formed a praise band called AHAVA, which means “love” in Hebrew. “There’s a lot of musical talent there, so it’s working wonderfully,” said Kissinger. “We have all professional musicians in the band,” she added, pointing out that two of the members are also participants in the well-known Craven Family Band. Calling the songs AHAVA will perform “new and fresh,” Kissinger said members are looking forward to performing a different genre of music. AHAVA members include Kissinger as director and on keyboard and vocals; the Rev. Tim Craven, church pastor, on guitar and vocals; Kim Craven on bass; Erin and John Biles providing vocals; and Jonathan Hogan on percussion.

runs Inspiring Films with his brother Grant. “Good movies need to resonate with people,” he added. “You need to know people like (the characters in the film) or be like (them) or wish you were like (them).” Grant discovered the true story behind the film about five years ago when visiting Lancaster County looking for possible film subjects. He met Nate, who works at Sight & Sound, and heard his story. Nate was orphaned at a young age after a tragedy involving his parents. He became part of the foster care system, eventually leaving as a teenager only to find himself homeless living in the car he had purchased with wages from a part-time job. Nate was using school showers and eating raw corn on the cob from the fields where he parked his car at night when Stan offered him a chocolate bar after class. When Nate found himself in jail only weeks later, Stan visited him, offering him a place to live and a second chance. “Brave the Dark” will begin filming in Lancaster this month, with scenes due to be shot at GSHS on weekends and holidays. Derek Dienner of Make/Films, who knew Stan, knows Nate, and graduated from GSHS in 2003, is co-producing with Inspiring Films to be sure Lancaster County authenticity and flavor are in the mix. To that end, Dienner has talked to the current owner of the Ritz in New Holland about including the marquis in some scenes and to ELANCO School District about using a retro gymnasium located in the middle school. Dienner reported that a chain of talented writers, directors, and actors has formed around the script for the story. “Grant got the script to director Damian Harris, who fell in love with it and brought it to Joe

McDougal, who is now assistant director, and he got Julio Macat, director of photography (involved),” explained Dienner. The movie will star Jared Harris as Stan, and Nicholas Hamilton as Nate. Residents of Lancaster County who knew Stan have risen to the occasion, reporting on how the Garden Spot Performing Arts founder influenced their lives. “A lot of the people who were impacted by Stan are involved in some way in this film,” said Dienner. “This movie is getting made because everyone knows who Stan was.” Dienner added that at the heart of the film is the importance of fatherhood. “That’s what it’s about,” he said. “It shows the love of a father.” This is Make/Films’ first feature film, and having the chance to work with a story that packs meaningful influence is important to Dienner. “(This story) has the potential to bring the fatherhood of Stan and the (redeemed) character of Nate to the world in a way that can make people say, ‘I can make a difference,’” he said. “What better way to start?”

Brethren Disaster Relief Auction Posted After a year’s hiatus because of COVID, the 44th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction (BDRA), will be held at the Lebanon Valley Exposition Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 25, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided over $17 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. Funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate
relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from disasters from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown. Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer gently used items, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals. Weather permitting, there will also be free barrel train rides and pony rides for a nominal donation. See BDRA pg 5

On The Path To Success Under Pathways, students may earn Technical Institute in the High School credits, receive postsecondary credit transfers, participate in dual enrollment or earn credits through the state Students Occupationally and Academically Ready (SOAR) program. Pathways will allow students in senior-year programs the opportunity to accumulate credits that will follow them into higher education with partnering institutions. Higher learning partners include all community colleges throughout Pennsylvania as well as Delaware Valley University, Pennsylvania College of Technology and more. Students will also be able to work toward earning their
Associate in Specialized Technology (AST) degree. “I’m really excited about what we’re doing with our associate degree programs,” said Mike Moeller, director of curriculum. LCCTC allows credit transfers for students in its high school automotive technology program into its AST associate degree program, and plans are in the works to add the school’s other two associate degree programs - veterinary technology and dental hygiene - to the credit transfer program as well. Moeller noted that programs like the ones offered at LCCTC are meeting the needs of today’s employers while also serving the students.
Brace yourself for the “silver tsunami.” That’s a term used to describe the predicted dearth of workers in the future as the current workforce ages into retirement. Through an innovative initiative, the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), is equipping students to prepare for their future. For more than 50 years, LCCTC has provided opportunities for high school and adult education, career training and workforce development. The Pathways to Careers and Higher Education program just launched for the 2021-22 school year and will build a bridge between secondary and postsecondary education. It serves as an umbrella over the various postsecondary opportunities available to students, said Amber Kreger, director of higher and continuing education. “This is a way to better serve our community of students by offering a pathway from what they are learning in high school directly into what they will learn in our adult program,” she explained. “The students are already in the same buildings as our adult learners. They cross paths often, so we thought, ‘Why not offer a program where the students can benefit from what we already do here?’” LCCTC recently launched the Pathways program.
There will be an area for vendors of crafts and art objects and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including homemade pies. Amish doughnuts and Amish soft pretzels, both homemade onsite, will be available. Artisan Alley, located in the West Hall, will be a collection of juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, artisan bread, handmade pottery and various artists. To find out more about the auction, visit www.brethrenauction.org, call on the day of the auction at 717723-6863 or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers.

Grave Concern will hold a quarterly public meeting and program on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster County Mennonite Information Center, located next to the historical society at 2209 Millstream Road (Route 30 East), Lancaster. “Using DNA to Trace Family History” will be presented by Darvin L. Martin, who has been studying DNA in regard to family history since 2008. Martin will explain how DNA can help expand one’s family history beyond the standard paper trail of census lists, deeds, wills, tax records, and cemetery records. DNA analysis, used in combination with all the other research tools available for family history, can provide the means to verify and enhance the story of one’s ancestors. Admission will be free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Face masks and social distancing are encouraged. Grave Concern is an organization dedicated to the history, preservation and restoration of historical burial places. For more information, readers may call 717-393-9745.

Madenspacher, who has traditionally participated in the show but is skipping this year, said that her daughter, artist Adrienne Judge, would take part. “She has always had artistic flair,” said Madenspacher, displaying a metallic abstract painting by Judge. “This year … she dove into (her creative side) headfirst, and she is doing great.” Paris Llanso has participated for many years. The local artist, known for her prima impasto method, displayed a commissioned piece of a llama, a rabbit, and a bird. “I am working on a similar piece for the show,” said Llanso. One of artist Irene Miller’s works is a precise Lancaster County farm scene based on a property located north of Lititz. “I do watercolor, (but) I don’t do the traditional watercolors,” explained Miller, meaning that her work does not have the fluid appearance often associated with watercolor. During the art show, organizers will hold
hourly drawings for gift certificates to be used toward the purchase of artwork. Each attendee will receive a ticket as he or she enters the event. Refreshments will be available for purchase from the Neffsville Mennonite Church youth group. Both admission and parking are free. John Beaumont, who organizes the musical entertainment for the show, has put together a lineup that brings back a number of favorites from past events. Musical groups will include the Sorrentino Jazz Band at 9:30 a.m. and Stone Soup String Band playing old-time mountain music at 11:15 a.m. At 1 p.m., the Steve Barth Band will play rock tunes and soft rock covers. At 2:45 p.m., TJ Earley, of which Beaumont is a member, will play originals and covers of blues, rock, and soft rock songs. Attendees may enter the event grounds from either Hillside Lane or Meadow Lane, located off Lititz Pike in Neffsville.

Baldwin’s efforts to launch the local show were successful, and this year, the 21st annual Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds, 2369 Lititz Pike, Neffsville, on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An art walk, which will feature the work of local high school artists, is planned from noon until 3 p.m. on the day of the show. Items that artists and craftspeople will sell at the show include jewelry, mixed-media pieces, abstract art, landscapes, watercolor paintings, ceramics, and pottery. This year, an artist who specializes in body painting will be present to take appointments. The show is billed as a child-friendly and pet-friendly event.
