Fighting Hunger Here And Around The World BY ANN MEAD ASH

eorge Weaver and Krisana Poontajak, two of the organizers of the New Holland Area CROP Hunger Walk, are looking for a few good recruiters. “All we need is a coordinator from a church to get behind (CROP Walk),” said Weaver. Poontajak explained, “We need a recruiter from each church to ask church members to walk, and then the walkers ask for sponsors.” After the event was held virtually in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns, the 2021 CROP Hunger Walk will be held in person. A virtual option is available this year as well. The New Holland/Leola in-person event will begin at the New Holland Memorial Community Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Sunday, Oct. 17. The walk will leave the Rotary Pavilion at 1:30 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the park at 1 p.m. to complete the registration process. Walkers may walk up to 3 miles following a route

G

New Holland CROP Walk Planned through Garden Spot Village (GSV). CROP Walks have been in existence nationwide for 52 years, and the greater New Holland area has been participating for 44 years. Several local churches are taking part, including Cedar Grove, St. John Center Lutheran, Garden Spot Community Church, and Trinity Lutheran, all in New Holland, as well as Leola United Methodist and Zion Lutheran in Leola. CROP Walks are sponsored by Church World Service (CWS). According to CWS, CROP Walk funds help transform communities by bringing food and water to people in need in 35 countries. Funds raised by CROP help dig wells to provide water for drinking and agriculture. In some countries, people travel an average of 6 miles a day to obtain clean water. The availability of clean water is especially important because when individuals do not have to walk miles to obtain water, they can use the time to work, build a business, or take advantage of educational opportunities. special admiration of draft horses for their beauty, strength, and size. For photographer John Herr, who recently completed the book “Working Horses of Lancaster County” with Oberholtzer, horses are more of an acquired appreciation. “I found myself in farm fields with any number of horses,” said Herr of his work on the book. “Subjects came up out of curiosity (to give me) a smell or a nuzzle or a gentle nip. I gained a real appreciation for horses and mules.” Oberholtzer and Herr held a multimedia presentation at Fairmount on July 28, explaining how they created the book and sharing experiences of shooting the photos.

Kim Warner, who oversees City Gate’s Ephrata location, clearly remembers a week in the spring before Daylight Saving Time ended. “It was dark, and two people in the same week came to the door (at separate times),” recalled Warner. “They both said, ‘I saw the light on.’” The observance was important to Warner. “That’s what we have prayed: that City Gate can be a light in the darkness of the town,” said Warner. “That’s what I want to hear.” See City Gate pg 7

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will hold its annual apple dumpling sale on Friday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. until sold out. LMS Names New Principal Michael Badriaki joined Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) this summer as the new high school and middle school principal. The 2021-22 school year started on Aug. 24 with the Lancaster campus educating 350 middle and high school students of LMS’ almost 700 prekindergarten through 12thgrade students, hailing from across Lancaster County and the U.S. and around the world. Badriaki, born in Kenya and raised in Uganda, has worked globally for over 20 years in education, holistic missions, global health, consulting, leadership development, business, international relief, and development. Badriaki’s commitment to school started early in his life, as his parents and siblings exemplified the impact of education. His parents provided a safe childhood and the gift of access to education, yet there were times when they financially struggled to send him to school every year. To keep up with his classmates, he would spend days outside the classroom window listening to lessons and evenings completing homework by can-

dlelight until his family could afford for him to return. Badriaki earned a Doctor of Ministry in leadership and global perspectives from George Fox University, a Master of Arts in pastoral and intercultural studies from Multnomah University and Biblical Seminary and a Bachelor of Science from Concordia University. He is pursuing a doctorate in intercultural education from Biola University. Michael is the author of the book “ When Helping Works: Alleviating Fear and Pain in Global Missions.” Badriaki described himself as a student-centric educator who seeks to facilitate learning by elevating the importance of prayer, the Gospel, Scripture, service learning, doing justly in accordance to Micah 6:8, innovative entrepreneurship, assessments, and service learning both locally and globally. To read an interview with Badriaki, visit www.lancaster mennonite.org/about/news/ and look for “Meet Dr. Michael Badriaki, LM’s New High School and Middle School Principal.”

Poontajak pointed out that this year, walkers can designate some of the funds they raise to go to Haiti to help alleviate hunger problems related to the Aug. 14 earthquake that struck that country. But the impact is not only overseas. Local food pantries benefit by receiving 25% of the funds raised by the CROP Hunger Walk nearest them. In ELANCO, the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center in New Holland and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank will both benefit. In the Conestoga Valley area, Conestoga Valley Christian Commu-

involved in women’s ministry and vacation Bible school at her home church, saw a Facebook ad Zimmerman had placed. Warner originally hoped to form a recovery group at the site, but the gathering became a Bible study that welcomed anyone who wanted to attend. “I was there a lot,” said Warner. “(Zimmerman) said, ‘You might as well oversee it because you’re there all the time.’” Now, the Ephrata location offers a variety of activities, including prayer times, a men’s recovery group, worship nights, conversation and coffee gatherings, and a weekly game event on Wednesday afternoons. “We try to be a place where people can come,” said Warner, who added that the organization also provides a place for local churches to serve. “We have had a free lunch every Saturday since January,” noted Warner, who explained that area churches take turns buying the food and serving.

“We are a place where the church can be (Christ’s) hands and feet in the public square,” said Zimmerman. More information about City Gate - Ephrata may be found at https://citygatelancaster.com/ ephrata. Readers who have specific questions may email info@citygatelancaster.com.

the first year of starting the ministry, the building where they were renting was condemned, and Zimmerman said she felt God calling her to take a drive on Duke Street in Lancaster. She came across a new rental property that became the ministry’s next downtown location. “That’s what happens,” said Zimmerman. “God provides buildings and finances every time we move to a new location.” In Ephrata, a landlord heard City Gate was looking for a building to expand its ministry and called Zimmerman. The building at 100 E. Main St., Ephrata, became the ministry’s home in that part of the county in 2016. Warner, who was

City Gate is the mission of Kim Zimmerman and her husband, Brian, who first envisioned a place in Lancaster city in 2006. The pair was training in a prayer ministry, and they felt a call from God to use what they were learning outside the church walls. In 2007, the couple rented a basement room in a former Lancaster hotel. “We started meeting with the homeless community,” said Zimmerman. “Every Friday night, we had three or four hours of just prayer and worship, and we were seeing amazing things happen,” said Zimmerman. “We were connecting with the community.” The Zimmermans focused on prayer and service. BOYS’ SOCCER CV earned a couple of league triumphs last week, topping Warwick and Cedar Crest in their recent pairings, giving them a 33-1 record in LL Section One matchups. On the 28th, the Bucks outlasted the Warriors 1-0 in an overtime win at home. Shots on goal were infrequent during regulation with CV’s keeper Luke Snader grabbing up one save to preserve the shutout. The CV offensive success came nine minutes into overtime when Nate Showvaker, assisted by Caden Wagner, made good on one of just four total shots on goal to net the golden goal. “The Warwick result was a huge moment for our team,” celebrated head coach Dave Hartlaub. He went on to point out that the club, “showed some growth and maturity that we hope to build off of in the coming games.” The Bucks picked up another league victory on September 22nd with a resounding 4-1 win over Cedar Crest. Caden Wagner scored twice, while Landen Sunday and Thabo Lautsbaugh each tallied a CV goal. At Hempfield on the 29th, the Black Knights were able to slip a goal in during the second quarter and hand the Bucks a 1-0 loss. The night before, CV hosted Ephrata and blanked the Mountaineers 3-0. The Buckskin offense was relentless, outshooting Ephrata 18-2 in the attack, but were not able to put the ball in the cage until a second quarter success by Lillian Buckwalter. ran away with a 6-0 triumph on a trip to Cedar Crest. With 30 shots on goal and 14 corners, CV gave the Falcons no chance to regain their footing. Alaina Culbert (2g, 1 a) and Sophia Hess (2 g) led the scoring surge. S. Weaver added both a goal and an assist, Ellie Hershey scored once, Sophia Livingston had three assists, and Xiomara Ruesta added one assist. FOOTBALL Buckskin football took a trip to McCaskey on the 24th of September and returned home as the victors by a margin of 35-7. Both teams visited the endzone in the first quarter, but the remaining three quarters belonged entirely to the Bucks as they pulled away with four more TDs. Nick Tran had a busy day, running in three CV touchdowns, amassing 150 rushing yards of the team total of 222. Quarterback Macoy Kneisley (73 passing yards) found Jaiyell Plowden in the end zone on a 14yard pass for a completion in the second, and Tyler Klopp ran in CV ’s final touchdown in the fourth. Kicker Jaden Walker came through in a five-of-five PAT performance for the Bucks. GOLF Carson Hoover carded CV’s best score with an 89 at the 2021 L-L League Championship which was held on September 27th at Honeybrook Golf Course. The junior’s performance on the 70-par course was enough to place him in a tied 43rd place of nearly 100 participants. Teammate Myles Jackson finished just two strokes behind with a 91 to land in a tie for 49th place. TENNIS A mixed bag of results marked CV ’s last week of the regular schedule, with a 4-3 nonleague loss to Cocalico and a win over Penn Manor by the same score. Last Wednesday Jenna Rychener, Keyshla Baez, and Savanna Burkholder, with singles successes, earned CV’s three points in the loss to Cocalico. On the 27th, CV gained the edge over Penn Manor 4-3 to pick up a win in their last league matchup. Baez, Burkholder, and Nicole Fidler strung together the three singles points needed after Ella Turoczi and Natalie Hoover earned the only CV doubles win. In a 6-1 loss to Ephrata on the 24th, Rychener supplied the Bucks’ lone point winning her singles duel 7-5, 6-2. GIRLS’ SOCCER Last week’s schedule was marked by a tough loss to Warwick and another draw, this time against non-league opponent Red Lion. On the 28th, the squad fell

behind the Warriors by a final count of 2-1. Warwick struck first with a goal after just eight minutes on the field, but CV responded just before halftime with the equalizer from Delainey Varela-Keen, assisted by Leah Buch. Unfortunately for the Bucks, the Warriors slipped in their second goal just three minutes into the second half and held on for

the win. CV keeper Riley Houck grabbed seven saves in the loss. On the 25th, CV reached a 2-2 stalemate against Red Lion, the fourth tie of the season and the sixth contest they have been required to head into overtime. Varela-Keen provided an unassisted goal for the Bucks and Halie Rich netted the other with an assist from Gabriella Neiman.

races, Oberholtzer and Herr gained an appreciation for the relationships between horses and owners and trainers. “They had a clear sense of satisfaction in having an attractive, well-trained horse, and they appreciated it when someone else recognized that,” said Oberholtzer. Herr agreed. “The rapport between the human and equine species is unmistakable,” he said, noting that many of the “horse folks acted with skill and experience acquired from the cradle on.” Oberholtzer and Herr also shared interesting stories of working with horses and their owners. Oberholtzer described a scene where a driver’s wife ran ahead of the horse with a container of baby powder, sending poofs of white into the air to attract the horse for

a photo, and Herr spoke of his opportunity to drive a buggy, saying that he had not realized the amount of physical force that would be necessary to keep the animal in check. “I would have had sore arms if I had driven more than a half mile,” he reported. Oberholtzer’s experiences included sitting on a hay bale in a dairy barn with her laptop reviewing photos with a young man sitting on an overturned bucket while his brothers worked to milk the cows around them. Herr and Oberholtzer collaborated together previously on “Plain Meetinghouses: Lancaster County Old Order Mennonites Gather to Worship,” and they completed “Mares & Foals of Lancaster County” at the same time they created “Working Horses.”

The City of Lancaster recently announced that it received a $15,000 Healing the Planet grant from the GIANT Company and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. This grant seeks to help build environmental stewardship by connecting families with community green spaces. The funds will be used for materials and labor to build compost boxes and for purchasing composting tools, as well as for supporting education and outreach activities. The city will use this grant to work with Lancaster Compost Co-Ops to expand its community composting program to four additional park sites: Sixth Ward Park, Reservoir Park, South End Park and Buchanan Park. The co-op already has similar sites at the Lancaster City Recycling Dropoff Center and Musser Park,

with a new community bin recently launched behind Culliton Park at the intersection of Conestoga, Union, and Filbert streets. Compost co-op membership is free, with members expected to participate in an orientation session and contribute approximately one hour of work per month for bin maintenance activities. Community composting sites offer opportunities for engaging citizens in environmentally-related conversations and stewardship, and they are intended to bring people together with a shared sense of purpose and neighborhood involvement, in addition to providing opportunities for art and education. For more information, visit the Lancaster Compost Co-Ops website, w w w . l a n c a s t e r compost.us.

Plans Auction Event

Hinkletown Mennonite School students (front, from left) Kinsley Nolt, Isaiah Knowles, (back) Weston Martin and Ashlyn Martin display items that will be up for bids at the school’s auction.

The 41st annual HinkleFEST and Benefit Auction will take place on Friday, Oct. 8, and Saturday, Oct. 9, at Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS), 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata. Rain or shine, the auction will be held outside under the tent, and all children’s activities will be outdoors as well. On Friday, the seventh annual Chicken Chase/Family Fun Run will take place at 4 p.m. Children will run one, two or three laps, based on age, while adults will do four laps, which equals over a mile and a half. Awards will go to the top runners, along with participation prizes for all runners. Participants can preregister at www.hinkletown school.org or register on race day. Pork barbecue dinners will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. with drive-through and eatin options available. Meals consist of roast pork sandwiches, picnic side dishes, drinks and whoopie pies. While at the school, visitors can preview the items that will go on the auction block on Saturday. Kids will have access to balloon animals and cotton candy. Saturday’s Kids FEST, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will include a bounce house, barrel train rides, pony rides, carnival games and a petting zoo. All-day passes will give kids unlimited access to all of the activities, including face painting and craft activities. The seventh grade cupcake club will offer children the opportunity to decorate and eat

their own cupcake as part of the festivities. The auction will kick off on Saturday at 9 a.m., although coffee and baked goods will be available beginning at 8 a.m. Throughout the day, the sale will include handmade, local food products such as meats and dairy products; a ride on Garden Spot Fire & Rescue’s new engine; a weekend vacation house rental at Angola by the Bay; passes to DelGrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash, the Fort Pitt Museum or the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium; certificates for outdoor experiences, such as a climbing/rappelling adventure; passes for the Lake Tobias Safari Tour; local dinner options, including a Jamaican meal; family experiences such as a onehour balloon flight or a weekend campsite at Woodcrest Retreat; and items for family fun at home, such as a grill, lawn furniture and lawn games. The auctioneers will be Michael J. Martin and John Rutt of Martin & Rutt Auctioneers. HMS students will contribute to the auction through class projects and baskets, such as a class quilt, canned goods from the HMS garden and homemade ice cream from the middle school ice cream club. The HinkleFEST & Benefit Auction is the school’s largest community-building event supporting the mission of Christ-centered education at HMS. For more information, visit the aforementioned website or call the school at 717-354-7100.
