Forgotten Friend To Offer Virtual Reptile Shows Scholarship Fund Can Help Provide Programs For Students BY ANN MEAD ASH

Market manager Annaruth Diller invites people to visit the Ephrata Farm and Art Market open Saturdays through October.

Market Benefits Ephrata Farm And Art Market Open Through October

When COVID-19 restrictions hit, businesses with services related to live entertainment lost business. Brian Gilpin, owner of Illusion Sound and Lighting of Ephrata, was among them. Looking to diversify, Gilpin contacted business acquaintance Annaruth Diller in mid-July. ByJuly 25, Diller had organized Ephrata Farm and Art Market, which is now held each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1185 Division Highway (Route 322), Ephrata - Gilpin’s place of business. “We’re still growing as people become more aware of (the market),” said Diller on a recent Saturday when about a dozen vendors had set up awnings at the spot. “Normally we have about 18 vendors,” noted Diller. Vendors are located on the west side of the

building, with parking on the right. “The chicken barbecue is here weekly,” said Diller, referring to the origin of a pleasant aroma from the stand located closest to Route 322. Other food vendors include two bakers, and some stands carry produce. “We have artists who are here every week,” Diller noted. Vendors who sell knitted items such as hats, scarves, and shawls are on-site alongside jewelry crafters, and makers of home décor. Jewelry vendors - both handmade and home business representatives also take part in the market. Diller listed makers of floral arrangements, soaps, spices, and woodcrafts among other vendors who have taken part. Beginning Sept. 19, a percentage of market proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay

For Life. The benefit will continue through the end of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “The more vendors set up, the more donation,” said Sharon Harsh, a member of the Misfits on a Mission Relay team. “Of course, we want shoppers to stop out (too),” added Harsh, who will have a table set up at the market to benefit the American Cancer Society. “We will have gift baskets, earrings, as well as (chances) to win cash.” Looking ahead, Diller said the market is hoping to offer monster truck rides before the venue closes for the year following the Oct. 31 market. “We plan to open up again in April 2021,” said Diller. Readers who would like to learn more may search for “Ephrata Farm And Art Market” on Facebook or Instagram.

“The kids get to meet some of the same animals (as a live show), but they get to meet some different animals as well,” said Jesse Rothacker, founder and president of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary in ManSee Forgotten Friend pg 3 heim, who pointed out that Gila monsters have been part of all the virtual programs the organization has done since COVID-19 restrictions kept him from doing live shows. Rothacker sees benefits in the change. “We don’t usually bring venomous lizards, but now that we’re doing it virtually, (students) can be up close to the nose of a Gila monster and actually see the beady texture of their skin without liability or concern for the schools or teachers.” To allow Rothacker to Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary holds a Gila monster in front of the greenscreen he uses for virtual presentations.

Forgotten Friend from pg 1 Rothacker may tackle weightier subjects. The saga Rothacker calls “Our Virtual Journey began when the state was shut down by COVID-19 restrictions in March. “May through September is our main season for programs, said Rothacker, who noted that of 200 yearly shows, about 150 occur in spring and summer. “Our season was crushed, he said. The situation sent Rothacker on a mission to provide contact-free safe options that will give the schools some of the tools they need for environmental science supplements that include classroom visitors. Rothacker was initially hesitant to go virtual, but he moved forward, investing in lighting, a greenscreen, and other electronic equipment, and he soon began to recognize the power of virtual

According to Rothacker, virtual shows are similar to live shows, but they offer an additional multimedia presentation. Different programs are developed for high school and college-age students. “I take a program and present it differently to each audience, said Rothacker. “With elementary or preschool, it is heavier on interactive hand motions and repeating words. For older students,

the organization instituted the Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary Scholarship Fund in 2019. Rothacker reported that the fund was initiated by grants from Refreshing Mountain Camp and Ephrata National Bank. Rothacker explained that as a nonprofit that serves nonprofits, the scholarship fund could benefit organizations such as schools, churches, and Scouting groups, for which the up to $400 pricetag of a Forgotten Friends program could be an issue. “We aren’t $1,000, but we aren’t $50, said Rothacker, who noted that the main revenue source for the rescue is programming. “ We have so many good groups that want to host our programs, he said. “Let’s Chew on It.” In “Love Bird,” that section includes seven questions, such as “How would you feel if someone was rude to you?” and “The next time someone is unkind to you, how could you respond?” The book also includes a Bible verse, a short prayer, and a theme song. The “Fruit Fables” series was written with encouragement from Weaver’s brother, who overheard her telling her then 3-year-old son Tyler a bedtime story. Some time later when she was caring for a nephew who had cancer, she found herself exhausted, but struggling to sleep. “I couldn’t turn my head off,” recalled Weaver, who began writing stories to help herself calm down. After her nephew passed away, Weaver looked over the stories she had written. “They were all using animals to unpack a lesson,” she said, adding that she realized she had the makings of a series on the Fruits of the Spirit. Around the same time, she began talking to other local writers, and she attended a 2015 Christian writers’ conference in Hershey. Following

the conference, she took a year to work on other projects, but in 2016, she returned to pitch the books for publication. Although Weaver had interest from a publisher, she ultimately decided to publish through her own company, which she named Haste Laud based on the words in the song “What Child Is This?” “Jesus said, ‘If I am lifted up, I will draw men unto Me,’” explained Weaver. “That’s our job. The whole point is to bring Him glory, and He will do work in people’s hearts.” To illustrate the book, Weaver turned to a childhood friend she knew was a capable artist. “I met my illustrator at church camp when I was 11,” recalled Weaver. “I hired him not seeing anything he had done since middle school.” Cody Wood is known as an animation artist, and he has been featured on Cartoon Network, but he switched hats for his first book illustration, winning Weaver’s praise. Weaver plans to feature herself and Wood on her website, where they will read the book

together, talk about the questions, and even sing the song. “Isn’t that fun?” Weaver asked. “People can meet the author and the illustrator on the site.” Weaver agreed that the appeal of the book is broader than the Christian market and that the lesson of kindness is especially timely. “We learn through stories,” she said. “We are opened to truth through stories.” More information about “Fruit Fables” is available under “Books” at www.shelleenweaver.com.

stories she was telling her own children. “Love Bird,” recommended for children ages 4 to 8, will be the first book of nine based on the biblical Fruits of the Spirit. It tells the tale of a squirrel family that notices a new neighbor above their home in the oak tree. When they go to introduce themselves, the neighbor, who is a bird, rudely chatters right back at them. During the night, the family hears the bird offending all its neighbors. Quickly, a meeting is called, and the animals decide to only speak kind words to the offensive bird, causing him to return kind words back to them. “When you choose to love this way, you may see it returned to you,” said Weaver, who added, “(The book is) teaching that love is sometimes a choice you will yourself to carry out. It’s an action, and it’s hard work.” Weaver explained that the stories are meant to teach. “Because I am a mom, the moral of the story is ... if I am going to work to be creative like that, you’re going to get a lesson,” she said. Conestoga Valley’s Megan Rychener (left) and Jenna Rychener paired up to play the Blue Streaks’ Julia Briner Jessica Chen played number two sinand Camille Henneman at number two doubles in the Buckskins’ 7-0 Section One loss at Manheim Township gles for the Buckskins during their 7-0 loss in last Tuesday’s Section One last Tuesday. match at Manheim Township.

With preseason training underway and new health and safety measures implemented, Conestoga Valley fall athletics were on the cusp of their competitive agenda when a schoolwide closure, spanning September 12-23, brought everything grinding to a halt. The closure delayed the official start date of the majority of varsity sports, leaving only tennis and golf able to compete before the unfortunate hiatus and wreaking havoc on all schedules. TENNIS The Lady Bucks faced a formidable early lineup, pitted against undefeated Hempfield and Manheim Township in their first two duals, succumbing to 70 losses, but turned things around last week when the squad claimed back-to-back contests to level their record at 2-2. On Thursday, the club hosted McCaskey and tallied their first league triumph, cruising away with all points up for grabs, registering a 7-0 win over the Red Tornados. Each of the Buckskins representing at singles, Ellie Kready, Jessica Chen, Jenna Rychener, and Imaan Rana made quick work of their opponents winning their points in straight sets. The storyline was similar in doubles action with wins from Kready/Chen (8-1), and J. Rychener/Megan Rychener (8-0), and a point by forfeit at No. Three doubles for Rana and Jenna Yingling. “We are trying to learn from every match, and even every point and game,” explained head coach Dale Gregg. “With a very limited set of practice days, this group has found strength and confidence from each other.” CV’s first taste of victory came one day prior, when the Bucks

topped nonleague opponent, Cocalico, 5.5-1.5. The Bucks picked up points in all four singles bouts with twoset victories for Kready, Chen, and Rana, while J. Rychener earned the half point at No. Three singles (6-1, 3-3), when her showdown against Cocalico’s Amren Stoner had to be called due to darkness. Doubles action also proved to be successful for two of the CV pairs, with Kready and Chen teaming up for an 8-1 victory, while Rana was joined by Yingling and the duo edged ahead for a 9-8 triumph. “They are maximizing their opportunities each time they are on the court and pursuing their best efforts with each opportunity,” praised Gregg. “They are eager to get better and are extraordinarily supportive of their teammates.”

GOLF Unlike those sports that have yet to get started, the golf regular season has already come and gone, with the Buckskins earning an overall record of 6-10. The abbreviated schedule forced upon them by the closure cost the Bucks the opportunity to compete in two of the regular season Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two matches, but the team made the most of the three occasions they were granted, picking up six wins, the first collective victories for a CV golf club since 2017. Consistently hanging on to fourth place in the six-team showdowns, the Buckskins garnered a pair of triumphs over Ephrata and Manheim Central in each of their three matches, while Garden Spot, Elizabethtown, and Solanco maintained a lock on the top three spots.

their best collaborative effort in a September 3 showdown at Honeybrook Golf Club, registering a 387 and hanging in with the top contenders, Garden Spot (330), Elizabethtown (343), and Solanco (359). Sophomore Carson Hoover, paced the Buckskin squad all season long, dependably carding the team’s low score, including an 85-stroke, fifth-place performance at Tanglewood Manor’s course on September 10. That performance also served to reserve him a spot at the LL League Tournament. Hoover went on to yield a 100 at the tournament, held at Meadia Heights Golf Club on September 21, claiming a tied 46th place of the 69 participants. Earning the number two Buckskin rank during the regular season was freshman Myles

he’ll be one to watch in the coming years. Jackson’s debut contest at Iron Valley resulted in a 96-stroke effort, a score he only improved upon in subsequent matches registering a 94 at Honeybrook and 92 at Tanglewood. Nate Kirchner was a solid Buckskin contributor this season, and produced his season best at the Tanglewood match, where his 99-stroke performance earned him the third best CV score. Robbie Jack experienced a similar season best with his own 99 and third ranked finish at Honeybrook. The squad will say goodbye to four senior athletes, Gavin Fisher, Robbie Jack, Luke Rumbaugh, and Gavin Winkelspecht. Head coach Matthew Brubaker described the graduating foursome as

“fun, motivated, and respectful.” “The returning players really put in work in the offseason,” Brubaker noted. “I couldn’t ask for a better group to work with. I was disappointed our season was cut short, because I would have liked to spend more time with the seniors and the rest of the team,” he added. Despite the delays and obstacles facing each one of the varsity athletic teams, the CV squads are forging ahead with determination, eager to get back into action and start building momentum. Football opened Section Two play against Warwick while volleyball, field hockey, boy’s and girl’s soccer, and cross country all anticipate their competitive calendar to kick off on Thursday, October 1st.

ARRIVING LATE?

Mulberry Art Studios will feature two new exhibits from Thursday, Oct. 1, to Saturday, Oct. 31. “Wanderlust,” a collection of pieces inspired by painter Antoinette SaponeMcMillan’s travels to Ireland in the summer of 2019, will be exhibited in the Louise Gallery. Marion Weachter, an acrylic painter and member of the Lititz Art Association, will showcase her animal-themed artwork in “Animals of the Rainbow ” in the North Gallery. Both exhibits will also be displayed in Mulberry’s Online Gallery. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions and in an effort to keep the community both healthy and involved in the arts, Mulberry Art Studios has several different ways for the public to experience the artwork of “ Wanderlust” and “Animals of the Rainbow.”

Guests may make an appointment to view the artwork in person by calling the gallery at 717-295-1949 or emailing the gallery curator at Stephanie.MulberryArt@gmail .com, and April or Stephanie will work with guests to find a time for them to come in. All of the artwork from the exhibit will also be available for viewing at www.mulberryartstudios.com. Pieces can be purchased online, in person, or over the phone. The gallery will hold the purchased artwork until the buyer is able to pick it up, or the gallery will make arrangements for shipment or delivery, if possible. Born and raised in Lancaster, Sapone-McMillan is a selftaught artist who works mainly with acrylics and leans toward the abstract. She not only paints on canvas and

paper, but she also uses repurposed tiles to make original hand-painted coasters and magnets. She was one of the many local artists who participated in a three-part blog series, “Making Art in the Time of COVID,” by Ashley Kendrick. Sapone-McMillan’s painting “ Wild Daisies of Inishbofin” was featured in the August issue of Lancaster County Magazine. Weachter was born and raised in West Willow and moved to Manheim in 2012. As a child, she always loved art and grew up with the intent of attending art school. Instead, she pursued other activities, including raising her children. She returned to art after the loss of both her parents and her spouse in

2011 and 2012. She attended a paint night in 2015, where she used acrylics for the first time. This experience reignited her interest in art, and she continued to learn by attending more paint nights and viewing art tutorials online. She found that painting helped her to deal with her grief. For “Animals of the Rainbow,” Weachter focused on joyful, colorful animals. She said she was inspired by the Bible story of Noah’s ark. Mulberry Art Studios is located in historic downtown Lancaster at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., and free parking is available in the studio’s private lot. For more information, readers may visit www.mulberryartstudios.com or call 717-295-1949.

In collaboration with Carnegie Hall, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is participating in the Link Up program The Orchestra Rocks, a music education program provided by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI), during the 2020-21 season. The nearly 5,500 students participating in Link Up will participate in a virtual culminating concert in May 2021 where they will sing and play the recorder or the violin with the orchestra from home. This performance often serves as students’ first concert experience and provides them with the opportunity to apply the musical concepts they have studied. For more than 30 years, Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades three through five at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum. Link Up provides a free, yearlong curriculum that teachers can implement, along with classroom materials, online video and audio resources, and the professional development and support necessary to make the program an engaging experience for students. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is one of 120 national and international organizations chosen for this program. Since 2003, Carnegie Hall has partnered with professional, community, and university orchestras across the U.S. and around the world to support their existing education programs and strengthen their partnerships with local schools. In the 202021 season, Link Up will partner with sites in the U.S., as well as in China, Canada, Colombia, Spain, Kenya, New Zealand, and Japan, to serve approximately 450,000 students and teachers globally. Readers may visit www.carnegiehall.org/LinkUp for a complete list of participants and further details. To register a school or student to participate in Link Up, readers may visit www.lancaster symphony.org/education/music -discovery-experience/. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, Oct. 14. Additional information is available by visiting www.lancaster symphony.org, searching for Lancaster Symphony Orchestra on social media, or calling the organization’s offices at 717-291-6440, ext. 303.

High View Welcomes New Pastor, Offers Community Meals A lifelong member of Assembly of God (AG) churches, Mark Thiboldeaux never expected he would pastor a congregation in a different denomination, but the Lord has a way of surprising people. Mark grew up in north Philadelphia and earned a bachelor’s degree in Bible from Valley Forge Christian College. He held youth pastor positions in New Jersey and in Berwick before accepting the role of senior pastor at Strasburg Assembly of God. “When I took it over, it was getting ready to close. I built it back up, but life happened, and we didn’t recover from the 2008 recession, Mark said, adding that the last year was particularly difficult. The church held its final worship service in May 2019. For the rest of 2019, Mark wrestled with what to do next. He considered taking a break from pastoring, and he and his wife, Julie, discussed moving to Israel so he could concentrate on the teaching tour business he joined in 2017. In December 2019, a colleague at the Charles Snyder Funeral Home, where Mark has worked as a chaplain since 2010, suggested he consider applying to fill the pastoral vacancy at

High View Church of God (COG), 2470 Leaman Road, Strasburg. Mark declined the candidacy but agreed to serve as interim pastor. “There were too many doctrinal hurdles and the worship styles were too different, Mark explained. Two days after Christmas 2019, Mark and Julie left for Israel, spending two weeks relaxing and discerning God’s will. When they returned to Strasburg, Mark began working at High View, primarily just as a preacher for worship services. In April, the pastoral candidate the church was pursuing withdrew his name from consideration, and the church board asked Mark if he would consider staying. To abide by COG regulations, the congregation filed for a waiver so the interim pastor could become the fulltime pastor. Mark and the elders also had a long conversation about beliefs and traditions, and he ultimately traded his AG pastoral credentials for COG credentials. “We decided that we would focus on the things we agreed upon, Mark said. Mark enrolled in a religious global studies program at Liberty University School of Divinity in January. As part of the master’s degree work, he was required to evaluate church life, so he

looked at High View. “I saw some very excellent foundational things at the church, but outreach was a gap. They really wanted that to change, Mark recalled. A prime opportunity was presented with the arrival of the novel coronavirus. Church members dropped off meals to people affected by the virus, whether physically or economically. Then a friend of the church gave a significant financial gift that the church has opted to use to support community meals. Beginning on Oct. 7, the meals will be held on the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. free of charge. Registration is not required. Although the church lacks a commercial kitchen, the meals will be prepared under Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture guidelines and will include catered aspects from a local restaurant. A “parenting toolbox class will follow the meals at 7 p.m. Child care will be provided. Everyone who attends the meals may receive bags of nonperishable foods and gift cards to a local market.

Mark Thiboldeaux

The new outreach is a practical way that High View is carrying out the message of Matthew 25, which Mark is currently preaching through. “It’s a basic way of caring for those who are hungry, thirsty, naked, in prison, or foreigners, he said. Worship services are held on Sundays at 10:15 a.m., Sunday school meets at 9 a.m., and Bible studies take place on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Prerecorded audio messages for worship at home are posted at www.hvcog.org. For more information about High View and the community meals, readers may call the church at 717687-0523.
