Covering Each School In Prayer BY ANN MEAD ASH
If the words “moms in prayer” calls forth a picture of mothers of schoolage children meeting in a church on a weekday morning with Bibles in hand … well, one of the many Moms in Prayer groups in the area might fit that model, but it would be only a small portion of the reality. “We don’t fit inside a box,” said Sue Forry, regional coordinator for Lancaster, Lebanon, & Berks Counties Moms in Prayer International. Forry went on to
note that groups are not necessarily church based. “We have groups for preschool moms, for mothers of children with special needs, and we have college and career groups,” said Forry. As schools begin to open up again - in a variety of formats, including public, private, cyber, homeschool, and hybrid models - Moms in Prayer groups are finding creative ways to meet - virtually or together with masks and social distancing or in Forry’s favorite format, porch praying. “We do social distancing on a See Moms In Prayer pg 7

Deborah’s Circle Forms At Temple Shaarai Shomayim
About three years ago, Rosanne Selfon, former president of the international Women of Reformed Judaism, wanted to see a group of women at Temple Shaarai Shomayim take part in a pilot program of women helping women. While that program did not quite take off, Selfon was not ready to give up, and that determination resulted in significant contributions to two local nonprofit organizations. “About 18 months ago, we decided to try it again,” said Selfon, who co-chaired the group with Gail Sterman of Willow Valley Communities. “We started to talk,” said Selfon, who noted that Sterman was newly
arrived from Jacksonville, Fla., at the time. “(Sterman) was very familiar with women’s collective giving. She had experience with it.” The two began to brainstorm. “We started thinking about what we had to do to make it work … and we laid out a plan,” said Selfon. Part of that plan was to make the group affordable. “We wanted to try to build this up within the temple community,” explained Selfon, who noted that Temple Shaarai Shomayim Rabbi Jack Paskoff puts an emphasis on charity and good deeds. “We do a lot of that, but we thought this would be something women specifically could get involved in,” Selfon said. According to Selfon, women’s

philanthropy is growing by leaps and bounds, and she and Sterman saw that it was time for women in Lancaster to join the movement. “We wanted our women to come to understand the ability they have with their own money to give and make decisions about how that money is given,” she said. “They can determine to whom it is given and for what.” A small group began meeting in the fall of 2019, giving themselves the name Deborah’s Circle. “We liked Deborah because she was smart and strategic - a general and a judge,” said Selfon of the character from the Torah. She added that the concept of a circle was added because life revolves in a never-ending circle. The group’s mission is to
The pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. Scot Ash, general manager of Shady Maple RV in East Earl, has seen a 50% increase in sales over 2019, and he said that the majority

Contract To Aid Farmers, Families
R063446
During a visit to Sauder’s Eggs on Aug. 13, Russell Redding, Pennsylvania’s agriculture secretary, announced a $10 million contract with Feeding Pennsylvania. The contract will acquire surplus agriculture products from Pennsylvania producers to be funneled through the charitable food system to put fresh, local foods into the hands of Pennsylvanians in need. This is $10 million in relief for Pennsylvania farmers who have lost markets but have not swayed in their commitment to nourishing the commonwealth. The funds will help fresh, local food be distributed to families who were unsure of where their next meal would come from.

The group that started with about six women around a table eventually grew to 17. Then, everything changed. “COVID came,” recalled Selfon, who noted that after that the group met via computer, determined to continue what they had started. A steering committee comprised of Selfon, Sterman, Robin Adler, Linda Hirsch, Nancy Kurland, Risa Paskoff, and Joan Sherman formed, and Deborah’s Circle kept meeting virtually. “We needed to determine more about who we were and what we were going to be,” said Selfon, who noted that the group set member contributions at $10 per month or $120 a year. In the throes of COVID-19 restrictions, the group had amassed about $2,000. “Originally, we were going to investigate some agencies and ask leaders to come and talk to us about needs,” said Selfon, who noted that COVID-19 restrictions stymied that plan. It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. EPC has not been immune to the tough decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks, encompassing the entire coverage area. While you will not receive the printed edition each week, we invite you to visit us online at townlively.com/read and sign up for our weekly email newsletters for fresh content EVERY WEEK. EASY HOMEMADE GRANOLA BARS - 5 cups old fashioned oats - 2 tsp. vanilla extract - 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter - 1/2 cup salt - 2/3 cup Golden Barrel Light Brown Sugar - 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut - 1/2 cup Honey - 1/2 cup chocolate chips - 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter Preheat oven to 350o F. Prepare a 9x13” pan with parchment paper, sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. Spread oats (and if using nuts) on a baking sheet. of those sales involved firsttime buyers. “RVing is an alternative way to travel that allows families to social distance while traveling and while camping,” said Ash, who pointed out that campers have their own beds, baths, and cooking and eating facilities traveling with them. “It keeps the family unit together,” said Ash. However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCO-area residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga County, and Jessica’s favorite, Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of
pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially on the lookout for rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes, but she has also seen bear, elk, fishers (which are similar to weasels or minks), foxes, coyotes, elk, deer, and flying squirrels. “You didn’t mention porcupines,” added Laura. Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a bear foraged ahead of them, continually stopping to look back before disappearing into the brush. She also recalled stepping on a rattlesnake on the Quehanna Trail. Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her husband, Gene, of Terre Hill, graduated from a tent to a hybrid camper a few years ago, but she still prefers cooking over an outdoor fire to using the stove in her camper. Caledonia State Park. She was introduced to a book called “Roughing It Easy” by Diane Thomas, where she learned how to make a stove from a tuna can, corrugated paper, and paraffin and to cook eggs and bacon in a paper sack. “You can cook cheaply over the fire,” said Kim, who currently cooks meals in foil pouches and mixes up pancake batter before leaving home so it’s ready to pour at the campsite. “ We make breakfast burritos so we don’t need utensils,” said Kim, who noted that the smoky smell of a campfire is a delight to her. “There’s something about … being in the outdoors and smelling the fire,” she said. “I like the smell.” New Holland resident Steve Loewen bought his “toy hauler” camper several years ago and converted the area where motorcycles would be stored into a bed. His wheelchair glides easily up the ramp originally intended for all-terrain vehicles. “I’m not your regular camper,” said Loewen. “I go camping because … I have all my (equipment) with me.” Loewen noted that 90% of his camping expeditions are tied to his love of car racing. He also enjoys the relationships he has developed with other race fans. “I see the same people every year, because we reserve the same (camp sites).” For those who are not sure See Camping pg 9

August 2020 was not the first time Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), located at 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, held a backpack giveaway for Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) students, but it was the first time backpacks were distributed drive-through style. “This year, with COVID, we were forced to look at it differently,” said Angela Trout, director of advancement with CVCCS, who reported that the organization gave away more than 100 backpacks during two distributions held Aug. 12 and 19. To facilitate the distributions, families that are connected to the ministry through the CVCCS food bank were invited to register for one of the two pickup times. Information concerning the number of students and grade level - elementary, middle, or high school was ascertained. During the pickup, a CVCCS representative would ask for the students’ names. “(Our) list may say (a family has) an elementary

GOTR To Screen Film Focused On Anxiety Families To “Angst” BY ANN MEAD ASH

Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,” she said. To address that anxiety and provide a service to Lancasterarea GOTR members, the organization is providing a free link to the film “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety” Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 8 to 10. The initial live event will begin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8. “The GOTR team will open up the evening by sharing our mission and our reasons for

hosting this event,” said Yohe. Following the opener, the 56minute documentary will be shown, and then a live, halfhour discussion with approximately four panel members from related fields, such as psychology and pediatrics, will be held. Audience members will be able to submit questions to the panel. During the next two days, GOTR members and their families will have the option to watch the entire event via the link. The documentary, which was produced by IndieFlix, utilizes interviews with children and teenagers to explore the facets of anxiety and how it impacts relationships, along with offering possible solutions. Olympic athlete Michael Phelps is interviewed, as are mental health experts. “‘Angst’ opens up the conversation about anxiety,” said Yohe, who added that the film fits with the curriculum of the weekly GOTR team

anxiety),” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “It makes it feel that it’s OK to talk about this because everyone experiences it.” Johnson noted that with teams meeting in a variety of ways this fall, including virtually and in environments where it is safer to socially distance, the organization wanted to do more. “We feel such a sense of responsibility to the hundreds of girls we would normally have in our program this fall,” she said. “(We asked), ‘How can we reach them in a way that is important and relevant?’” Realizing the film could have an impact, GOTR chose to offer the screening. Area families who wish to register to watch the film may do so for free at www.gotr lancaster.org. A few days before the event, GOTR will send registered parties a link to the online event. In addition to the link, families will receive a discussion guide they can use to follow along. “IndieFlix has also provided pandemic tips for parents to help them deal with kids’ anxiety,” said Yohe. Because there are only a limited number of links available, organizers encourage GOTR members and families to register early. Sponsorships are being sought, and opportunities to donate will be offered at registration. “We are calling this a Thoughtful Fundraiser,” noted Yohe. This is not the first time GOTR has offered a film on a culturally significant topic with a panel discussion to its members and families. In January, the organization screened “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. GOTR administration felt that this was an apt time to repeat that type of event, but this time in a virtual format. “When we have a pandemic, which we have all never experienced (before), we have to look at things differently,” said Johnson. “This needs to be part of what we do for our community.”

dropped off and picked up securely without adults needing to enter the building. Additionally, the church has been equipped for socially distanced seating. High-quality audio and video streaming capability has been added so that worship services and the Nov. 20 performance can be broadcast into other areas of the building. This will provide capacity for choir members’ families to attend the performance. “Putting on the Full Armor of God” is the theme of the choir’s fall session. Wieand’s husband, Matt, will help to lead devotionals related to the theme, and her seventh-grade daughter, Audrey, will assist. The choir will learn three songs: an arrangement of Bethel Music’s “Raise a Hallelujah,” I Am They’s “My Feet Are on the Rock,” and an adaptation of Christy Nockels’ song “Head to Toe (The Armor of God Song).” “(Nockels’ song is) written as a lullaby to sing over a child, (but) I’ve made it into a

compiled into a group performance that was posted online. “We were pleased we had the ability to offer something,” Wieand commented, adding that she recognized that students were burnt out by virtual learning, so the decreased participation was not unexpected. Now that in-person gatherings are permitted if organized correctly, Wieand is once again excited to host an Outpour Kids program at GCC, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. The Outpour Kids Children’s Community Worship Choir will meet on seven Thursday evenings from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12, with a final dress rehearsal and performance on Friday, Nov. 20. The fall session had initially been scheduled on Wednesdays, but it was moved to accommodate AWANA programs at local churches and GCC’s youth group, which will use the church building on Wednesday evenings. “We’re being very cautious and respectful of keeping kids safe,” Wieand said. “We have done a lot of planning to make sure they’re safe.” Participation in the children’s choir is open to all students in first through sixth grades, with a maximum of 40 participants. A waitlist will be created when the choir is full. Rehearsals will be held in a large classroom, with the floor marked to indicate where students may sit or stand. first-person song for the kids. I hope it’s a song that comes to their minds when they’re facing challenges,” Wieand said. “It’s totally a God thing that this theme was chosen last year. With all that’s going on, it’s really cool that God worked it out this way.” The theme for the spring session, scheduled for February and March 2021, will be “Created With a Purpose.” The mission of Outpour Kids is to encourage children “to create with passion, excellence, and purpose while growing in a knowledge of and a love for Jesus,” Wieand said. During the fall and spring sessions, students will learn to sing in unison and simple parts; practice singing basics such as proper breathing, diction, and posture; develop choral disciplines like watching the director and choir etiquette; and gain an understanding of worship to God and service to the church. There is a cost per student to participate in the fall session. Family discounts are not offered, but scholarships are available for those with financial need. Wednesday, Sept. 30, is the deadline to register. Readers may visit www.gccws.net/outpourkids to learn more about the program and to register. The building is untenable for a number of reasons. First, new safety protocols required for COVID-19, such as social distancing, make the space of the Leola Branch too small to function as a public library. At the same time, the Lancaster City and Mountville branches are larger and can operate with
more safety measures in place. Second, the move of the Upper Leacock Township offices and eventual sale of the building means that the library’s continued use of the space is uncertain. Without the funds to move to a different, larger location, the board decided to close the branch. Leola patrons’ home library will automatically transition to the Lancaster City Branch at 125 N.
