hen members of the Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise were searching for a new fundraiser, after COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible to hold their Literacy Bike Ride or annual car show, they looked for something with expanded appeal. “The ride is for bike riders, and the car show is for people who like cars,” said Bill Weik, adding that the event is desgned to appeal to adults of all interests. The Fall Festival will officially be held for the first time this year on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Aberdeen Acres, 406 Aberdeen Road, Elizabethtown. The event, which is designed for adults age 21 and over, will include live music; food; beer, wine, and other beverages available for purchase; and silent and live auctions. Dillwood Band, a three-piece string band, will play from 2 to 4 p.m., and Mama Tried Band, known for soul, funk, and rock, will play from 4 to 7 p.m. Local television reporter

New Headmaster Takes Charge At Dayspring
The program for the 2021 hybrid Tapas Shindig will include presentations by executive director Alicia Corrado, director of development Janelle Esbenshade, a member of the North Star Initiative board, and radio personality Lisa Landis will serve as master of ceremonies. Esbenshade noted, however, that the most impactful presentation of the evening will be made by a human trafficking survivor. “We share out of our experience (with victims),” reflected Esbenshade, “but when you hear it firsthand (from a survivor), it’s a different experience.”

Michael Myers, founder of and Vision Ambassador for Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville, knew a time would come when he would step out of his role as headmaster. “We wanted a hand-in-glove type of transition because of the specificity of our vision with a Principle Approach school,” said Myers. “It’s so ingrained in every part (of what we do).” See Dayspring pg 6

Meredith Jorgensen will serve as master of ceremonies. A variety of fall-themed food items will be a focus of the event, with Michelle Gilbert of Gilby’s Café serving as chef. “We will be smoking the pork and the beef brisket ourselves, and there will be homemade smoked mac and cheese,” said Weik. “Who am I?” might be one of life’s biggest questions. Some people believe that getting to know themselves requires discovering their roots because knowing their history and culture helps them construct their individual identities. It can also enable them to build a sense of pride. One of the early advocates for a Mennonite historical society in Lancaster County was pastor and farmer Ira D. Landis. The first meeting of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society was held in May 1958. Eleven years later, the society purchased the Hans Herr House. Built in 1719 by Christian and Anna Herr, the Herr House is not only the oldest surviving house in Lancaster County, but it is also known as the oldest original Mennonite meeting house in the Western Hemisphere. Restoration and archaeological excavation on the house began in 1971, and the site was officially opened to the public in 1974. Since the 1990s, the Lancaster Mennonite Historical

More than three years ago, the organization began operating The Harbor, known as Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. This year’s fundraiser for North Star Initiative will be held at Warehouse 100, 100 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Friday, Oct. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. North Star did not hold the annual fundraiser in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year a larger venue will allow for more attendees to stand at high-top tables enjoying tapas and mocktails if they so choose. CV Volleyball Records Mixed Results
BY LEAH SINTIC
Split results brought CV volleyball’s record to 2-1 midway through last week, registering their first loss at Warwick after blanking Cedar Crest the week before. Warwick proved to be a formidable opponent, and the Lady Bucks dropped their first contest on the Warriors court in a back-andforth battle that went to five games (13-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19, 15-7). CV had upper hand early on led by 17 kills from Madison Williams and Summer Getz who put up 36 assists and a pair of aces.
The Warriors pulled together some late game momentum despite strong defensive efforts from CV’s Emily Kornacki (19 digs) and five blocks from Camdyn Mahler. On September 9th, the Bucks took control of their 3-0 win over Cedar Crest, jumping out to a 25-11 first game win. Though Crest tightened things up after that, CV still got the job done in three (25-11, 25-19, 25-23). “I was pleased to see us put together a complete match,” noted head coach Devin Moore. “It was good to see the team implementing some of the out of system work and
attacking options with our pins and middles.” Becca Hartranft powered eight kills and Getz added 21 assists. Rhiannon Henry collected six aces in the win. Kornacki provided 11 digs and Jordyn Hironimus added a pair of blocks. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team reached a 1-1 stalemate against Hempfield last week, their second draw of the season, in addition to picking up a win over Warwick. Eighty minutes of regulation and two overtime extensions was not enough to settle the row between CV and Hempfield last Tuesday. Both teams scored in the first half but were unable repeat that success before the extended minutes expired. Mae Linder propelled the shot that deflected off a Hempfield defender and into the netting for CV’s tally. On the opposite end of the field, Riley Houck collected nine saves. The club celebrated their first win of the season on the 10th with a 1-0 victory over the Warwick. Delainey Varela-Keen netted the game-winner burying a PK to put the Bucks ahead, and the CV defense staved off the Warwick offense, anchored by sophomore keeper Erin Figart with five saves. CROSS COUNTRY Last Tuesday’s quad match at Manheim Township boasted two wins for the CV girls’ team and one for the boys.
The girls raced to victory over Ephrata and Solanco, only succumbing to Township in the team rankings. Township runners accounted for seven of the top 10, but Kylynn Frankford broke up the pack with her seventh-place finish and a time of 22:07 to lead the CV effort. Seana Dougherty also raced her way into the top 10 with her time of 22:25 to place 10th. Abigail Zook and Kylee Antrim crossed back-toback in 14th and 15th respectively. In the boys’ race, the Bucks captured a win over Ephrata led by a second-place performance from Emmanuel Gitonga (17:24). Timothy Gitonga clocked CV’s next best time at 18:43 to place 11th. BOYS’ SOCCER CV boys’ soccer suffered losses to Hempfield and Warwick but look to turn things around with the mid-season matchups just around the corner. Luke Snader gathered five saves during a 3-0 loss while hosting Hempfield on Tuesday September 14th. Four days prior, David Irwin netted CV’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Warwick on the road, while Caden Bredeman provided Irwin with the assist. FOOTBALL On the 10th, CV hosted Lampeter-Strasburg for the annual Lampeter Bowl and after a 19-0 slide in favor of the Pioneers the trophy went home with L-S. Defense was the name of the game and L-S managed to post their

second consecutive shutout in addition to retaining possession of the trophy. L-S picked up their first six points in the second quarter nudging Jonathan Mellinger into the end zone on one of two 1-yard run TDs for the night. The Bucks managed to block the PAT, and the scoreboard remained unaltered at 6-0 until the Pioneers ran in two more short trips to the end zone in the fourth. Kneisley threw eight completions for 53 yards. FIELD HOCKEY After a 3-1 loss to Manheim Township last Monday, CV rebounded with a 4-1 win over Hempfield two days later to start their league schedule with split results. In Wednesday’s win over the Knights, the scoring didn’t get underway until the second quarter, but once it did, the CV attack was steady and diversified, with all four goals coming from a different Buckskin stick. Lillian Buckwalter opened with her second quarter goal and Mikyla FREE U Rineer netted hers in the third. Sydwith m niform ember ney Weaver and Alaina Culbert each ship notched a fourth quarter tally, while Weaver and Ellie Hershey were credited with assists. allowed the club to keep pace in the first half. Stauffer secured four saves in the loss. GOLF Last Wednesday’s six-team match at Foxchase resulted in a second-place finish for CV with a team total of 365, just behind Solanco (343), and ahead of Elizabethtown (366), Garden Spot (367), Manheim Central (405), and Ephrata (432). Carson Hoover led CV, carding an 83 to finish third overall. Miles Jackson was just two strokes back with an 85, Nate Kirchner put together an 88-stroke effort, and Ethan Tardibuono contributed a 109. TENNIS CV tennis blanked Warwick for a mid-week highlight that improved their league record to 2-2, after slipping behind Cedar Crest earlier in the week. To claim the 6-0 win, sisters Jenna and Megan Rychener paired for an 8-6 doubles win. Keyshla Baez and Savanna Burkholder won 8-4, and Nicole Fidler and Ella Turoczi added an 8-3 victory. Burkholder and both Rycheners went on to earn singles points to complete the sweep. Though last Monday’s clash against the Falcon’s went 5-2 to Cedar Crest, J. Rychener and Burkholder worked their way to victories in singles action. Rychener took down her opponent in straight sets (6-1, 6-3), and Burkholder made a comeback surge after dropping the first set to earn her point (3-6, 6-4, 10-3).
