Practicing “Resilience” BY ANN MEAD ASH

This Conestoga Valley School District student was happy to receive a backpack and school supplies during Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services’ recent back-to-school giveaway.

Ready For School! Backpack Giveaway Provides Supplies To CV Students

August 2020 was not the first time Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), located at 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, held a backpack giveaway for Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) students, but it was the first time backpacks were distributed drive-through style. “This year, with COVID, we were forced to look at it differently,” said Angela Trout, director of advancement with CVCCS, who reported that the organization gave away more than 100 backpacks during two distributions held Aug. 12 and 19. To facilitate the distributions, families that are connected to the ministry through the CVCCS food bank were invited to register for one of the two pickup times. Information concerning the

number of students and grade level - elementary, middle, or high school - was ascertained. During the pickup, a CVCCS representative would ask for the students’ names. “(Our) list may say (a family has) an elementary school girl and a middle school boy,” said Trout. “We have (backpacks) … (and) we go and pull those and bring them out.” Trout noted that registrants received more than backpacks and school supplies during the pickup. “We also had a ton of cookies donated from food stores,” she said. “Whenever you come to our food bank whether for a backpack distribution or for food, you always leave with more than enough.” COVID-19 restrictions did not only affect the way the backpacks were distributed this year, but they also caused CVCCS to change the way backpacks and school

supplies were collected. “We were forced to look at it differently,” said Trout, who noted that in the past, area churches had collected items for the giveaway. “Each church had a list,” she recalled. “Stumptown gathered pencils and pencil boxes, and Groffdale brought erasers and pens. It worked pretty well, but (with churches not meeting), we couldn’t do it this year.” Instead, CVCCS organizers decided to hold a community event. The organization reached out via social media, newspapers, and emails to invite area residents to help Stuff the Truck with backpacks and school supplies at the Worship Center on New Holland Pike on July 25. During the low-contact event, volunteers met donors at their cars and took donated items to the truck. “It went well,” recalled Trout. “We had a steady stream of cars,

GOTR To Screen Film Focused On Anxiety Free Link To Connect Families To “Angst” BY ANN MEAD ASH

Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,”

When the 48 members of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band gathered at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, in mid-August to start practicing the fall drill, they knew camp would be a little different. “The world is different, and we are changing with the world,” said Jacob Fertal, vice president of the band, referring to the pandemic and the restrictions associated with COVID-19. The band members met from Aug. 10 to 13 to begin learning the drill to a program titled “Resilience.” Practices were also held Aug. 18 to 20 and Aug. 25 to 27. “Resilience” will be performed in three parts, beginning with “We Are Family,” moving into the ballad, which is “The Sound of Silence,” and finishing with “Daft Punk Medley.” Fertal explained how each segment of the show relates to the theme. “With everything that is going on in the world, we think a lot of resilience is needed,” he said, noting that “We Are Family” focuses on staying together to get through hard times and

that “Sound of Silence” talks about being strong enough to work out your problems. “‘Daft Punk Medley’ (includes) the words ‘harder, better, faster, and stronger’ (because) after you get through your struggles, you’re better than you were before.” Band director Paul Murr said that he and assistant director Daniel List chose the music for the drill with the uncertainty of fall in mind. “When school was shut down in March, we started thinking about how it would affect summer and fall,” he said, noting that “Resilience” was picked from about seven different ideas because it would be easier to learn and allowed for social distancing. Student director Sarah Scott noted that the drill utilizes curves and interconnecting circles and other shapes. “We move around each other and connect at different points,” she said. “A part of the band will break off from the rest and then reform into some other shape together.” High points will include a woodwind feature at the beginning of “Sound of Silence,” which will also spotlight the color guard. This year’s band has seven color guard members

variety of ways this fall, including virtually and in environments where it is safer to socially distance, the organization wanted to do more. “We feel such a sense of responsibility to the hundreds of girls we would normally have in our program this fall,” she said. “(We asked), ‘How can we reach them in a way that is important and relevant?’” Realizing the film could have an impact, GOTR chose to offer the screening. Area families who wish to register to watch the film may do so for free at www.gotr lancaster.org. A few days before the event, GOTR will send registered parties a link to the online event. In addition to the link, families will receive a discussion guide they can use to follow along. “IndieFlix has also provided pandemic tips for parents to help them deal with kids’ anxiety,” said Yohe. and then a live, half-hour discussion with approximately four panel members from related fields, such as psychology and pediatrics, will be held. Audience members will be able to submit questions to the panel. During the next two days, GOTR members and their families will have the option to watch the entire event via the link. The documentary, which was produced by IndieFlix, utilizes interviews with children and teenagers to explore the facets of anxiety and how it impacts relationships, along with offering possible solutions. Olympic athlete Michael Phelps is interviewed, as are mental health experts. “‘Angst’ opens up the conversation about anxiety,” said Yohe, who added that the film fits with the curriculum of the weekly GOTR team meetings. “ We provide a really safe space for our girls to sit and talk about their emotions and name their emotions,” she said. “When we saw this documentary, we realized that this is a (way to) engage our community in a conversation that is so important to have right now.” “The film (seeks to) normalize the conversation (about anxiety),” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “It makes it feel that it’s OK to talk about this because everyone experiences it.” Johnson noted that with teams meeting in a

In January, the organization screened “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. GOTR administration felt that this was an apt time to repeat that type of event, but this time in a virtual format. “When we have a pandemic, which we have all never experienced (before), we have to look at things differently,” said Johnson. “This needs to be part of what we do for our community.”

Wieand reached out to the 40 registered youngsters and offered a virtual program through which they learned to use earbuds and sing along with a click track. The fall session had initially been scheduled on Wednesdays, but it was moved to accommodate AWANA programs at local churches and GCC’s youth group, which will use the church building on Wednesday evenings. “We’re being very cautious and respectful of keeping kids safe,” Wieand said. “We have done a lot of planning to make sure they’re safe.” Participation in the

With all that’s going on, it’s really cool that God worked it out this way.” The theme for the spring session, scheduled for February and March 2021, will be “Created With a Purpose.” The mission of Outpour Kids is to encourage children “to create with passion, excellence, and purpose while growing in a knowledge of and a love for Jesus,” Wieand said. During the fall and spring sessions, students will learn to sing in unison and simple parts; practice singing basics such as proper breathing, diction, and posture; develop choral disciplines like watching the director and choir etiquette; and gain an understanding of worship to God and service to the church. High-quality audio and video streaming capability has been added so that worship services and the Nov. 20 performance can be broadcast into other areas of the building. This will provide capacity for choir members’ families to attend the performance. “Putting on the Full Armor of God” is the theme of the choir’s fall session. Wieand’s husband, Matt, will help to lead devotionals related to the theme, and her seventh-grade daughter, Audrey, will assist. The choir will learn three songs: an arrangement of Bethel Music’s “Raise a Hallelujah,” I Am They’s “My Feet Are on the Rock,” and an adaptation of Christy Nockels’ song “Head to Toe (The Armor of God Song).” “(Nockels’ song is) written as a lullaby to sing over a child, (but) I’ve made it into a first-person song for the kids. This year, the American Heart Association (AHA) has changed the format of the Lancaster Heart Walk. Instead of coming together for a oneday event, participants from across Lancaster County can join the Heart Walk by walking wherever they are any time during the month of September. The Lancaster Division of the AHA has named 12-yearold Titus Lingenfelter of Lancaster as the 2020 Lancaster Heart Walk Heart Hero. When Titus’ parents, Jerry and Robyn Lingenfelter, were expecting him 12 years ago, it took two ultrasounds to confirm that he had a critical congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. After he was born, he spent just days in the NICU before being sent home. Just eight weeks after entering the world, Titus underwent a life-saving surgery. While another surgery is in his future, Titus sees his doctors regularly and has been cleared to participate in regular activities, such as soccer. Titus and his family

The fundraiser for the nursing facility will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the church, located at 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata. Each meal, at a cost of $11, will include slow-roasted pulled pork with barbecue sauce, a baked potato and butter, a dinner roll, applesauce and a dessert. Preorders will be taken, and meals will be saved under the name provided when ordered. All payments are to be made when picking up the meals on Sept. 29 at Grace Point. The public is invited to purchase a meal. All proceeds will go toward supporting Mount Hope NRC. To preorder, readers may call Kris Wilson at 717-6828026 or email advancement@mthopenazarene.org by Monday, Sept. 21. Extra meals will be available while supplies last. Hope NRC.” Located in Rapho Township, Manheim, Mount Hope is a 50-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. Wilson, director of advancement, has had personal experiences with the facility. “My life has been touched by Mount Hope, as this facility beautifully cared for my mother during the last two years of her life,” she said. Mount Hope has been named a fivestar nursing facility in the county by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and is largely supported by Medicaid, which covers the costs of those who cannot afford nursing home costs on their own. “Everything in the way of donations coming into Mount Hope goes right back to the residents,” said Wilson. “We are not a fancy facility, but we are a warm, family-friendly inviting community.” Not only does Mount Hope have a history of caring for seniors in its foundational roots dating back to 1969 as the Dunkard Brethren Church Home, but Mount Hope accepts senior applicants regardless of their ability to pay for the cost of their nursing care. Nearly 50 members of the Lancaster Catholic High School marching band met at the school during three weeks in August to practice the fall drill, aptly titled “Resilience.”

LCAA from pg 12 Henrietta Holton-Thomas will offer two one-day workshops. “Experimental Wet Watercolor” will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and students will experiment with wet and loose watercolor painting techniques. In “Sculpture Workshop,” set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, students will use self-hardening clay with ceramic techniques. Novice artists will gain a better understanding of how to control watercolor and mix colors in “Beginning Watercolor,” taught by Tony Bonazzi from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays from Oct. 8 to Nov. 12. Bonazzi will also teach the “Intermediate Drawing” class, which will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Oct. 5 to Nov. 9. Students will go beyond the basics to develop their ability to draw from observation and concentrate on shape and value. As its name suggests, “Landscape Painting Plus” will encourage oil and acrylic painters to focus on landscape and incorporating figures, animals, and more into their art. Carol Herr will teach the course, held on Fridays, Oct. 2 to Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. Dot Stepenaski will lead “Passion for Pastels,” emphasizing color, values, and pastel techniques. Classes will meet on Thursdays, Sept. 17 to Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Artists who want to enjoy working outdoors in the company of others but without a formal agenda are invited to join the LCAA Fair Weather Painters group, monitored by Marita Hines. The group meets at different times and places to paint outdoors. There is no cost to participate. Interested individuals may find “LCAA Fair Weather Painters” on Facebook to learn about upcoming paint-out events. To register for classes or to join the LCAA, visit www.lcaaonline.org or call 717687-7061.

about their experiences to help encourage others. As in the past, theme days that pay homage to clothing from different decades or ask students to dress in the purple and gold school colors have been held. Although the group has dealt with a number of changes, including the cancellation of their own annual fall band showcase, Scott said that the students are

Additional student leaders are band president Freddy Arnold, wind section leader Isabella Folts, drumline section leader Alex Lopez, front ensemble section leader Lizbeth Stephan, color guard captain Katie Lyle, and sanitation coordinator Christopher Johnson.

The Board of Trustees of Lancaster Public Library recently announced that, after careful consideration, they have voted unanimously to close the Leola Branch, located at 46 Hillcrest Ave., effective immediately. The decision was made out of consideration of fiscal responsibility in the wake of the pandemic. The building is untenable for a number of reasons. First, new safety protocols required for COVID-19, such as social distancing, make the space of the Leola Branch too small to function as a public library. At

School Opens Education Center St. John Neumann Catholic School marked the first day in its new Education Center addition at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lancaster after relocating from St. Anne School in downtown Lancaster. The project provided the Catholic education facility

with nine additional classrooms, restrooms, and office support spaces. Upgrades to the west portion of the church building are designed to support the education facilities and increase security and accessibility. Select renovations to the church continue and are scheduled for completion by the end of September. A special event to celebrate the project’s completion is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24.

This fall, the SPARKS Foundation will bring science experiments and education to students, no matter what teaching format their school adopts. The foundation can easily arrange Zoom meetings between the instructors and students, but getting the materials to the students is more difficult. Single serve packages have been created so that students can follow along at school or at home. This individual packaging costs more

than the usual packaging, so the foundation is seeking additional public support. The SPARKS Foundation collects donations from individuals, companies, and foundations and turns them into hands-on science education for elementary school children. An easy way to support the foundation is with a Facebook fundraiser or through Amazon Smile. To donate through Amazon Smile, readers may visit www.smile.amazon.com and

choose SPARKS Foundation Inc. Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to the foundation. Most of the foundation’s work is in Title 1 schools, which are schools with a large concentration of low-income

students. Everything the student needs to complete the experiment is provided by the SPARKS Foundation, including a lab coat and safety goggles. To learn more, readers may visit www.sparksfoundation.org.
